We planned on camping but with the tropical storm hitting we needed to adjust our plans and Cape Pines filled our needs. Check-in was easy and the staff was super nice and friendly. This is an older place but well maintained. The room was very clean and they had hardwood floors which was nice. We are at the beach and it was a tropical storm. The room had a slight mildew oder but a quick trip to the front desk and I returned with two types of air freshener. Sprayed a little in the A/C and around the room and it was perfect. The only thing I can say a negative was the Air Conditioner. It was a little noisy but other than that we stayed dry and had a clean place to crash. We stayed here for 3 nights in October and loved it. Very welcoming staff. Clean room and very quiet. It's not the Hilton, but it's better. It's "Old Florida" in the best sense. You can see the pride they take in taking care of the facility and the guests. We changed our dates 3 times because of work issues, and the owner was so kind each time. Our little dog was welcomed. The room was large with a king bed and pull-out sofa. We had a kitchenette, so we could prepare breakfast. We forgot some items in the room, and the owner called to let us know and to return them to us. What service! This motel is Clean and Quiet! We stayed from Sept 15 -Sept 20. We arrived late on Sunday and Dipti was so wonderful! She runs a very nice motel and we recommend this to anyone staying in Buxton. The pool is very clean also. It is very close to the beach and Dipti knows all the good beaches! The supermarket across the road is large and has everything you could need. Was happy to find a place open at 6:30 pm on a Sunday during off season. Got our room and upon opening the door the stench of mildew surrounded me. But I figured, it's better than sleeping in the truck so we went inside. Everything was old. Furniture, decor', bedding. Not antique, just old. Went to take a bath, the bath stopper did not work but I dealt with it. TV was very fuzzy, still I didn't complain. The next morning my husband went for coffee and I went out to the open air deck for a cigarette, needed the fresh air anyway because even the bedspread smelled like mildew. Both of us had back aches from the squeaky mattress but still wasn't going to complain. After my cigarette, I noticed there were no ashtrays or butt cans so I put the cigarette out on the coffee lid from my last nights coffee cup I was drinking from, and carried it in the room and immediately put it in the trash bag and tied it in a knot so as not to have the smell throughout the room. We packed up and dropped off our keys. Shortly after someone from hotel called and said we would be accessed a $150 fine for smoking in the room. I told them I had not smoked in the room and explained what had occurred and stated that I'm certain they couldn't have smelled on cigarette butt in a trash bag in a room so infested with mildew. My clothes smell like mildew, and my husbands. I have a headache from the mildew and a back ache from the bed. Will never stay there again. My cold truck would have been much better. I'm assuming since I only saw one other guest there that $150 charge is how they afford to stay open. By taking advantage. I even left the maid service a tip. My tip to you.... Make reservations elsewhere unless mildew and back aches are what you like. read more

My wife, 2 kids, and I stayed here for a couple of days before moving into our condo. for a week in the Outer Banks. We come up early to avoid the check in traffic. Usually we stop at the Hyatt Place in Chesapeake for a night. We decided to extend the stay for a couple days and my wife booked us in this economy hotel. For what it is, it is ok. It is definitely clean. The pool is nice. They have a couple gas grills (we cooked steaks one night) but they were not cleaned so they were a little gross. I did the best I could cleaning it prior to cooking. The other issue was only one of the 2 grills worked and the one that worked was out in the sweltering sun. Boy it was hot. The maintenance guy did fix the second grill very quickly, but it was too late for us. The rooms as I said before are definitely clean and well kept. The housekeeper comes every day usually in the afternoon which was great. Another small complaint we have is the room could have more hooks to hang wet clothes and to place your bath towels when you are not using them. They also have free coffee in the morning starting at 8 AM. That is a nice touch. The best thing about staying here were the people. Everyone is really nice and they try to make your stay as comfortable as possible. Don't take the review the wrong way. This is a really nice place to stay. You just have to know what you are getting. One tip if you want to go to the beach go to Frisco and not the lighthouse. They have showers at Frisco which helps prevent getting rocks and sand all over your room when you return from the beach. They also have modern bathroom facilities at Frisco. The bottom is if you want to spend a couple of no frills, bargain nights in the Outer Banks, this is your place. You get what you pay for and a little more which is all you can really ask. read more

Well managed with very friendly staff. We traveled with our two dogs and felt very welcomed. The large fenced in area behind our room was a real hit with two energetic dogs. It's centrally located to everything...even a great grocery across the road. Most of the other guests said they were return guests and also appreciated the hospitality. Cape Pines is our go-to place to stay when we're in Buxton. It's affordable, the service is good, & the rooms are spacious and clean. That's about all I ask for in a motel at the beach. Well, that & proximity to the beach. Cape Pines is not oceanfront, but the beach is just a very short drive away & it's easy to find parking. And did I mention that Orange Blossom Cafe is within walking distance? Score! When I'm at the beach I don't spend much time in my room, so I don't mind that the rooms here are outdated. They're kept impeccably clean (especially considering that they're pet friendly). Our room was huge and we enjoyed the king size bed. On our checkout day I called the front desk to request a late checkout (noon) & they obliged without hesitation & no added fee. Can't wait for another trip to OBX! read more

