I served time here after having leg surgery. While some of the staff are incredible, other are lazy, could care less that your call light is on and make it a routine practice of running up and down the halls screaming in the middle of the night. The night shift nurses can't / won't correct them because most of them disappear every half hour to go outside and smoke. Some of the nurses from Nigeria and Cameroon don't speak clearly enough to be working with patients. Oh, you will get the dog and pony show when you go to check the place out but it's never like that. Patient are left in front of the nurses station for hours with nothing to do. The 24 open door policy is a laugh - you have to ring a bell and get buzzed in which can take a while. If you are on one of the good floors with a private room then you won't have to beg for a shower. The top floors are the nicest but that's all out of pocket living. The food is universal across all of the UPMC facilities; this place serves the same boring menu every two weeks. You can get alternates like a hamburger or wings but be prepared for ATTITUDE. If you are eating in your room you may or may not get a replacement meal. The place can be loud even with locked units. Some nurses have true attitude and talk to you like you are five year old. Well, that is if they can get off their cell phones or stop text messaging long enough.It is a shame that the older residents are treated like crap. No sooner do they get done with dinner are nurses and aides getting them ready for bed. Is it any wonder why they are up and screaming at three in the morning. At first glace the place seems nice but if you need to stay more than a week, prepare yourself to get shuffled from room to room. Because of their complete incompetence I lost a huge chun of 2016 while they screwed around milking my insurance company. read more

What most people say about Canterbury is true. There are good things and bad things. To start with the bad things -- There are long long waits to get an aide which is very distressing to the person who doesn't want to go to the bathroom in their pants. They also forget people are on the pot or the bedpan. The aides get annoyed if you seem annoyed with them. They put people who need to be watched in a semi-circle in front of the nurses' desk. This is on the first floor skilled nursing section. Many have dementia and apparently don't belong on that floor but the staff says the families refuse to allow them to go to the appropriate unit. These poor people sit there and some of them call out repeatedly for something but are completely ignored, some make odd noises, some talk to themselves, they rock and make odd movements of their feet, hands and arms. Seems there is no activity room to put them in with an aide in charge to watch over them. But can't they renovate a couple of rooms into a space for them? There is a very very large room at one end of the hall and there is a ton of room in there for these patients who are in front of the nurses now and an aide can look after them in that room. Why isn't this space used? Some are in severe emotional distress but nothing seems to be done to help them. The nurses and aides will say they tried but then they just give up. There's noise during the night as some patients continue to call out for friends or relatives or aides for help. The frustrating thing is, the aides will say nothing can be done. So SAD!!!! It seems to me that some reorganization is needed. And maybe they need to spring for higher salaries to get good people who will stay!! So lets look at PT. Again what reviewers say is true. They have good PT and OT therapists but you can see they only have very limited time and it seems like limited interest in helping a patient progress further. At a certain point they declare the patient is not able to improve and then they have to check out and go home based on that declaration. I've seen other nursing homes where PT is very very willing to keep on helping a patient back to their best possible condition and will keep on trying. Maybe success is slow but it is success. So if this is rehab, I think they should change their attitude and try to give more instead of forcing a hasty exit. What's the point of sending a patient home before they are ready and then getting them right back again after they fall? Canterbury has a large garden outside with a large trellis for shade. It is a good place to take your loved one for a stroll in a wheelchair or with a walker, drink some ice water, eat a snack at a table, and look at the lovely landscaping and flowers. This is a huge plus. The lovely sunroom next to it is also ideal. They have many fun activities geared for the elderly in the dining room, and occasional things to do in that very large communal gathering room I mentioned. It has a piano. They have special services like beauty salon, hearing, vision, etc. and a podiatrist that once in a great while shows up but is always booked. Beauty service is also always booked. Their administrative staff is warm and friendly. I would like to see them do a serious makeover of their aides situation, their too-fast PT situation, and their location of the dementia/must-be-watched patients into the communal room with an aide to talk to them, ask them questions, and do whatever is needed to help them be their best selves. I also think they need to pay their help more instead of paying too little and griping when they leave for a job with more pay. Why wouldn't they? Thank you for reading. read more

The fact there hasn't been a reality TV show set in a retirement home is a crime. I visit my grandma because I love her, but the stories I get in return are an amazing bonus. Canterbury is a great place for a loved one. The place is clean, staff friendly and the apartments/rooms a very nice size. I don't think it's anyone's dream to live in a retirement home, but I'm glad my grandma has a comfortable place to call home, and an endless amount of gossip. read more

