We've been doing seasonal rentals for years now for my son, and my wife just did for this season as her gear was getting old. Skip and the staff are supportive and professional. Renting and returning gear is easy and pain free. We really enjoy going there, and tapping the trail sign for snow, and all the picks of Tuckerman's and famous Olympians like Billy Kidd. I have been meaning to write a review but today really reminded me to do so. Why? Because the customer service is OVER THE TOP. When I walked in today, I was quickly greeted and helped - I was picking up two snowboards that came in for a tuning which btw, they expedited because my son is going to Hunter tomorrow. While I was waiting, not 2, not 3, not 4, but FIVE associates asked me if I was being helped! We used to go to 44 Boards in White Plains as it is much closer to me. It's always chaotic in there and even if you make an appointment, you are still left waiting. Been going to Hickory & Tweed for four years now- hands down it's absolutely the best. Skip treats you like family. My three kids are so comfortable to go each year as the staff are all so patient and kind. I have leased excellent skiis, boots, and snowboards for my kids each year. I bought an awesome pair of boots for myself a few years ago that Skip recommended that literally have been a game changer for me. Have also bought socks, poles, etc- they have great quality brands and the fairest prices around. My kids also have a lot of fun with all the cool things here like the model gondolas, dressed up bear, chair made of skiis, bench made of snowboards, podium, old fashioned lift outside, and all of the ski decor like the giant ski going up the stairs. Great experience here about a month or so ago when Armonk had its winter festival. I needed to buy a new hat for my son and one for my baby, too. Not only was I in-and-out in 15 minutes, the staff was so helpful, and even helped me lug my stroller up the stairs and back down. Sure, the prices are steep, but the quality and brands carried are higher end. I went with a Patagonia hat for my 4 year old, and then some other brand of adorable ski hat for my 9 month old. I also got my son a pair of North Face gloves. I think I spent around $100, but I'd go back again based on my experience and honestly think I may now prefer it to other local outdoor outfitters. read more

Needed new ski gear this season and have known of Hickory & Tweed as one of the top ski shops in the US since the 1960s. Finally drove up there from NYC during a trip last October. Really appreciate the time that Kevin Vaught spent with me to connect me with the right ski, boot and binding. I'm a fit 67 year old who started skiing at 3 years old and ski 30-40 days a year at Jackson Hole, Taos, Crested Butte and Copper Mountain. While western skiers like to think we ski deep soft snow all the time, the reality is the best ski is an all mountain ski that works well on hard snow as well as soft. And you need a ski shop that has the experience to assess the customers true ability and fit you with the right gear. Kevin and shop owner Skip Beitzel have the experience and knowledge to do that and I couldn't be happier with the results. My new Blizzard Bonafide 97 have been super stable, fast and the perfect all mountain skis here at Taos this week. When Kevin realized that they didn't have the right boot in stock for my size, he put off an immediate sale and special ordered a new Lange RX 130LV for me from the factory. Perfect all day fit. Coupled with Look Pivot 15 bindings, Ive got a kit that skis better than any setup I've had in 64 years of skiing. Earlier this season, I came in for a snowboard tune, prior to leaving for a trip to Colorado. I often tune my own equipment, but I had a bit of a scrape in my base, and it wouldn't easily hold wax, but wasn't deep enough for PTEX. For context, I could not have come at a worse time. It was mid-morning on a Saturday, right before there was predicted snow. Despite the shop absolutely being slammed with customers when I was there, and the fact that it is certainly (a little) more oriented towards skiers, I was happily surprised to not only be treated like a long time customer, but also have an experience that out performed every "board shop" that I've been to in my 30 plus years of snowboarding. Within literal seconds of walking through the door, I was politely pointed in the right direction, and an extremely professional younger gentleman was evaluating my board. He was very knowledgeable about my specific snowboard, as well as being able to gauge my level knowledge, and tailor his communication perfectly. A mild base grind was suggested, which was definitely the correct solution. Then I was asked where I was traveling, and we discussed cold temperature wax. At no point was I upsold in any way. The price was beyond reasonable, especially for being at such a beautiful, busy and high-end store. They stuck right to the price chart on their site, and may have even gone a little under on the base grind- regardless, it was about half of what I was expecting in Armonk. You can tell that they take immense pride in their customer care, and that is something that I place above everything else in ANY business. I cannot possibly recommend them enough, especially for tuning needs. I would imagine the service is potentially even better for skiers, if better is possible in this case! Seeing as I am bothering to write a review, I would like to address some of the (very few) negative reviews that I have seen, as I think they are largely from people who don't understand the business of winter sports. At least insofar as calling the shop "overpriced." They are not a gigantic, corporate only discount store, but I personally saw plenty of items that were marked down to extremely competitive prices. While I am personally not currently the most likely to buy my next snowboard there, that is based solely upon the understandably small, mid-season stock, that was present the two times I popped in. I would love to send my business their way in the future. I am simply at a point, where I hunt down highly specific boards, and no reasonable person can expect a local business to carry every board, just to please gear nerds like myself. The selection of snowboards that they did have, were all excellent choices for the almost all riders, and all from quality manufacturers, at perfectly reasonable prices. To my recollection, I saw nearly every commonly purchased Burton model, a nice selection from Jones, as well as a few other brands, that allude me at the moment. So, could you get some of this gear for less online? Obviously, but they are absolutely not trying to trick you. The price differences are minimal, at worst. If you can afford to pay JUST slightly more, to support this wonderful local business, I would posit that this will yield a drastically more positive and personalized experience, particularly for someone who might need some help selecting the right equipment for their evolving needs, and/or skill level. Lastly, I would definitely suggest looking into their seasonal rental program from everything I saw, heard from others, and have read online. What really makes me confident in my recommendation, is that they are not going to take advantage of your potential lack of experience or knowledge. It is categorically NOT their business model. This is a place that rightfully earns return business, by making customers feel welcome and valued. Winter sports can be daunting to dip your toes into, and the financial barriers to entry are not insubstantial, across the board. However, I would recommend simply walking into Hickory & Tweed, and I'd bet you'll be significantly more comfortable and intrigued, than you might imagine. 100% recommended! Thanks to the staff for an incredible experience. I can't wait to be back in the fall. They made the diagnosis quickly, accurately, and fixed the problem same day. I'm a physician, and these guys do the same thing we do - except that their patients are bicycles. Helpful staff, expansive selection, chill vibes. It's a ski shop - what more is there to say?

