The location is crazy close to the water and you're literally on the beach. Staff were friendly and our king bed was much better than other hotel box spring beds we used on this trip. I am grateful that the owner allowed us to switch our stay to a different weekend even though we had booked with Booking.com. We had a quick one night stay on probably one of the coldest days of the year. Originally we were supposed to stay oceanfront, but if you know anything about the Buxton area, you would know that that was pretty unlikely. Right now that whole section of the hotel that is on the ocean is closed. So they put us in a room on the sound side and we actually had to use four-wheel-drive to get into the parking lot because of recent overwash. We were given a two bedroom efficiency unit that had a water view. It was very clean and basic. My only real complaint is that the blinds in all of the windows need to be replaced and need to fit properly. There are so many missing pieces and gaps that you have zero privacy in the living room area. And the broken blinds in the sleeping area let a lot of light in which could be problematic for some. We also woke up to no water because the pipes had frozen. Again, not a big deal given the below freezing temperatures when we were there. We used some bottled water to brush our teeth and were on our way anyway. This place is older and does need some work, but I don't regret booking there. It was fine for what we needed. read more

STAY AWAY. FRAUD!!! We thought we had a reservation here for 10/3 booked on booking.com, but hadn't heard from the Motel so called to verify on Monday 9/30, also, nothing in my booking.com Trips, current, future, past, so wasn't sure what happened. Figured would sort it out when we got to NC. We spoke to a woman who told us we had no reservation. We had been staying in Avon, and saw that the Motel looked closed and the parking lot empty. We made another reservation for 10/3at the Salt Aire in Kitty Hawk instead because we had no accommodation!. We are in the process of filing fraud charges with the NC AG and BBB, and recouping from our credit card. The Motel is saying the booking was from Booking.com. There is no booking listed- I am Genius status and use Booking.com all the time. RUN AWAY fast. I wanted to add too it was our 20th anniversary. This was a special trip for us, and it's a terrible feeling to be taken advantage of. I am from a coastal tourist area as well, have worked in hospitality. We have a phone record of the call on 9/30. This feels like a case of a fraudster counting on us to just say "oh well." We will not. I don't want this happening to one other couple or family. The Cape Hatteras Motel charged us $280 and said we were a no show. DO NOT BOOK HERE. We will get our money back from our CC company, but it's a hassle and a bad feeling. read more

Great spot to relax and let the sound of the Atlantic pull your stress away. The apartments are spacious, clean and have all you need for a visit- we decided to stay longer than expected because it's such a cool spot. The front desk is very helpful and has puzzles and mystery books for use if you like. Beach is just outside your door and you can walk for miles at sunrise or sunset next to the beautiful cape dunes. The town has most of what you need - grocery store, bait shop and surf/fish advice and folks were welcoming to outsiders like us. Only downside was that the one channel I wanted on the tv was in and out during the game but, I'm a cowboy fan so most would call that karma taking a bite. Wow! As they say, "It looked better in the brochure". Booked this room online and feel like I got the bait and switch. Pictures show the rooms facing the ocean, but we ended up with a "sound view" instead. No ocean. We arrived right before 5:00pm to find the office closed and our key pinned to the wall outside the door. Once we found out our room was not on the ocean, no one was around to speak to. That was okay in the end, because the ENTIRE BEACH is being dredged and pumped. To get to the water, you have get over a barely climbable huge dune of sand, go over huge rusty pipes to navigate, and finally reach a waterline of all broken shells with very little fine sand to walk on. Loud machinery is running day and night on the beach. On top of that, the office is trying to capitalize on this situation by selling t-shirts about "pumping". Why not warn your guests the beach is destroyed instead before they spend $338 on this disaster? Thank heavens there was a decent heated pool, but the spa jets had no pressure. Towels and bedding was very nice, but vents were covered in thick dust. Sand was everywhere and the room smelled a bit, but it is a beach. The sea air has taken its toll on this place. The wooded railings and decking are rough. I would have probably chalked it up to just a bad experience, but now all our clothes smell musty from this run down motel. We have to wash everything as our trip has another week to go. Rent a house in town and stay away from this place. read more

Got a two room suite for several days. Bad: Told by staff that only regular, lesser priced rooms get daily service of fresh towels, soaps, etc. Odd, especially for $175/night. Also, furniture smelled bad, like really bad. Like vinegar and sweat. I sanitized everything as soon as I got home even before I took my shoes off. Sliding door scrern in room with sliding door didn't lock so could not enjoy the ocean breeze while sleeping. Dishwasher almost fell out of wall, be careful! Mold on bath vents (see pic) and faucet in bath cracked/corroded (see pic). Parking bays are not uniform and not conducive to large vehicles. WiFi spotty. Good:. Lots of room in suite. Nice views. Noticed this place is for sale, might be a good idea. read more

