My experience with Ali and Diana was frustrating. When they came to my house, Ali tried to talk over me. When he tried to explain his ideas to run the wiring for our new cooktop, neither my wife nor I could understand the ideaa he was trying to communicate -- though we did understand one thing: The price was subject to change after he began work. What's worse, when I received their proposal, they tried to charge me two unnecessary fees -- and insisted they were 100% necessary -- even though both DC's Department of Buildings and every other contractor I spoke with said these were 100% *un*necessary. Finally, even though both Ali and Diana promised to send me an itemized breakdown of their estimate, they changed their mind and refused to do so (after taking more than a week to send the estimate, thus breaking multiple deadlines they promised). To be sure, Diana gave me a rough breakdown over the phone, but when I asked her to include that in the written estimate, she said she'd need to check with Ali because she wasn't sure the numbers... were accurate. Needless to say, that never happened. And get this: When I said that I didn't want any patching or painting, they refused to change the price. I guess I'm supposed to pay for work that doesn't happen. I would not trust Capitol Design Build because they oppose transparency and because they promise one thing and do another. read more

The Capitol Design Build staff were extremely pleasant and knowledgeable to work with. Just ordered a complete Kohler fit out of hardware for a new walk-in shower remodel. Then used their decoration recommendations to select timeless wall and floor tile for the job. They were outstanding and the project was perfect for my needs. They know what they're doing. read more

An update to my last review. They called me and tried to make things work, so I foolishly gave them another shot. They picked out the materials and designs for me for my bathroom remodeling project and waited for my approval on them. I told them there were a few things I wanted to change, and for the first change, Rosa resisted. She can be stubborn a lot of times. I told them I wanted a different bathroom vanity and showed them what I would probably want from their showroom. Rosa kind of responded with attitude and said their first choice was more practical and would allow for more storage, but I said I'd rather get something else. She reasoned maybe 2-3 more times right away that their choice was more practical because their vanity choice would allow for more storage for cleaning products and toilet paper, but I didn't like what they chose and kept trying to tell her I already have storage for all that, but she wouldn't listen. Her colleague Esther was much more pleasant and easy to work with. I prefer to work with her. There were a few other things that Rosa and I butted heads on, and I can't understand why she would disagree with me on a handful of things when I'M the one that was paying them to do it! When I (foolishly) gave them a second chance, I had hired them and paid the required $1,000+ to hire them since I really liked some of their other materials and colors they selected for my bathroom and they boasted about the quality of their products. Days to weeks after though, Rosa had an attitude again on a separate project I had with them. I told her I needed to wait for others' estimates according to what my insurance company recommended and she said, "OH! You're considering OTHER people?" With an attitude. I never heard back from them again after that. I don't recommend working with Rosa. She tried to be extra nice after I posted my first review on Yelp and they had contacted me after that, but she just doesn't seem genuine and is difficult to work with. read more

Rosa Sorahi was the best to work with and she had the most amazing design that incorporated everything we were looking to have in our kitchen. If you sign the retainer with CDB you are pretty much donating your money and consider it lost! My husband first approached CBD because he saw their van outside a project in Hybla Valley, we are big fan of mid-century design, and those houses are mid-century so he thought they would be able to deliver our vision for our house. After the first call with Rosa, he was initially impressed for how responsive Rosa was. Then Rosa F. and Ali O. came to the house to see the project with a retainer at hand. Ali and Rosa spent two hours at the house. They wanted to know everything that we wanted to possibly change if money wasn't an issue. They said, tell us the must-haves and the perfect dream upgrades. We said from day one our budget was $120-$150k. They originally were asking for 15k for the retainer, and we signed it for 10k on March 03rd. Honestly, I thought it was super vague and I reluctantly signed. I wanted to be the supportive wife and I have regretted since then. The retainer stipulates that the amount will go towards products. First red flag, the retainer was vague, but Ali was pushing and made quickly handwriting updates to get us to sign it, and to build more trust he included the next appointment date. After that meeting everything went downhill. After two weeks, we had a follow up on their showroom. While we waited in the showroom, I noticed that at the next table, they were showing graphics and design to another prospective customer that had not signed the retainer yet, BUT for us we were told we need to sign it for them to start working on design, graphics, etc. That was the second red flag. During the presentation we were given ONLY one option for the products, and that ONE option was not mid-century, neither modern. They repeatedly told us that because of our small budget they were giving us the most affordable options. That was the third flag, they didn't get our style. Furthermore, the name of the company for the construction was not CBD, it was Quality Homes. We realized the products were going to be purchased by CBD and another company was going to perform the actual construction services. We then review the estimates, for a budget of $150k, they quoted $260k: *Powder room (2 x 10 ft): $15-$18, excluding permits *Kitchen extension (4 x 20ft): $123k, including permits *Half Bathroom upgrade (5ft x 10ft): $22k without moving plumbing, and shower and tub combined. *Additional Bathroom () $79k And of course, we needed to reduce the scope. At this point it went from bad to worse. Because we have reduced the scope of the project, they were NO longer responsive. Rosa missed every deadline she gave herself. read more