Hickory and Tweed is a terrible shop. If you read these reviews, you'll notice a thread of folks "who've come here for years" - because they live nearby and it's the only ski place within some distance. Sort of like a popular local coffee shop ... that would go out of business the second a serious competitor shows up - that is how H&T has made it in Armonk all these years. Let's break it down - the rental inventory here is terrible. The service here is hit and miss - you might get someone who knows something, and you might get a kid who knows nothing. Perhaps most importantly - let's talk about how they tune your skis. H&T does not follow established guidelines and has no provable record of how or why a ski was tuned for anything that leaves the shop. Why does this matter? Because they set your bindings, and they are supposed to know what to do. If your bindings are too tight, the skis won't release and you can get injured. Until you've had an accident, you don't know how important this is. What do I recommend? Run, don't walk, away from Hickory and Tweed. Take the extra drive and go to Darien Sport Shop. Darien has a professional operation and torque test everything that leaves the shop. Darien knows if a binding is set correctly, including if the DIN doesn't track to the force they expect. Most impressively, Darien has barcode tracking on all their gear, so they know which piece of equipment was calibrated and to what standard - stored digitally. They also have a program to rent brand new inventory, whereas Hickory and Tweed is mostly older gear. Once you see how Darien Sport Shop manages skis, you'll realize what an amateur operation Hickory & Tweed is. read more

Pick up process was a breeze - tent set up outside where you hand in your tickets and they bring you all the equipment you reserved. The greatest ski and cycle shop in NY state, bar none. So I'm a tad bit biased given I have lived in Armonk for the past 8 years but for those of you not familiar with H&T I highly encourage you to visit and meet the team if you're looking for skis, ski rentals for the season or bikes for you or your kids. Skip, Brian, Mac are basically a family that we go to every year for our winter and summer sports equipment. Whenever we have had an issue they are always there to accomodate. Most recently we needed to trade in my 7 year old's boots as they no longer fit her and upgraded my sons skis. Everyone is super friendly and helpful, and their prices are by far the most reasonable. What an amazing store! I went in with very little knowledge of what I needed for my son to learn how to ski. Skip, the shop owner, was amazing in every way possible. I was able to pick out skis, boots, poles, gloves, and everything else my son needed. We also picked out a great warm winter jacket. This shop and the owners really go above and beyond to help make sure that you have what you need- quality products- and explain everything throughly. I still prefer going into stores that give personalized help, which is rare nowadays and it's exactly what we got here. I love this store and the experience we had. This has been my "go to" place for 15 years. Always excellent help and knowledgeable staff. Today, Matt, a snowboarder, really took the time to help me decide whether to take my board out west for my first time riding out there. He helped me decide if I need a new board for next year - one with magne-traction or not, and he analyzed my stance and settings. He also brought out some boots and step-in bindings for me to see and try. Then he waxed my board and tightened all the screws! I just returned home from a visit to Hickory & Tweed with my daughter and my very young grandchildren. They were fitted for skis and boots for the first time. They are now the third generation of family to be H&T customers. As usual, Skip was there to say hi. As usual, the staff was amazing at dealing with little children and getting sizes and adjustments just right with no fuss. As usual, the equipment was high quality and in great condition - ready to go. It was a great experience. All we need now is some snow. We're ready for when it gets here. Fair and honest. This is a nice shop with knowledgeable staff and reasonable prices. We go there every year to rent skis for our little guy and the service has always been excellent. I was particularly impressed with the way they handled one of our purchases last year, a new pair of boots that just wasn't cutting it for me. The fit seemed fine when I first picked them up but gradually, as they were used more and more throughout the season, it became increasingly apparent that there was a real problem with fit - probably just due to my own anatomy. At any rate, long story short: Skip (the owner) and Mike (long time employee) did everything in their power and then some in order to make things right. Both get an A+ from me. The customer service for ski rental is amazing. They helped outfit the entire family in a friendly and patient manner (not any easy thing when the kids start to act out). The boots I originally got were a little tough to get into, and they let me swap them out for another pair at no charge. I also had great customer service trying to get a pair of snow pants. This review is specifically as to their bike repair shop and the employees there. While I have only written 9 reviews on Yelp, I have written many on other sites. I always say, when and if I am forced to give a poor review, that I want to give 5 stars when deserved. I want to have a good experience. I want my money to be well spent. Well, it just doesn't get any better than this. I first brought in a bicycle wheel that had the wrong tube installed. All 3 mechanics were busy working. One looked at it, took it apart and replaced the tube in less than five minutes. He then placed cleats on a new pair of shoes I purchased. I then asked him about a problem I was having with brakes on my Cannondale. He said to bring it in. I did so the next day. He called the manufacturer of the brakes and got them to warranty the problem. That was going to take a while and I needed the bike for a specific ride. He went out of his way to replace the brakes for me as a stopgap measure and had the bike ready in time for my ride. All at a great price. I'd truly give 10 stars if I could. And I have zero connection to this store other than as now a very satisfied and lifelong customer. Truly as good at it gets. read more

