Backpacks, tents and boots...oh my! I don't think I've ever said this before and I probably never will again, but I wish I lived in New Jersey. More specifically, Paramus, New Jersey. The day I found Campmor.com online while browsing the interwebs for hiking/ backpacking equipment deals, everything changed...for the better. Yes, I still visit my local brick and mortar stores like REI and Adventure 16, but Campmor is an online force to be dealt with. Both price and selection are paramount when shopping for equipment and Campmor has both bases covered. Much like REI's website, Campmor's online store is laid out in a very organized and common sense fashion. They even have a "hot deals" section which lists heavily discounted items as well as returns or slightly blemished goods. If you order from their site and get on the their mailing list, they also send you this thick little catalog made out of newspaper like material with what looks like drawn images of the product they carry. It's phenomenal porcelain throne reading material. If you ever have any issues, their customer service is incredibly easy to deal with and I think based here in the US...local to New Jersey if I remember correctly. Maybe one day I'll get to visit one of their stores in the Garden State...maybe one day. read more

Bought my first item through Campmor online. When I removed it from the envelope, the packaging had a handwritten tag stuck on the side stating the correct size. Thought that seemed odd--then when I took the item out of the package, it was *two* sizes off. Contacted them via the web site advising I would be returning the item for a refund (did not receive a reply), then followed their numerous instructions and returned the item today (made sure to get a tracking number). Will see how long it takes for a refund applied to my card. Also will see if they refund the shipping cost, as they claim they will do when the refund is caused by their error. Before buying from Campmor I had found the item from another seller for less, but due to a couple of issues with that seller's site I was concerned I might get an incorrect order, so ordered from Campmor instead. Gotta love the irony. Update: They did refund the amount of the item, plus 60% of the shipping cost. Their return policy states 'we will refund the POSTAGE if the return is due to our error'. No doubt the 40% They did not refund was a 'handling' charge--however, I will still contact them as the invoice does not differentiate 'shipping and handling' and the return was due to their error. I have read a lot of bad reviews for them going back at least to 2010 and notice they have a D- rating with the Better Business Bureau--normally I read reviews first but this time I didn't. My one--and only--Campmor experience is a good reminder to check out the seller first. read more

Do not have these guys work on your bike I had them do a complete overhaul on my mountain bike, it was expensive and they completely screwed it up. The gears don't hold. They jump in and out whether going up hill or just cruising but the worst is they can't even screw on a pedal. I just walked, and pedaled on one leg, 3 miles home because they put a pedal on wrong and it fell off while I was riding. Completely stripped the crank arm. I don't think they are mechanics I think they just hire anyone with tools who likes to work on bikes. read more

While searching for a new bicycle for my 10 year old son we started at Dick's which had no selection and no clue, Sports Authority which was better but we still couldn't find what we wanted. We then tried local bike shops which were unanimously horrible. Westwood Cycle, The Bicycle 2 both act like they are superior to you and are doing you a favor all for $400. Stopped in Campmor as a last resort. While they did not have a big selection they did have "Bob". This guy was fantastic, he took his time and even let my son try the bicycles in the parking lot. While I ended up spending more than I wanted, $500, I felt I got a vastly superior bike to the others I had looked at and the service that made me feel confident in my purchase. read more

Best location in North NJ for purchasing anything camping/hiking related. In my opinion they are much more competitive than Ramsey Outdoors and REI with sometimes better pricing than online. Store always had plenty of people to help answer any questions. However, do not sign up for their mailing list as they will sell your information to Music Club, Credit Card companies, etc. I know because I use fake names for mailing lists to know if a place starts selling my information. I told this to the cashier today when purchasing an item and she just shooed me away saying sternly "have a nice day" in such a manner akin to "dont tell the customers behind you in line the truth about this and get the hell out". This is why they receive 4 stars and not 5... That said, I have bought the following items from here over the years: trail maps, outdoors boors, compression sacks, eno hammocks, or hats, gloves, pants, belts, stove pieces, water purification tabs, hiking shoes, wool socks/liners, rock climbing harness / shoes, etc etc. Definitely recommend them... just dont sign up for their mailing list! read more

