My husband & I really enjoyed our stay here & the girl in the office was so sweet. If you need anything she's the gal in the know! If you didn't bring your toothbrush, or you didn't bring toothpaste or comb, any of the normal things you would normally use they have it right there in the office. My daughter from Tx knew we were staying here and called a few days before and Robin helped her make a surprise when we entered the room. Well I called 5 days before because I have a very sick child that needs their tonsils out and they said their policy is 7 days. Couldn't explain why the email says something different. We stayed here in August 2025. Upon arrival our room had a slight smell of bleach. Towels, small refrigerator and a tiny coffee pot was provided in the room. During our stay (5 days) we saw cleaning staff; however they never made it to our room. Not once! we had to go to the office and get new towels and additional toilet paper. The longer we stayed the damper our room became. We actually saw mold growing on the walls in the restroom and the carpet felt damp under our feet. Our clothes started to feel damp. The only saving grace for us was we spent minimal time in the room. We cut our vacation short and left OBX. read more

This Inn may be the closest to classifying as hotel. There are many motel and bed and breakfast. This Inn has most reasonable price in the island. Reservation is a must. Because their season start at mid June to about January. We were there one week before the Virginia and North Carolina school have their summer break. It is perfect for us. The Inn has a tower you can overlook the Cape. We saw the lighthouse light there. The Inn also has 24 hour free coffee and juice at the lobby. Check Inn is very simple. The room is clean. Our room slightly smelled like mold. Front desk and staff was friendly. Pool was great and appeared clean. Some rust was on our sheets from the pullout bed. DO NOT stay here. Raceist, judgemental. I recently went in to book a room for 1 night as my rental home in the area had wood floors refinished and I could not stay the night with the fumes. I was denied a room by the young foreign man at the desk- because- I am local! Flat out denied, this is preposterous. NO reason, no explanation. Just stating "we are not allowed to rent to locals." This is not a high crime, drug trafficking, sex trafficking area!!!! Nor do I believe I appear to be any of these! I am 65 yr old woman, lived here 45+years, with a newer vehicle, 2 homes on the Island, neatly dressed, presented cc card and Drivers license, denied a room! At what I now realize- is a dump! I own 2 homes on the Island, frequently send guests looking for a short stay to this hotel. Never again. Stayed at the Hatteras Island inn called before booking was told pets were allowed. So we went with our 5lb poodle and everything was fine upon arrival check in was great...Got to room and called desk to replace comforter because it had several stains, no problem one was brought in a timely manner, guy seen our dog and said nothing because we were told it was ok...cool....I cleaned our room due to sand and hair in the shower and some fuzzy substance in sink...that's cool too I never complained bc I can clean it and sanitize this...but it wasn't clean at all...Sunday morning we wake up get ready and place pee pads down and food for our puppy, go get breakfast and come back, we barely closed the door when an irate staff member told us they are not pet friendly and our "Damn yappy Dog" was a disturbance...now mind you when we pulled up she wasn't barking and not making noise I'm sure she barked a little when we left but she always gets quite in no time...she also told us she was charging our card $100 bc of the pet yet when we checked in there was a pet at the front desk another indication that it's pet friendly also there website states they are dog and cat friendly. The Hatteras Island Inn (this place is no longer a Comfort Inn) is okay, though I've seen better. The rooms don't have any views of much other than the parking lot, and it's an exterior corridor motel, meaning that everyone walking by can see right into your room because the door and the window are on the same side of your room. The beds are doubles, which felt a little small to me (I'm used to a queen-size, but it worked well enough. The location seems to work, being within walking distance of souvenirs, supplies, and food. Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is also close by, but a tad further than most would probably want to walk. However, for a facility located on an island where mobile data service is spotty at best, there should be wi-fi available throughout the facility. The only wi-fi that this facility offers is in the lobby. That signal does not reach more than half of the facility. My room was 112, approximately halfway down the row of rooms, and the wi-fi service did not reach that room. The lobby is open 24 hours, but one shouldn't have to go to the lobby for Internet access, as wi-fi is a standard amenity these days. Don't forget while you're here, however, to check out their observation tower. It's worth five minutes for a quick look. read more

