So far I like Canton Tea Gardens. I had some sweet and sour chicken from the place and it had good flavor. We got some of the green beans as well, and those were really good. I shared them with the baby and she was a fan as well--oddly, she especially seemed to like the onion that they're stir fried with. The BBQ pork fried rice is pretty good as well, but if you call to order it they say they don't have that, just "regular pork fried rice". It actually makes me wonder if I'm ordering with the restaurant directly or if when I call it's routing to some third-party service, but at any rate they give me the rice I ordered. Moo shoo has also been a hit, and the kiddo seems to like it pretty well too. Service has been friendly, and they take ApplePay. There's not much parking here, and it's all street. But it also seems to be mostly a takeout place; when I've gone in I've encountered more folks picking up than eating in. I can't say I won't continue to explore nearby Chinese restaurants but this one is what I'd consider home base. read more

Large, clean place with very friendly people and good prices. The first place I've ever seen with both Mei fun and chow fun on the menu, that's a good sign. Tea was served at each table, signaling a very traditional restaurant. I had the Singapore Mei Fun. There was a lot of meat. I got a whiff of curry but it's so spicy you can't taste it. Thumbs up. She went with Chicken Kow, which is moo goo gai pan without the moo or something like that. She liked it. Since that first visit we ordered delivery from them and the food was just as good at home. Contacted American Express and they recommended filling a complaint on the Better Business Bureau. Also the service is lousy. Food is not impressive. We used to love all the food we would get from this restaurant. They must of changed hands as the last two times we have gone here, it has not been good. House chop suey. Mostly bean sprouts, lacked flavor and watery. It didn't even look good Chicken soup. Broth had zero flavor. Egg foo young, used to be our favorite. Totally changed and again lacked flavor. This place has been in this location forever. It's always been busy, but on my last visit I couldn't help but think it was just 2 people running it. A very courteous young woman did everything up front, and you got the sense there was just one cook in the kitchen because most everyone I was with including me was waiting about an hour for their food. Egg rolls- too much of whatever spice is typically in it. Cinnamon? Five spice? One bite, both went in the garbage. Hong su chicken- zero flavor. None. Another couple bites and I tossed it. So I'm one of the customers like some of the others that have to question -what happened to the food? There are some inconsistencies where as sometimes the food is still good, and sometimes not so much. The eggrolls are still okay, but I find that sometimes the sauces/gravies are bland and flavorless. Some cons to mention: Bland fried rice. If I was blindfolded, I couldn't tell you which meat flavored fried rice I was served. Months ago I ordered Sweet and Sour Chicken, and it didn't taste like the typical Sweet and Sour syrup you would get anywhere else. It tasted like it was swimming in very watered down pineapple juice. 2x times I've ordered Beef and Cashew Nut, and the gravy tasted like Sauerkraut. And - it tasted like the beef in it was half fresh and half old recooked and overcooked tough beef mixed in. I also recently received 3 large orders of Steamed White RIce with multiple entrees that were all literally under cooked like uncooked rice. All of the above were on takeout orders. I surely hope they read this and correct the issues. Problems are happening all the time now. If it continues, we'll just start giving our money to a different place. Worst experience ever. Only one waitress and she has a line of 6 to 7 people waiting on take out orders....weird loud phone ringing and speaker announcing. ORdered two soups, one brought out and cold, Other soup came much later with food. No service during meal...later went up to pay...after waiting almost 2 hours...waitress upcharged and did not show itemized bill. The restaurant is in need of a renovation. Carpet needs to be replaced along with booths, tables, and chairs. Staff is unintentionally impolite, somewhat comical really if you've got a good sense of humor. I called in my order and it was ready accurately and in 10 minutes. Chicken and broccoli comes in a white sauce with other vegetables like mushrooms and carrots, etc. I wished it was just chicken and broccoli. It was good despite the looks and it wasn't overly salty. The chicken fried rice was okay too. Nothing to write home about but I'm glad it was actually fried rice and not yellow rice, peas and carrots, and pieces of white chicken that some places try to pass for fried rice. We ordered 3 vegetable egg roll, small cashew chicken & general Tso's chicken. The general Tso's chicken had 3 narrow strips about 1/2" in length of carrot, 2 pieces celery, 1 piece onion, a a narrow 1" pice of green pepper. Very disappointing! We paid $2.00 extra to have them add green onions. The person who called me back had ZERO customer service skills. Her response was this is how we make it. I told her it used to have round carrot discs, more onions & peppers. The conversation was a waste of my time as she was not listening to me. My husband & I have been ordering from there since the 90's. We will no longer patronize them. read more

There used to be two Chinese restaurants within wonton-throwing distance here on Devon, of which this one was the the lesser. However, that other place closed a few years ago, so I guess Canton Tea Gardens won! The food here is fine. They have a large selection of entrees on the lunch combination list. pulled up Canton Tea Garden on Google and went to their "website" which takes you to "onlineorderhub.com" - we ordered fried rice and egg rolls for delivery. the delivery came to our house and we received 2 egg foo young plates. We thought we were on their site. even the web address on this Yelp page is not correct. When I called to get our order fixed and get what we paid for - I was told I need to take it up with whomever I ordered through. Which we believed was the restaurant. The Manager then hung up the call after saying they can't locate our "ticket". I like their food, but do not order delivery from them as they outsource it to someone else. you have no recourse if it is wrong. read more