Campmor is the best. Seriously, they've been around for decades and they're still the king of outdoor. EMS...REI...LL Bean...forget about it! They sell it all here. While they specialize in all things outdoor, you can still find things within the sporting goods realm here. Campmor, however, should not be confused for a sporting goods store. What Campmor has always and will continue to excel in is the plethora of all things outdoor. I think it surprises some of my friends when they discover that I know ANYTHING about outdoor equipment, hiking gear, backpacks, etc. Yeah, I'm kind of a city girl... But I happen to have two pairs of Merrel hiking boots (summer and winter appropriate) Teva water hiking shoes (love those) a Kelty backpack and daypack, a Lowe Alpine utility bag, a $30 waterproof shell that folds into its own pocket (wish I could find another one of those) North Face snowboarding gloves and ear warmers, and a variety of other Campmor gems that I've acquired over the years. It may be that all my outdoor equipment and clothing isn't getting quite enough usage to justify its purchase, but I would go so far as to say that the prices and service at Campmor make up for every day that I DON'T use my gear. One day I will leave the city and hike around Vermont. And when that day comes, I will be READY, damnit. I love this place. I love that most reviewers here have given it five stars. Experienced with their online store and telecom customer service rather than in person. Below average customer service. I ordered a pair of shoes to be delivered before a certain day. Since I ordered late in the evening, I didn't think it was going to arrive on time so I ordered from Amazon, which had 2-day shipping. I decided to try and cancel the order as soon as possible. I tried contacting their customer service the day I placed the order and day after via email, live chat, and phone and still could not get a hold of anyone. Once it had shipped, no one had control of the situation and I could only wait for it to arrive and return it. Returned it following their policy, which was simple yet not secure. You basically wrote down your personal information on the invoice and shipped it back. They definitely should rethink this old process of returns and exchanges and do them electronically. But I was not reimbursed for shipping charges since they only reimburse shipping charges that are fixed on the order itself -- that means that don't refund shipping costs for refunds. Representative on the phone was not interested when I tried asking about this and immediately sent me to talk to her supervisor. TLDR: Bad customer service and return policy. Would not recommend if you were just planning on buying and keeping your purchase without hassle. read more

I've been shopping here for 25 years now, and it's grown from the only real camping store in north Jersey to... well, the only camping store I'd ever know to look for something. Here's a small list of what I've bought from Campmor over the years: - trail maps - topographical maps - cycling shorts - pocket knives - polarized sunglasses - internal frame pack - Peak 1 sleeping bag (down to neg20 F) - ground tarp - climbing rope - Vasque midweight hiking boots - Merrel TrailMocs (when they first came out no less!) - hiking socks - Teflon cooking set - tent pegs - Eureka Tetragon 7 tent - foam sleeping pads - thermal underwear - marked down t-shirts and button-down shirts - Russell shorts - Silva compass I could've paid more for any and all of the above; the maps you can't seem to find anywhere else, really. They have more sleeping bags and tents to evaluate than any other place, plus all the gear you might need to go anywhere, do anything. Well, actually, Ramsey Outdoors has better deals and much more fishing/ hunting equipment, but for hiking, camping, cycling, backpacking, (trail) running, and expedition outfitting, I don't know of a better place. -C read more

As ridiculous as it is, I went here for my first time recently. I say it's ridiculous because I grew up only about 25 minutes away from here and have known about it for at least 20 years! I used to get their catalog and I have visited their website numerous times. I have to admit that when I pulled into the parking lot I was thinking wow, this place looks dated. I was expecting more of a giant warehouse kind of a building. About two minutes into the store, any thought of being disappointed were gone. I was too busy noticing all the merchandise. As I made my way around the store it seemed to go on forever. I turned the corner and the there was another room with an insane number of tents on display. I really enjoyed that fact. Most stores just don't have the room to display a lot of tents. They easily had 30 tents sitting there for you to check out. The sales staff knows what they're talking about. Each department has it's set of employees who seem to be quite knowledgeable. The prices overall are competitive with a few here and there prices that are below the competition. I'll definitely be back since visiting once you just don't have enough time to check it all out. read more