Cape Pines is the best bang for your buck if you want to take your pet with you to the Outer Banks for a few days. The room was clean, the bedsheets and towels were spotless, and there was plenty of space for myself, my boyfriend, and our dog. Buxton is in a perfect location. Though it's an added hour drive south of Duck, I personally enjoy the hometown feel versus huge tourist areas. The beaches are less crowded, and there's the ferry that'll take you to Ocracoke Island, for free! I'll be returning. read more

We did the recession buster deal and trusted the reviews on TripAdvisor and Yelp and so glad we did! This place was perfect for us and our dogs. There is nothing fancy and you don't have all the crazy amenities that the bigger chain motels have, but if you like clean and simple, this cannot be anymore perfect! There is a nice big fenced in play area in the back of the courtyard for the dogs. There is a nice clean pool, laundry on site, and several gas grills and picnic tables. It is close to the beach, and alot of delicious local restaurants. I really have nothing bad to say about this place...we will definitely be staying here again! read more

If you are looking for grand views or deluxe amenities, probably not the place for you. But a decent place that's clean, budget friendly and close to restaurants, grocery store, shops, and sights (you could walk to Cape Hatteras lighthouse) -- this is will make you happy. This place smells terrible! We first came to this place thinking we had paid $179 for an efficiency room pictured on Hotels.com. We got no such room. The room had a horrible odor and was clearly dirty. No one has taken a bottle of windex to this place in at least a month. I had pictures of dirty coffee table, dirty bathroom mirror, and a frog that had been smashed in the doorway. The stove is completely covered in soot from past residents. They are covered with aluminum foil. This room reminds me of someone who just collects a bunch of stuff and tries to make a hotel out of it. If you want to cook, you better wash the dishes first. Knives and glasses are filthy. See pictures. Luckily we brought plastic wear. The cake topper though was... we came home from dinner early to jump in the pool. The pool is the most redeeming quality of this shady place. It really is spectacular at night. We arrived at 9:40... 20 min before closing. Locked. The owner not only didn't care we were inconvenienced. He wouldn't unlock it and said "it's really not that big of a deal". If you value your customers hard earned money and time off... every 20 minutes of vacation is a BIG DEAL. Don't stay here. Hatteras SOL restaurant is off the chain though! read more

For years my husband's family rented a big beach house in Avon for 10 of us to stay. When we got divorced, I really missed OBX. I found Cape Pines on the internet in 2014. I'd seen it many times since I used to go to the market across the street for years. My son and I decided to stay there in August 2014 and ended up going back in '15 and '16. Looking forward to going back this year, as well. Owners are super friendly. We were late getting there one year, but I called them around 7 (I was at least an hour away and it was pouring rain) and told them I was gonna be late. The gentleman said, "Stay on the mainland and have dinner if want, you're room is ready and we'll be up when you get here." I love everything about Cape Pines. read more

Great little pet friendly motel just around the corner from the Hatteras Lighthouse. Everything you need is close by with the local grocery store just across the street! We stayed in the 2 bedroom suite with kitchen and living area and although the style is that of a hunting / fishing cabin with the wood panel walls it was clean and cozy and comfortable with good wifi and a fridge #couldntaskformorethanthat will definitely see me again :) read more

We've been staying here for the past few years every time we come down here. Great newly remodeled rooms, friendly owners and close to all of our favorite places. Either during tourist season or the off - season this place is always well kept. Not too many places are pet friendly and that's one of the things that brought us here the 1st time. This is a wonderful hotel! The staff is very nice and helpful, and the ladies who clean the room do a great and thorough job! I would highly recommend this motel to anyone! The rooms are very accommodating and include a fridge w/ small freezer, microwave, tv and coffee pot with coffee! Also they have laundry downstairs, a community large freezer. The ferry to our rental in Ocracoke was cancelled due to bad weather, and we stumbled across this motel while searching for a place to sleep for the night. It was the first place we found that was open late at night during the off-season, and we were pleasantly surprised! The man behind the counter was friendly and helpful (even checked the next day's weather forecast for us). Our room was cleaner and nicer than we could have expected. Stayed here in the past and returned in July of this year and was a bit disappointed. Beds and bathrooms were clean, but the kitchen lacked it. Dirty cabinets, dishes that i wouldn't feed a dog with. The furniture was worn out, wouldn't let my kids lay on the futon it looked so bad. Two chairs so worn out you couldn't sit in them more than a few minutes. Room had a smell to it that stayed on all our clothes and COVID masks until we got home and washed them. Kitchen table held up with a nasty stack of napkins to keep it from wobbling. The real kicker was the fly paper hanging from the ceiling. Old giant bulky entertainment center that had been turned into a dresser, door fell off when we opened it. Had an ancient tube tv inside it. The Location is great and they have an excellent swimming pool which is nice after a hot day on the beach. It's disappointing it's gone downhill since 2015, as it was immaculate then. read more

I truly loved staying here in the beginning of March this year. My room on the second floor was spotless and had wood floors. Basically everything was wood in the room which gave the room its charm. The beach was a few minutes drive away. The staff were great - I left behind my computer charger in the room and they mailed it to me to my home in no time and without charge. Quiet, simple, clean motel. Grocery store across the street and can see the light from the lighthouse out your room door, or at least I could, I was on the second floor. If I had a complaint, if you can even call this a complaint, my room had a strong smell of some type of cleaning product, not sure what it was, maybe the carpet had been cleaned or the bedspreads, I even thought it could be that the wall panels might have been polished, so I opened my window to air it out, so this is not a complaint, just an fyi in case maybe the cleaning product is too strong.
