I had an absolutely terrible experience with this barber. From the moment I sat down, it felt like he was more focused on rushing me out of the chair than actually giving me a decent haircut. Before starting, I showed him photos of exactly what I wanted: a clean high bald fade. I even told him it was totally fine if he didn't want to take it all the way down to the skin if he didn't have the right tools. Instead of listening, he rushed through the entire cut and then had the nerve to tell me, "This is what you get in 30 minutes." At one point he literally showed me a timer he had set for 30 minutes like that somehow justified the quality of the haircut. Then he said if I wanted a better blend I should have booked a beard trim too, which honestly felt like a cheap upsell after already paying a ridiculously high price for the haircut itself. The result? An absolutely terrible fade with harsh lines and almost no blending. It looks nothing like the photos I showed him. For the price he charges, I expected professionalism and basic attention to detail, not to be rushed through like I was on an assembly line. To make matters worse, when he used a straight razor on the back of my neck, he actually cut me multiple times. I left with small nicks and irritation back there, which is completely unacceptable. A straight razor should be used with care, not rushed like everything else during the appointment. I walked out feeling like I had been robbed and honestly embarrassed by how bad the haircut looks. If you value your money and don't want to leave looking like an idiot with a butchered fade--and possibly with cuts on your neck--I would strongly recommend going somewhere else. read more

I've been so accustomed to highly skilled barbers where I live and I have been spoiled. Wanted to check out the talent in Austin since I was not going to be able to go to my regular barbers. Fatal mistake on my part. The barber is polite, but I expected more from the astronomical price for this haircut. I can only compare it to paying for premium gas, but with the lowest octane. The barber is unable to blend or do a fade haircut in any shape or form. If one is looking for a standard haircut with scissors only, this might be a place for you. Gave him a card outlining what I wanted (written by prev barber). He gives a mediocre cut, asks if it looks good, I say it doesn't seem right. I thought it needed to look more "square" and less round, but he took off too much already so he tried to "clean it up" which did next to nothing. Haircut was not blended at all and it is not even symmetric. When I arrived he also was laying on the couch, probably just woke up from a nap. He also was drinking from something the entire time and burping which was weird. And conversation was stagnant, no music, dreadful silence. Ok, so, before you judge fully based on a few of these negative reviews, let me tell you about my long term experience. I've been coming to see Nick for about a year and a half. I found him initially on Yelp, and got a great cut at the right price, something you'll see echo'd in a lot of reviews. Unlike most barbers in Austin who rent a booth, Nick is truly an entrepreneur at heart and wanted to start his own business. He rented a dumpy house off S. 1st with a lot of potential and put in the sweat equity to remodel a lot of it, including the yard (keep in mind this was a rental, but he had a vision and a plan.) While cutting he would talk about dreams of revitalizing the surrounding areas, building up the neighborhood into a true outdoor venue with buy-in from neighbors, and somehow contributing in an extremely positive way to the community he now called home. Along the way, the stress and pressure of working two years straight without a break took a toll. I saw it. Others saw it. Many first timers swore him off for good. While I never experienced a missed appointment, you could tell the situation was deteriorating. Any of you who have run a business by yourself know what this can feel like. The one constant was that the quality of the haircuts and beard trims never faltered, but something had to change. As of mid-June, Nick now cuts permanently out of Shear Madness on W. 6th. He doesn't have any of the old distractions or stresses, and honestly, when I walked in to see him it was like meeting Nick Geiser for the first time. He was calm, cool, collected, and is clearly fully focused on doing what he does best, which is give bad ass haircuts and beard trims. If you want a top notch cut from a master barber, Nick is your guy. The old days are clearly behind him, and a lot of us who have known him through the good and not so good are still loyal for a reason. This is not a legitimate business, maybe it was at some point, but it's not anymore. Minutes before my first appointment, as I was arriving at the boarded up building on Annie St, the barber called to say he lost his lease and was cutting out of an Airbnb. He said he'd text the address. Strange, but not unheard of. I'd previously gone to a guy with a chair in his house, so I missed this warning sign. After about 10 minutes of not hearing from him I called the number on the appointment confirmation email, which gets forwarded to someone in the Austin Police Department. After more than an hour he finally texted the address, saying that his phone had died and asked if I was still interested. I did not feel like getting murdered that day, so politely declined. If you look at reviews something changed, maybe a year ago, and it's been 1 Star ever since. Under no circumstances should you try to get a cut from this guy. read more

