This should be a 5-star review. But it's not, because of a critical inaccuracy when booking the 3-hour Monument Valley tour. I'll discuss that first because until the company fixes this issue, it will lead to the same problem for other as we experienced. Here's the problem: when you book the tour, it tells you to meet the tour guide in the lobby of The View Hotel. On the website before booking, it says "Please meet your guide in the lobby of the View Hotel next to the bronze statue of a cowboy riding a horse." In the email confirmation, it says "Your tour guide will pick you up at the beautiful View Hotel lobby!" Pretty clear, right? We're supposed to meet the tour guide in the lobby. No ambiguity here. We arrived in the lobby a full 15 minutes ahead of our 9:00am pickup - we were warned that the tour would leave precisely on time. 9:00 came and went with no sign of the tour guide or his vehicle. I call the office and get voicemail, but don't leave a message. A minute later I get a text message from their bot inviting me to start a conversation. I explain the problem, and get another automatically-generated response: "Thanks for letting me know! I'll check with our team and get back to you shortly." Over the next 10 minutes I send a couple more clarification messages, and receive no response at all. So we're starting to fret. We have a flight to catch later in the day, so if we miss this tour we won't have an opportunity to rebook. Then after a few minutes, a tour guide from a _different_ company comes in, sees us, and says that the meeting point for tours is outside. We walk out of the hotel lobby, and don't see anything at all, because the tour pickup point is across the parking lot and down a hill, completely out of view from the hotel entrance. We walk down, arriving 10 minutes after the "prompt" departure time, and join our tour. We could have completely missed our tour because of the company's inability to maintain an accurate website. But we lucked out today. The company never called or texted back to provide us with updated instructions about where to meet, and the tour guide didn't attempt to find us either. We are grateful to the guide from the different company who made sure we got on the tour. So, this could easily be a 2-star or worse review for this experience. But the fact of the matter is that the tour was really great once we got started. Our guide was knowledgeable, friendly, and entertaining. He gave us recommendations about where to take pictures and took a couple creative ones for us. He shared Navajo history, mythology, and his own personal experiences growing up in the Navajo nation. We saw some beautiful scenery which left us wanting more. read more

We did the sunrise tour and our guide was Bobby. This gentlemen was incredible; he knew the exact time we needed to be at the sites we told him we wanted to see at sunrise; and he did just that. The journey to Hunts Mesa is something well beyond what you may have imagined. Our guide TY was a professional and competent driver. We plowed through wheel deep sand, scaled shear rock faces, climbed up unbelievably gnarly rocks, rode around precipitous bends, went down a sand dune (per Ty it is not really possible to go up) and wound up at one the world's great vantage points over Monument Valley. Ty is a local Navajo young man extremely well versed in his ancestry and culture. His stories and references to growing up in the immediate Kayenta area added immeasurably to our trip. We reached the top prior to sunset and were left there until sunset while Ty went to our campsite to set the tents and get dinner going. The campsite is located about 25 yards from the "classic" sunrise photo location. Dinner was steak, corn on the cob and baked potato cooked to perfection over open camp fire. The tents were like new and featured an inflated mattress. We had classic light for our sunset shoot and marginal, overcast light for the morning shoot. My post processing of both sunset and sunrise images resulted in once of a lifetime images that I will treasure forever. My thanks to Ty for his professionalism and courtesy. read more

