My husband and I have been enjoying Can Can for years before we even moved here; it has been the site of many celebrations, has become our go-to "happy place", and our regular brunch spot. When we heard that the restaurant had been bought by a corporate restaurant group, we were devastated--we hoped the same quality and care that we had loved for years would remain, but were prepared to start numbering Can Can's days. Unfortunately, those days feel like they are dwindling. The price of food has jumped up, and the quality has gone down. The nickle & diming choices that the corporate overlords are making are becoming more evident. The main reason we come here is for the amazing servers and bartenders. It has been a real shame to see the incredible folks that work here be treated worse and worse, and many have quit or been fired (for "offenses" that would be part of the normal job description for any other bar--comping drinks, taking a shot with a customer...etc). Once the last of our favorites leave, so will we. The food is simply not good enough to come for alone. The new owners do not seem to understand that *relationships* are what keep places like this going. As they drive away their talented staff who have dedicated years to this restaurant, they will lose their loyal clientele as well. read more

Now I understand why this place is rated below 4 stars overall. We're visiting from Texas, and some friends who live in the area recommended that we stop by for a mid-afternoon snack. When we arrived, the person at the host stand was friendly. We asked to sit outside and were told there would be a 5-10 minute wait. While we were waiting, another guest walked up and was seated outside immediately. It wasn't in the same section where we eventually sat, but it was still surprising given what we had just been told. Unfortunately, the service never really improved from there. Our waitress was lukewarm at best and immediately tried to upsell us to sparkling water, which we declined. We ordered two salads, a glass of wine for me, and a beer for my husband. The wine pour was surprisingly small. When our salads arrived, we asked for pepper. Our waitress went inside, brought out the pepper mill, set it on the table, and walked away without offering to grind it for us. We've never experienced that before, and even some nearby diners commented that they hadn't either. Overall, we were extremely disappointed with the experience and would not return. The one bright spot was meeting some wonderful people while sitting outside. At least there are still some genuinely friendly folks around Carytown. read more

This restaurant is amazing! The crispy oysters were delicious. The boeuf bourginon was extremely tender. The moules frites were fresh, although the fries got cold and soft quickly. I was so excited to try Can Can Brasserie when I was in Carytown recently. The building is beautiful and vintage. We ordered a round of cocktails and several appetizer to share amongst the table. My favorite was the beef tartare but the pear salad and beet stack were also good. My cocktail, the Lucky Lady, was delicious, very unique and spirit forward which I like. The cocktails took very long to arrive, they didn't come until we had completely finished all of our apps. The server did acknowledge and apologize for the wait. We also split several of the main dishes between our table including Croque Monsieur, pan seared rockfish (my favorite), chicken, and Beef Bourguignon. All of them were good but I wasn't blown away by any. Overall, we enjoyed our meal, however I'm not sure the level of experience and food quality was in line with the price point. read more