I've finally found a good barber in Austin!! This guy is as legit as it gets. He rents a chair out of a salon space, so it's not incredibly easy to find, but well worth it. He's building a name and a brand for himself. He's a respectable dude, great with people, and pays close attention to detail. My hair was exactly what I wanted, and I will definitely be back next month to get a little more trimmed (working on growing into a new hairstyle). I've been going to Nick since right after he opened 3 yrs ago and he's the only one I'll let mess with my hair or beard since. He actually has parking unlike a lot of places in the SoCo area. He knows his stuff. He asks me what I want to do, and I just tell him to do his thing and it comes out perfect every time. He has easy scheduling online.. very cool old school atmosphere in his shop. He's great with conversation and ensuring your comfort while you're in the chair. Another great thing is how personal this business feels. In town from Houston for business at the Capitol and found Geiser online. The barbershop is a one-man operation in an old house in Bouldin. Had a great haircut, neck shave, and beard trim with Nick. He took a lot of time to communicate with me when I arrived, walking me through each of the steps he was going to take in the haircut and shave, and let me know my options at each stage and how they would end up looking. Because he explained all this so well I was able to change a few things in my regular haircut and I will continue getting it cut this way for a while back in Houston, so thanks for that Nick. He was also able to explain and suggest a few changes to cutting my beard that I will continue to do at home. I was out exactly on time. If I lived here Nick would be my barber for sure. read more

So I came here for a beard trim. I told him that I wanted to keep the length because I'm trying to grow it out. I asked him to just clean it up a bit. I was excited at first because he appeared knowledgeable about what he was going to do. After a bit of small talk, he asked if it was alright if he drank a glass of whiskey (Sure. It's a Friday). He then started taking my cheek lines much lower than their natural state. He then started to comb my mustache sideways (not quite handlebar) to blend in with my newly lowered cheek lines. Because the right side of my mustache connects better than the left, he didn't bother trimming the left side that much. He stated that the left side "would get mad at the right side and start to grow out due to jealously." After realizing that too much was taken off, all I could do was sit in the chair and think about how I'm likely going to go straight home to clean shave the whole thing. At one point, he told me that I shouldn't worry about anything else and just focus on the left side of my mustache so it will grow out faster (I wonder if that applies to all aspects of hair... Perhaps I should focus on my hairline to prevent it from receding?). After his next appointment showed up on time, he quickly rushed the rest of my shave. I had to go home and shave over his "straight-razor shave" because stray hairs were everywhere. Sorry for the harsh review Nick, but you're charging premium prices for a lackluster (at-best) job. I spent $30 to trim a beard that I'll likely shave by tomorrow. read more

Got a decent haircut from the first time after waiting for him to smoke a cig outside and make himself coffee. Ended up taking 2 hours. Round 2 I scheduled a week in advance; directly texts me the day of for a 10am appointment and asks me if we can move to 2:30. I say that's fine. I show up at 2:30. No nick. Called and texted him; still no word from him a week later. Showed up for nothing. Heard a lot of his clients have gotten this experience lately. Not showing up for an appointment you rescheduled or even having the decency of giving a call or email is why I won't be coming back. read more

