I'm from New York City and regularly attended the New York City Ballet at the Lincoln Center. I pretty much thought enjoying the ballet was over for me when moving out west and was very surprised to find a world class experience here in Salt Lake City. The Capitol Theatre is a worthy home of the high-quality work that is presented here. It's a little bit less grand than what I'm used to, but still a beautiful stage and curtain that is well appointed and does what any good theater should. It successfully puts your mind in body in that space where you're ready to digest an artistic effort with just the right amount of respect and anticipation that is appropriate. It's also well managed. I've been to a couple of events held here in the lobby that were again... Perfectly conceived and executed. This is a real feather in Salt Lake City's cap. read more

The theater was not made for tall or wide people, there are some seats that are akin to the worst seat on a tiny plane so be very careful with seat selection. Also, don't expect to be comfortable. Unless you understand the language of the opera, the box seats are horrible - seeing back stage is distracting, sound isn't surround so you sometimes can't hear parts, and the subtitles are not in your eye-line. Bathrooms are clean but again, small stalls and not a lot of room. Concessions is very basic and you're only allowed water in the theatre. Due to the affordability, I'll continue to buy season tickets. There's no plans to upgrade this place unfortunately so we're stuck with a mediocre design - you're best best is to call and ensure you sit exactly where you want for your desired experience. read more

If you are a theater-goer, chances are good that you'll find yourself at Capitol before too long. They host some wonderful shows and big-ticket events and it's the place to be! The facility is beautiful, but dated. If you stay distracted by the magnificent chandelier and ornate architecture, you may not notice the cramped seating and hot temperatures. It sounds like I'm hating on Capitol, but I'm not a hater. I genuinely do like going here and won't let some of the idiosyncrasies of the old building get in the way of some fantastic entertainment. You'll find parking nearby at several public parking lots as well as a variety of wonderful restaurants. Capitol Theatre is a wonderful centerpiece to a perfect date night. read more

I came here with some friends for the opera and it was such a blast! The performers are excellent and talented! The lobby area is very nice looking and had character from its older age. They even have a screen with the translations of needed and the staff were friendly. The concessions are limited but they have an excellent system down so you can get your treat very fast! My only complaint is the chairs in the theater are old, small, and super squished together so it wasn't the most comfortable seating... maybe they could make an update to the seats in the future. read more

Sadly, I am disappointed to say that the Capitol Theatre is the most uncomfortable theatre I've experienced. Yes, the ambiance and decor is beautiful, but beauty doesn't add comfort. I sat right on the balcony, and it was insanely warm. Of course, heat rises but the temperature control is non-existent at this theatre. I'm 5'9", and my legs were digging into the seat in front of me. There is no wiggle room if you're in between people. Even my boyfriend who sat on the aisle had to stretch his legs into the aisle for comfort. Go here for the show, but do not expect a comfortable viewing experience. read more

Definitely an update on my review. I just went and saw Beauty and the Beast through ballet west and it was great. We were sitting kind of in the back but you could still see everything. The theatre isn't that big but I recommend the top tier levels. Actually not a bad seat in the house. Parking is where they lose a star. I recommend taking an Uber here. Very little street parking. The greatest person, or one of the greatest persons that ever we're to live on the Earth, the talent he has is unreal. But what's even more in real is that I actually have become a friend of his holler? Maybe I should say he's become a friend of mine. I went to a show here last night and was reminded about how horrible of a venue this is. The only thing it has going for it is the vintage beauty. But the seats and view are HORRIBLE! We sat up in the "nosebleed" section. There is more legroom in a discount airline flight. You literally have to scrunch up your knees and you're still touching the chair in front of you. Then good luck trying to actually see the performers. Stairs to get up there are also far too steep! This place needs a massive, modern redesign of the seats and guest experience. I need to remind myself to never go back until that's accomplished! read more

Ballet here is pretty good watched many ballet shows. The only complaint is that their concessions are very expensive

She's a grand old dame and don't let anyone say otherwise. When I was a kid, I have a vivid memory of my grandparents taking me to the traveling company performance of CATS and I was in awe at this place. Its gorgeous ceilings, the balcony; I loved how fancy it felt. As a grownup I've been back, and yes yes yes it's true that the leg room situation is not ideal, especially if you're over five and a half feet tall. But for me the charm and vintage nature, restored to high quality and historic reverence, more than makes up for the fact that you've got some knee bonking going one. The sound here is pretty darn solid. I saw Iron & Wine and if ever there's a show that you want to hear clearly, with all the soft subtleties of the vocals, and the crazy amounts of nontraditional percussion, it's that show. And the theatre really delivered the sonic quality I had hoped. Park on the streets (metered), or park in a nearby parking garage, but there's not much free parking nearby so you can opt to take the train downtown and walk a few blocks or just grab a car if you're worried about it. She's a grand old dame. She's not the newest, or biggest, or only venue in town anymore, but let's not forget that she's got more character than just about any spot out there. read more

