The middle aged lady, former school teacher, told me more history than you can read in the books about the area, how it's changed since she moved there in the 60's as a young hippie. She was as entertaining as the exhibits. What were the most interesting was the information on early skiing and climbing, and, the old Ice Castle. Allegedly, many years ago, one of their tourist attractions was an absolutely enormous ice castle, complete with turrets, the whole nine yards. It brought many visitors around. As you can imagine with today's safety standards and insurance, eventually it was no more, (maybe it was discontinued in the 1940's?), but the pictures are wonderful to look at. The fee to get in was quite small, maybe $5. Nice, but small selection of good history books too.

The museum is well laid out and you take it in at your own pace. I expect most people would want to spend 1-2 hours here. I particularly enjoyed reading about the first discovery of gold near Idaho Springs and what lead to the Gold rush. I also enjoyed seeing how mining techniques evolved over a short period to reveal and extract even more and more precious minerals. I learned about florescent rocks. On the top level are the hall of fame members who made significant contributions to mining, like John Wesley Powell, US Army officer, Grand Canyon explorer, professor and of course geologist; and Ed Schieffelin, who discovered silver and founded the town of Tombstone, Az, which at the turn of the last century was the largest town west of the Mississippi River.

He took our family pictures throughout the day to help save the memories. He drove us to our 3 hour train ride, captured pictures of us on the train, and then took us to the hot springs. The train ride is beautiful and relaxing. He then drive us to Vail for the evening to enjoy dinner and shopping before taking us back to our hotel. He made a special gift for everyone in our group and was delightful to visit with. You can tell how much he loves what he does and wants to make sure that you have a special trip.

With Denver enjoying a pretty decent heat wave, the BF suggested a trip up to Breckenridge, between the 30 degree drop in temperature and a great road trip, we couldn't resist. To our surprise there was an Art Festival in Breckenridge this weekend. It's a bit different then the one in Cherry Creek. A lot less crowded and I would say and more modern art if you ask me. Not as big as Cherry Creek, in my opinion I think the Breckenridge Art Festival is the perfect size. My Mom even found some art she decided to buy for her house back home. I fell in love with some great photography there as well and would love to buy some in the coming years for my house. With the weather being cooler and the crowds being easier to migrate through, the Breckenridge Art Festival is the better choice in CO. And if you don't find any art, there are a million cute boutiques to shop at as well.

It's grown quite a bit in the last few years and seems to attract artists that don't necessarily frequent the other festivals. Even if something isn't my taste, most of the art here is at least interesting to look at. The past couple of years, I've found items to take home. This year I bought a couple of pottery pieces at fantastic prices (I got a collector discount since I've purchased from that artist a few times before) and I spent out of my comfort zone to get an amazing mixed media piece that I absolutely fell in love with. If you like art and you like escaping to the mountains during the hot summer, I'd highly recommend this festival. Look for it on a weekend around July 4th each year.

It was the most breathtaking and adventurous rock crawling we've ever done. Jon was incredibly knowledgeable about the terrain and surroundings, teaching us a lot about the land and its history. He allowed us to immerse ourselves in nature with quiet moments to enjoy the ride and scenery. We drove a raised Jeep along a deserted road, and in the four hours, we didn't see a single person.