If you want a barber who is going to take his time and focus on the details when giving you a hair cut then this is the place. The attention provided to each customer is second to none and the price is in line with competition so you're not paying a premium price for the premium customer service. When I went in for a hair cut I needed the sides cut to a size 2 and blended to the top. I wanted the top textured but not cut in length and I wanted the back faded into the rest of my hair. My hair was cut exactly how I wanted and I received plenty of complements after having it cut. I highly recommend this place and will definitely be coming back. There's a lot of 5 star reviews here so maybe Nick and my hair just don't go together. The place is in a cool spot with other independent barbers/hair stylists. Nick is a nice guy but in haircutting skills, I wasn't too impressed. He uses clipper guards which I consider a sign of someone not as skilled. I asked him not to cut too much off the top (which is a vague instruction admittedly) but he cut a lot off. In addition, the wasn't a clean fade between the sides of my hair to the top, kinda feel like I've got a mushroom on my head now. He's a lot more rough with a straight razor than my typical preference along the neckline. For $30, I expect amazing. I got passable. read more

You might notice that there's a bit of a trend here. Like everyone else, I followed Nick from a few other locations. You don't get this kind of loyalty unless you're good at what you do. What's great is that everything about his own endeavor here is better than the past, larger places he was a part of. His website is mobile-friendly, easy to navigate and online appointments go straight to your calendar. The space itself is nice, clean, quaint and has free parking in the back. Most importantly though, the cuts are as high quality as they ever were, which is the main reason you see all of these five star reviews. He also has good bedside manner, or whatever the barber equivalent to bedside manner is. Chair-behind manner? I dunno, I guess it's just conversing. Whatever it is, he can do it. Bottom line is that if you're tired of going to places where it's a crap shoot on who you might get to cut your hair or how long you might have to wait in line, give Nick a shot and there's a good chance you'll be writing your own five-star review in the near future. read more

100% The best haircut I've ever gotten. Literally every hair was accounted for. Not a single hair out of place. I've been looking for a new barber for a while now since my previous barber moved to Mexico and I can't imagine going anywhere other than here. I have been going to Nick for nearly 2 years now every two weeks or so...and couldn't be happier. From the first time I went to Nick I have been getting compliments on both my beard and hair. His prices are fair and service is always on time. I can't say enough good things about the experience. When he firsts starts cutting your hair he will make sure to ask all of the questions necessary to make sure that you are getting things done the way you want them, and have no surprises by the end of the cut. After the first few times I can confidently walk in and say "the usual" and he never skips a beat. Everything is booked in 30min increments and priced accordingly, with the exception of the $5 beard "trim" which will be a short addendum to your haircut. While I haven't gotten a full shave from him, the partial shaves and edgings that I have had done are always done with great care and skill. I followed him to his new location here off Annie St and am so happy that he is making his business work. My only hesitancy about his business getting more popular is that it will be harder to get a time in with him! read more

Had my hair cut here 3 times, very satisfied each time. The first time I came here, he noticed I was parting my hair on the wrong side, somehow no other stylist ever said anything about that. Nick is good at conversation and will make you feel comfortable. When I got my hair cut the third time, there was a 2 month gap, but he still remembered details about our previous conversation. Impressive and personable. I make the drive from north Austin to see him and I feel it is worth the drive + $30 for a haircut you won't regret. I've finally found a barber I can be happy with for life! I, like probably many of you, have gone from barber to barber; shop to shop most of my life. Generally accepting an ok haircut if I could find one was the best I could hope for. Looking back I don't think I ever got it absolutely perfect until I started getting cut by Nick Geiser. Not only have I received the most perfect haircuts in my life. But I've been provided an attention to detail and a keen mind for engaging in any conversation that keeps me with this barber. I've actually been a client now through a couple different phases in this barber's career and even though I thought my haircuts couldn't get any better, Nick has gotten use to my head and the grain of my hair in such a way that it somehow keeps getting better! I like my tapers down to the skin and Nick cuts them clean with no lines whatsoever; just a perfectly gradual descent all the way to the skin where he edges me up with a straight razor. I would highly recommend this barber for anyone passing through or anyone in town looking for a permanent barber.