The owner skip is outgoing and present while his army of professionals are simply happy to help, the bike shop is proficient and professional, the ski shop always has the best skis and affordable rentals, the staff frequently goes to events and training seminars. Biking - I had my Cannondale for maintenance at Hickory & Tweed. I was very disappointed. First they can't even make the easiest maintenance on their own and had to sent my Lefty fork to Cannondale and when I picked it up the mechanic was not able to inform me about the service and told the trainee to hand it over (friendly but perhaps not yet as competent as needed in this situation). At home I saw that the bar was not in the correct position and he didn't do anything more than really needed. I asked him to review something else what he as well didn't do. Never again. read more

They carry primarily Cannondale and Specialized and have a reasonable selection of Specialized shoes, soft goods, and accessories. I have used them to get spares for my Specialized crit bike, but I prefer other for service work on my bikes. read more

Was rolling through town on an 80 mile ride. Stopped for lunch up the street and noticed my rear tire was showing signs of wear. I still had 40 more to go and while It might have survived the trip, why risk it? So I stopped in at a moment's notice to see if I could buy a new tire. He changed my tire, lubed my chain and fine tuned my gears (which had been working fine and are now working better;less trimming makes me a happy girl). I have been outfitting my family at Hickory & Tweed in Armonk for five years. Every Autumn, we rent ski boots for my older daughters and skis and boots for my four-year-old. The sales people are incredibly patient and I always feel like they treat us as if our business means everything to them. I send everyone there and warn them against other ski shops in our area that have repeatedly proven to me they are out for your cash only. The Hickory & Tweed folks took back my daughter's rental boots last year and refunded my money (no questions asked) when I decided to get that daughter's boots from another shop where her racing coach works. Do not take your bike here for service. I took my bike in for service because it was having trouble shifting from the small ring to the big ring. They called me a few days later to give me an update. The phone call started with them telling me that I needed new tires (which is true, but not why I brought the bike in). Yes, I know, but what about the shifting issue? "You need a new chain and cassette" (which would run about $450). No I don't, I replied, you guys replaced that just last year. When I asked what was wrong with the shifting from small ring to big ring the response was "I haven't looked at that yet". I called the next day to say that I didn't want them to replace anything and that I would pick the bike up (so I could take it somewhere else for a second opinion). When I picked the bike up they told me that I owed them $80 for the tune-up. What tune-up? I didn't want or ask for a tune-up. When I said I didn't ask for that they responded by saying the bike needed to be tightened up, (which resolved the shifting issue) cleaned and that's what I owed them. I took my bike to another bike shop and they told me several things: 1) the bike had not been cleaned (I guess that's not part of the $80 tune-up), 2) I did not need a new chain or cassette (in fact, the chain still had about 75% of its life left) but that the chain just needed a link taken out. One last note - while I was waiting to pick my bike up, I heard one of their mechanics telling another customer that he needed a new cassette and chain. I stood there thinking that's some business model they have. I'm sure many customers can afford to pay for a new chain and cassette, but what they don't know is they probably don't need them! Go somewhere else and save yourself hundreds of dollars. read more

Jack did a great job with the boot fitting - he is extremely patient and spent an hour or even more making sure I had the perfect boots. Skip the owner introduced himself and gave me some pointers.