We arranged for virtual meeting but no show from the company rep. And also no advance notice of rescheduling by calls or email. Basically wasting our time as we need to set aside time for the meeting. Also didn't respond to emails as follow up to rearrange meeting. Looking to hire someone to do our kitchen was a daunting task that we procrastinated on for way too long. After finishing all the other many improvements to our home it was time to tackle our kitchen. We contacted several companies to get estimates. Capitol Design immediately got our attention, not because they were the cheapest, but because from the beginning they worked as a great team. They took pictures of our original kitchen and they prepared an incredible video to show us how our new kitchen would look after the project was completed. They are enthusiastic and proud of their accomplishment and they have a reason for it. Their prompt attention to our requested additional changes, additions, modifications, questions and concerns were met with detailed responses. Visited Capitol to get a simple quartz countertop and backsplash. Told the sales person, Jen, I wanted plain black top and white subway tile. We agreed on material and square footage. I assumed that both countertops would come with a 4" quartz border splash as I stated. Nope. That didn't happen...and was told they don't do this when I wrote an email to inquire where the 4" border was. This wasn't articulated very well in person or on the invoice. Also, when I showed up to pay via card Jen said there'd be a "convenience fee"...unless I had cash or check. So...had to drive all the way home to get a check. Again, more omitted info that would've been useful. Installation and material itself is very good quality. Be advised though, due to poor communication by the front desk, once they have your $4.5k deposited, you get what they give you. Honestly, I doubt I'd be a repeat customer. You'd think laying down that kind of money would get you A+ service on every level. Oh well, Caveat emptor. Update: Company resolved issue above. Bumped from 3 star to a 4. read more

One of the worst experiences I've had. I designed my mother's bathroom (full disclosure I am a designer) and they built it. This was in the beginning of my career and I thought I could work with them as my contractor. They always hit the client (my mom) up for money when there was a distinct payment schedule. It cost way more than they quote. Like 2-3 times more. I have no idea how they can quote materials. Nobody can do that unless they are picking out materials for you (which they do). So, you have no say in what you want. If you want a choice in tiles and materials this isn't the right place. They don't pay their employees, so they never show up to work. They complain to the client about it. My mom spent months sitting around waiting for the workers to come. It took six months for a bathroom! Years later I tried to work for them as a side contract designer. The owner treated me like a slave and refused to pay me for my time. I know they are doing the same thing as they have been all along. I hate speaking badly of my colleagues, but people need to know what they're dealing with here. They are con artists. After calling several granite/marble galleries in the area for assistance with a broken marble coffee table, Mr. Ozgun returned my call after reading the message I left with the company's executive assistant. I honestly didn't expect a return call since my request was such a small-scale action. Not only did Mr. Ozgun take the time to follow-up with my request, he also used his extensive contractor network to connect me with one of his trusted partners for the work. His genuine concern and selfless effort has earned him a customer for life! I sent in a request for a free consultation via their website. I received a call from Jamie, discussed what i wanted. Jamie said I would receive a call (or email) by EOD 10/20/21 to schedule an appointment as they were currently working on scheduling. I heard nothing from them. I called today, and was told they had no information on me. I said I expected a call back after they made inquiries from my conversation the day before. I did receive a call from Esther, she asked me a few questions about what I wanted, but nothing specific. I was expecting to have an appointment setup as Esther informed me. Esther came back on the line and asked me if $37.0K was acceptable. This is a small 10x 12 kitchen, I wanted cabinets, counter top and back splash. This quote was basically to "get rid" of me as I had not selected materials or design, and it was sight unseen! Very disappointed that a location business would treat a potential customer so poorly. Oh yeah, I asked about the free quartz counter top special on their site, but it expired 5/31/2020. read more

I have two experiences with Capitol Design Build spanning the last 4 years. The first was an EXTENSIVE bathroom makeover which was completed expertly and beautifully. I am talking about a TOTAL redesign, not just redoing tile and adding a new vanity. Their designer was top notch, and the manager, Ali, visited the site several times and added suggestions from his own extensive experience which really made everything work for us! Very recently (since I had moved from the house where the remodel was done and was now actually outside their normal service zone) I contacted them for suggestions on a special lighting problem I had for a shower niche in my new home. They did not hesitate to make suggestions based on their own experience which solved my problem beautifully! These folks are like family, and I highly recommend them for anyone's remodel project. read more

