Pre-packaged greens that are slimy and smelly, wilted red, yellow, and orange peppers, hot food bar that sits out likely far beyond acceptable limits, marketed "house made" sausage with far too much fat, poor quality beef, crappy chicken. I give a one star review because the cashiers are rude, unfriendly, and will NOT empty your basket. The literally stand there and look at you, sometimes on their phone, and say "would you empty your basket." They do not smile or say hello, thank you or have a nice day, even if you say hello and greet them nicely and say have a nice day. I am the CUSTOMER. I went in on Wednesday after 5 and the cashier told me to empty the basket she also told me where to return the basket! In fact, if they had emptied the basket to make it more efficient for everyone, I would have immediately returned the basket. I will try one more time at this store, and I go at least 3 times a week. Be warned, the next time they tell me to empty my basket, I will dump it on the counter and walk out the door. The other great qualities of this store are ruined by the cashiers. For the most part this is a fantastic store and great for the neighborhood. Since the remodel it is laid out, the stock is generally full, the produce section is terrific. The store is spotless and the customer service at the deli is great. The only reason I put 3 stars and not 5 is the customer service at checkout. I find them rude and not helpful. What's up with please empty your basket it will help me? I'm sorry, I don't work out at Canseco's and how much effort is it to reach in a basket and scan items? I may as well go to a bigger grocery store and use self-check out. There is absolutely no reason for this. Yesterday, the cashier would not even move the basket closer (I had other bags in my hands) and glared at me and said please move it closer. On top of that I did not realize where the bags were with items and she raised her voice at me and said they are right there, take both. All the while she was texting on her phone. This is terrible customer service. The front end staff need a lot of training on customer service and no texting while working. I can easily go to Winn Dixie and use self checkout, but I prefer local grocers like Cansecos. With some improvements at the front this store would surely receive 5 stars from me. Ok, I took off a store only because it's a bit pricey but hey, they gotta survive! One of my friends lives nearby and we exercise on Sundays and make Sunday lunch after church. So if we're missing ingredients or anything I usually pop in to grab a salad etc. their prepared foods are friggin amazing! Two words-meat pies! Omfg!! Feel like I'm at Jazz Fest without the crowd and the meat pie tastes better than the crawfish pie even though you want the crawfish pie to taste better, you know what I mean? Plus the staff are super friendly behind the counter. They also have a decent wine selection. Love this neighborhood store! I remember when it was the original Whole Foods back in the day! Honestly I enjoy this little grocery/food GEM! Very good as it relates to getting items that you may not be able to obtain in a Walmart or other chain establishment. You have alcohol at a good affordable price (the options are pretty unique. Your usual bread/protein/endless soda/water options/fruit/etc. What I absolutely adore is their cooked food section. I probably come and get the roast beef and shrimp (surf and turf) like every Tuesday or Wednesday. The food is really good to say this is a grocery store. The staff is always pleasant and ready to assist with whatever needs you may have. Sometimes if an item is out of stock they are even knowledgeable about what other market may carry the brain or something similar to it. Overall you really just cant go wrong! read more

My sister and I have been here many times and usually our experience is just fine. However, we visited yesterday and had a terrible experience. We both checked out separately with different cashiers and purchased about 8 total items. My sister finished before me and had purchased multiple items and a case of water. I went to another cashier, and I purchased some cherries only and then took all of her bags so she could grab the case of water. We left the store and as we're loading the car, the security guard, who was sitting at the door when we left and didn't stop or ask us ANYTHING, rushed out asking us if we stole the water and asking for a receipt. My sister told him she paid but wasn't given a receipt. He argued back and forth with us until one of the other cashiers (a black woman) had to rush out saying we had paid. We left upset because we were in a rush but called back to report the incident and the manager, Jackie, was rude, condescending, and racist and frankly not helpful. We pointed out that if it's the policy to check receipts for non bagged items, receipts should not be optional but automatically given. Also, we said it looks and feels terrible for two young black women to be wrongfully chased down by security and accused of stealing anything, but especially a pack of water they're basically struggling to carry, in a majority white neighborhood/community. She said she would talk to the security only but since he was a black man that the situation was not about race but about him not checking receipts. We pointed out that the cashier who told him that we did not pay was a new white male and that was the problem. There were 3 cashiers up there and we checked out with 2 separate cashiers and had multiple bags so why is the assumption from one cashier that we stole a water ok?! She also said she was from Africa (South African probably given her English accent) and therefore could not be racist. I asked to speak with the owners because we've been loyal customers to all of the Canseco's in the city over many years and have NEVER had an issue like this. Jackie wouldn't give me any information on how to contact them except for "they're here sometimes". My sister and I are honestly deeply disturbed by this experience and will not shop here again and tell every we know to do the same. read more

Get the cuban sandwich which is real with the real cheese the real roasted pork and ham with mustard and pickles on real latin style bread. Hot and cheesy it is a delicacy when done right. Then go to the chips isle and get a bag of fried plantains and you will never want chips again. For dessert get the tres leche cake if they have it, it sells fast. When I forgot to get an ingredient and I am in the middle of cooking, or if I want to get some beer, or wine, or liquor and don't wanna get in the car and drive, I can walk here and get what I need. I am a regular customer at Canseco's on Esplanade and usually am satisfied with their store but on January 30th I called to tell them that a gallon bottle of milk dated January 9th was beginning to spoil. The person who answered the phone told me to bring it in and a manager would be glad to switch it out. When I got there, the assistant manager, Walter, refused to change out the milk because 3/4 of the bottle was gone. Well, of course because it was still good prior to January 30th! He suggested I come back in 1/2 hour and take it up with the manager. This I could not do so, after a heated argument at the front of the store, I left the bottle with him and went across the street to Terranova's where they are always accommodating. I'm sure the distributor would have credited the store and they would have lost nothing but even if that did not happen, I think that is poor customer service. read more

