This store focuses on saltwater and has a small freshwater section. They tanks are kept crystal clear and I've heard they're going to expand their freshwater selection soon and am very excited for that! The fish that arrive are quarantined and they won't sell them to you till that's done. The prices justify the quality insurance they involve themselves in. I have had the choice to buy a fish cheaper from a chain store or from them and the choice is obvious. If you want a pet that'll not a gamble on health stacked against your favor, give Capital Aquariums a chance. It's a hidden gem for sure! read more

I started with Capitol Aquarium or whatever the name was back then in 2004 when Gregg was the owner. Over the years, I have watched this shop go through several different owners, and as the years went by their service got worse and worse. I was getting service monthly, but then they started not showing up at all. It's hard for me to clean my tank since it is wall mounted and very narrow, therefore all of my fish have since died. I'm not sure if I want to invest in a new tank, which is very costly, or I want to start back up with them again because of their lack of commitment. It is very costly to maintain a tank but when the tank isn't maintained you know what happens. I don't know if I would recommend this place or not because of how I have been treated over the years! read more

Went recently looking to get more RO water, to have my tank water tested, to have them check to see if my 2 nerites were still alive, to get betta food. And basically to check this place out, I've been wanting to visit for awhile now. Wound up being helped by Megan, who is the freshwater expert there. She hooked me up with pellet food for my betta, frozen food for my betta and bottom dwellers, and 2 amazing XL amanos (replaced my dead nerites with them). Megan is your gal if you need fresh water tank advice, she knows her stuff. I will be going back this weekend for another XL amano if they have them. Possibly another plant, we'll see. My only complaint is the hours, otherwise I love this place. It's worth the drive from Falls Church to talk to knowledgeable fish people and get my fish therapy on. read more

Small shop. Tanks were riddles with aptasia. Most of the fish were marked "sold" and not for sale. Several large softy colonies. Prices were higher than I expected. BTAs were marked at $150. When I walked in, two of the three women working were talking to a gentleman interested in purchasing a used aquarium and the third was doing chores. No one talked to me or even greeted me for the 15 minutes I was in there. Overall, decent variety of corals, but I wouldn't put anything from those tanks into mine. If they can't keep large pests out of their tanks, I wouldn't think to chance others. read more

We've been coming here since we moved here from Virginia Beach in 2017. Great selection and prices. They have coral frags starting at $5 dollars. Perfect for beginners or someone that just likes to watch them grown into coral colonies. They don't mark their corals up so high like other local fish stores. They are very knowledgeable and helpful. They give you a 10% discount if your a WAMAS member. Also, they're the only fish store that takes trades on livestock and corals for store credit. They don't give you full value since they have to stock them and resell them but it's pretty fair especially if you just need to free up room in your tank. I stopped by Capital Aquarium for the first time to pick up a few boxes of salt from a group buy that Zak was generous enough to host. My first thought was that the store is incredibly well-kept. The frag tanks are clean and tidy with a great variety of corals for purchase. They had a variety of saltwater and freshwater fish for sale, all of which appeared to be healthy and well-fed. The invertebrates were the same; plenty of hermits and snails of all types and sea hares as well. The stock of dry goods was a bit limited, but they do a great job with the available space. Manassas is a bit of a hike from DC, but I will be shopping at Capital Aquarium in the future. Furthermore, it's great to know that they are available to take care of my tank during long term travel. read more

This store has everything you need for your fresh or saltwater aquariums! I love this store! They have very reasonable prices and the staff is the absolute best! They have a wealth of knowledge to give new reefers! They aren't just going to sell you a fish or product just to push merchandise out of the door. They give you the break down on how something could be beneficial or detrimental to your tank! You can't go wrong with this store! I'm so happy that I found this store!