Opting to start our day with the 3.5 hour tour, which included the back country area that is only accessible with a Navajo guide, was the perfect beginning to our time in Monument Valley. Our guide was very knowledgeable, offered to take pics of us, gave us pointers on best angles to catch the image, and provided lots of great info about the Navajo tribe and Monument Valley. I'm glad we choose this experience to get a feel for the park before driving the Valley loop on our own later in the day. Bobby our tour guide was awesome. Told us about Navajo history, culture, and tribal background. Went into the code talker history and how that came about. While we were gathered at a large cave like setting with a huge hole in the top he played the flute to show the acoustic being in that monument. It was a memberable experience that we won't forget. My Wife and I booked the private sunset tour with Monument Valley Safari on 10/03/24. Let me say that it was nothing short of amazing. Our tour guide, Don Mose, was incredible. In addition to showing us the very best sights, he taught us some Navajo words, told Navajo stories, explained the meanings of the Petroglyphs that we saw and gave a full history of Monument Valley as well as the Navajo people in general. The tour was visually stunning while also culturally deepening. Don took us to some places where the regular tours don't go and even helped us adjust our camera settings for maximum image capture. While visitors can drive the main valley loop on their own, with general admission to the reservation, it really pays to have a local Navajo guide take you further into tribal land and explain the history and geology of the area. Monument Valley Safari did a great job, with guide Duffy taking us on a sunset tour that included the Mittens, John Ford's Point, the Three Sisters, Totem Pole and Yei Bi Chei spires, and the Big Hogan, Ear of the Wind, and Sun's Eye arches. A beautiful morning spent with Don Mose, driving through Monument Valley, understanding this place through his eyes, tracing back his knowledge through the understanding of his grandfather who in turn held the knowledge and wisdom of his grandparents. Don Mose has amazing stories to tell about the origin of the Navajo people. He is a special person who has done much for the language of the Dine and been an important teacher and counselor to young people. He's travelled far and wide helping people to reacquaint themselves with their native tongue. I did a private tour and the one on one time was really precious and the highlight of my one month road trip. The three or so hours flew by. Highly highly recommend. What an amazing experience! Highly recommend! From start to finish this tour was so easy at pickup at the hotel to getting dropped off back at the hotel. Bobby, our guide, was so kind and knowledgeable. It was great to be able to go to places that the ordinary driver couldn't go. Bobby gave some great insight into the area and was super kind in taking photos as I was a solo traveler. I took the 3.5 hour tour and would suggest not to do any less. We opted to tour Monument Valley with a guide- they are limiting how many cars can go into the park with Covid. If you try to go on your own- you could be facing long waits or flat out- no entry! Besides the perk of knowing you're in- you get back access to the park- through private property of some of the families living inside the park. The arches are all off the main tourist loop! In fact- my absolute favorite part of the tour was in Big Hogon- a large sandstone room with a weathered hole in the top- aka- an arch. They streaks of color and shading when entering look like an Indian from the movie Last of the Mohicans, but once I laid down against the sloping sandstone, under the arch- the shadows made it look like an eagle head with the opening the eye. Tony- our amazing guide- sat down next to me (socially distanced) and pulled out a drum and sang for us. Again- my favorite part of the tour! I could easily imagine a pow-wow being held in this space. Tony made sure to explain the names of the different Mesas, Buttes and Spirals throughout the tour/park & pointed out features we might have overlooked. We even got to see bobcat tracks! He also made sure to point out all the movies hot spots throughout. At the point- you can even rent a seat on a horse for the classic John Wayne pose, directed by John Ford. Normally- I wander around parks, snapping photos and sitting down to enjoy the nature. I tried my best to restrain from wandering away from the tour- which was funny, because the other couple touring with us kept wandering away! I highly recommend going with this company!!! Our guide, Toney Begay, provided cultural education and entertaining commentary. Toney described differences between authentic ancient and more recent fake stone markings. This was the best tour I have taken in a while! I usually shy away from them, and stick to the heavily trafficked areas. I ended up being the only person on the tour, but it didn't feel that way. I cannot say enough about Tony and his knowledge of the park area. He gave me the 5 star experience. I would have not gotten the same rich experiments driving by myself. I learned so much about the formations and the thought that went into them. My favorite monument was the three sisters. Overall the best part of my tour was Tony's singing of a few songs. I enjoyed each one, and could feel the history behind them. I enjoyed the very short hike to different view point as well. I definitely felt the peace and serenity the valley portrays. I felt so happy to learn more about Navajo culture. Did I mention that Tony took the best photos and directed me to the best spots. Lol he had tips and tricks to getting the best photos. If you want a intimate experience in monument valley, take this tour company! I will definitely be back to take night tour. Tony mentioned the valley is lite at night. I'm a moron, so I don't know how to spell our guide's name. I had trouble saying it too. But she was fantastic. And so was the tour. My wife, 15 year old, and I, took the 9am version of the 3 1/2 hour tour, and it is one of the coolest things we've ever done. She took us to areas that are otherwise off-limits, such as Anasazi ruins, petroglyphs, and a hogan demonstration run by a family. The rock formations are spectacular, and the landscapes, as you're taken deeper up(?) the valley, become more intimate. She stopped a lot so that we could explore and take pics. We usually get antsy on guided tours. But not on this one. It seemed just the right amount of time. I recommend this company. read more