Everything about my stay at this motel was perfect. The rooms are picturesque and cozy, as if you are staying at your own beach house. The pastel and beach-themed decor are beautiful. The rooms are also incredibly clean and organized. The beds are big and comfortable. The bathroom and shower are spacious. They also offer free wifi in the rooms. And the view- Oh. My. Goodness. Breathtaking!! Make sure to book a room on the ocean. The hotel rooms are right on the beach- literally. They are right on the beach. You step outside of your room and you are on sand, about 100 feet away from the ocean. We spent so much time sitting on the balcony to watch the waves and also walking along the gorgeous beach. It was never once crowded or full of tourists. That was one of my favorite things about this location. It was quiet and peaceful. You would think that the beautiful beach would draw large groups of "spring breakers," but we thankfully only ran into locals and families. Last, but certainly not least, the hospitality is wonderful. We spent a lot of time talking to Jan at the front desk. She had the most positive demeanor at all times. By the end of our short stay, it was as if we had known her for years. She made such great recommendations for restaurants and sights. She is extremely familiar with OBX because she used to stay at Cape Hatteras with her family every summer. After we left the motel, we accidentally left behind a few things in the room. Jan called us immediately and offered to mail them to us free of charge. She is so sweet. When I return to Cape Hatteras, I absolutely refuse to stay anywhere else. My husband and I were planning an extended quiet weekend away for our Anniversary, found this motel on Booking.com and was lured in by the Oceanfront rooms. We got a great price to begin with, and had received a voucher for $90 off our stay from Booking.com if we spent over X amount of dollars. We wanted to book our stay at another local accommodation originally, but that particular place was fully booked, and this was our second choice. Upon arriving, we were greeted by a pleasant front desk attendant who seemed genuinely friendly and accommodating. We told her it was our Anniversary and she offered us a complimentary bottle of wine. We were staying across the street from the office in an oceanfront room on the second story. Our room was 212. It was an end unit and had a picturesque view of the beautiful Atlantic ocean. Although it was raining off and on upon arrival, it was still a warm April afternoon and it took away nothing from the views. We were immediately impressed with the clean smell radiating from the room when we opened the door. I love the smell of 'clean' and I know the difference in a Glad plug in that is trying to masque the odors and a true fresh clean smell. We had a king size bed that had obviously fresh, white linens on it and a small bath off from our room. The room was basic, but very clean and it was just what we were looking for. The room had laminate hard wood floors, but the shower area and sink were outdated and could have used an upgrade. The blind facing the street was broken in one area. But there was nothing too big that would turn us off from staying again. The bed wasn't very comfortable and my husband did wake with backaches all 3 mornings we were there. There are 2 cute white rockers on the deck that face the beach if you want to relax and watch the sun rise or set. The first morning we awoke there, we got up before sunrise and sat on the deck watching the sunrise with a cup of coffee and it was the best day ever! If you are wanting frills, this place is not for you. But if you are satisfied with just a clean room and a place to lay your head, this will suffice. I love that it isn't a huge tourist spot in the spring and the entire area of Buxton just had a nice, laid back relaxing feel to it. Our vacation was nothing short of perfect. We would most certainly stay again! read more

If you want an ocean view during your stay in Cape Hatteras, you won't get any closer than the ocean view rooms at Cape Hatteras Motel! The ocean is literally RIGHT outside your door! There are rocking chairs on the balcony by each room so you can sit and watch the waves, and you can walk right onto the beach from the stairs by the rooms. You can see the top of the Cape Hatteras lighthouse from spots on the top floor of stairs too, and are close enough to see the lights from the lighthouse flashing across the ocean at night. Our room (308) was an efficiency room, with THE most comfortable king-sized bed, living area, and full kitchen. Homey touches throughout - like the welcome mat at the door - made it feel more like a little beach cottage, and it's more than roomy enough for two people. Be forewarned: you will have to climb stairs to get to your room, so if you're unable to handle stairs, be sure to request a ground floor room! I've noticed other reviews that complain about cleanliness, and we did not find that to be an issue at all. Granted, some of the appliances and furniture show a little wear, but everything was clean, and we appreciated the overall charm. Office staff is super nice and very knowledgable - don't hesitate to ask for information or recommendations! There's a great little lending library in the office as well with a great supply of books. We can't wait to visit OBX again, and will absolutely be staying at Cape Hatteras Mote again. The only thing we'll do differently next time is bring the kids along and upgrade to a suite! We stayed in an ocean front king. Rooms are very clean but need updating -- especially the very small bathroom. I will say it was by far the cleanest hotel bathroom I have ever seen, but it's barely functional with a tub/shower combo and a toilet ,and literally two feet of space to stand (the sink is outside in the main room). Also, while there are blinds for privacy, there are no curtains -- so you get full sun between 6-7am and it is hard to sleep in. These are the main two reasons for 4/5 and not 5/5. The rest is neither positive nor negative, but I just want to throw it out there as things to consider depending on the type of trip you are planning. The access to the beach from the ocean front properties isn't direct. You have to go down 2-3 flights of steps (depending on which level you are on) to the ground level and then back up steps to get to the beach. The beach in front of the buildings is narrow and dredged sand, but the waves seem decent for surfing. Everyday we were here 5-10 surfers were out. Anyway, the view is awesome because the ocean is RIGHT there (you can hear the waves in your room). It's not awesome if you want to walk right outside your door and plop down for the day. Personally, I was cool with driving to a public access a couple miles where the beach is wider. But I didn't have my 2 year old with me. I would most definitely come back the next time my husband and I are getting away (like this trip)-- probably wouldn't pick this place for a "family" vacation. I don't mean to sound like I am knocking the place, it's nice and the staff was super to deal with -- and like I said super clean -- plus the prices are definitely reasonable. You can walk to decent restaurants (mmm Angelo's) and Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. This is definitely one of the more walkable areas of the Outer Banks. It just really depends on your needs. read more

