I've been going to see this barber for the best flattops in the city for several years until COVID hit in 2020. During COVID, I started shaving my head myself. I kept doing it after COVID for the convenience. Well, in August of 2025 I decided I wanted to let my hair grow out a little. So after 6 months, I decided that I needed to go have it shaped up a bit. I went to see my barber (Oscar) and he gave me a nice haircut to get everything shaped up right so my hair would grow right and look better. I was not disappointed. My barber (Oscar) can give you any kind of haircut you want. From a trim/shaping, a fade, gentleman's cut, flattop, etc... you name it, he's the best. The barbershop is modern, very clean with a great vibe. Everyone (other barbers) are so welcoming and friendly. They let you know, that they appreciate your business and coming into their barbershop...Even though they may have not been the barber cutting your hair. It's a very enjoyable experience and atmosphere. I highly recommend you give them a try next time you need a great haircut. read more

My father has been following Oscar for well over 20+ years! Oscar is now taking our families 3rd generation of haircuts. Customer service is always above and beyond from everyone in the shop. They have good Barbers BUT you have to make a appointment or your just a no body, even though they say walk-in's are welcomed they still kick you to the curb , Costomer service it's not a priority here , unless you make the LIST. Okay place to get a great cut. MUST MAKE APPOINTMENT. Both times I come in as a walk in at dead hours, I end up waiting 2-3 hours before someone even talks to me. Its good when you have a steady barber but if your normal guy is out then you are SOL. Dont recommend. Never coming again. My entire experience was soiled due to a foul odor of customers that smelled of weed. The barbers are nice and friendly but is a complete waste of time if again NO APPOINTMENT. But here's the kicker, no same day appointments. So you can test your luck, which hasn't left me happy either times or schedule an entire day out of getting a hair cut. read more

Best Cut Ever!!! I made an appointment at 11:30, personal issues happened and we didn't show up until 12:00, they showed no disrespect, no worries and got me right in. I have 2 tips for customers. The first one being, you must ask for Nando! I'm sure all the barbers are great but, Nando dedicates his time to each client in personalizing his skill, artfully with each cut. I've been getting my haircut here since they first opened on 1st Street. Now they are closer to my house on Manchaca. I recommend all my friends to come here. Everyone is good, but I refer them to Alex because he has been cutting my hair since I first walked in the door. I have never been disappointed here. Had people cut in line numerous times, they were not even in the shop and got taken before me, even after I protested. 3. Long lines and barbers decide it's a good time for a break. 4. Short Skinny: Where a MAN goes to get his haircut. By men. Old school barbershop with rockabilly vibe. (This is the Justin Street location.) My buddy said, "I found the barbershop you need to go to. It's got a rockabilly vibe and they finish up your cut with a straight razor." I said, "That sounds pretty cool to me." I dropped in for the first time today. My friend was right. Even more than right, he was Right On. You see, I've been been getting my haircut at a place near my house. It's one of those strip mall joints filled with bored beauty school gals. They take to my head with clippers set on "one." Zip. Zip. Zip. Done. $16. At Capitol City Barbershop you kick your feet up into old school barber chairs, have a smock thrown around your neck, and the experience begins. Juan pulled out the clippers. "Set it on half," I said. His actions were deliberate and precise. After getting the primary areas trimmed he said, "How do you want the the neck? Blocked? Natural? Faded?" Faded? On a "clippers on half" cut (my hair's not an 1/8th of an inch long)?! "Fade it," I said. Then came the clean up--around the edges and the back of the neck. This is done with a straight razor. Then a hot towel. Then a balm. I left smelling, feeling, and looking more like a man than when I stepped into the place. The price for that level of attention to detail and care? $12. That's highway robbery my friends. $12 for the best haircut I've had in a decade, maybe my entire life? (I've paid twice that much for half as less.) In short: Men. Go. The combination of my shaggy head and the rising heat sent me on a mission to get a haircut today. I've been a patron of chain salons for years like Great Clips or Supercuts, but since everything else is done differently in Austin I decided to experiment with local based shops instead. This mission led me to Capitol City Barbershop. After browsing a few places on Yelp (some of which offered beer!), I landed on Capitol City (Slaughter Road location) because of its great reviews and proximity to my house. There was hardly any wait at all on a mid Saturday afternoon, despite the many reviews otherwise. The atmosphere is retro 1950s kind of feel with checkered tile floors, neon signs, old movie posters, and Patsy Cline records on the wall. My barber was Oscar, and he did a fantastic job on the haircut. He was thorough and fast, and the added bonus of a straight razor shave and hot towel was a first time experience for me. They only take cash, but have an ATM in-store. It was a few dollars more ($18) than I had spent at the chain salons in the past, but worth it for the service, atmosphere and the shave. read more