New owners have made this place from a place that was barely passible to a place I want to explore their menu more. I am really impressed with the flavors, execution and quality of ingredients. The eggrolls have just enough peanut butter to compare them to some of the long lost NW Chicago places like Tony's Peking Garden and Tony's Hong Kong Inn. The place is super clean compared to it's previous owners and it has a very vibrant authentic Chinese feel with the hanging lanterns and decorations. They have redone and cleaned so much of the place that I hope they will start to draw a crowd to enjoy a 1950's vibe of an old school Chinese establishment. Thank you for being open and giving us folks in Edison Park a place to get Chinese food. Tonight at about 7:45 pm we ordered and were told it would be ready in 15 min. By the time I got there, I was the only one there, and entered to see my order ready to pick up. They have a big clear plexiglass blocking the cashier. The woman was great to pick to pick up a call and put them on hold to allow me to quickly check out. On my way out, someone was walking up without a mask, but then I headed home and ate a good dinner at home that was hot and filling. Good crab Rangoon and tasty General tso-with a lighter sauce and not really something I would get again, but it was tasty white meat. The Mongolian beef was good as well. The Terriyaki beef skewers were something we will be ordering again. All in all, a good meal and I felt that this place should allow people to order without any issues of wait times. Who knows if this is a two person business now, but if they keep this service up for folks with larger orders, I would try another one of their full meal deals- there were some I had no idea what it was, but I imagine if I look through previous reviews, I might find something else to try. read more

T e r r i b l e way to waste $18 dollars. A few days back, at 3:15 am I woke up out of a deep sleep and could not return to it. The feeling was like rocks in my stomach. I felt crappy and was out of digestive enzymes. Ugh! By 5:10 am I realized I wouldn't get back the sleep lost and might as well get up. That was sleep I genuinely needed; especially after working a portion of the day in the frigid minus temps of Chiberia 2019. I'm making a declaration now. This is the last FF Chinese American meal / combo / special, that I will ever order. Restaurants that (truly) make specials fresh from scratch, at the time of order, are rare. Recently, I had just completed a modified Whole30 so there's that. Whole30 limits you to eating fresh, mostly organic produce and meats. No beans, rice, bread, sugars or processed crap. It's a little hardcore but a good reboot for the system. After the 30 days are over, you slowly introduce all foods back to see how they affect you and then can branch out. But, food will affect you differently than previously. And you should note the differences. It's like taking the ultimate allergy test. The draw to try Canton Garden that day, were the reviews & too lazy to cook. "great quality", "everything fresh & crisp", "well prepared". But, this meal was not fresh in any regard. Based on reviews I thought everything would be made at the point of ordering. For folks that write any of the following: "my family has been coming here for.." Or, "we have dined here for over __insert number of years." Or, " this is my go-to for... " Y'all need to tell us exactly what you came for. Are you ordering a la carte or lunch/dinner specials? I was suspect when they quoted a ten minute window for pickup. I ordered a General Tso's dinner special which comes with BBQ pork fried rice, an egg roll and two "chicken nuggets." On previous menus a dinner special came with soup. This has changed. I ordered a small hot and sour soup which carried a charge of some $2.75. I requested that both the entree and rice be prepared extra spicy. She said the entrée is spicy but yes, both could be made "extra spicy" as requested. I got there before the ten minutes was up and you know what? The food was ready, packed and waiting at the hosts desk. Strange, no? The food: The soup was like a goupy Chef Boyardee can. Bad & salty. The "nuggets" are merely the same fried chicken pieces used in any of their sweet & sour or General Tso's entrées. Which were not prepared fresh. The meat was hard. The egg roll was mushy. The contents had lost its color and was saturated in oil. The entrée was mush as well. Good General Tso's should be crispy fried and then topped with sauce. This was mushy and worthless. The fried rice had already taken the shape of the styrofoam container which makes me think it was prepacked. Freshly prepared rice will not do that. (Fast food Chinese restaurants will prepare large vats of rice in advance to speed up their serving time. What can lend the impression that it's "fresh" is how much water they used when steaming it back to life. In some cases they'll perform a "faux steam" by pouring hot water over the rice and microwaving it.) With every spoonful, it felt heavy. This is indicative of old product. Freshly prepared rice is just that. It has a lightness to it. Your fork should have no struggle as it scoops up a heaping. In the taste and how the body digests it, one can tell what is fresh and what is old. A few bites in and I felt sluggish. Earlier I mentioned doing Whole30. That's a diet rich in fresh produce and meats. No processed anything. Your body is trained to eat fresh and this was anything but. I also mentioned requesting and confirming that they would prepare it extra spicy. This was not so. Either they didn't do it or their spices have expired. I can give a little leeway because this is Cantonese food and in no way close to the spice levels attained at say; Sichuan or Mandarin. Cantonese is known for being soupy, salty and having lots of brown gravies. There was a time this restaurant was at their zenith. It is long past expiration now. I'd say they were at prime about 12-15 years ago. Another reviewer mentioned that she felt sorry for the fish that look bored in their fish tank. Looks like a goldfish koi & some other cheap fishy. They are huge. There was a time when this restaurant had enormous Asian arowana fish in their tank. Arowana were believed to bring good luck & keeping them was a status symbol. Wealthy people in China often kept them. In the US however, it's on endangered species lists, depending on the variety. Arowanas are known to grow up to 3' feet in length and require enormous tanks to swim. They' are aggressive fish which dine on live prey & to some, resemble dragons of the sea. Back in the day, Canton kept one and proudly displayed it. At that time, business was constant. Today, the restaurant looks dated and dismal.
