So I asked applied to drive for them as it looked interesting but when they contacted me it was clear that the information on their website is misleading. Their website says that their travel stipend will cover most if not all airfare return and hotel costs "from $750.00 to $2500". The rep that called me told me that they only pay $500 for a delivery to Florida or California which is nowhere near what the website states. A return flight from Florida is about $250 + 3 nights hotel + transfer to airport = over $800 A return flight from California is about $250 to $490 + 4-5 nights hotel + transfer to airport = over $1,100 Either way I'd have a fair amount to pay out of pocket to deliver a car for them so that makes no sense for me to do. If they were willing to pay for the full hotel + flights + transfers then I'd have no issues paying for meals etc So website info is an outright lie. I declined to participate. read more

We have been using David's business for over 5 year driving our car back and forth from Toronto to Scottsdale without a problem. I judge companies when they go outside the box to help you out. I have been engaged with HitTheRoad.ca on three occasions, once down to Florida from Toronto, once cross-continent to California, and once from Florida back up to Toronto. They were all more-or-less well organized by the operator of the business and all three went off without any delay. The clients themselves were quite content to have their cars delivered safely, clean and on time and on two occasions I even got tipped. On all three trips I had a few days lee-way to check out national/state parks enroute or linger in a fun city. I would send periodic updates to let both the operator and client know of my progress. The only slight drag is having to wait the 30 days for the returned deposit. The first time around, I tried to challenge the policy by emailing repeatedly - my many emails were (now understandably) ignored, but at the 30 day mark, I was payed as promised and so it happened the other two trips. Rest assured, the deposit does get returned , but it requires some patience. An excellent way to travel on a tight budget and see the land. read more

Last year I did two trips with Hit the Road - one from Calgary to Richmond Hill via Canada and the other from Ottawa to Victoria (mostly via the US) driving over 8100 km in total. Hit the Road is a vehicle deliver service. I can't speak for the aspect of getting a vehicle delivered, because I've only used Hit the Road as a driver. As a driver you go to their website and find a route that interests you. The routes will vary from where the start to where they go to, and when they occur. You get your paperwork in order (valid driver's licence, driver's abstract, etc are just some of the things you'll need for a trip) and apply for a route. You'll be given a contract to sign before you can drive a vehicle. Driver's are required to pay a deposit, but this is an insurance for both you and the vehicle owner. As long as you deliver the vehicle to the destination on time and in good condition then you're deposit will be returned to you (although the returning portion takes time). Driver's will also be given some reimbursement for gas costs - it likely won't cover everything, but it helps. I chose to drive with Hit the Road because I had to go to Toronto, and because I love road trips and wanted to see more of Canada (and later the US). My first trip to (Calgary to Toronto) went off without any issues. It is a long drive particularly by yourself. You can have another driver with you, but you would need to discuss this with Hit the Road first. Hit the Road gives drivers plenty of time to get from point A to point B. They don't want their drivers on the road in the evening or for driving long periods of time, so the longest days I had on the road were about 8 hours. Driver's are also warned not to speed, obey traffic laws, etc. Basically Hit the Road wants you to deliver the vehicle in good condition, but they want to make sure your doing this safely and lawfully. On my 2nd trip from Ottawa to Victoria I hit a couple of small snags, but it wasn't anything that would deter me from using Hit the Road again in the future. Going from Ottawa to Victoria I had asked if it would be okay to drive through the US (via Sault Ste. Marie) because it would save me time. I experienced a bit of a delay at the US border crossing and was pulled into secondary screening at customs. Normally, as I was later told by Hit the Road's owner, dropping off a vehicle from Canada to the US involves specific paperwork and forms, but because I wasn't dropping off a vehicle in the US, just delivering it to Canada going through the US, the Customs officers were a bit hesitant to let me through; it was a bit stressful. I think border officials were also a bit confused at whether or not I was working for Hit the Road. Again this isn't a job, and really with other costs of travel (lodging, food, etc) you definitely won't be earning any kind of livable way of doing this. Hit the Road is a way to travel cheaply, and see different parts of Canada (and the US depending on your route), but it isn't a way to make money. The second small snag happened in rural Michigan when a vehicle in front of me spit a rock up, and cracked part of the windshield. It was noticeable, but I still felt it was safe enough for me to continue driving (didn't affect my visibility). I made sure to pull over (when it was safe) and take a photo of the window. I also phoned the owner of Hit the Road to let him know what had happened. He made sure to find out if I was okay first and foremost, and contacted the vehicle owner to find out what should happen. The vehicle owner was very understanding, and didn't charge or ask me to pay out of pocket for the window repair. I can't guarantee everyone's experience will be like this if damage happens to the vehicle they are driving, but this is how it was for me. This is also why you pay a deposit, in case something happens then you are covered or can at least get in for a repair. Hit the Road won't be for everyone. You need to have a good driving record, be reliable, and flexible. Both of my trips took about a week each, but I was able to see parts of my country and the US that I had never seen before. It is important to remember that Hit the Road doesn't offer return trips, so you'll need to find a way to get home or to wherever you're going to next yourself. I took the second trip (Ottawa to Victoria) trip because I hadn't booked a way to get home, and while Victoria isn't anywhere near where I live (Edmonton, Alberta) I was going in the right direction, and I still wasn't ready to stop traveling. If you only have a week or two of vacation time Hit the Road might not be for you, but if you have some flexibility with your job (or if you're retired) then Hit the Road is a great way to see North America. read more

