I have been going to this same shop for my last 3 haircuts. I like to walk in and check out different stylists. My first two cuts happened to be the same stylist and she was outstanding. Great service and a beautiful cut. This last service was a new male stylist. He said he has thirteen years of experience and everything seemed to go fairly well. I had him clean up a few areas I could see right away, but when I got home to shower after my cut, I was drying my hair and I could tell the length of my hair on top was multiple lengths. When I dried it and looked in the mirror, it looked as if someone cut my hair with a weed wacker. It had blotches of longer hair and troops where it was cut closer to my scalp. I have never in my life had to go back into a shop to fix a bad haircut. I often said to my stylist, the difference between a bad haircut and a good one is about week because my hair grows back so fast. This wasn't a bad haircut, it was a malicious attempt to make it bad. I don't know why he would have allowed me to walk out with this haircut. It really was that bad. I have been to numerous beauty colleges where they were being taught how to give a haircut. None came close to how bad this one was when I had left the shop. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I did go back into the shop early the next morning, today, and they assured me they would take care of my service and fix the problem.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The real problem is, I feel this was done maliciously. I have mixed feelings about this establishment as the vast majority of their stylists are excellent, but management needs to do a beef job of passing on the poorly trained stylist or those willing to give this shop a bad name. One of the worst experiences in a barber shop. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Charles was polite but very socially awkward and unaware.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]He began with asking why I was there. Ok odd but I explained my apt was for a haircut. He seemed confused.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]A few moments later a younger woman came to the counter and assisted w checking me in.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Charles was uncomfortably close to my face, he was breathing heavy & was making odd breathing noises through his mouth & nose. Almost like a slurping sound.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] For a few minutes I actually looked around for cameras in anticipation I was being "punk'd" Charles cut my hair uneven- there's a 1" difference in length from side to side. He trimmed my mustache and it was so off, I looked like I had a fat lip. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I asked him not to continue and respectfully said he was making me nervous. He continues anyway and said "give me another chance at redemption " which was when he got within 4-6" of my face with his face and was attempting to straighten out my now crooked mustache.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I pointed out he only trimmed & lined up my left side but not my right. He acknowledged but continued to take off the cover. I again pointed out the difference. He noticed and "fixed " the right side which was untouched til this point. Ummm... so we were unaware that they aren't allowed to trim beards/facial hair. Online it lets you book for all their services, so I booked my husband for a beard trim and the fade. When he sat down the barber told him he had to wear his mask the whole time, so we asked how they would trim the beard and they told us "we don't". So obviously we were pretty much left with no options so we had to leave without getting any services. Also we were early and they began the appointment 10min late. Had to come back here and go from 4 stars to 1 because once we got home my husband looked at his emails and Finley's charged him a NO SHOW FEE. ?! We were there for the appointment! Used to love this place. Had a wonderful stylist who took the time to get to know me, my hair, and my style. Hell, i even bought fresh cuts and shaves for me and my groomsmen the morning of my wedding from this great group in '18. However, times changed. My stylist moved on, my new stylist i was matched with (a nice touch from my stylist who moved away) stayed only a few additional months before leaving, and prices continued to hike. For whatever reason unbeknownst to the consumers, they just can't keep stylists really long term. If you are good with the fly by night stylist and switching every 5 months, roll on. Maybe my old soul just isn't made for a place like this anymore. The beer is a nice touch, but that seems to be the norm at a lot of places now so.. is that truly a unique selling point anymore? Wish Finleys the best, but I'm going where my stylist will be around for a bit and the revolving door is non existent, and my cuts stay the same price longer than 5 months. I got a couple hair cuts here years back, and they were pretty good. I have seen a pretty consistent decline in the quality of the cuts here over the past few years though. Recently I took my son here for a cut and walked out $40 dollars lighter with a $12 super-cuts cut. Chili bowl line around his head, dumb and dumber blocked off bangs, alfalfa spike in the back, the works. I even raised a couple of these issues with the stylist and was assured it was fine, and "just laying that way because its wet." Nope, terrible cut. My husband and I have have been here 3 times. They gave him a great cut the first time, and we wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt the next 2 times, but the last cut was SO bad, he had to shave his head before our honeymoon. The stylist said it was "just sad" that his last stylist hadn't told him he couldn't get a certain look without product...but