We stayed here for a long weekend and found it to be adequate. I choose the Cape Hatteras Motel for the great location and an affordable place to stay with a full kitchen. We stayed in the Soundside Apartments. Some quick observations: - The rooms were old and dated but clean. I would recommend bringing your own sheets and towels. - The apartments are located a short walk from the beach (you have to cross HWY 12). - The pool and ice machine are located on the Soundside. The pool was nice and clean. - There are park-type grills available for use (we cooked out every night) - The management staff were friendly and helpful. We will stay here again. read more

Just being directly on the beach is worth the price. Not fancy but that's ok, my only criticism is that the housekeeper doesn't housekeep. When we arrived the room was fine. Next day they left new towels but did not make bed or wipe down shower or sink. Second day they brought new towels but didn't even take the new towels. Day three I was sitting out side the room and lady asked if I needed anything and brought a plastic bag of towels never went into the room. This is my Buxton NC go to spot for oceanside Hatteras Island at its best. I got a clean, everything functional room, with the prettiest view of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore right outside. Much needed beach nourishment is going on while I was just recently there. It didn't bother me and I was glad it was finally being done. Just bring a little patience, enjoy the fresh seafood, ocean breeze and a few extra dollars to tip the hard working seasonal help there. read more

Best service and hospitality! We have stayed here before and had good service then too. Clean and spacious hotel rooms and nice porch area to relax in away from the sun. Beautiful and not super busy beach area and nice clean pool and hot tub. In the summer heat, my car battery died and the staff were so accommodating to help us fix our issue. Susie took us down the street multiple times to get a new battery and parts on her day off and was there the whole time while our issue was getting fixed. Arthur, the maintenance staff, even completely took my old battery out and put the new one in for me right away. Great hospitality and help when we really needed it. Older motel with capable, friendly management. The owners are locals and have a passion for the business and the motel. They keep the place clean and operating smoothly. They visit the hotel often and are very helpful and open. This is a great value AND a great experience on Hatteras Island. The property abuts the national seashore and 4 of the hotel's 6 buildings are ON THE BEACH overlooking the Atlantic. The other 2 overlook Pamlico Sound which is full of wildlife. You can choose which view you want. The experience here is so peaceful and so close to the water - this is why I came to the beach. One of the best vacation experiences of my life! read more

My daughter & I are taking a cross country road trip from Santa Monica to DC & planned our last night to stay at this motel. My husband & I had stayed here 3 years ago & LOVED it!! However, we checked in this afternoon & found our room to have a rusty refrigerator, very stained carpet, a flickering overhead light, window blinds that had missing parts & a room that was not clean. We are very disappointed, but after hauling suitcases & an ice chest up 2 flights of stairs we did not want to walk across the highway to the office to complain! Well, actually we could not even reach the reception. No phone in the room & no one answered after many tries from our cell phones. The Wifi was also not consistent & would not stay connected. (Oh, and by the way...the only place to get ice was across the highway at the office--bring your running shoes!) The woman at the reception desk was very nice but overwhelmed...her job description evidently includes repairs as she was leaving to fix a doorknob with WD-40 as well. The view from the deck in front of our room is spectacular, sitting in rocking chairs, but that's all this place has going for it! It is too bad that this motel has gone into such a state of disrepair...it is not the place we found & loved before. read more