The best camping/outdoors store in the region by far. Forget REI, EMS and Ramsey Outdoors, they don't compare. If Campmor doesn't have it, you probably don't need it...well except for fishing equipment, they don't carry that. But for camping, hiking, biking, climbing and paddling, Campmor can't be beat. Prices are OK, nothing really special, but the selection is outstanding. You can get some very good deals on clearances somethings though. The staff is very knowledgeable, Go to the pack selection and a former AT thru hiker might be helping you select a pack, go to tents and there is a good chance someone there has spent a few nights in the tents you are interested in. Stop by footwear and everyone helping you will be a veteran hiker. Beware though, this place can be dangerous to your pocketbook. We often need to stop for a few odds and ends before our camping trips and too often walk out spending a few hundred bucks. read more

This place has been here forever since i was a kid. They have most things you would need from bicycles, sunglasses, tents clothing, you name it! I have been shopping at this place since I was a kid. Still the same. It has great discounts on 'seconds', cosmetic flawed items and last years model equipment. I'm usually going to get it dirty anyway, and it saves me a ton of dinero. I made an online purchase of two pairs of Patagonia pants. I used the size chart when ordering. These pants were two-three sizes too big upon arrival. According to their packing return slip, If I needed to return the items, do so with the return slip and receipt. It said nothing about tags. I returned the items in the same week I purchased them. They said I had laundered the items and didn't have the tags. They didn't give me a full refund. They only refunded me for one pair and these pants were 80$ each. Tags should have been included as a requirement for full refund on the return slip mailed with the pants. When you have an online business you need to be more specific in your return policy wording and not steal money. I will never purchase from them again and beware others of buying clothing from them. They will probably say it was laundered as they did with me and not give you your full refund.. read more

Before the explosion of e-commerce, Campmor was the greatest outdoor store in the world. The printed catalogue was anticipated by adults like kids waiting for the Sears Wish Book to arrive in the mail before Christmas. The selection was vast and the staff was incredibly knowledgeable. If you were preparing to take the Cub Scouts camping in the county park or planning a climb up Everest, Campmor had the gear you needed. In 2020, I can type "trekking poles" into the Amazon search field and have hundreds of brands, models and prices delivered to my doorstep in 2 days. Campmor only sells poles by Leki (which are great BTW). The store is a sad shell of its former glory with a smaller footprint, sparse shelves and terrible store hours (11 am-4 pm) BUT all in all I'm glad it's still around because there are some things you shouldn't purchase online. I hike around 200 miles annually so I do not cut corners on hiking boots. Two years ago I bought boots online and regretted it, vowing never to do so again. I made the 45 minute drive to Campmor and the salesperson spent 90 minutes explaining how a boot should fit. He measured my feet, asked me about what trail conditions I'll be using the boots on and handed me 4 different boots for me to try on. We looked at different boot inserts and talked about our favorite hiking trails. He taught me what to feel and look for in a hiking boot. I also picked up a pair of microspikes and the clerk showed me why the brand I selected was a good choice and how to install them properly on my boots. You'd never get such customer service at a massive chain like Dick's and Campmor is more affordable and less snooty than REI (and just as far from my house). Campmor in 2020 has unfortunately been left reeling in the wake of the Internet and I really hope they hang on because there isn't an outdoor retailer near my house that has the customer service that Campmor still offers. read more

Usually stop at Campmoor one a month and never come out with what I went in for. Went last week for bicycle rims and left with a handknited, heavy fleece lined snowboard hat for $18.00, new messenger bag (slightly damaged) for $26.00, ziptop fleece sweater by Prana @ $36.00 (full retail) but what the hell somebody has to pay retail. Most designer/name brands are fairly priced and thier Campmoor house brand products are very cheap but not always the best quality. You really have to carefully check the material thickness, workmanship and fit before buying. Campmoor's return policy is good but who needs Rt. 17 traffic any more than necessary. Fun place to shop for outdoor types and there is always a bargin or some crazy thing to make you slide out the plastic. Very knowledgable staff and they let you wander around. Lots of camping, bicycle, kayak/canoe, snowboard, hiking, etc. to browse. read more

