Based on other reviews we were so excited to try Chez Foushee. Unfortunately our service and experience was... really not great. Come with low expectations, come casual, and you'll have a better time. Or, for casual french food, go to Can Can, for fancy date night, try L'opossum. Restaurant was cramped, tables waaay too close for a nice restaurant, and way too small, we struggled to fit plates on our 2-top. (At $50/plate, struggle shouldn't be happening) For the first time in my life I had to ask the servers to please pre-bus the table, our plates sat until we asked they be removed. Biggest complaint with food and drinks was lack of balance. For example we ordered the baked Camembert, which arrived on a cold plate (as did all our warm dishes), and gelatinized quickly. There was a full wheel of cheese and barely a tablespoon of jam, so flavors were great for the first few bites, then blah. Rinse and repeat this with every dish we ordered. I ordered a cocktail and it was very strong, unbalanced, so I asked for a glass of wine. Our server was spread thin and checked on us rarely. I ordered the filet and found it lacked seasonal or French inspiration, frankly it was overwhelmingly bland and tough for a filet (cooked med rare). My husband's entree was the risotto, which was the best bite of meal, shrimp was fine - however, the portion was very small compared to my entree. Like, you would think his portion was an appetizer, compared to my plate. He cleaned his plate, helped me with my plate and my plate had food when we left. The space also had really poor ventilation. The hostess wore too much perfume, and the scent would linger distractingly at the table every time she walked by. Another patron was sat near us and his cologne dominated the palate, we skipped desert. This isn't an issue at any other restaurant I've dined in recently, so I have to assume the HVAC needs a fresh filter or something. When they reset a table next to us, they fanned the cloth AT us, flicking any dust directly on our plates and food. Linens weren't steamed, very wrinkly tables for the price point and branding as an upscale spot. Don't plan to return and would not recommend. read more

The moment you walk inside, you feel like you've been transported to a cozy little French restaurant. The atmosphere is absolutely beautiful--warm, charming, and romantic with the perfect cozy vibes. I went by myself this time, and I can honestly say I would love to come back for a date night. The acoustic music playing in the background matched the ambiance perfectly and made the whole experience feel even more special. The food was amazing! My server recommended most of the things I ordered, and every single dish was a 10/10. The service, the flavors, the atmosphere--it all came together beautifully. Chez Foushee was the perfect setting for a celebration dinner and it truly delivered. From the moment we walked in, we were captivated. Draped in lush florals and shades of green, the space felt like stepping into a garden. We started with drinks and bread and butter, simple but exactly what we were in the mood for. I ordered the K's Bouquet and the flavors were incredible. My boyfriend went with a mule and loved every sip. For our entrees, I had the market special, a grilled salmon with broccolini, which was absolutely delicious. My boyfriend ordered the filet accompanied by brussels sprouts. We finished with two more drinks, Aire De Mars, before heading out, but not before our waiter insisted we try their famous Lemon Butter Cake. We are so glad we listened. It is the perfect hybrid between a key lime pie and a cheesecake and truly was the best ending to our night! To top it all off, as we were leaving, our waiter and another team member stopped us to take our photo and even perfected the lighting. It was such a thoughtful touch that made the night feel even more special. We will absolutely be back and cannot recommend Chez Foushee enough! read more

Wonderful experience here for an impulsive girls night out! Beautiful interior, incredibly friendly service from both the host and our waiter. Loved the antique designs and the dinnerware. The chefs hand written note for the specials was a nice touch, and it seems like they are very interested in an intimate dining experience. Highly recommend the spring special of asparagus bisque... I should have gotten a bowl! The steak frite was cooked perfectly and everything was hot and fresh. Cocktails were amazing, just all around a good time. I will definitely be bringing guests here the next time we drive in to RVA. read more

A Richmond restaurant staple, Chez Foushee provides the classic linen tablecloth elevated dining experience. The space feels intimate and welcoming, with soft lighting and classic decor that evoke a French-inspired dining room. The staff are welcoming and ensure a pleasant experience. With their slower pacing, they wouldn't be the best for a quick lunch, but absolutely for a nice evening out. Their menu blends French with Southern influences. I'd recommend their trout meunière or steak frites. Though they're not cheap, with entrees starting in the 30s, I think their portions are pretty generous. The plating itself is a bit dated and could use some refinement. Overall, if you're looking for a classic elevated dinner experience, Chez Foushee would be a good bet. read more