This place is right on the beach. Can"t get any closer! We stayed in one of the townhouses & the views were incredible. The place was very roomy & had a full kitchen with a dishwasher. The rooms are a little dated, but very clean. The townhouses do not come with daily maid service; however the standard rooms do. The management is very friendly, and helpful. We asked for a grill to cookout one evening, and when they couldn't locate one they purchased a new one for our use. Definitely plan on returning to the Cape Hatteras Motel when visiting the Outer Banks again. read more

First of all, the staff was extremely helpful and friendly. They let us check in early since our room was ready, helped with little extras we forgot and even gave us extra trash bags to help protect our belongings when we found ourselves in a downpour on check out day. The rooms were clean, but could have used some fixes here and there. The kitchen was equipped with everything we needed but a bowl had a cut in the bottom, the coffee pot was a mess, some of the outlets didn't work (and the ones that did were so lose our plugs kept sliding out), and the beds were really uncomfortable. All in all, we enjoyed our stay and for the money it was not a bad deal at all. The most disappointing thing was that from booking.com, the location was deceiving. I should have done better research because I didn't realize our rooms were across the highway. Walking across with a small child and beach supplies without a crosswalk was very difficult and dangerous. It was still extremely close to the beach and all in all we were very happy with our stay. I think next time, we will pay a little extra for the other side of the road. read more

This place was just what we were looking for. It is on the beach, relaxed and clean. The ocean air does a number on metal so certain things are rusty which is normal/expected. The beds were comfortable, sheets crisp, microwave clean and the bathroom spacious and clean. The only small complaint is the coffee maker was a little off but we went across the street to Fatty's and got a cup to go and it was great. Make sure to keep the door to your room closed, the flies are stinkers and the sand annoying but what the heck you're at the beach! The staff were extremely friendly. We visited the pool and it was clean and well maintained. I believe you need to bring your own umbrella though, there was no place with shade/cover. Parking was easy too. We would go again in a heart beat if we were in the area. read more

I found this to be a fine place. We arrived late at night (or more exactly early in the morning) and found the keys ready where the owners said they'd be. The two bedroom place we had was on the top floor of the building closest to the highway, but it had Anderson windows and was well insulates, so there was no problem with the noise. The rooms were clean and well furnished, There is a good sized pool which we didn't have a chance to use, and the ocean is right out back. The cabins to the back have an ocean view, by the way. Anyway we found this place welcoming and were very pleased with everything. read more

This is our second staying here, and we love it! The rooms are a bit outdated, but still beachy and clean. Besides, who cares what the decor looks like on the inside, when it is so beautiful outside!?! We stayed in the suites across the street from the beach, which are very comfortable. My only complaint is that the beds are hard for my taste. This is a great location, in walking distance to beach, restaurants, and shopping and a short drive to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. We highly recommend! We plan to make our stay here an annual tradition. read more

Extremely rude woman to local teens. She is an older woman with blondish white hair. We were not causing any harm, there was no one at the pool, just minding our business like any other normal day, and she walked up and started freaking out for no apparent reason. Yelling and fussing over something that could've been handled appropriately. She took things way out of proportion. We left the pool and moved to the beach on our bikes. We put our bikes BEHIND A DUMPSTER. Apparently they watched us that whole time and sent another person to say our bikes were in a dangerous place for guests to trip over. Do not go here. If they can't treat locals with respect then they won't treat you with respect either. Case closed. Highly recommended shopping at Conners Supermarket and staying at Lighthouse View Motel. read more

Cape Hatteras Motel is my little piece of heaven on earth. I have been coming here for 20 years and can't say enough good about it. The owners are very nice. yes, it could use a little updating, but then I'm at the beach and am so happy to be in this quiet beautiful place . To be able to sleep to the sound of the ocean and then get up to have breakfast in the kitchen and watch the waves practically roll under your feet is wonderful. I love the fact that this place is remote enough for peace and quiet...no roller coasters, Ferris wheels and miles of fast food! I hope for many more years of this great place. read more

I will say at first I found this motel quite iffy , stayed there for six days in the off-season ... it is a little rundown.. however by the end of my week I couldn't wait to go back. It's proximity to beachfront is absolutely amazing my last night there I sat in the rocking chair on the porch until nearly midnight listening to the waves it was so relaxing. The off-season was an amazing time to go because it felt like we had the place to ourselves. Compared to other hotels in the area this was the best one for the price . The Outer Banks itself is a geocaches Paradise found over 20 geocaches on my vacation there. The staff was very friendly. In fact the people in that area were much more friendlier then ones north it was a very quaint community, Beautiful place for sunsets!. If you're looking for a relaxing peaceful vacation and don't mind no-frills I Would highly recommend this motel! read more