I have delivered 6 cars with Hit The Road. My first was in 2011. I delivered an Audi from Toronto to Los Angeles. It was an amazing way to see the US. This was also my first experience with couch surfing as well and I was able to meet bunch of interesting people, find free accommodation and explore some parts of States that I probably never would have seen otherwise. Since then I always keep an eye on what trips are available and I try to take advantage of this service whenever I have the chance. I have done trips to Miami, Tampa, and a few trips to and from Phoenix. Mostly I've done the trips on my own. But the last trip I did with my Girlfriend, even though she doesn't drive. David made sure she had no trouble at Customs and we were able to see New York City, visit friends in Baltimore, and spend a night in Savannah before dropping the car off in Tampa. If you enjoy long drives and cheap travel you will definitely enjoy working with Hit The Road. read more

Save yourself the hassle and find another way unless you have an unnatural amount of patience, time and tolerance for bad manners. Our travel plans were severely upset because of the unreliability of the guy we were dealing with. He's a rude clown. We have been trying to drive a car for almost 2 months and were lead to believe we would be picking one up immediately, and we had sent everything required of us. We have been rudely ignored on several occasions causing us to miss our buses and also missing out on affordable flights. We have no confidence in this company/organisation/joke. Hittheroad.ca is such a great idea, i just wish the operators had more pride and consideration for potential drivers, It is not too much to ask for a brief email now and then to give us an idea as to what is going on. I do not feel i could blindly send 500dollars to a person who has no respect or organizational skills. read more

Want to add my word of warning. I had my ride with them in 2016 from Calgary to Halifax and I did over miles above the allowance that was in the contract. It was due to works on the highways as well as Canada is huge country and for hundred of kilometers you drive in the middle of nowhere (forest, preries etc.) and you need to go through the cities to do any basic shopping and for sleeping. My over miles was not like I went for a trip to Alaska, or to have fun riding someone else car. It was around 5% of the total distance. However he has decided to punish me by taking 250 C$ from my deposit for it. Quite high amount as the car was in perfect shape, no scratches and delivered before the time. Two months later I still did not receive remaining of the deposit. When I called him, he said that now he has decided to keep all of it and started screaming at me and blaming me for many things. When I calmly one by one explained all his concerns and was able to put down all his false arguments, then he had only one remaining: that I did not thanked him for the ride, that's why he is going to keep full deposit. Then I have forwarded him email I have sent him before, the day after the ride with my big Thanks for the ride to him. Since then there is a silence and I did not receive my deposit yet. After 3 years I know this money is already gone. If you still want to ride with them consider this: 1. he is not keen do give you back your deposit and will do anything, just finding any reason to keep it. 2. the car owner can also be a problem as in my case the owner did not wanted to pay me the expenses for the trip for petrol that was stated in the contract. 3. they are not honest because they change their mind about how much they will give you back 4. very often car is full of privete stuff of the car owner - you are responsible for that too, it can be stolen in the night and so on. You have to pay for secure parking lots. 5. if you want to travel then is better to do it like other Working-Holidays travellers (buy a car for 1500 CA, travel ,sell it back later) This is very risky trip as you are third party between car owner and the company. AND you take all the responsibility on you - police tickets, accidents, over mileage... you have no insurance and you cannot trust the company bec. he will not help you. As a Travel Professional, my first experience with HitTheRoad has been less than exemplary. Would I recommend them? Not at this point to be honest. Have applied tor 2 vehicles thus far with little or no success and just seem to get the runaround. I'm sure they are legit, however, in our industry, word of mouth and reputation is the key to success! Before attempting to try their service myself, I talked about them a lot and had mentioned to many of my students at the Tourism College as an option and means to travel, albeit, not free of course. As much as I had hoped this opportunity would work out and in the future, I would personally advise to save your time and effort and make alternative plans. Hi everyone, I just read those reviews about hittheraod.ca. So I have spend almost 6 month in canada in 2011. In this time a friend of mine and me (both from Germany) delivered 2 cars for this company. On the first occasion we met he owner personally in Toronto and he was very friendly and helpful. He showed us places to visit on a map for example. The car deliveries themselves worked out perfectly fine. We got the money for gas back, as it is written in the drivers agreement. The owners of the cars were also friendly and trusted us with their vehicles. We left our $500 deposit with the company until the end of our trip, for the event that we would do another delivery. But when we asked for our money back, we got it transferred within hours (of course the 4 weeks holding time were over). So I can't say anything bad about this way of travelling, except that there should be more people having their car delivered. Cheers Hendrik read more

HitTheRoad.ca is a recruitment website for a company called CanadaDriveAway (HitTheRoad.ca isn't registered as a company in Ontario). Both are owned and operated by the same person. The idea behind HitTheRoad.ca is that people who want to take a road trip deliver vehicles owned by CanadaDriveAway's customers: people who want their cars delivered somewhere. Drivers pay a deposit - $500 in my case - to ensure the safe delivery of the car. The trouble begins after your trip when you try to get you deposit back. One of the company owner's 'instructions' is to send in (via regular post) a signed receipt saying that you got your deposit refunded - BEFORE actually getting a dime back. Can you guess what doesn't happen next? That's right - you still don't get your deposit back. And the kicker is, there's nothing you can do about it and here's why. As a driver, you're neither a customer nor an employee of either HitTheRoad.ca or CanadaDriveAway. And although you sign an agreement, the agreement is strictly between you and the car owner: that is, there's no commercial transaction that takes place between you and CanadaDriveAway or HitTheRoad.ca. And since there's no commercial transaction, the Better Business Bureau won't process any complaint you make since it's 'beyond their purview.' In other words, if HitTheRoad's owner/operator decides he wants to rip you off for whatever reason, you're totally vulnerable. Potential drivers: Proceed with extreme caution!! read more
