An independent inspection confirmed the battery didn't meet spec and the car needed software updates -- clear pre-existing issues that should have been disclosed. This review is untimely, but I wanted to give credit where credit's due! I'd been keeping my eye out for an Audi for the past year or so. I've heard great things about Capital Motor Company from a few people and checked their website frequently. The vehicles I were interested in typically were "reserved" quickly, so on a nice day late August 2022, I made the drive from Saint Paul to Eau Claire to take a gander. Upon my arrival, I was greeted by Ben, who showed me several vehicles and answered all of my questions and looked up the ones he wasn't as familiar with. I've done my research, but it's always nice to see things in person and get someone else's opinion (and he was very forthright with his thoughts, both negative and positive). A loaded 2021 Volvo S60 T5 Momentum AWD was in stock and although I wasn't shopping for that brand, I took it for a test drive (along with a few others) and was stunned. Ben, a self-disclosed Audi owner himself, boasted about the quality of the three brands I expressed interest in (BMW, Audi and Range Rover) but showed me the outstanding qualities of Volvo and how their features met, and even exceeded, the specific ones I was seeking in an Audi. My current vehicle was fine and I was not in any rush to purchase something; I was just looking. After expressing interest for the Volvo I test drove, Ben and I discussed a trade-in or an outright purchase if I were to move forward with the switch. Ben made some calls to the owner, Joe, and I was offered a good trade-in offer for my existing vehicle (which was not one they'd typically sell there) and an outstanding price on the Volvo, should I choose to purchase it. I was fortunate to have options on whether or not to retain my potential trade-in, but decided to trade it in and purchase the Volvo. At no time did I ever feel pressured, all phone conversations were conducted in my presence and unlike purchasing other vehicles over the years; I never felt that "oh crap" feeling while proceeding with my transaction. As a Minnesota resident, I was a bit concerned about the title transfer process, as they are located in Wisconsin. Ben explained the process to me and transferring the title was a piece of cake. He said they do a lot of out of state business, which was evident. A few days after I had my Volvo, I noticed a small plastic component missing from the side of the driver' seat. It's unlikely that it was missing during the test drive and minimal days I drove it, as it was noticeably gone, but decided to call the dealership to see if maybe they found it in their parking lot or if it had come off while they were preparing it for delivery. I spoke with Steve, as Ben was off that day, and he told me that the owner was happy to order the part and have it mailed to me or arrange for it to be picked up at my local Volvo dealership. It was a very nice gesture and I took them up on it. I picked it up at my local dealership without any problems. If you are interested in a luxury or imported, pre-owned vehicle with all the bells and whistles, I strongly encourage you to take a gander at their website. Their inventory seems to go fast and I am so grateful for making the drive that day! An Audi may be in my future, but I cannot express how impressed I am with my Volvo and the more I learn about it, the more I am floored that they are not as "popular" as the aforementioned brands! The owner, Joe, followed up by phone a few days after the sale to make sure my experience was enjoyable and wanted to make sure I was satisfied with my purchase; which I certainly am! I feel confident with my decision in moving forward with my purchase and it's been a blast to drive in the snow! It handles better than my husband's Jeep!!! Thank you to Ben, Steve and Joe for the outstanding experience and I will definitely return when I am ready for my next whip! I Absolutely do not trust them now. I bought a beautiful car, had one oil change done and now I'm looking at a 10,000$ engine rebuild and 4 months without a vehicle. When I took it in for the first oil change, 2 places would not touch it, the third did as they specialize, however it was already messed up and needed repair, leak inside the engine, so it was 600$ total. Then, I found out my air is out, and now the oil problem has caused a HUGE problem. I would not send anyone here, nor would ever recommend. All these things supposedly passed the inspection. read more

First off, I purchased the vehicle regardless of no price negotiations. There was a problem with the battery, so they offered $200 initially to replace that. They ran the code reader in front of me and it showed no codes on anything. I was on my drive home and just in the first hour a check engine light came on and the car told me there has been service due to change the brake fluid since November of 2024, I purchased the car in August of 2025, so this was reset to not show on my test drive and wasn't done. The immediate check engine light issue along with the overdue maintenance on a vehicle with zero negotiation could borderline one star, but the only thing that gives it 2 stars is the $300 I ended up getting for the battery to buy an OEM one, even though the money discounted for the battery ended up having to go to the maintenance and check engine light and still wasn't enough for those. Very questionable car sale when considering the overdue service and check engine light coming on just during my drive home. They have a good European car selection for the area, but be careful before buying from them, and note there aren't negotiations at all along with questionable service history. read more

