Shawnee Mountain is a solid choice for a family ski day in the Poconos, especially if you're not chasing black diamond thrills or massive vertical drops. Took the fam here on MLK day weekend and we had a really enjoyable time overall. Super family-friendly vibe! The staff at the rental shop and ski school were patient and helpful. My 8-year-old's group lesson was excellent; the instructor had her linking turns by the end of the day. They were also very nice and gave her a great report card of how she did during her lesson. We also went to one of the snowtubing sessions. It was the first time for my kids and everyone had a great time. Be sure to try linking snowtubes with a bunch of people. It makes you go down twice as fast and much more exciting! It was a bit crowded though so be prepared to wait in line and avoid bumping into others on the ski trail. Would definitely come back for another family outing or to progress the kids' skiing. It's not Vail, but it's reliable, approachable, and feels like a classic local hill done right. Recommended for beginners, families, or anyone wanting a low-key ski day without the big crowds and prices of the larger mountains. read more

There was parent that allowed his daughter to ski in snowplow without control of speed or turns on a green slope from the top of the mountain She almost hit me, but I just moved in time. The parent was violent and refused to take responsible for his daughter skiing around other skiers. He would not listen to you, skied on top my skiis and would say something and run away. Just to note, I don't personally ski or snowboard. We visited Shawnee as we heard that this was a good beginners mountain. We took our kids here so that they could experience their first mountain trip. Our oldest daughter went for her first lesson on skiing. We signed some paperwork, got her rentals, and geared up. The lesson was 2 hours long and they taught her how some of the basics. She actually enjoyed it and did pretty well too. The staff seemed really nice and also presented her with a progress report. As for the youngest daughter, we just had her play some with some snow in the play area dedicated for smaller children. For $10, the space was tiny and the snow was more like ice. This was not a great experience, and there weren't much for her to do in there. There weren't much toys and we were bored midway through our 1 hour time slot. Tubing was pretty fun but the wait was pretty long. Overall, I think everyone had a good time considering it was their first time. read more

I'm updating my review and adding a star because of our two subsequent snowboarding trips last season (we went three times last snowboarding season). The check-in area was very organized, making it easy to file into the correct lines for checking in and getting rentals (for our friends; we have our own equipment). The lines went pretty quickly and smoothly too, which was great! Parking is always relatively easy when you go early but when you come later in the day, you have to walk pretty far which can be a pain if you bring your own equipment. I love the trails here! Kittatinny is so fun. Even if it's a green circle trail (beginner friendly/easiest of the trails), it's so fun and there are plenty of fun small jumps to hit! It's also pretty wide so even if there are people around you going at a faster pace, it's a good trail to learn on. The terrain park is cool too. I rode my first box here last season! MY BEST ADVICE IS: - Go on a weekday or go as early as you can to avoid the crowds and get good parking. - Bring your own food and leave it in your car. When you're ready to eat, go back to the car and have your lunch break there. Food at ski resorts are always going to be subpar and overpriced. - Order your ski lift ticket/rentals online ahead of time to avoid lines! read more

This place has potential for being 4 stars, but I'm doing a 3 stars for today. Like, if I came back on a week day with less crowds then maybe I could see 4 stars. There's not a lot of great organization/order with the crowds. A lot of mixed feelings from the employees. There were some that were super friendly and seeking to help you - and then there were some that were annoyed that you are there and seemed like they didn't know what was going on. When we went to the rental stand we said "we need to rent all equipment and lift tickets." The person who checked us out did not include helmets in the rental price. We did not know this was a separate cost, so we had to get back on line later when we realized we could not pick up the helmets. Be careful if you rent a locker. It seems that once you lock your stuff in the locker you can only retrieve once (meaning you can't go back and forth more than once). We ended up needing to to pay twice to lock our locker again. It was weird - would be helpful if they had someone there to help guide you about the lockers (or a sign with a warning). The slopes themselves were pretty good. Had an enjoyable time going down them. I really enjoyed the snack cabin at the top of the mountain. Good vibes in there and a good place to rest/use the restroom. They only have snacks - not full meals like the tavern at the bottom of the mountain. I would come back here considering it's not a long drive from where I live. read more