Went with the family during the holiday season and enjoyed our dinner out. Only went one time before, and that was possibly before yelp was even invented lol. One star off because it took a while to order, parking is a challenge and the price point seems a few dollars too high. For cocktails/mock tails, we got the Pornstar martini and the Bearclaw and everyone really enjoyed them. I loved my bearclaw- perfect balance of alcohol to flavor. The waitress was very friendly but hadn't tried many of the menu items due to her plant-based diet, so we couldn't rely on her for recommendations. Luckily, one of my friends had been here before and suggested the mussels. I ordered that, and they came with a large order of fries that were a bit cold but still tasty (they would probably taste great when served hot and fresh). Get the garlic aioli on the side! The sauce the mussels came in was delicious (garlicky and buttery). The escargot also came in a delicious sauce and was perfectly cooked. TLDR; beautiful restaurant but incredibly overpriced. We left disappointed. Vibe - this restaurant is STUNNING! The lights and atmosphere make it a great place for a date or drinks with friends. Drinks - my friend and I both ordered espresso martinis. They were good but standard and certainly not worth $17!! I was shocked by the price. Food - I was surprised to see that most of the dinner entrees were $26+. I ordered the French onion soup and croque madam but I didn't love either. Went to Can Can for their cafe on a Saturday. The Can Can Coffee House is open Wednesday - Saturday from 7am - 10am according to their social media. A friend and I ordered the chai tea latte and shared a couple pastries. The chai teas were a great size, perfect temperature, and absolutely delicious! I enjoyed it a lot and would definitely get it again. Everything was ready fairly quickly and the employee who took our order was attentive. The pastries were okay. I thought they were a bit dry and not as fresh as I would've expected - definitely not fresh French quality. Overall, I enjoyed the ambiance of the "coffee house" and the chai tea a lot! Venue: The location is right in the heart of a busy and happening area and has an attached parking lot. We were lucky enough to snag a close spot and not have to walk far. Upon entry, the chatter of busy diners and bar patrons was a bit loud as it is very open but that is also usually a good sign on a Wednesday night. They had a nice display of old world beers, wine options, and spirits on the wall behind the bar. They made great use of the space to maximize seating but also give you space to move and breathe a bit: Service: the front podium staff was very friendly and directed us to the bar while we waited for our table. The bartender had a great sense of humor when explain the newly released holiday drink menu. Once seated, our server's assistant was quick to greet and advise us our server was wrapping up with a large group and would be over soon. The assistant did a great job making sure we were taken care of. Once the server came over, she was knowledgeable of the menu and very accommodating with suggestions for our dietary restricted party members. The food took longer than expected and a complimentary bread basket was dropped off. The server did a great job checking in for new cocktail orders but not bothering the group. All around great serving experience and I'm disappointed in myself I couldn't remember her name. Food: The food was solid. I ordered the chicken with sweet potato and Brussel sprouts. Peers at the table ordered a burger and a couple steaks. Next round I would probably go with the NY strip over the chicken. The desserts were a hit with the group and didn't last long on the table. She explained the menu, made recommendations, and took our orders promptly. Now for the food. We both started with the French onion soup. It was rich and cheesy, with lots of tender onions and broth-soaked baguette slices. A great start. We ordered a half lobster before the entrees. The lobster was fresh and tender, but there were only 3 bites of edible lobster meat. Smallest lobster we've ever seen. They make a big deal of serving it in a large bowl over ice, with cocktail sauce, butter, and aioli. All for 3 bites? That amounts to almost $10 a bite! Entrees were mixed. The duck confit cassoulet was just what you'd expect. Tender, unctuous duck, over a smoky mixture of creamy beans, sausage, and vegetables. Very satisfying. The steak frites were just OK. The frites were amazing: thin, crispy, and lightly salted. The accompanying NY strip was a disappointment. The steak was tender and cooked perfectly. It was just way too salty. When we took a bite, the flavor was delicious, but the aftertaste was pure salt, as if we gargled with salt water. My carnivore husband left about 1/3 of it on his plate. The Marjolaine dessert was fabulous. Almond, hazelnut, chocolate, coffee... yummy! The wine list is well curated, and we enjoyed a lovely Sancerre and Bordeaux with our meal. read more

Came here for brunch with a friend on Sunday at noon. Good thing she made a reservation the night before, I think the only thing available was outdoors however it was chilly and when we arrived, we asked if we could sit inside and they were able to give us a table near the entrance, which was not ideal, but I'm glad that they could accommodate. The tables are fairly small and the chair backs are round, so there really isn't anywhere to put your bag. I got the steak sandwich with fries. It was very delicious, filling and large portioned with lots of fries that I had left over. Our server asked if we wanted aïoli with our fries and we said yes, but later found out that it was a dollar for it, which isn't a big deal but would've been nice to be mentioned that there would be an extra charge. We got beignets as an appetizer which were delicious. I ordered tea which came in a very small pot that was just enough for one cup. They did offer to refill it and I said yes. My friend got orange juice, which she asked if it was fresh squeezed and was told that it was, but it was not. I was visiting a friend in Richmond, so I can't compare it to the handful of places that I went while I was there. But it's pretty good and very cute and French. read more