I went to see Swan Lake at The Capitol Theatre. It was fantastic! Cute, and intimate venue. It does need a deep cleaning though. I know it's a historical place but it's tacky in many ways. Folding tables with dirty table clothes for merchandise being sold. Really? Not to mention the people selling it have no smiles to trade. The quality of everything in SLC is beginning to get on my nerves. Utah can't hold a candle to California. And, the most mind-blowing thing is people here are so proud, and unaware of how they lag on the world stage. read more

I've been here a lot of times, for many different types of shows. Yet, I've never reviewed it. Hmmm. This is a mid sized classic theatre. It's hard to find a bad seat. Yea, it would be nice to have more legroom and all, but this really is the original old school place. The details are beautiful. It's a joy for the eye. It's also the perfect size for the Opera. By only nits are that I'd like them to open the main room a little earlier before the show, and I'd like more proper options for beer and wine. That's not a lot. read more

This past winter was the first time I went to this theatre to watch the classic winter tale: The Nutcracker. I was thoroughly impressed with the quality of the show and the professionalism of it all. I believe that this is one of the Jewels of Salt Lake City because it has been here for a while and has built up its reputation. For a night, it felt nice to get dressed up with a snazzy tie and head down to the theatre because the little charm that the theatre has just makes you feel classy. The Capitol Theatre is home to the Utah Opera and Utah's Ballet West ballet company. And throughout the year touring performances such as the Disney Broadway shows can also be seen here. Inside the theater is beautiful with elaborate, ornate decorations and huge crystal chandeliers. The architecture dates back to an era when going to the theater was extra special and people dressed to the nines. Nowadays sadly you'll see people in t-shirt and jeans at the ballet... seriously, I've seen it... but I digress... Being an older theater the seating at the Capitol Theater is not the most comfortable -- the seats are small, don't have a lot of padding, and don't have much leg room. Which is really too bad because the theater has just about everything else going for it. First class lighting and stage production, great audio quality, and of course great architecture and ambiance as I already mentioned. Despite it's shortcomings the Capitol Theater is a wonderful venue and home to some of the best performances anywhere in Utah. I've attended many different performances at the Capitol Theater including several Ballet West productions such as: The Nutcracker (a few times), Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, and others. Ballet West is an amazing ballet company and the lighting, sound, and stage productions are simply outstanding I've also seen the Disney Broadway productions of Mary Poppins and the Lion King at the Capitol Theater and throughly enjoyed them. The Lion King was AMAZING and without a doubt one of the best, if not the best show I've ever seen. Unfortunately tickets are very expensive at the Capitol Theater. The Disney shows and the ballet will set you back a lot of money for good seats. That is one of the reasons I am marking this down to four stars instead of five, although with my complaints concerning the seating. It's a shame performing arts organizations don't do much to lower ticket prices and make the arts more accessible to everyone. With the exception of the Disney shows I'm not sure I've ever attended a sold-out performance at the Capitol Theater. At the ballet for example I am sure there have always been available seats, evening on Friday and Saturday performances... But that's the way it is I suspect. Despite the cost of tickets we've enjoyed some absolutely wonderful shows at the Capitol Theater and didn't miss the money we spent at all. When you wrap it all up the Capitol Theater is an outstanding theater and we're lucky to have it in Salt Lake City. read more

Wow! I've been coming to performances here for almost forty years. Much needed expansion and improvements. Especially the additional bathrooms, elevators, hallways and concessions area. Except for the carpets. Yuck. I heard several men talking about them. So they are really ugly. I'm happy they didn't change the interior of the theater! It's classically beautiful. read more