Extremely disappointed! I paid $1269 for a handicap accessible room for 4 nights and below is what I got. If I could rate this stay lower then it would be a negative 5 star! When I called to check the place I was told it was beach front, that I would have a handicap accessible room, that it would accommodate 3 adults with a king size bed and a fold out couch. None of this was true! The property is about a 15 minute walk to beach access. The person on duty called me 5 times to check me in because he was leaving early and that was from an unknown number. I finally answered it and couldn't understand him when I finally did, he checked us in by phone and texted the code to get in the room. The room was definitely not handicap accessible. There were no rails at the toilet, the bathroom was too small for a wheelchair. There was a one and a half inch difference between the edge of the toilet and the door so you had to go into the bathroom completely and then be able to turn and reach the door knob to close it. The only rail is in the tub that you have to be able to lift your leg knee high to step into and hold onto the rail the entire time you are taking a shower because the tub is too slick to stand up. There were no grips or anything on the bottom of the tub. When I went to the office that was supposed to be open until 10 pm for check-in they were closed and I was told he left before 9. There was no one on the property to correct any issues that might come up. There was a sign up that the lobby would open at 8am and a manager would be there. In the morning I was told she would be in at 9am. I went back again! There was one bed in the room with two straight back chairs. The bed was so tall, waist high literally, that my elderly mother had to get on a step stool to get into it and she has mobility problems. My disabled adult son had to climb into it as well. I had to sleep on the floor, that's right the floor! No fold out couch, no couch, nothing but 2 straight backed wood chairs. This aggravated my asthma and I had to have a breathing treatment. I was moved to a room next door the next day with 2 double beds that were a little lower and easier to get in however, the bathroom was identical! We still did not have a handicap accessible bathroom! When we ran out of tissue paper, I had to go to the office for it and any extra towels because they don't clean the rooms until you check out. That includes the trash, you have to take it out yourself and find a large trashcan to put it in. Also, the room was not cleaned! When I was able to go to the office at 8am to complain and get them to change the room, the person on duty, who checked me in the night before laughed because I had to sleep on the floor. The manager when she came in did change the room but as I said, it wasn't much better. When I asked what she was going to do about me having to sleep on the floor, she said she would refund me one night, I'm still waiting for the refund. I paid extra for a handicap accessible room for 4 nights, and still didn't get it! read more

We picked this hotel because of the price and location. Since we were planning to do a lot of day excursions, we weren't looking for a lot of amenities. However, this hotel was a disappointment. The shower curtain and bathroom tiles were gross. There was no light fixture over the mirror over the sink. The light switch fir that light needs to be replaced. The bed and pillows were comfortable and although there were a lot of guests, it was quiet. We had a view of the gas station across the street. The best part was being walking distance from Diamond Shoals Restaurant and a short drive to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and beach. We will not be staying here again. read more