Shawnee mountain was great for most of our day! I will say I dont think there is enough of a range of slopes for beginners, as the step up from the bunny slope is a very steep mountain. Around 5:30 on one of my last runs i dislocated my knee. Thankfully, there were many people around and I got help within 5 minutes. My knee had popped back into place however, the ski staff downplayed the extent of my injury and i had no idea what i was in for. They told me i would be in pain and if i 'am still in pain, go to the doctor, as if damage was a rare occurrence. I was in severe pain and was later diagnosed with MCL and LCL partial tears. I ended up being out of work for 2 months while I recovered in PT. I wish they had set me up to expect the worst-case scenario so I wasn't blindsided. read more

I skied there today and it was wonderful. The snow was great and the highspeed lifts are really nice. They've got padding on the chairs :-) I'm an advanced skier and I was very happy with the challenge level. I'd say, at least today, I didn't see much in the way of bump skiing, which is fine by me. I took a private lesson with a younger female and it was a blast. I learned a few things and had a lot of fun in the process. The lodge is nice and the food is good. This ski mountain is about 1.5 hours drive away from NYC and it is very convenient for a day ski trip. The operation hours are awesome- 9:00 am to 9:00 pm on weekdays and there will be a discount for people entering after 3:00 pm. They have two bunny hills: one for beginners to practice on their own and the other bunny hill for people who take the group lessons. The magic carpet brings people up to mid-hill while the lift brings people up to the top of the bunny hill. Bunny hill usually gets very crowded between 10:30-4:00 on weekends. I like the fact that the hosts allow people with a paid admission and equipment enter the skiing area, but people do not need to have the equipment with them to use the carpet. This is great for parents to teach the little kids how to skiing/snowboarding. You will see lots of parents running / chasing the kids while the kids are learning how to skiing/snowboarding there at the bunny hill. The other side of the mountain has lifts that go all the way up to mountain for trails with different difficulty levels. There are lots of trails and my sons never get tired of trying out different trails up there. The lift ticket and rental are priced reasonably, but I would recommend the miser tickets. This ski area also offers snow tubing, but the ticket sold out very quickly on weekends. read more

Only 6 lanes open, and there are likely 200+ customers, so the wait is long due to over booking, hour and half session only allows me to snow tubing 4 times! Not worth the money and my time. DO NOT RECOMMEND SNOW TUBING. We paid $46 each for 1.5 hours of snow tubing, which is expensive. For over half of the time we were there, 3 of the 6 tubing lanes were closed. Since this was a sold-out time slot, this led to very long lines, as shown in the picture. We ended up only going down twice within the first hour. After 50 minutes, they opened up two more lanes for a total of 5 out of 6 lanes open. We went down a total of 5 times which is very little considering the price. On top of that, we had to walk down a quarter of the hill to begin, so we couldn't even snow tube down the entire length of the lane. read more

I went skiing at Shawnee this weekend and it was crowded. Apparently they sold out tickets for Saturday early in the morning. Just another reason I buy my tickets online. For an adult skier the lift ticket will cost you $80 on the weekends and $58 during the week. Night tickets (3pm-9pm) Thursday and Friday night, it only costs $40. Shawnee has 23 slopes and trails, 6 for beginners, 11 for intermediates and 6 for "experts". Expert trails is a relative term. The longest trail is 5,100 feet which is decent. If you are looking for speed the vertical drop is 700'. Snow is always an issue in this area. Often it is machine made with and 1'-3" natural snow. If you like powder wait for a blizzard. Covid-19 precaution are required like masks, social distancing and buying online. The staff get temperature checks. With sold out crowds, enforcement in the restaurant, on the ski lift lines and other venues is impossible. The bottom line is that it is skiing and if you want to ski close to home, this is it. The expression "It is what it is" applies 100%. read more

Our family was there last Monday (Martin Luther King), and we were disappointed with the service. I do not recommend this place because of the setup and the service, not kids friendly. My daughter and sister fell, and the guy just looked at them until my sister called for help--the safety concerns in here below average. The guard on the top was just staring at us without giving us any help to push the snow tube down. You paid $32.00 for self-service and taking care of your safety--the guys downstairs much better in the safety concerns. I hope that They can Have better Training for Their employees For future visitor's sake. The restrooms around 10 at the front line and only two were clean. read more

A great resort for beginner and intermediate skiers. This has a number of short trails that are great for skiing and family friendly. On a busy day, the lines get long and the hill is crowded. I would not reccomend going on a Friday night, since many schools come here for their ski clubs. The hills do get crowded on the busier days, and there are many beginner skiers and snowboarders. It can sometimes be tricky and slow due to the number of new people. However, on any other day this resort is decent and not too busy. For the more advanced skier or snowboarder, going up and down may be quite fast and numerous. The slopes are not very challenging or long and the bunny hill is very nice. The food is a little brloe average compared to otjer resorts in tjenarea, but it can suffice for a quick meal. Overall a decent slopes for beginners and people ho want practice. Not recommended for the more advanced, due to the number and level of people who typically go here as well as the difficulty of each trail. Decent terrain park! read more