This is a beautiful theatre. In the last three months I have been here for two ballets and one opera. All performances were excellent and I can't wait to go to more. Some tips I've learned: The mezzanine offers great views, but the seats are extremely close together up there. At 5'5" I can sit fairly comfortable, but my friend who is 6'4" was not comfortable at all. If you decide to sit in the mezzanine due to price or availability, at least try to get an aisle so the taller folks can stretch their legs out if needed. I most recently sat up front on the lower level and we were shocked at how much more leg room we had!! As always, the middle sections will offer the best views, but you can still see everything you need from the sides as well. If you like great deals, make sure to sign up for emails! I was able to go to the Sleeping Beauty ballet for 50% off since they were trying to fill up seats last minute. I was thrilled because I wanted to see the show, but I didn't want to spend $80+ on a ticket. They also offer a lot of promotions where you can buy tickets for multiple shows to save, plus they offer season tickets if you want to make sure you make it to every performance. Performances can be expensive, but it's definitely possible to enjoy them without breaking the bank. In case you're anything like me and you panic on what to wear - it seems like just about anything goes here. The matinees are generally more laid back. You will hardly see any suits or evening dresses, although you will see some. The majority will be dressed nice, but not fancy. Think everyday dresses/skirts, slacks, button up shirts, etc. The nighttime shows get dressier. And you'll definitely see plenty of people in their jeans and khakis no matter what show you go to. Wear what makes you comfortable. For me, I like to dress on the classier side of things - it makes the opera and ballet more fun! read more

My wife loves the theater, which means I love the theater. Okay, I mostly love the theater. Capitol is one of those cool, old venues with tons of history. There are things to love and dislike about this place and I have several opinions in both categories: I love the fact that they book national, Broadway plays. It's good to get me some culture and you should too. I love the historical beauty. Cool ceilings, classic seating, and that "old building" feel about the place. Unfortunately, the historical aspect also creates some dislikes. When this place was built, I am pretty sure the theater attendees were shorter than 5' tall and only had asses about 13" wide. You're going to be crammed in to a seat with little to no leg room. Pick a comfy position and prepare for various appendages to go to sleep in the chair. When intermission comes around, take full advantage to pry said backside from your chair and get some blood flowing before amputation is needed. Dress appropriately. With the 10+ things I have seen in Capitol I don't think I've ever had a comfortable temperature. You freeze or bake, no in between. The only constant has been in the back of the lower seating, under the balcony, where the hot air is trapped. You will bake here regularly. If you are in the balcony, bring a climbing harness and repelling rope. It's steep and, if you have people with poor balance or walking abilities, take a little extra time to get seated and be prepared for some vertigo. Overall I DO love the Capitol. It's a piece of heritage that brings culture to my life. We need more of that. I just wish I could experience it a little more comfortably. read more

Okay, so I have a slightly different perspective than most. I am on wheels, and the capitol theatre is not the most accessible place. I either have to sit way in the back or the very far side. However this is okay with me because of the pure beauty this building displays. I would not change it's integrity. I have seen wonderful shows here including: wicked, the lion king, phantom of the opera and mary poppins. I am always impressed with the caliber of performers. read more

Such a cool theatre. We came to watch Silent Night with the entire family. The place was hopping, people milling around every corner of the theatre. I jumped in the will call line which only took a few minutes of waiting. And then to the theatre, where the ushers were very helpful in seating us. I suppose they could see that deer-in-headlight's look on my face and came quickly to the rescue. I thought the seats were comfortable and roomy. The stage was sizable and you could get a good view from any seat. I'll want to be coming back here as our whole family has a great time. read more

I am indeed a fan! I have season tickets to Broadway Across America which is (currently) housed here and at Kingsbury Hall. This theatre is elegant and WONDERFUL! It was built back when short people ruled the world, so the leg room is not so great. However, the seats are comfortable and frankly there is not a bad seat in the house to see the stage. The volunteers and staff are pretty great. They are helpful in getting you to your seats on time. However, it is funny to watch some of them during the shows. Give a dude a headset and all of a sudden he is drunk with power. My favorite part of the night was the second the lights came up for intermission a lady was yelling out that she had water to sell ... like we were at a Jazz game! Oh sister. Not a jab at the theatre, but can I just encourage theatre goers to save the sweat pants and holey jeans for sporting events? This is the theatre, it is alright to get dressed up for the night and put on airs!! So let's talk genres here. Not only do they house the travelling Broadway shows, they house Utah Opera and Ballet. I have two complaints for this venue: 1) The theatre has not been recently updated in the sound department. They have tried to add sound for the mezzanine, which is my preferred place to sit, but it is not so good. The speakers for Broadway shows sit on the stage sides and there is one set of speakers above the stage. Nice try Capitol, but no cigar. The sound for the Broadway shows upstairs is a little lacking. 2) The women's restrooms are also a little lacking. But to be fair they usually are in theatre venues. Rumor has it a new sleek theatre is coming to Downtown. I hope it will not replace the Capitol Theatre as the go-to venue for all that the Capitol houses. We came here to see Wicked but I guess this review should be for the facility itself. For as old as this building is it's beautiful and in fantastic shape. The rows of seats are slightly tighter together than most places but it's not a big deal. I don't think there is a bad seat in the house. We sat rather high up but could see and hear everything just fine. read more

