Although we didn't sea orcas breaching over our kayaks like we'd dreamed of, we did see plant life, fish, crab, seals on rocks, and "Ellie Mae" the female elephant seal on shore. 1.5 tour was the perfect amount of time for our day. We arrived on the morning of the full eclipse, and AYC offered us special glasses so we could view the eclipse safely. After our safety briefing, we met the moorage captain for a brief (well, rushed) training on the boat. It didn't matter that the trainer was cursory because we were on a learn and curse, and our training captain had our backs. We learned so much on our weeklong cruise. Captain Larry is an outstanding teacher and coach. I know at least 5 new hitches and feel more confident on a boat, both as crew and as captain. We also learned to crab and cook crab. We hiked throughout the week and learned how to deploy the dinghy. What a blast! We will certainly be back for more, especially in the "off" season of October. The weather was still beautiful and the wildlife was abundant.

Jesse met us near home with all the equipment needed for a day on the bay. Our first lesson was a wet exit - sitting inside the kayak with the skirt on, flipping the kayak upside down, yanking the skirt off and doing a somersault out. It was scary at first, but not that scary after doing it once, plus it built up confidence to be on the water. Jesse was very patient with his instruction and gave us great safety and stroke tips. We highly recommend Jesse and Fidalgo Paddlesports for anyone new to sea kayaking. We've already signed up for our next class on Rescue and Recovery in Anacortes. For those more advanced kayakers, Fidalgo Paddlesports has a full range of courses for all levels, plus instructor certifications. Thanks Jesse for the perfect new Sea Kayaking experience!

Despite that, they refused to issue a full refund. When I booked, I expected a reasonable level of customer service and flexibility, especially for something as unpredictable as getting sick. Instead, I was met with rigid policy. It felt like they cared more about keeping my money than doing right by a customer who couldn't safely attend. I understand that businesses have cancellation policies, but there should be some level of compassion and common sense--especially when someone gives advance notice and isn't canceling last minute. Unfortunately, this experience left a bad impression. I would hesitate to book with them again and recommend others read the fine print very carefully before committing... because even with advance notice, you will not get a full refund if you need to cancel.

Not only was the whole experience so much fun (I had some anxiety about being in a body of water where I cannot see the bottom), but it was super educational, with some facts about the sandstone cliffs we passed and the animals we encountered. With the cool water and the great company, I forgot all about the heat wave we are having and even saw some seals! Will definitely be back for at least one shorter tour, and maybe even a day trip!

And Ryan, our instructor, we can't say enough good things about him!!!! He was super knowledgeable, professional, and a skilled instructor...but just as importantly, he was kind, supportive, and a great communicator...he tailored the program to meet both of our needs, and we both learned SO MUCH! one of us had experience with whitewater kayaking, but he was impressed with how many things he learned that will make his paddling more efficient, easier, and safer... We've been out since to work on the assisted and self-rescues and were very successful! we look forward to practicing while the nice weather lasts and look forward to taking the class again in the spring.

Moreover, the tandem kayaks were easy to use. A big thanks to Sue and "the other guy" who took care of us from beginning to end.

Another sunny PNW weekend, another chance to explore and find a new beach! Snoo-oosh is a…read moresmall-but-mighty little slice of paradise with a beautiful view of Whidbey Island. It's a level, rocky beach, with some driftwood - perfect for exploring, beach walking, or just sitting on a log and taking it all in. There's a bit of a rough parking area (watch out for potholes) and zero facilities, so keep that in mind as it's a bit of a drive to the nearest restroom. This would make a great beach for kayaking or canoeing, as the bay it sits on is semi-protected and seemed insulated from the wind. Note: the map indicates there's a boat launch here, but there is not. There appears to have been one at some point, but it's been mostly washed away and covered with rocks and driftwood - definitely no way to actually use it to launch anything but a portable watercraft.
