I spent two weeks at Canterbury House rehabilitating after a hospital stay. The first day was rough. It may have been because my ride was late, but no one met me when I arrived that first night. I really had no idea what to do. They had just shampooed the carpets and the stench was horrendous! My wife brought an air freshener for the room. It wasn't so bad after that and I may have become desensitized, but they need to do something about the smell after cleaning the carpet. It was done in my room a couple of times because of my roommate's incontinence. Next, no one bothered to ask what I might want for dinner. I was brought a big pile of flavorless mac & cheese and mushy peas...I had my wife bring me outside food. For the first three days, I had no choice in what food I had. Finally, someone came in and took my menu preferences for the next week. Overall, my stay was uneven. The OT & PT staff, Ng, Joe, and Josh were excellent. However, they need perhaps one more person to cover when one of them takes a PTO day. That cost me one PT session. They were all extremely personable and listened to my needs but were also encouraging and skilled in their jobs. The non-care staff was also excellent. A special call out to MaKenna and Sabrina. They were both extremely responsive and knew their stuff. Sabrina well beyond her job description to help me on more than one occasion. She was a ball of energy! The skilled nursing staff were good at best, most were pleasant, but their care ranged from good to poor. Most seemed to have reasonable skills, some needed work. Most were responsive, but many were not. Long waits for pain meds were not uncommon. The unskilled care staff has a few standouts such as Peter, but for the most part, this was the weakest point of my experience. Most had English as a second language or at least heavily accented English. Communication was very hard. One of them had no business being there. Fortunately, she seemed to work weekends only. She made it obvious that she literally didn't understand basic human anatomy. Once I got a menu, the food ranged from poor to good. It was all very bland with smaller than expected portions. Vegetables were cooked to death. Fruit was good. Beverage options were poor. Other serious problems I had were related to my being fat. The first bariatric bed was barely wide enough. I was there for almost a week when I had my Care Conference with key staff to assess my progress and plan for my future care. Bob the director, sat in which was not the norm. He offered a wider bed, and I had one the next day. In fact, everything I needed that he offered was handled quickly. If he hadn't chosen to sit in on that meeting my entire stay would have been worse. Why didn't anyone before him offer me a wider bed? It made such a difference. The only sturdy chair without arms was an upholstered chair in the library. They expected that fat patients would use their wheelchair to sit. That is not a comfortable option. And until I was ambulatory enough to get out of the chair on my own, it was no option. If you have a roommate, the rooms are very small so it's hard to move stuff around. Getting a bariatric wheelchair behind the table to eat dinner while watching TV was almost impossible. It sounds like a small thing, but it means a lot when you're stuck in a room for most of the day. There didn't seem to be air conditioning in the room and the window only opened two inches. It was over 80 degrees some of the days I was there. Someone on staff found me a fan which was taken away a few days later as it turned out that it belonged to another patient. I had to have my wife bring a couple fans from home. There were other oddities and annoyances and a few pleasant surprises. Overall, the place was well maintained and clean. If I had to go there again, I would. This is the only care facility I've been to and I'm sure some places are better and some are worse. But I'd know how to navigate this place to better have my needs met early on. read more

I worked at Canterbury House for several years, and unfortunately, I witnessed significant issues within the management team. It was frustrating to see the Executive Director often disengaged, spending much of the day on personal activities like phone games, YouTube, or news browsing, while the nursing staff struggled with high workloads and limited support. Concerns raised by employees about these issues often went ignored, or even worse, were met with punitive responses from regional management. Staff feared suspension or termination for voicing valid concerns, creating a culture of fear rather than support. Additionally, I saw team members who were treated unfairly or even terminated as they were preparing for parental leave--a clear indication of management's lack of empathy toward employee well-being. Pay and benefits are also below average for the industry, which makes retention even harder. That's why the turnover rate is very high. You can see why people are giving 1-star reviews to this place. When they don't care about their employees, how can patients expect to receive quality care? I don't recommend anyone to work here or for patients to come here for rehab services. Canterbury House has some incredible staff members, but it's unfortunate that they aren't given the supportive leadership they deserve. read more

..She quote fell while two cna were transferring her to her bed. she quote fell from her wheelchair.. They called me and said she had a tiny bump on her head.. no mention of the eyes or other bruises.. I'm glad I kept that voicemail and that I went to see for myself read more

It took three days for this place to carry out the doctor's order to remove my father's catheter. And that's the least of their screwups on him. Their admin functions can't even bill Medicare within a 30-day window. This facility is nothing but a pre-morgue where patients are left alone to die. Don't let your loved ones go here. read more