We finally landed on this location for snow tubing after checking out reviews for a bunch of other ones in the Poconos, because it was the cheapest (1.5 hours vs 2 hours like most) and closest (37 min from Tobyhanna). The process goes like this: 1. park (free!) 2. walk across the bridge where there are very clear signs to veer right for snow tubing. 3. show the barcode you received via email to the ticket counter where they'll print out passes similar to lift tickets that are attached to your jacket. 4. follow the sign for snow tubing and wait in your group until an employee makes an announcement about the rules. We were able to complete a total of 8 trips with a family of 5 (kids under 11). The ride wasn't super fast which is the speed most of our family prefers. Customer service: EXCELLENT! Everyone from the ticket counter to the guys on the bottom and top of the hill we're helpful and friendly. I want to point out that the guys managing the riders and grabbing the tubes at the bottom were hustling big time. So...why did I knock off a star? I'd say it's more like half a star knocked off because the melting snow caused us to drag out tubes a quarter of the way for each ride (a few times it stopped a third way down and we had to build momentum again). Temp was in the high 40s/50, so I would highly recommend going when it's colder. Tickets didn't seem like they would be sold out so you can purchase them last minute. Overall, we enjoyed the small ski resort feel! read more

I went snowtubing here. The people working there were very nice pushed you down the hill good. They had an escalator to bring you up and it was very fun. It wasn't too expensive, Becuase me and my family of 5 were able to go. For snowtubing, there were no requirements stated by you just have to wear a coat and some sort of pants or snow pants. read more

Visited this mountain with friends over 15 years and spend thousands dollars on lift tickets and food. Last year bought maximiser tickets and got 3 as a gift. Unfortunately season was closed early last winter / spring and after phone call with my concern losing those tickets client support told me that another 1 or 2 weeks slopes will be open. Hubby and I went snow tubing. Went to the 3:00 session. It started off fun but as you get to the bottom there are Mats that help you slow down and stop, so our third time sliding down, the mats did not allow us to stop therefore we both crashed into the Padded wall very hard. It actually felt like I got a slight concussion, that's how hard I hit the wall, I knew that was it for me and we had Plenty of time left on the clock. I think the bottom of the slide needs to be longer or they need to pad the wall more. Hubby flipped over when reached the bottom because of the mat, he was ok tho, it was actually funny but thank God he is in shape cause it could've been bad. We did witness a lady tumble at the beginning of the slide. She was pretty hurt because they had to call for help! I hope she is Ok. Would Not recommend this snow tubing especially to someone older. read more

This was the first time I took my kids snow boarding. They had a great time and want to go again. Will they be going any soon? That is a hard NO! The reason being that the price for 2 kids + 2 helmets + 2 equipment rentals = grand total of $190!!! $95 per kid to snow board for a few hour is pricey!!! read more

We took the kids to Shawnee a few weeks ago for their first time skiing. We purchased the beginner package, ski rentals (skis & boots), 1 hour group lesson and all day lift ticket for $98 each. Helmets were $15/each for the day. We dropped the kids off at their lesson and watched them from afar as we weren't skiing and no one is allowed in the ski area without equipment and a lift ticket. Makes sense since it's hazardous to have people standing around, especially around beginners who may not be able to stop or slow down. The kids enjoyed their lesson and learned enough in one lesson to make good use of the bunny slope (trail called Little Chief) for half the day. There's a carpet called SkiWee that beginners stand on to bring them to the top of Little Chief. The trail was a little challenging for a first timer but not too intimidating that they didn't want to go. The kids really enjoyed their first time and want to go back. Shawnee was perfect for us because it was a relatively quick drive from Long Island (about 1.5 hours), wasn't crowded and was perfect for beginners. The lodge was comfortable and we found a table to sit at both inside and outside. read more

This place is absolutely incredible. We are Camelback season pass holders but are deeply concerned about the direction of their ski school. I have an Indy Pass so I decided I had nothing to lose and check out Shawnees ski school. For the same price as 1.5 hours at Camelback you get 3 hours at Shawnee and the level of teaching is far higher. This ski area is clearly dedicated to growing the sport of skiing and the local community. The terrain is generally very mild so it's fantastic for getting your whole family into the sport. read more