My first visit was during one of their Friday night French Salon events & my most recent visit was this weekend to celebrate my Wedding Anniversary. I think they have the best steak frites in town! My only complaint is that I wish they had aioli to go with the fries. The salad verte was the perfect starter to the steak as well! Grilled Salmon: cooked perfectly, the lemon creme fraiche on top complimented it very well. I do wish there was a bit more asparagus or potatoes on the side. I love this cute French spot. Back at the height of the pandemic, we ordered an extravagant takeout meal from here that made our day. I've been back since and find that it's more of a Southern and French fusion spot. The entrees I've ordered here in the past are good, but not necessarily something I go out of my way to get. I do, however, adore their desserts here. On my recent visit, my partner and I wanted to go on a last minute date late into the evening and decided to grab dessert from Chez Foushee. I'm so happy we did. They seated us at an intimate table not far from the piano player. We had a great view for people watching. It was extremely romantic. The vibes in this spot are immaculate. Even the bathroom is so french (note that it's very tight and small, but in a cute way). I highly recommend this spot for a date night to grab drinks and dessert. Loved my dining experience at Chez Foushee. Dined for a friends birthday and started with the lavender love cocktail which was delicious. With dinner I enjoyed a nice white burgundy blend which I hadn't had before. I don't drink a ton of French wine but would love to after enjoying those so much. My appetizer was the carrots which were good not amazing. The salmon entree was delicious and incredibly filling i was a little surprised by the portion but in a good way! My sides were. Loved the asparagus but the mashed potatoes were a little bland. The star of the evening was definitely the lemon butter cake. The perfect cross between lemon chess pie or bars and cheesecake. I'm already planning my trip back just for that! The service was awesome, thank you Cole! We had a delightful experience all around. The dim lighting, candle light, live piano music, and perfect sound level made for a great ambiance. The food was also very good. We started with the baked Brie, then got the salmon (was a special) and the beef bourguignon. All of it was delicious and came in perfectly portioned sizes. The service was fantastic too. The server was helpful and super attentive. They recommended a beautiful wine to go with our meal, and our water glasses were filled throughout the night without having to ask even once. Great little gem of a restaurant in downtown Richmond. It has a vegetable forward menu with a women chef and kitchen. I had pea risotto both vegan style and vegetarian style. I preferred the vegetarian but the vegan one was also really good. The mushroom stroganoff was the real show stopper. read more

My fiancé and I dined with another couple at Chez Foushee last night and had an absolutely lovely experience. Owner Whitney Cardozo has given the iconic space a much-needed facelift that retains the wonderful charm of old and that highlights the unique features of the interior. The fresh paint, thoughtful lighting and new furnishings add a depth and warmth to the ambiance. Individual lamps on each table, with dimmers that guests can control, adds to the intimacy of the experience. Live piano music, played by Demas Boudreaux, wafts beautifully in the space. Diners pause to clap softly at the conclusion of each piece. Let's be honest--there's nothing else like that in richmond! The food and service are suburb and are perfectly matched to their surroundings. The menu is French-inspired but not "frilly". It's simple food, executed beautifully. There are meat and seafood options, as well as variations for vegetarians. Our table enjoyed fried oysters--perfectly breaded, seasoned and fried to be crispy on the outside but tender and juicy on the inside. I don't really like oysters and I enjoyed these. Others enjoyed a carrot soup, whimsically served in an antique tea cup and a fresh green salad with a delicious house-made mustard vinaigrette. I had the steak frites for my entree. It was delicious. Perfectly seasoned flank steak, served spot-on medium rare was melt-in-my-mouth tender, drenched in a savory bordelaise sauce. It was surrounded by crisp house-cut fries and bright French green beans--a needed foil to the richness of the dish. My boo had the beef bougignon, with tender braised morsels of beef with carrots, onions and mushrooms topped with fluffy mashed potatoes. The bite I stole was wonderful--rich and savory as it should be. A perfect, hearty winter dish. Our friends shared the chicken pot pie and crab cake. I wasn't able to sample them, but they ate every bite and offered rave reviews. We shared two pieces of Chez's signature dessert--lemon butter cake-- to end our meal. This confection is a richmond institution and I am thrilled it lives on under this new iteration of the restaurant. It is best described as a cross between a key lime pie and cheesecake. It is tart and sweet and utterly delicious! We paired our meal with a two bottles of a lovely willamette valley Pinot noir, selected from a small but well-curated wine list. Service from Michael and Russel was lovely, and enhanced the experience. Folks often ask for recommendations of a special date-night spot on this page. Chez Foushee is it. It is, in a word, special. Diners be aware if you have a reservation it does not guarantee you a table for 2 hours like the website states. I recently dined here with my cousin on my last weekend visiting Richmond. We were seated at a small table in the dining room. The food was just decent not fabulous and the service was sub-par to what you would expect in a nicer establishment. I had a reservation at 6 and almost immediately after my desert was served we were asked to get up and move tables to accommodate a large reservation. We had not been seated for more than 1 hr and 30 minutes before being asked to move and i reluctantly moved to not make a scene. I was visibly upset and hoped the management or staff would do something to make it right but no one apologized and nothing was compensated off my bill for the terrible service. The wait staff was not as attentive as you would expect paying over $200 for dinner. I wrote a private review via resy and a manager called offering if I came back he would offer a discount. I would never go back to that establishment and spend more money just to get "a free appetizer" and he failed to make things right knowing I was from out of town and leaving. My recommendation is to eat somewhere else. This establishment is not worth the price and the service was subpar. Just know your table and reservation is not guaranteed and they seem to think asking people to stop mid dinner to move is standard. I don't think anyone's reservation should be more important than another. The service and management seem to be inexperienced. read more