My mother stayed here for several months. No nursing home is ideal, however, the staff were very compassionate towards us. That was until we asked to dine up on the 6th floor where the private residents are. We wouldn't have gone up there, but the staff recommended it to us. I will say, I have personal problems, and maybe I am off putting to people, but I was not loud or rude, and all we did was eat lunch. when we left, the other residents made snide remarks about me, and we were told never to go up there again. A foul odor was always present as well. Along with the usual restrictions of being in a nursing facility, this was almost the most cruel experience I have ever had. I had double bypass surgery on the 27th of February. Brought here to this rehabilitation center. Most of the nurses here, has no compassion. The physical therapy personnel love playing semantics. They'll also come in your room and go through your things. I told her I left the breathing machine at Shadyside Hospital. She taken it upon herself to come to my room, and go through my property looking for it. Deep place. Felt like I was a prisoner. More than a patient! Moreover, expect for this facility, to push you out, when you're nowhere close to recovery. You've been warned. read more

My 89 year old Dad was one of the first patients to stay in the newly opened cardiac wing of this facility. His room was clean, spacious and well equipped. Doctors, nurses, aides, and physical therapists were attentive, knowledgeable, and compassionate. Doctors changed and regulated his medicines until they found the right fit for his needs. He is thriving as we look forward to his 90th birthday. Having a chapel in the building is a plus. The only negative is the small parking garage. I planned my visits around the shift change or moved my car if I parked on the street. Canterbury place was an incredible Rehabilitation facility for my Dad. read more

My mother was a resident at Canterbury Place on Fiske Street in Pittsburgh from the end of March through May 31, 2017. During that time, my sister and I witnessed many disturbing incidents that took place at the facility. My sister and I are both from out of town, so we were staying in my mother's apartment and were at the facility with mom for eight hours a day and for weeks at a time. On June 1, we moved my mother to O'Neill Nursing Home in North Ridgeville, Ohio. My mother passed on July 15. I waited to write this review so to have a basis of comparison from one facility to another. While at Canterbury, we heard two aides talking: "...these people are so lazy that they would rather shit their beds and have us clean it up." My opinion on this statement is that if the aides would have come to the aid of the resident in a reasonable time when residents pulled the call button, many these situations could may have been avoided. We regularly timed the response time from when my mother called for an aide and when they showed up - 15 to 30 minutes was the norm. Most times, my sister and I helped our mother to the porta-potty. I know that when older people have to go, they have to go. Most mornings when we arrived, urine had been sitting in the porta-potty and remained there for several more hours until we asked to have it removed. Most times, I got sick of it being there and emptied it myself. Mom was left by herself on the porta-potty for long periods of time as the call bell was on the other side of the bed and the aides just left here and went on with their business. Mom had an advanced colon cancer and was in need of pain pill boosters between the morphine. When the pain broke through and she rang for assistance, it would take an aide 15 - 30 minutes to get there and then the aide would go tell the nurse of her need for medication. That would add another 15 plus minutes until mom got a pain pill from the nurse. Mom's primary nurse, Shannon, was miserable. Everything seemed to be an interruption of her time. Because of limited parking in the building, visitors and employees have to resort to parking on the street. Street parking requires one to move their car every hour to avoid getting a ticket. I had to resort to street parking several times and managed not to get a ticket. When Shannon (the nurse) had to park on the street she would storm out every hour and tell everybody what a pain it was and the she already got one ticket. We witnessed Shannon inadvertently spilling a glass of water, some of which ended up on my mom. Shannon's response was one of anger and she voiced that she would be glad to go home and get away from these people. We went into mom's room on a Sunday evening after being gone for a few days and it smelled horrible. We located the smell and asked to have the garbage removed. They said that they were short staffed over the weekend and they would get to it. I noticed that there was a peanut and a straw wrapper on the floor behind the door in the bathroom. I purposely left the items behind the door to see how long it would take before someone would notice when they were cleaning the bathroom. That peanut and straw wrapper stayed behind the door for My mother got a sore at the bottom of her spine and hospice recommended an air mattress. For some reason, the mattress kept deflating. My mom was quite uncomfortable with her bottom resting between the mostly deflated mattress rolls. Nurse Shannon said that mom had been messing with the controls and that she was tired of re-inflating the mattress. She would do it later. In the morning the air mattress was in the same condition. At that point, mom was very lucid and said that she didn't touch the controls. Perhaps there was a problem with that mattress, but that never dawned on Nurse Shannon. Residents, including my mother, were not happy there and told anyone walking by who would listen. It was disheartening to see the residents being wheeled to sit in front of the nurses' station for hours. I did talk to the nurse in charge, the head of nursing, and the social worker at the facility and all that they had were excuses. Aides were hard to hire - most came from fast food restaurants just looking for more money and didn't stay very long, etc. It's a hard job. On June 1, 2017, we moved mom to O'Neill Nursing Home just outside of Cleveland. The facility was wonderful - bright and clean. When my mom rang for an aide, you no sooner turned around and one was there. The aides took her to the bathroom, waited until she was done, and then got her settled back in bed. When she rang for assistance and it was close to her medication time, the nurse came with the pills in anticipation of her request. Residents were happy and smiling. There was never a group of residents just sitting in front of a nurses' station. We are very glad that my mom spent her remaining month and a half at peacefully at O'Neill's. read more