Appetizers - The escargots did not taste of anything and were a little rubbery. The herb sauce unfortunately did not do enough for it. The French onion soup was super duper salty and wish it came with some bread like the escargot did. The crispy oysters were more breading than oyster. The chickpeas fries were new to me. They were rather soft and lacking much dimension. Mains - Boeuf bourguignon was just okay, beef was salty and thankfully the potato puree helped balance that out. The duck in the duck l'orange was probably the best thing. The duck was nicely cooked and flavorful. The broccolini was nice. The mushrooms were juicy and terribly salty. The red cabbage was really sweet and it didn't feel like it fit with the whole dish. There was supposed to be a cauliflower puree with this but I don't think I saw or tasted it. Service was good. Located in the heart of Carytown in a bistro setting, the open-facing setup of the restaurant on a warm evening makes for an absolutely lovely atmosphere. Came without a reservation around 6:30 pm for a party of 2 and were seated at a table immediately but we definitely got lucky with that, so I would highly recommend making a reservation if possible! The moules frites were delicious and came with a solid amount of mussels that were fresh and tender as well as fries which were crispy and tiny in size (though definitely not in portion). We asked for some bread to dip in the white wine broth which was perfect to soak up the flavors - our server was super friendly, attentive, and very accommodating. Prices were reasonable (entree was $25 including tax without tip). An all-around wonderful experience in terms of food, service and ambiance! There is a parking lot right next to the restaurant, but spots can be difficult to come by at peak dinner hours so street parking may be a better bet. read more

Frites were fine. No salt and pepper on table, though I was offered fresh cracked pepper. Finally my partner's refired food came out and the manager was very kind and accommodating. She comped the chicken from our bill which we did not ask for but appreciated. That was good service. After we finished our mains we were asked if we wanted to see dessert menus. As I am here to celebrate my birthday, I definitely did. After looking at the menu our server finally noticed the card on the table and apologized for not saying anything earlier. I ordered the crème brûlée & it came at a good pace. We asked for the check and the birthday dessert was not comped. I've worked in the hospitality industry for a long time and I've never seen this. We thought maybe he just forgot, but didn't want to ask as we were ready to leave because it was extremely loud. Overall disappointed with the pacing of service in terms of dishes being dropped, the flavor of the chicken sandwich and the lack of a free birthday dessert. But what really made my experience unforgettable was our server, Okalani. She was such a gem! I have a gluten allergy, and she went above and beyond to make me feel safe and cared for. She knew all the details about cross-contamination and made sure I felt comfortable with my meal choice. She even recommended something I normally wouldn't order because of the bread and tomatoes, and it ended up being one of the most delicious breakfasts I've ever had. I'm still thinking about it two days later! As someone considering a move to Richmond, I was a little worried about finding both foodie spots and gluten-free options. My Dad has never been to a French restaurant, so I decided to take him here to celebrate his Birthday for Sunday brunch. Prior to this visit, I hadn't been to Can Can in about 10+ years so I was equally excited to visit. We were able to conveniently find parking in Carytown Court instead of having to park on the street; lucky for us as this parking lot can be quite full. Not pictured in this photo nor on the menu is the London Fog that their barista was able to make upon request. I love London Fogs and got lucky that they were able to accommodate. From the Classics section of the menu, I ordered the Quiche Du Jour (Quiche of the Day) which happened to be lobster and paired it with their Onion Soup. Under the Les Oeufs (Eggs) section of the menu, Dad ordered the Scramble Tartine along with the Roasted Beets salad. His Scramble Tartine came out in the form of a french omelette, and ever since this day, I have been obsessed with making french omelettes at home because they are so pretty and satisfying to eat with their buttery exterior and custard-like interior. We also ordered Bread Service (mixed basket of housemate bread with butter) along with a 1/2 dozen Basket of Beignets (pronounced bin YAY), which I described to my Dad as soft pillowy doughnuts. I also ordered three macarons so that my Dad could blow out a candle on his Birthday. Despite not having been back for 10+ years, Can Can is just as lovely as I remembered.