I'm thankful for Canseco's. It's a little market, reminiscent of a bodega, nestled among restaurants and coffee shops on Esplanade. My local friends, my dude, and I stopped by between brunch and the Bacchus parade for snacks and beverages. Everything we were after was easy to find and reasonably priced. The young woman at the register was friendly and efficient. I returned a few days later to pick up some beer as a parting gift for my friends that live a few blocks away. It was a quick trip, as I knew exactly what I was there for. While I was waiting in line, I picked up the most adorable trinket pouch made from a map of New Orleans. It was an easy choice to toss it onto the conveyor belt. The same young woman was working the register from my first trip a few days earlier. An elderly male customer was giving her a hard time over something silly and she didn't back down. By the time it was my turn, she was right back to her pleasant self and we joked how not all customers can be winners. It's this kind of authenticity that makes me adore New Orleans and small businesses like this one. I imagine Canseco's isn't a one-stop-shop for all your necessities, but it served me well during my trip and I'd happily recommend it to anyone else in the area. read more

ONE OF THE BETTER CUBAN PO'BOYS IN TOWN. I say po'boy because it is not a Cuban sandwich because it is not made on Cuban bread. What makes Canseco's stand out from other local attempts is the generous portions of pulled pork, ham and Swiss, as well as a good slathering of yellow mustard and plenty of pickles. With a side of Mac & Cheese and beverage the meal totals just $10.32 after-tax. RANT: PRESSED OVERPOWERING LEIDEHEIMER RUINS A CUBAN! PLEASE USE A VIETNAMESE BAGUETTE INSTEAD! Cuban bread, similar to a Vietnamese baguette, is waxy and chewier than po'boy bread. The texture's velvety pliable unlike a good po'boy loaf that strives for a crispy crust resembling an alligator back. Consequently the key recipe ratios are vastly different. For every cup of flour a Cuban and a Vietnamese baguette have half the sugar of the po'boy and 2-3 times the fat. In fact true Cuban recipes call for lard and not butter. The difference shows up in the grilling process. When Leidenheimer is toasted it has a strong nutty taste that's quite overpowering. Further it becomes dry and practically falls apart when eaten. Conversely, true Cuban bread when pressed stays slick and intact with just a touch of butter flavor. Toasted Leidenheimer is so pungent and crunchy you can't taste the subtleties of the two meats and Swiss, accented by the tartness of the mustard and pickles. But when true Cuban bread is used those ingredients blossom in that soft buttery loaf. BONA FIDES: I lived in Key West 3 years and one of the subjects Conchs are most particular about is how to make Cuban bread and what not to put in the sandwich (tomatoes, onions, lettuce or mayonnaise!) I come in from out of town a couple of times a month to ride my bike around the city to d-stress and clear my head when works gets tough. The location is a great place to park and start my ride. This is a nice clean place with a great selection of whatever you need to enjoy your time in the city plus there is a clean restroom. The people are so nice. Last week I had an emergency confrenece call which included printed forms. Walked in and asked if i could recieve a fax for my meeting....no problem. I love these people and this place. Located right across the street from a park. Wow what else could a person ask for in a food market. Locals are so lucky to have a place like this close by. read more

Several months ago I discovered the Canseco's Italian pasta salad. I love the tang of the dressing combined with the crunch of the veggies perfectly mixed in. I live around the block and look forward to that salad each time I visits Canseco's. I have noticed, however, that they've been making it less and less. I like this place, a little pricey but that's to be expected given the neighborhood it's in. This is more of a general informational post than a review actually, and it really shouldn't count against the place. I thought that it would be a good idea to roll out of bed at around 6pm with a hangover so bad that it would make the Pope renounce God, and then blindly find my way to the store for food. I knew I had to eat or risk this hangover interfering with my plans to drink again that night. My brother was with me, and honestly the blame lays squarely on his shoulders here. He should have been a voice of reason and steered me toward something like chicken soup or beefaroni, but no.... 30 bucks later I was on my way back home, an hour later I was spectacularly ill. The lesson here is that it's actually not a good idea to buy ALL of the prepackaged "sushi" that's left on the rack a half hour before closing and then eat all of it while watching American Pickers and planning an evening of drinking. You will regret it, the cab ride to the bar on the notoriously smooth and well maintained streets of New Orleans will not be your friend. But yeah, Cansecos is really nice though, the staff is always friendly and it's close to City Park so it's a convenient stop to grab snacks if you plan to drink in the park. read more

Cansecos on Esplanade is one more reason to love my neighborhood. The staff is super nice, and for a little corner mini-market, the selection is top notch. The prices are a little high for some stuff, yeah, but if you watch the specials, you can get some stuff cheaper here than in Rouses. It ain't Walmart, dats-fer-shur, but the quality and sophistication here is high, and the staff and the management are tippy top. Plus, they have one of the best lunch specials in Mid-City.