Here are the positives about the Inn: The location and value is what drew us to booking our room at the inn. Couple that with the pleasant reviews we read, we felt we made a solid decision for our mini 3-day vacation. The staff was very kind and friendly, the exterior of the hotel has been kept up and the grounds were clean. Even the beds were comfy (which for me was huge), TVs are updated and same with carpet. The pool was small, but cool and a great place to hang out after a day at the beach. If you arrive early, the staff will allow you to park w/out any hassle. Inn offers juice and coffee 24/7. There is even a sweet black cat that adopted the inn as his home. Here are the negatives: With the current state we are living in, we expected the hotel room to be cleaned. Thankfully we travel with cleaning supplies, Clorox all doors, tables, light switches, etc. the room likely has not had a deep clean in a while. We would have asked to be moved but the inn was booked. We had blood/coffee stains on the bedding (which the manager took care of immediately). The only outlets in the room that worked were those that had electronics/lighting plugged in. Unfortunately the outlet by the blow dryer was inoperable (reported to manager who apologized). And then, the door handle broke and we couldn't get out of our room / - : Manager attempted to fix it, which she did with tape b/c it required a 'special screw'. So the room itself, with the updated mattresses,TVs and carpet - there is still work that needs to be done. It's the beach, things get mold (lamp shades), tarnished (interior lighting fixtures), mini-fridges break (wood wedge to balance frig and the door didn't close all the way), door locks deteriorate (causing them to break), bathrooms need updating (think original 1980s). I understand all of these cost $$$ but charging $200 per night +/- one would like to believe that the owner could reinvest in some updates. Pool needs to be cleaned nightly - there is a ton of sand which is norm but it was perfect place to cool off after a long day on the beach. My wife and I have stayed at Hatteras Island Inn on several occasions over the past 10 years. We have always been satisfied with what this business has provided us as customers. However, it is greatly apparent that this hotel is under new management. Not sure if it's for the better. First there is a bulky kiosk the size of a refrigerator sitting in the lobby in front of the check in desk. It appears to serve as a de facto front desk clerk in the event that there is no one available to service anyone checking in. Although it may look efficient to the property owners it is actually very impersonal and off putting to those like us that intermittently visit the area. Second, one of the past perks of staying at the Inn was the availability of juice and coffee in the lobby. Not this time. There was a stack of linen and coffee packets where the juice machine and coffee makers used to be. Third. Where was the front desk clerk in the evening? When we went to the front desk to ask about when the pool opened, the clerk appeared on the screen on the before mentioned kiosk like big brother or a FaceTime call. It was very impersonal. Forth, the room we were put up in was the closest room to the street. You could hear every car, motorcycle, emergency and police vehicles as they passed as well as every person walking to the ice maker AND the noise it made while dispensing ice. Considering that the off season cost of staying has risen 50 dollars in 18 months we did not feel like we received a good value from this stay. The service was good, no complaints, tony is great. The water in the room smelled bad though i've gotta say... I will write a detailed review when I get home..... Ok I'm home and I have had an objective cool down time before writing this review. My wife and I checked into the Hatteras Island Inn for a last minute weekend stay in early August. My wife secured the reservation using the Priceline.com name your own rate feature. When we arrived at the hotel we where greeted by the front desk clerk who pulled our registration sheet from the box of expected arrivals. I was given the rate sheet to inspect and at the very top, in a hand written note and highlighted was "Priceline Customer"... and in the ensuing conversation the clerk kept referring to my wife and I as Priceline Customers. When he described our room and its location on the property he also referred to our Priceline rate. Being the sloppy clerk that he was I was able to see another rate sheet that was left open on the counter top and saw that the room was the same accommodations as mine except it was $20 more per night. So apparently, it is OK to alienate customers because they used a third party booking agency. Despite the fact that the hotel owners freely and of their own will decided to partner with the third party booking agency.....News flash!!! Once I check into your hotel I am not a "Priceline Customer", I am your hotel guest. Never mind that in the end, I was staying only 2 nights and the total discount was only going to be $40. Strike #1 Our assigned room was the last room on the first floor away from the main lobby on the pool side of the hotel. Things were notably bad as soon as we entered the room, the first thing we noticed was the thick wet air and the extremely heavy sent of deodorizer. The A/C was running and blowing cold but the air was still moist. There were two Full beds.....not Queens, Full! They sat on an unpainted unadorned pine 2x4 box. Above both beds there was a glass encased, matted print of some sort but on the matting there was what appeared to be spots of mold all over on both prints. The room by set up could sleep four people but there was only one chair in the whole room and its upholstery was tattered and torn. In the bathroom near the ceiling there was more evidence of what appeared to be mold. The wife and I agreed that we would not be staying in this room. Strike #2 We returned back to the front desk and told the clerk (same guy that checked us in) of what we had found. He did not even make the first protest or attempt to make any excuse or rationalization. He just took our keys back and issued us new keys, this time it was again at the end of the property, farthest from the front desk but on the opposite side of the building as the pool. If your a visual person it would be the room on the adjoining wall of the first room on the other side of the building. So guess what...it was slightly better but the same over all situation as the first room. In the second room I did not see any of the apparent mold evidence but there was a rusty wall lamp, rusty floor lamp, same wet heavy air, same heavy deodorizer smell, bubbled paint on the walls, same pine box bed frame, and same tattered ripped chair. Strike #3 So, not wanting to waste anymore of our weekend. The wife and I decided to stay in the second room, but not before I tore the beds apart and shook out the sheets in a thorough inspection. Surprisingly, I found what appeared to be brand new mattresses. They where not encased, but they did have a moisture proof pad between the mattress and the sheets. This was the worst hotel I have ever stayed in and I have stayed in many all over the world. If it was not for the fact that this was a short stay, and that I only needed a place to sleep I probably would have found a different place to stay and fought to get my money back later. I hope this review saves you some heart ache. P.S. Free Wi-Fi is only in the lobby and the rooms closest to the lobby. read more