WOW, the staff are top of the line, I have been to many different ski and snow tubing places and the staff by far are the best I have ever seen. From the guest services quickly getting our tickets to the security welcoming us with open arms to the lift controller and team managing the snow tubing you can clearly see that they aren't a bunch of nobodies they offered to run races for our family side by side offered to help us in tube. In some case spin us to make things even more fun. Every time we came down the mountain they asked are you good do you need any help etc I am truly impressed by every single one of them. Our trip on 12/26 12:30-2:00 snow tubing slot should all get a free hot chocolate! The ski bunny slope were super fun for the kids and snow tubing was top of the line they had 6 lanes limiting the people each slot to make the lines not long at all. read more

Me and my partner went here on a Wednesday in December 2020 (so peak covid). The ski area is well organized, the facilities are clean, and the ticketing & rental area was efficient & friendly. It was my partners first time skiing and we got him the beginner package which cost $80-90 - it included a ticket limited to the bunny hill (which has both a magic carpet & a lift), a 1 hour lesson (which was with other mostly adult beginners) and equipment rental. This is the best deal we could find in the area. He said the instructor was helpful and friendly, and when he was done with his lesson he could sort of stop and was considering turning - lol. We're going to have to go back a few times to get him all the way skiing, but it was a good start. I'm a more advanced skier and the trails that were open are pretty basic/ short runs - this is definitely a mountain best suited for young people & beginners/ folks who want to ski locally but are not looking for anything fancy, but for that it's perfect - it was exactly what we were looking for on this particular trip. Not every trail was open when I was there, but there were enough to make a fun day of it. I need to add a note about the COVID compliance of the other patrons, because I was looking for this info online before we went and couldn't find it - we are disappointed and found it was too high of a covid risk for us and we are not sure we'll be able to return this season like we had originally planned. Not the fault of the buisness IMO, though there is probably something they can do about at least #1 and #2 on the below list, it is primarily the fault of people who choose not to follow important public safety rules. The specific issues we had were: 1.) In the rental area, where you try on boots, people were not wearing masks and it was an indoor, unventilated space. There was no one enforcing mask wearing in this location. 2.) Same with the lodges - there were employees enforcing the "no eating indoors" rule which was good, but people not eating were taking off their masks and it didn't seem possible to make sure they didn't. Maybe the only way would be to not allow anyone to linger in the lodges, which didn't seem to be a rule at the time I visited. 3.) Additionally, on the high speed lift, there was an employee making sure people wore a mask right before boarding the lift, but people in line were taking theirs down - this is outdoors so less overtly concerning, but still not ideal. 4.) Finally, the same thing was happening in line of the bunny hill lift, and there was no enforcement. I understand that it's very difficult to get people to comply with the mask wearing mandate (and also that the two instances I mentioned that are outdoors were low risk) but some of what I saw didn't sit well unfortunately. read more

I want to COMMEND your entire staff on the hill EVERY SINGLE one of them could not have been nicer or more attentive I am 60 years old and have not tubed in more years then I care to admit - yet the kindness shown by your young men was incredible - I'd apologize for my slowness and 1 replied - it is fine - we're just so glad your here (imagine that - it made my heart happy) ... So, I've got some family friends that have/had a place in the are and I've been skiing and snowboarding here a bunch. It's a cool smaller mountain with frequented trails and a couple lackluster lodges. I like this mountain for what it is for sure but they also offer some fun events in the off season. I knew someone once who owned a hot air balloon and was lucky enough to take part in an event or two at Shawnee, I learned a lot and could go on for a while but it wouldn't pertain to Shawnee per say. But the pix I got were great so I'll post a few. Lift tickets are never cheap but they do have student discounts and various season specials. read more