My husband was there and couldn't walk, go to the restroom on his own. The staff and administrator was there for all the way since day one. In less than 27 days, he was able to walk to the restroom on his own. They took such good care of him that he didn't want to go home. They spoiled him. He stayed an extra 7 to 8 days. Beware: if you love your family member look else where... the Social Worker is nasty and really rude. They have no nurses that are willing to call you with an update on your loved one.. you can't call because no one will pick up the phone.. if they do pick up... they just hang up the phone without saying a word.. look elsewhere people, this place is nasty with no communication... nasty sarcastic crew... sad.. but we know how KARMA works!! Foul and disgusting just because they push a missed call button doesn't mean that a nurse or a medical staff is going to come 20 minutes later they come in and get mad at us for taking him to the bathroom ourselves because they just never showed up things like this happen time and time again that my father was in there and kept him so drugged up that he didn't even know the family and he's certainly newest all before he went in there they over medicate and the Cal there is worst ever have since had him in a much much better Skilled Nursing Facility and he has graduated to the Assisted Living and another facility now both have been wonderful never ever put your family member at Canterbury house unless you hate them read more

Oh my goodness. I have a background in elder care and have visited more than my share of rehab facilities. This was just sad. My aunt, who had been staying with my parents for a brief period prior, had an emergency joint replacement surgery. Upon her release from the hospital she was sent here for rehab as my parents were not able to provide the necessary level of care due to their own physical limitations. She was there for a week before Mom succeeded in pressuring them into giving my aunt a shower. Her dietary needs were ignored (no diabetic menu, etc). The last day her insurance would cover, Mom was told she needed to come get my aunt. There wasn't a change in my parents physical abilities and they still couldn't provide the care my aunt needed as she's still heavily dependent to do every day things (shower, walk, prepare meals, etc.) we asked if Medicaid had been considered since there wasn't anyone at home who could provide the needed care. They "assumed" (their word) that she could return to her previous living situation and would have the help she needed. When they couldn't bully us into doing what they wanted, they decided to release her to a homeless shelter. No attempt to follow up on the pending Medicaid application we had filed, no attempt to make other arrangements. I went with my parents to go pick her up and talk to the social worker- oh my word. It was filthy. The front desk wasn't staffed allowing anyone to walk in and wander. The floors were filthy, the carpets stained and smelly, not to mention peeling up in the corners and at the seams presenting numerous trip hazards. The social worker wouldn't talk to us about options, continued care or anything. Just walked my aunt through the process of getting herself signed out. Once all the paperwork was signed, they didn't see any reason to pay any attention toon to us any further. Definitely not somewhere I'll ever be recommending. So disappointing. read more

NIGHTMARE!!! Find somewhere else! Takes an average of 30 minutes to answer each call button. The medication nurse had to be reminded to administer medications. I had to ask the admissions director to get my sister water, or go to the bathroom. And they didn't shower her until I brought it to their attention.... 4 days later. The cna's come down the hall and call out a patients name and wait for them to call back ... rather than know which patients were in what rooms. No consideration is given to dietary needs, and their food sent my sister into a blood sugar high, and without asking, counseling or consulting... they put her on metaforin. Diabetes medication. They also put her on anxiety medications. Crazy. They did have some on the ball for physical therapy, and occupational therapy. The administration office was awful. And the social worker, karen, was the most unprepared, incompetent of them all.... falling short on her own work and blaming everyone for her neglect. Very, Very unfortunate. Luckily we're still alive! This place falls most comfortably with all the places you fear. read more

I would prefer not to give this place a star at all - except that I believe most of the CNA's and the rehab team really cares about their work and the residents. We admitted my mother to this facility in August of 2015. They came recommended by the assisted living community where my mother and father lived (they no longer recommend Canterbury). My mother's health had been declining and she became a high fall risk. So we made the difficult decision to place her at Canterbury as they provide round the clock care and because of its close proximity to my dad where he could easily visit her. We got a positive introduction from the admissions personnel and social worker. That positive assurance was short lived. Mom was admitted to the rehab wing initially. That went well for the first few months, although locating and talking with a nurse at anytime became a major challenge. They are not easy to locate and don't follow up when you leave a message. However, the CNA's worked their tails off. Over the next few months, we had several family care conferences regarding my mothers condition, including our concern about her feet (my mother was diabetic), her weight loss and difficulty eating because her dentures no longer fit. They rarely followed up with any of our requests to have doctors and dentists help with these areas and often did so only after repeated reminder phone calls. By early November, they notified us they would be moving mom to the long term care wing due to her declining condition, we knew that would eventually be the case but didn't know until after the fact that we could have elected to leave her where she was. We soon discovered that is where they move residents to be ignored until they die. My mother, like many, was neglected once was she was there and frequently begged us to take her out of there. She often sat in soiled clothes after pushing her button for help and waiting for long periods of time for someone to arrive. (I tested this myself while there and waited for 30 minutes). We routinely expressed our concerns that my mom appeared to be losing weight due to her dentures not fitting so it was hard to eat, the foot doctor had not seen her at all despite being assured they would schedule that appointment, the staff doctor had seen her maybe once. Every time one of my family members visited, we had to find a CNA or somebody to help change her or bring back her night stand so she could keep her water nearby and other personal items within reach. Her kidneys were failing and she needed to drink water throughout the day to help them function. We could never get an answer as to why they kept removing her table and water. I'm guessing they have a shortage of adequate patient supplies as well as staff. On one visit, my sister found my mom with her head down on the dining room table, sleeping because they neglected to wheel her back to her room after lunch. Plus the room she was in was dark all the time and the drapes always drawn because her roommate slept all day. We asked if mom could move to a room where there was more light. They said no because there were no other Medicaid beds available. On Dec. 4, the social worker called us to say they were concerned about moms condition as she was now down to 80 pounds. By law, these nursing facilities are required to notify a family member anytime a resident loses 3 pounds or more in one week. When they moved my mother to this long term care wing on Nov. 7, she weighed 93 pounds. She lost 13 pounds in one month. No notification before this phone call. On Dec. 5, around 7:00 pm, I got a phone call from a CNA at Canterbury that they found my mom slumped over in her chair, her face, lips and hands were blue and she was foaming at the mouth and non-responsive. She was taken to the hospital and diagnosed with pneumonia, fever of 104, sepsis and severe dehydration. She was so rigid they could hardly move her. They treated her with fluids and antibiotics and she responded favorably, but died 2 weeks later. I made numerous phone calls to Canterbury the night my mom was taken to the hospital as well as the next day, to get additional information about my mom prior to them finding her. I never got a returned phone call from anybody. My mother was ill, we knew her health was declining and that eventually we would arrange for hospice. But we didn't expect the place we entrusted to help us care for her to be so neglectful and so uncaring. I would have hoped my mom's last few months would have been better than what she experienced here. I would NEVER recommend Canterbury, particularly the long term care side, to anyone needing to place an ill or elderly family member. read more