Without a doubt the best brick and mortar outdoor gear and clothing store in the tri-state area and a very competitive online retailer. The store manages to carry an enormous assortment of brands at very low prices without just stocking last years models or colors or off brands. That said, they do have their own off brand label which is very high quality at a fraction of the price of the major labels. I still have a Campmor puffy coat, ski pants and rain pants that have outlasted my Marmot and North Face. The store covers almost every outdoor activity except downhill skiing and snowboards. I went literally next door to EMS to look for the same boot because CM didnt have my size and I needed them that day. Night and day difference. This is the company that for years was the no-frills, black-n-white newsprint mail order catalog company. These days they have a great online presence and store. For summer camping, I ordered the Grand Trunk Skeeter Beater Hammock. It came and I took it on a Scout camping trip with my son's troop. I had a tarp to hang over it--so even if it rained I would be OK. Did it rain? Well, did it rain on Noah? Yes it came a flood! My hammock was hung perfectly dry and while the other Scoutmasters and scouts had to resign themselves to lying atop a bed of wet soggy tent floors--I was smiling like a Cheshire cat as I climbed into my high and dry hammock. I sat down in the hammock and all was well until I tried to hoist my legs into the hammock. EPIC FAIL!!! I spun around that hammock like a window shade furling up. The mosquito netting ripped and the zipper flew off into the mud as I splashed down into a mudpuddle as well. I don't think it is very Scoutmaster-like to spew the string of obscenities that "somehow" came out of my mouth as I knelt in the mud. Luckily the verbal barrage was lost in the maelstrom and none of the boys heard my outburst. What does this have to do with Campmor? I called them this morning to see if I might return the ruined hammock. They are sending me a brand new replacement with a box to return the damaged hammock in with a prepaid postage sticker. That is great customer service that is refreshing in this faceless era of internet shopping. I remain a loyal customer to Campmor! read more

How did I find this place? My hiking aficionado uncle told me my Nike hightops weren't adequate for the trails. Walking over to the boots section, you'll be treated to a wall of shoes and you can stare at them aimlessly or take the advice of one of the knowledgeable salespeople there. For my experience, I had the wonderful Mr Vitale, I wish I could remember his first name, but I'm better with Family Names. He had tons of knowledge and made shopping for hiking boots a quick and painless experience. I enjoyed having his advice on what gear I'd need before going out and hitting the trails. Best camping store in the area. I know people who drive over an hour to come here. Their stock fluctuates through the year. If you come at the beginning of the season of whatever sport you do they are usually packed with supplies. Off season shopping can be little more difficult. EMS next door is ok, but Campmor has a consistently better selection, and lower prices. The only place around the has more stuff is Paragon in the city. read more

I came here recently to pick up some new climbing gear (harness, shoes), and I was very impressed. the selection isn't huge, but it's comparable to other places I've been (Eastern Mountain Sports, Blue Ridge Mountain Sports, Hudson Trail Outfitters), and the quality of the merchandise they carry is excellent. the staff member who helped me was super friendly, very knowledgeable, and a fun guy to work with. it made the experience so much better. I ordered an item online from Campmor and they fulfilled the order with another similar item (different color and style) relabeled as the one I ordered. When I called to complain, I was told they had been out of the item I ordered (and would be for at least 6 weeks) and the customer service rep said he "didn't know why they keep doing this" which suggested to me either they knowingly fulfilled the order with a different item (bait and switch) or their order fulfillment department is prone to errors. In either case, I can find other online stores that will ship the same commodity merchandise correctly and at the same price. On the positive side, they did fulfill the order quickly, though it was the wrong one and they were friendly when responding to my complaint. read more

Purchased a Swiss Army Knife from them online. Great pricing, fast service to my home on the opposite coast. The knife arrived however missing one of the tools that it's supposed to include, and when I inquired with Campmor about providing me the missing piece, the "Customer Service" Rep informed me that Victorinox (manufacturer of Swiss Army Kinves) "doesn't include that item" and that the internet image on Campmor's own website which DID show it, was wrong and he then told me "we need to change that graphic." He offered me Victorinox's telephone number and told me "perhaps you can sweet-talk them out of the non-included piece" and implied that Campmor had no further interest in resolving the omission. I know more about this product than he did, and indeed that item IS included with that model, and DID call Victorinox who told me she'd mail me the missing tool. She also confirmed what I already knew....that piece should have been included with my purchase. Based on Campmor's "hands clean" approach to my issue I'll not spend another penny there and would warn anyone else considering Campmor that they were done with me once they hit my credit card and shipped my product.