I decided without much planning to do a road trip to the beach. When I realized that all of the campgrounds were closed this time of year, I got on Expedia and started looking for a cheap motel, and the rooms here were $59/night. Hell yea! So, I booked a room online and got to the hotel around 9 am. Even though check in time is 11, the very nice front desk clerk let me check in early at no extra charge (thankfully, I had been driving 10 hours!). The room was nice for being a $59 room. It was super close to the beach and lighthouse. I can't vouch for the TV or cable because I didn't turn it on. read more

Do not book a room here. Both management and ownership are unethical liars. I booked a room for my son and I for a fishing trip which was cancelled due to the weather. Brooke, the manager, provided us with a cancellation number to provide to Booking.com after telling us that she would contact Booking and give them authorization. Because it took so long we asked on at least three different occasions when we could expect a refund and were told by Brooke that she would email them - never happened. Finally when my wife called and asked to speak to the owner Rajesh, he refused to authorize the refund. I'm out $1200 thanks to these douche bags. read more

*Consumer beware* I stayed at the Hatteras Island Inn over the weekend on 7/5/19-7/7/19. We checked in early on 7/5/19, They charged us a $25.00 early check in fee, a bit ridiculous but whatever. The room was nice, clean and located on the end of the row. On 7/6/19 we went out exploring for the day, Once we came back to the room at 9 pm I noticed that I was missing 14 pills from a pill bottle. ( The only people to enter our room was housekeeping) The bottle was in a zipped bag inside of another bag. I immediately counted and recounted the pills. Still missing 14 pills. I went to the office and asked to speak with a manager. I explained to her that I was missing 14 pills, She seemed shocked at what I was telling her. She asked me to fill out an incident report and bring back to her the next morning. She stated that it was to late to call her staff that evening and would be in the next morning to address the situation. She assured me that she would be between 8-9 the next morning. On 7/7/19 around 9:15 we went to the office to check out. The manager was not on site and was not due on the property until 3pm. I asked the girl at the front what was being done about the incident. She was unaware and offered to call the manager. I spoke with the manger over the phone and she assured me that she would take care of the situation on 7/8/19 and call me. I asked for the owners contact information and left the property. I never received a call from the manager on 7/8/19. I called the owner and explained the situation to him, He said I will call the hotel and call you back. He did not call back. Finally on 7/9/19, The manager called me back and said I have spoken with the owner and we both agree that the hotel is not responsible for any damage or stolen items in our rooms or in your vehicles while on our property. We paid over $600.00 for 2 nights over a holiday weekend and someone came in our room and went through my bags and took my pills. This is the worst customer service I have ever received. I understand that its my word against theirs, However they could have apologized, offered a discounted rate, or refunded our money for the trouble. So if you book with them, DO NOT leave anything in your room that you don't want housekeeping to rifle through and possibly take. read more

It's not dirty, but it is in poor repair. The shower and sink had rust spots and the drain cover in the tub was loose. The bed had a distinct sag in the middle. Strangely, the towels were soft and not the scratchy kind you get at most discount hotels. While they do offer breakfast, it's pre-packaged and they offer no meat. The free wi-fi is only strong enough to work in the lobby. It is in a great spot with easy access to the beach and a few bars and restaurants. Stayed one night here traveling from morehead city to upper outer banks. For the price it's a great place to stay. 2 blocks walk to the beach, nice pool, really inexpensive, on the main road, not on the beach and people still expect a view? Silly. Room has that musty smell that all humid air area motels seem to have but bed was comfortable and the a/c worked excellently. Lots of places to eat and shop at within walking distance even in the heat. Nice pool with a rinse station outside to get all the sand off before going in the pool or back to your room. Frig was combo with freezer great for freezing a couple drinks to use as ice packs for your cooler then to drink when the others are gone. read more

We got a great deal on orbitz.com, only $40/night. So for that reason this place was worth the money. The couch, tv, curtains, carpet, ceiling, bathroom are all very dated. The bed was not firm but was comfortable, and the sheets seemed new. The staff was friendly and the location is very good. It's about a block to walk to the oceanfront, across a road/ parking lot that is in need of being replaced (broken/ slanted concrete everywhere). And once you arrive at the beach the homes are built very close to the water, maybe 75 ft... so there isn't much beach to enjoy... and there are fishing lines everywhere so is difficult to go for long walks without having to dodge the lines constantly. It's very close to the lighthouse and to the ferry entrance to Ocracoke island, which i would recommend. Ferry ride is free and we had a great time. Check out Hatteras Landing Marina shop while you wait for the ferry- lots of quality souvenirs/ t shirts at a good price. read more