It's rare when you find such a great business like this. I flew out of state to hopefully buy a 2nd Porsche, and Steve was more knowledgeable about Porsche than even Porsche dealerships. Not only do they have a unique selection of really fun and interesting cars, but it's run by people who actually have a passion for the unique cars they sell. If you want to buy a car from a business that really knows unique cars inside and out, and who operates the business with integrity, definitely come here. I wanted a pre-buy inspection done as car mechanics are my forte. I took the car I was looking to purchase to Capital to have that done. I was told that issues were minimal & would need to be done but nothing that should stop me from buying the car. I went ahead and bought it. Less than a week later I take it in for an oil change and the mechanic tells/shows me that the air filter has most likely never been changed. Just after that it's acting up so I take it back in, both batteries are dead. Like I said I know very little about vehicles, but (I would think) the changing of an air filter and figuring out whether a battery is dead would be the first on a mechanics check-list or the most basic of things. I will never take my vehicle here and don't recommend that you do either. read more

I went into the purchase of my new to me car excited. By the next day I was quite upset. Be sure to do your own inspection upon arrival because I don't think I one was even done on this car. Small things bugged me at first like no valve cover stems, remote in key fob was in need of changing but turns out the module that detects key fob needs to be replaced, no floor mats. When I got home I checked tire pressures 55, 42, 36, and 32. Bigger issues include: rims were trashed, was never talked about prior or depicted in any of the photographs. Blind spot alert continuously flashes. Brake pads and rotors are completely shot but I was told they passed inspection even though the front pads only contact the very inner and outer edge of rotor and rotors themselves are toast. Rear strut rattles every time you hit a bump. Figured that a higher end used vehicle dealership that seems to sell a lot of vehicles would be a little more interested in not just first impressions of car but also making sure the mechanical bits were all worked out. read more

I went to there website to put in for a work order to work on my car after I had called them to have my car towed there for them to make a key for my Volvo which they said they could do, when you make a work order there they call you back to confirm it and well it took them 3 weeks to respond and then when they finally called me back saying they couldn't do it they said they haven't been able to do that key for months and said that it is my issue that they couldn't do it because I didn't get in contact with them months earlier when I didn't even have the car yet read more

My brother bought an 2008 Acura RDX from Capital Motors in February of 2018. Ad was on Craigslist but when we showed up only the "marketing manager" was working that day. Had very limited Info on the car, and very limited pull when it came to additions or fixes on the minor issues. There was no second key and claimed there was a "clean record". Here we are a year and a half later 3000$ put into the car and for my mechanic to tell me someone took out the air conditioning compressor and replaced it with a bypass. I am not a car expert but there is no reason this company CAPITAL MOTORS should claim this car was checked and Double checked by mechanics on hand and I turn around a year later to find a missing essential piece to the car. They even took 2 months to send me the correct plates from WI to MN. Just want to warn anyone else before they do business with a poor Company. read more

This has been a long and stressful ordeal. Total manipulation and dishonesty. My first car purchase and they saw me a mile away. Lied on the Buyers Guide, car stalled repeatedly within first 24 hours. Inspection revealed over $2000 repairs needed including leak in power steering. He asked me to return the car to him which I had towed 2 hours to his location. It sat for 2 weeks and he didn't repair the problems. But left me with a cracked windshield which I had to have repaired. Then he demanded I pick up the car or he will report it abandoned on his property. Because of his verbal abuse, I filed a police report and I had the police accompany me when I picked up the car. This person has serious anger issues and called me vile names and made sexist remarks. I previously left a review but agreed to remove it in exchange for a cancellation of sale. Never happened because the owner Joe Swearingen demanded I sign an agreement stating I would never speak of the transaction, never report him or leave negative feedback. If I did, I would agree to pay him $1500 per incident. I didn't agree. I did however report him to the DMV Invest. The use of verbal abuse/bullying is shocking. He will deny this but I have evidence to support my feedback. If you had a bad experience with this dealership, please file a report with WI DMV under dealership reports/investigations.