they were his last stylist. They were in such a hurry that his hairline wasn't even CLOSE to even; he had to return to get all of his gorgeous, curly hair shaved off. Very disappointed, but know y'all are capable of better. I had been (for over five years) getting my hair cut by Kirby the Barber downtown, and appreciated the careful barbering he did and hjs attention to detail. His shop closed with the pandemic, and I needed a haircut, so I thought I'd try Finley's. It's always a dice-roll when you try a new barber, but I got a Yahtzee when I picked Flight Bailey online for a cut at Finley's S. Lamar location. This is my second time to go to Finley's (and second time with Flight), and my experience gets better each time! Close to home, open on weekends, and great prices for really good haircuts - what's not to like? Greetings from Southern California. I visited Finley's on South Lamar whilst travelling and getting ready for a wedding in Austin, so I wanted to look as killer as my ugly mug can look. Overall: Finley's is a decent place, but I agree with reviewer Jos A. that they charge too much for the service and quality. See below for details. Recommendation for a better experience: Call in and talk to the staff rather than book online for your first appointment, unless what you want exactly is identical to what's printed on the website. Make sure to read the description of services thoroughly or you may end up wasting some time and money like I did. Details: Like reviewer Jos A, I came in and got a service and then didn't realize that one part of what I wanted required a barber instead of a cosmetologist, and so I had to come in the following day and get that additional service, which set me back a whole extra $40+ dollars after paying $20+ already. Specifically, I got a beard trim the first day. I thought that this included shaping/shaving around my beard after trimming, because the trimmer left a bunch of stubble I wanted gone. Well, to get a close shave _around_ your beard, you need a barber, and you need the "beard shave," not the "beard trim." A little confusing to me. So my beard was conditioned twice in two days (I was willing to skip the conditioning the second day, but didn't indicate before it was too late) and finally I got it shaved down and shaped nicely. Quality or lack thereof: Except that the shave, with a straight razor, was not as close as I can do with my safety razor at home. And my neck looked like it had been attacked by a swarm of mosquitoes, it was redder than I would get if I had just shaved myself. I don't pay a professional to do a worse job than I could do on my own and I expect a straight razor shave to be the gold standard of shaving in terms of closeness and lack of irritation. So, not cool. After the beard trim I scheduled the shave over the phone and requested a discount for my redundant service to happen on the next day. When I came to pay on the second day, the person at the cash register said there was no record of a promised discount. So, I was lied to. They ended up giving a much smaller discount than I was told over the phone. Yes, I made a mistake and should have clarified what service I would receive on the first day to clear any ambiguity before scheduling. However, they block the services so you can't get your beard trimmed and shaped/shaved around in the same procedure without spending an exorbitant amount of money (more than $60). Positives/customer service: The staff are pretty chill and the barber communicated well, had a good sense of beard aesthetics and was entertaining and made me feel comfortable for my first beard shave. read more

The worst place I've ever worked at. The work environment was toxic, the management not only had their favorites but didn't know how to separate social life from work life. They treat you like a machine, God forbid a family emergency comes up , they think their company is more important. I felt like I was still in high school , with their little cliques and bullying, I actually witnessed management bullying and speaking inappropriately to another employee. The rules don't apply to everyone, just the people that management isn't friends with. If you're looking for a drama free environment, Don't apply there. I worked at S lamar. Also how do they terminate someone for not being able to fulfill their schedule, due to excused medical or family emergencies but keep someone employed who smokes weed in the breakroom? If you're not part of their clique, they don't like you. Very unprofessional for a place with outrageous prices. How can you expect professionalism from an owner who curses at his employees? I was super excited about this place, but unfortunately left completely disappointed. While the shop is aesthetically pleasing, and the service inittially friendly, I could have gotten a better hair cut at Super Cuts. My barber seemed pretty detailed while working on my hair, and I was pleased withwhat I could see of the cut. I didn't think to question what the back of my head looked like, but when I left the establishment I was in for a rude awakening. The back of my head had a huge chunk of hair missing. It was a gaping hole right where there should have been hair. I returned back to see my barber to address the issue. Rather than take ownership of the very obvious mistake, she, and several other barbers began to tell me I was simply balding. I have never had an issue with balding, or even thinning, so I knew it was simply a cop-out to avoid ownership of the botch job. Management here is really top notch. I had a regrettable experience at the burnet location and (because the burnet location would not even hear me out when I called back) Raven and the desk folks at south Lamar went above and beyond to salvage the damage. For guy that is admittedly hard to allay, I was really pleased how they handled my issue.