I just want give this place props. I have gone to many barber shops and haircut places looking for barbers who know what they are doing and take pride in their work. I have had my haircut a few times by different barbers, Johnny, Oscar and most recently by the newest barber, Nando. All great barbers and very skilled and most definitely take pride in what they do, making you look good! This place has a lively but chill vibe, with the televisions on sports and the conversations going back and forth about everything you can think of. It's the kind of barbershop you would see in movies, just real people having real conversations and sometimes talking mess!(These guys are the REAL DEAL Dallas Cowboys/Longhorns fans) just make sure you show some respect!! Hahahaha Just want to give a shot out to Nando, who killed it on my haircut this most recent time. He delivered what I requested. He was chill/talkative and attentive, took his time with my hair and really took pride in his work. Unprofessional barbershop. I was here twice. Both times, got stood up with my appointment by Nando (one of the barbers). I should've known the first time after he took two or three people before me even though I was scheduled. His excuse was that he was backed up but I found out he booked 2 other people for my time slot. nando apologized and said if I made an appointment next time, the max wait would be 5 mins after the appointment. Fast forward to my second time there. I gave the barbershop the benefit of the doubt and scheduled another appointment. I arrived on time and found someone in the chair and he just got started. I was pretty upset now. It took him about 30 minutes to finish the other customers haircut. Now we are about 30 minutes past my scheduled appointment. As that customer gets up, I'm thinking I will be next. However, that was not the case. He had another customer sit in his chair and that was when I mentioned to him that I have an appointment about 30 minutes ago. I then found out that he scheduled the other person at the same time as me but he did not care that I had waited two hours the last time because of the same problem. All Nando said was "my bad I'll get you next". What a waste of time. If he would've just scheduled me properly I wouldn't have wasted my time just sitting there and waited. I would definitely not be returning as this service is poor. Twice in a row. No thanks. Worst customer service. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME. DO NOT RECOMMEND. read more

We just moved to Austin. Saw this place is open until 7pm and has good reviews so I brought my husband here. Not friendly at all. Not even greeted or placed on a list. Figured they knew the order of folks coming in. We waited at least 20 minutes and one barber was cleaning his area. As a second on finished with his customer he announced, "this is the last one." There were at least 3 others ahead of us. It would have been nice to know as we walked in that they were closing shop early. Went to the next barber shop with better reviews. Don't go if you need a haircut. What you will see-- barbers prioritizing everything but the haircut. Texting, shopping online, and just a total lack of concentration on the person in the chair. You could tell they come and go as they please and don't have a set schedule. Last... The place is dirty as hell. I asked for a medium fade and my barber gave me a high fade. This was after I pointed on my head where I wanted the fade to stop. Also there was a gay guy there at the shop and when he left, they started making fun of him and calling him "sweet". So they can't cut hair and they're homophobes. Plus the shop was pretty dirty. Very dissatisfied. Had been to the Capitol City Barbershop previously, and admittedly the experience was good. But, on this day they totally pissed me off. I had been waiting for over an hour to get my hair cut, which by itself is not very good. But then to make matters worse, a guy comes in, announces that he has been waiting in his car (YEAH RIGHT) and is taken IN FRONT OF ME. This is like the middle school lunch line all over again. Don't suppose that it was any coincidence that the customer was Hispanic, and that the two barbers in question were also both Hispanic. I will not be going back here again. Absolutely the best place for guys and young boys! There is a sense of nostalgia the minute you walk in, and you feel right at home immediately!! Jeff, the owner, is one cool guy and one of the most pleasant people I have ever met! I have taken my son in there twice now, and he walked out today and said "that was cool". He was treated like a special patron, and he enjoyed the great attention given to him. He was even fortunate enough to have his cowboy boots shined. That too was a neat experience for him. There is even a young boy roaming around sweeping, making sure the hot towels are ready, and just doing odd jobs. It was neat to see. While you wait, you can even enjoy a nice cold beverage from the Coca Cola cooler. The place is very nicely decorated and very clean! I really have enjoyed myself both times I have taken my son there. You can go in relax, have a nice conversation with other patrons or the barbers, and just have some time in which you are not rushed. This is not your run of the mill Cost Cutters; this place is just the opposite on every level. The prices are a bit more than Cost Cutters and other chain places, but they are well worth it. You get a personal touch with extras such as a razor shave, hot towels, and so on. You will not find that at Cost Cutters! This is a local guy who has a passion, so take advantage of this neat place and give it a try! You will not regret it! This is a nice change of pace from the otherwise rat race we all lead. Note, it's cash only, but they do have an ATM inside in case you forget.