I highly recommend Capitol Design Build. They did an awesome job with our kitchen. Even though it took a little longer to finish, we're very happy with the result. My husband and I expected to get quality work and that is what they delivered. Thanks to Rosa for her great design and great suggestions on the materials and giving us opportunity to check out the slab before final cut and ability to change it at last minute. Stephen and their crew (especially Jose) were awesome. Like professionals they sealed the area well and cleaned up everyday when they are done at the end of the day. The only downside experience was the labor cost and timeline but in the end, it was worth it. You can really compare the finish of their work vs working with someone for cheaper labor. For new and future clients, just make sure to stay connected and communicate with your designer and project manager. I'm sure we were a pain throughout the process but Rosa and Stephen remained professional and understanding. Icing on the cake, Ali was very nice and generous to give us a free Egg at the end of the project even though we didn't qualify for the promotion in December (thanks Ali!). read more

Capitol Design Build recently finished a major remodel/enlargement of our kitchen and master bath; It's our opinion that they are the best in the business ! Rosa, our designer created plans that gave us more space, functionality, and user friendliness than we could have imagined ! From the owner Ali, Rosa, Steven, our project manager, Rudy, our lead installer, everyone was always on time, called us if schedules changed, answered any/all concerns we had at once, took great care to protect our home as the construction progressed, cleaned up each day as though they were never there, informed and discussed with us any needed changes, and they were always kind and pleasant to have around ! These people are perfectionists; !00% of the time we were welcome to speak with the owner, and Ali spoke with us often to see how things were going. An example, I had checked with 2 other major contractors in our area that did kitchen/bath reno's , I was told by both that flooring goes in last, around cabinets etc. I mentioned it to Ali ; he said absolutely not, it goes in first, wall to wall in case there are changes in the rooms. Capitol is very easy to work with; they have a beautiful showroom, but if you want something else they will help you. Another example, we were having extensive hardwood flooring throughout , found one from another source, fine, until Ali showed us why that flooring would not last and indeed would cause problems. He found for us another flooring that is not only beautiful , exactly what we had in mind, will outlast anything and at a better price ! The staff at Capitol are some of the nicest people ever, so welcoming and sterling customer service ! If I could build a dream house such as the ones on HGTV, I would definitely want Ali and his team as my builder ! read more

I recently bought back-splash for my kitchen from Capital Design Build. Since it is an open kitchen, I was looking for tiles that were not too prominent. I got a great advice from the staff, and an interior designer brought samples to my house and consulted with me on the finished look. The tiles were installed and finished in timely and professional manner. I specifically liked how they solved the problem of exposed edges. Capital Design is not the cheapest place in town and definitely not the most expensive, they give you what you pay for and then some. They have good quality tiles, as well as wide range of options. Over all, it was a good and pleasant experience, and I get lots of compliments on my new back-splash I will be visiting them for my future interior design needs. read more

Wonderful experience with people who have a great sense of style. When I decided to open up my kitchen into my living room and dining room, thus creating an open concept living area, I contacted Ali at Capitol Design Build. I made an appointment with him and together we came up with a plan that I truly loved. He sat with me for hours, showed me samples from their fantastic showroom thus making it easier for me to decide what I wanted. Once my mind was made he printed out a complete rendering of what my kitchen/living room would look like and I was happy. I ordered the cabinets, ductless fan and beautiful quartz countertops. Everything was delivered on time, the installation was perfect and I have now the most beautiful open spaced kitchen and living room in my building. I had a great experience with Capitol Design Build. I walked in to their store (as I was on my way to a different tile store, but saw Capitol and thought I'd stop in) and looked like a deer in headlights. I had little idea what to do with my small, 1940s bathroom on a small budget. Gudlah (I think I'm misspelling that) saw me and took me under her designer's wing. Over the course of 2 visits, she helped me figure out my style and choose wall and floor tiles, a sink, and faucets that met my needs and tastes that I didn't know I had. She and Ali (the co-owners) are the difference between "sales" and "design". I went to numerous other tile stores where their sales people are just that: sales. They didn't have the design eye that Capitol Design Build does. Gudlah and Ali could have sold me on all sorts of bullnoses, trims, borders, etc. But they really guided me and pointed out when too much is too much and, knowing I liked simple and clean, they kept me on target. They were both honest when I'd pick something out that didn't go with other items. They also helped me reign it in when I was ready to splurge on that $200 box of high-end backsplash tile when the $40 box was really equally eye appealing and sufficient. It's easy to get caught up in all the pretty things... they were great in helping me keep myself in check while giving me a beautiful bathroom in keeping with the 1940s style of my house but with a contemporary twist. Their service was great, too. My contractor goofed up an order and they worked with the supplier to waive the re-shelving fee. Ali, Gudlah, and Sandy treated me like a longtime friend and always made me feel valued even though I was not a huge sale for them. Lastly, their prices were very competitive. Used to Home Depot prices, I was afraid to use this small shop. Though they might not carry the lower quality or mass-produced items that the big box stores do (which was the appeal, in my opinion), their higher quality stock is priced very comparably to the other tile stores more frequently used by contractors doing residential work. I really can't think of a reason to give them less than 5 stars... so I DID! read more