We went snowboarding with kids; it was OK. But I marveled at the spectacle of the lodge cafeteria. I understand "captive audience" and expect to pay more in this sort of situation, but this was honestly the worst value in food I've ever experienced in my life, worse than any amusement park or ball park. Lunch for 1 adult and 3 kids (one being a toddler): two of those small cardboard trays (maybe 2.5 by 5 inches) containing some fries and a couple of chicken strips, a cheeseburger with a sleeve of fries, 5 drinks (three fountain drinks, a small milk, and a water), and one small container of cheese cubes & crackers (would fit into an adult hand): $66. We paid $66 for a quantity of food that would have very easily fit into a brown lunch bag. Does this mean the owners are bad people who probably cut corners and have poor ethics otherwise? Of course I don't know, but I sure can take a guess! I also question the business sense of it: The food was really, really bad. These other places--amusement parks and sports stadiums--have stepped up their game in recent years. You pay a lot, but you receive decent quality food in exchange. Shawnee apparently didn't get the memo. Granted, maybe the bill was supposed to be $65 or $64 instead: the cashier charged me for a "large milk" that was clearly designed for a toddler or small child (less than a cup of milk). I debated going to the mats about it with her-- and she definitely struck me as a person who would have enjoyed that, waking up in the morning looking forward to disappointing and diminishing people--but for a difference of a dollar or two, I figured I wouldn't give the satisfaction, but rather just leave an honest review and call it a day. read more

Shawnee Ski resort is ok at best. Many of their trails were closed when I visited. My wife is a slower skiier and they rushed us on to the ski lifts. They barked at us for going in the lesson line even though there wasn't anyone else behind or in front of us. The slopes themselves were largely unmarked with many closed lifts to the slopes that were open. The lodge at the bottom is gross and serves unhealthy foods that I wouldn't expect even Burger King to pass as food. Nasty greasy fries and chicken fries are just about all they serve. Bring peanut butter and jelly folks, save yourself some drama. If you do come the weekdays are less crowded and you can get your equipment quickly. read more

Went to Shawnee Mountain snow tubing park over the last weekend and we had a great time! Coming in from Central NJ, the mountain is a mere 45 minutes drive from our house. The weather was amazing and the conditions were perfect for snow tubing. The attendants were all so great, managing the lanes and take-offs to ensure 100% safety. All 7 lanes were open which was great, and the lines were a quick 2 minute wait, if that! After our session, we ate and relaxed indoor next to the huge colonial fireplace while watching the skiers and snowboarders come down the mountain. There was lots of snow and excitement for the whole crew. Service was exceptional and friendly. My family can not wait to come back next year! read more

Great resort for the beginners. The main benefit I have with this resort it is very close to home. So I can go skiing at any time. The mountain isn't really high, but for the beginners like me it doesn't really matter. Everything is organized well and ability of the resort to process over 6000 visitors per day is a testament to that (I asked) . They have an excellent program for the kids to learn to ski and my son is still going to their development program now for the 3rd year. Overall I think they have good grasp on everything just wish food and drink was a littl cheaper but I guess I can't complain about that since you pay for convinience... read more

Disclosure: I went here during COVID-19. Do not go here - much more worth it to go to any nearby mountains (Camelback, Blue, etc.) Staff did not enforce mask mandates, no one was checking lift tickets, and all employees we encountered were rude. Even though it was "sold out" for the day, I do not believe they were operating at limited capacity, and nothing was COVID safe as advertised - tight lines, people not wearing masks the right way (including staff!), and more people there than I have ever seen before COVID. Brought my son here twice for lessons (both group and private). In summary, the place is fine I guess, but not nearly as good as the places I used to take him in Ontario, Canada. Pros: -prices for lessons seem to be a little cheaper than other resorts in the NE --lodge while dated is big with lots of seating (though it can get crowded) -ample free parking. Also they don't make you park tightly like at some other places, so you don't need to fear dings (not to mention it makes parking easier) -not too far from nj -rental return process is very quick Cons: -lessons could be improved. Lots of wasted time... where the kids are sitting around. I booked a private lesson for the 2nd day but even that had wasted time (20min going down the bunny slopes even though I already told them that he had already mastered that) -instructors don't really spend that much time talking to the kids. If you are an experienced skier, Shawnee might be better for you given its proximity to metropolitan areas. But it is a horrible place for beginners. Their only bunny slope is usually as crowded as the subway and not well kept (i.e. icy). Many of their instructors are subpar compared with other places I have been to. During my group lesson, an older man by the name of Ed Gaba yelled at a woman who was having trouble putting her foot into the ski heel binding to "stop fooling around". That really stood out for me. When you can't figure out the math problem, does your tutor say "hey, dummy, stop fooling around"? Completely unprofessional. I also happened to have a private lesson on the same day. My instructor was an older man by the name of John Wick. It was his last lesson and he was in a rush to leave, so much so that he skied in front of me down the slope each time, from the top to the lift, telling me to "follow him" and not even stopping to see where I was. I learned nothing from him and it was a total waste of money. My good experiences with instructors (none from Shawnee), skied with me down the slope and did not leave me to my own devices.