Had not been to Chez Foushee in.... well too many years! So glad we decided to come for our special girls night dinner. The decor is beautifully historic with a modern open concept. Lovely marble bar with equally lovely service. We started off with the fried oysters which could not have been more perfectly fried. The camembert w/caramelized onions and fig jam was delish but the buttered crostini was not a good accompaniment. Would have preferred a hearty lightly toasted (or not) baguette. For dinner we ordered a couple of hanger steaks and frites. The steaks were rare and done to a 'melt in your mouth state', sumptuously surrounded in a bordelaise sauce. Oh man... I really need to break out the Julia Child cookbooks and learn how to make that divine sauce. We also ordered the mussels special.. who can resist yummy shellfish in a white wine sauce. Finished off with a decadent chocolate torte all the while sipping on a couple of bottles of Larouque Pinot Noir.. gonna be looking for that at my fave wine store. Came here on Valentine's Day and it was a very good experience, just the right amount of class to enjoy a nice brunch. Firstly, I want to mention that the free parking people are mentioning is in the lot just slightly east of the restaurant (on Grace). It will say in small type at the bottom-most part of the sign that Chez Foushee customers can park there. I had to hunt for this sign a bit myself, don't want to get towed on V-day! While I made a reservation for 11 am, there apparently was no need to: it was mostly empty both when we arrived and when we left. The interior of the restaurant is beautiful and very reminiscent of other European restaurants I have been to. We were quickly seated and seen by our server, who relayed the specials and drink options to us. I opted for a mimosa and my date some hot tea. The mimosa was good, though I suppose I expected something a little nicer on the champagne end for $9 a glass. We both opted for the eggs benedict, which was pleasantly presented and tasted great. The fruit that came with it was less enticing and a bit chewy, though the omelette part was memorably delicious. When other tables came in, our server disappeared a bit more than I would have liked, though perhaps he was just giving us our space. Sometimes it's hard to tell. In summary, I would consider coming here for brunch again, though this might not be my top pick. Overall: 3.5 stars ------------- Pros: - Omelets are delicious and nicely presented. - Interior is attractive and well-suited to a nice date or professional meeting. - Free parking is a nice bonus, especially in this area. Cons: - Service is a bit middling, perhaps not the ideal European experience. - Mimosa was weak, recommend against getting it. Same for the fruit side of the meal. read more

Truly only writing a review so that I remember I did go here and I loved it so incredibly much. The greeting at the door is enough to entice you to more.. gorgeous decor, a space with smiling, experienced, educated & wonderful staff, an old piano with candles burning atop it... such a pretty, classic feel. I love it. The food was out of control delicious. Started with the olives -- perhaps a few too many for only two people.. we needed about 1/4 of what came out. Still, nice to take home. I opted for the salmon special of the night and I must say -- this was the best salmon I have ever had in my life. I don't even want to go into it's details, but I will say, huge, plump piece with perfect skin-on seasoning that will blow your mind... my friend got the vegetarian risotto and raved about how delicious it was. Creamy, tasty, and plentiful. For dessert I tried, by the recommendation of our waiter, the Richmond classic Lemon Cake. Which, appropriately described as not cakey at all, but more on the lines of an ever so slightly gooey cheesecake, was absolutely delicious and a perfect end to the meal. Five stars all day long! When the local brunch joint was too crowded, we found Foushee on Yelp. I'm glad! It wasn't the crowded hipster joint, but a good new American with a French vibe joint. Definitely more upscale. Slightly pricier, but worth it not to wait 45 minutes. We had the chez Benedict. It was good. The hollandaise was a little thin, but the crab cakes had little filler. I liked them more than bread. The potatoes were flavorful, but room temp. I would have liked them hot. Good coffee. Good service. They are under renovations. That's good because the bathroom was not so great. read more