Cleanest and nicest facility in the area. I felt very welcome when I took a tour here for the first time.

My Brother was in there six months. Please do not let you loved ones go into this place. If they don't like you? They will sedate you like you see in the movies.My brother was always always sedated and they told me it was because of missing a kidney dialysis.My brother is allergic to shell fish and the last night he was there until we found a more suitable place for him. The served him SHRIMP!. He has been there for Six months and they should know what he can eat. They moved him across of the nurses station because they said he falls all the time with his door open so he can't sleep. I don't that's true why they did that. I think they did that to punish him he said because he spoke his mind. When he went in there he was recovering after losing his leg. With in the first two weeks he had huge burns over 60% of his body. They did no know why. They told me because it wan one of his medications.They stopped giving him that medication and he was still getting these big burns that was open. Doctor's did not know why. He said it was something in that place like the filthy bed bugs, air, water or the laundry detergent even. He went in there weighing 250 pounds and came out at 190. He lost 60 pounds from being in there and no will to live after getting these burns. He could not walk with his new leg and before the burns he started walking.Also the day he left he was promised a wheel chair and they said it was on its way.The lady was out side with us saying it's on it's way. That was a a lie because I read the emails why it never showed up because they never submitted correct paper work.She sat there saying its on its way and be patient while she knew it was not coming. Also he had several Hundreds Of Dollars of item's missing from his room that they said it got lost in the laundry room. While he is out of the room they come in and take stuff he said.They also said he had a surgery that needed done. That was also not true. He went there and he never had one scheduled. Everything that is on here I can prove 100%! Please if you love your family. Find another place.He is doing 100% better out of there and his wounds are healing. There are no for sure reason why these burns happened.Yelp contacted me to make sure this is true and accurate. Looking at all the reviews on here there are a lot of the same things going on in this place. Thank God he is out of there living at home and on the road to recovery. read more

I'd post zero stars if that was an option! Horrible place! My mother was placed there and went down hill from day one. The nursing staff is rude and won't listen to concerns you have for your loved ones. We kept telling them that something was wrong with our mother and all they kept saying was "she's tired". Once we insisted on labs being taken it was discovered she had a critically high level of calcium and needed to go to the hospital STAT! Needless to say, we did not bring her back once released from the hospital. To show how much they care, they never even called to ask when our mother was coming back! I wouldn't let them take care of my dog let alone my mother. read more

BEWARE this place is somewhere you take someone you don't love. almost all the nurses are complete rude a holes that don't care about the residents they would rather watch a resident fall and get hurt while calling for the busy cna working. (as in they rather yell for a cna to help a resident then help the resident from maybe breaking a bone or worse) the nurses don't pass pills at the right time and run the CNAs like they are animals. it's disgusting. MOST of the CNAs are wonderful and do a great job at taking care of their residents... but they are also way over worked and understaffed. I've seen CNAs almost in tears or sweating horribly because they are running from room to room with no help. the CNAs cant do their job properly because of being under staffed and because the nurses are constantly on their heels. my gma was there and while i was observing i realized this isnt somewhere you take someone you love. not many of the nurses care to take the time with the residents and expect too much out of the CNAs. so please think twice before going here. a concerned grand daughter read more