Bob our tour guide was very friendly, knowledgeable and entertaining. He told us a lot about his culture and his personal life. We made several stops for photo opportunities. He also gave us assistance for taking photos at the best location for each stop. He also gave us pointers on how to better frame and take our pictures. Monument Valley is an incredibly beautiful sight from highway 163. But to be in the valley itself in an open air vehicle, hearing stories about the ancient and recent history of the place, staring at the sky through arches, viewing the sea of purple flowers, hearing beautiful music in a natural amphitheater, watching my grandchildren roll down a sand dune, ending our visit with an awe-inspiring sunset--it was sublime. It exceeded our hopes and expectations. Beyond that: our daughter's cell phone got away from her, without her noticing, at some point on the trip. Our guide, Ty, went back over the area where she thought it had fallen, but we did not find it. The next day, Ty returned there--and found it! Thank you, Ty, for a memorable trip full of beauty, and for miraculously finding a lost cell phone in Monument Valley! read more

Our visit to Monument Valley over the Thanksgiving holiday with our guide Don was an incredible and eye-opening experience for our whole family. He took the time to speak very thoughtfully about his experiences, plus the history of the Navajo, and he made everything especially interesting for our young kids. Don told us a lot about each site we visited. And getting to meet Loretta inside a hogan to see her spin yarn and style my daughter's hair was really amazing. Overall, this was the best part of our entire trip. We had an amazing time last Sunday 2/19 with Toney as our guide for a 2.5 hour tour of Monument Valley. We originally thought that this tour was just going to be us going through the valley and seeing the different monuments, but Toney exceeded our expectations by going above and beyond to help us capture amazing (AMAZING) photos. He is clearly very passionate about photography and about the beauty of the valley. He was extremely knowledgeable and friendly, and made the experience unforgettable. At the end of our 2.5 hours, Toney asked us if we'd like to see a bit more of the valley up close and we happily agreed. He really took his time and showed his passion, experience, and talent. We enjoyed the most amazing sunset tour. We were running late due to construction and my inability to read that Navajo time is not Arizona time. We called to let them know. Shay was understanding and let us know not to worry. We arrived at The View Hotel about 10 min late. Ran in to potty then down to the meeting place... they were gone. Oops. No worries a wonderful woman who realized our dilemma shuttled us to the first stop where we met up with our group. Now for the important stuff! Toney, our guide, was phenomenal. He took time to explain and share stories. He played a drum and sang songs. There were other guide services that we'd run into. I didn't see any other guides do this. Toneys energy for telling stories ( you know he's told three or more times a day for 30 plus years) was amazing. He took time to take photos of each group and help us find the best places to take photos in general. We don't normally splurge on things like this. We're so glad we did. There are things you wouldn't be able to access without a guide snd there is no better guide than Toney! The seats were comfortable. It was a little bit of an effort getting in snd out of the vehicle but doable. Bring a blanket and remember you're on sand so if the wind blows... 100% recommend Toney and MV Safari. read more

Two of us did the sunrise tour. It was well worth getting up so early - being out in the middle of the valley as the sun came up was spectacular! Our guide knew where to take us for fantastic views and great places to take photos (some of which you can't get to on your own, even if you have a high-clearance vehicle). He was very knowledgeable about the geology, plant life, and culture and history of the people there. An added advantage of the sunrise tour is that there are very few other folks out there that early (at least when the temperature is in the 20s - fortunately we were in a heated van - I believe they use open vehicles when it is warmer). read more