I had to post a review after attending the ballet Onegin last night. Please note the performance was 5 stars! The venue is not. Although it is historical and beautiful with friendly staff, I do not understand how during their renovation they did not make comfortable seating more of a consideration. While views of the stage were great, the seats are extremely uncomfortable and extremely tight. There is NO leg room whatsoever and I am only 5'7. Don't plan on getting out to use the bathroom or even during intermission since everyone next to you will have to stand up or move. It was also very hot. Everyone in audience was fanning themselves. Such a shame that to enjoy such a beautiful ballet by one of the premiere companies in the US, you have to endure such discomfort. read more

My wife and I also went to the Capitol Theatre to see Wicked, and I will keep to reviewing just the theater rather than the production. However, the Salt Lake City company nailed it. What a great performance by the entire cast, crew and orchestra. Regarding the parking, I guess it could be considered a major problem, because of all of the construction work going on in the immediate area. But we like to go downtown because my wife has a parking pass for one of the larger parking building right around the corner. So for us there really is no parking issue. Yes we are lucky. There are plenty of little restaurants, delis, and pubs in the immediate area so finding something to do if you arrive at the theater a little early is no problem. Which is good because outside of the theater there is really no place to sit down before you go in. Going in was a breeze, the tickets were scanned by five different people stationed before the doors and everybody got in with literally no hassle. Yes, the theater is old, but it is a classic. Reminds me of the Pantages in Los Angeles, my old hometown. Beautiful chandeliers, a nice sized balcony that is not too far from the stage, and it does not appear that there is a bad seat in the house. Our seats were in the 14th row of the orchestra section, stage right, and there was none of the action on stage that we missed. I see where a few other patrons and reviewers have said that the inside of the theater is much too warm. I guess that could be true, because I did see dozens of people all over the area who were fanning themselves with their programs, and fancy oriental fans that the had brought in. But I was sitting right behind a group of women who were constantly fanning themselves, and I don't know if it was because of the breeze they were causing, but I was freezing, I felt like I was bracing against the cold until my back muscles actually ached. Although the theatre made good use of the space and got as many patrons inside as they could, there was a surprising amount of leg room at my seat, I am usually not comfortable in theater seats, but this was very comfy. Overall, this being our first experience with any musical or stage production here in Salt Lake City, we were very impressed with all of it. So much so, that I believe we will buy a season subscription for the both of us, and that's the best recommendation I can give about any place I've reviewed. I see no reason to take away any stars, this place deserves all 5! read more

I love Capitol Theatre and am so grateful Utah gets such a great selection if Broadway traveling shows. I am a season ticket holder and thoroughly enjoy it. However, the narrow seat space is awful on my knees. I am only 5'7" and my knees push into the seat in front of me the entire show so that by the end of every show I am in pain. I had hoped all the construction and changes were going to include seat changes, but it does not look as if that is the case. As a result, I am left to choose pain to enjoy art. :( read more

I love coming here. It's an elegant old theater, and it adds that extra something to whatever you've come to see. I've seen Les Miserable, Ballet West's Sleeping Beauty, Alison Krauss, and a couple benefit shows. I've been up close and personal, and I've been in the nose-bleed. No matter where you are, you'll have a good experience. The acoustics are wonderful, the theater is comfortable and just beautiful. They do provide booster seats for kids, so make sure to grab one on your way in from coat check (free of charge.) My only wish...more stalls in the bathrooms. You can spend your entire intermission in that line. :/ Not enough of a gripe to dock a star though. Great venue. read more

The venue itself is beautiful and the productions first rate but boy do the employees need an attitude adjustment. The volunteers are all over 70 or out of shape and you worry they won't make it to the doors let alone up the steps and yet they act as if they are doing you a huge favor instead of the other way around. Can you say unpleasant experience? The fake smiles and head bobs bely a militant intent to crush you like a bug for merely sneaking a peak at your phone or asking directions to the bathroom. Ahh Capitol Theater... I've attended all sorts of events at this upscale venue, but my most recent experience watching The Book of Mormon musical was probably the best. We sat in the mezzanine, and at first glance it seemed a little far away. Once the production began, I was pleased with our view and didn't mind our location one bit. I'm not sure if this happens for every event, but they served beer last night which I thought was kind of cool. It can only be consumed in the lobby, and the lines were crazy long, but I was happy to have kept my buzz going just a little bit longer during the intermission. Bathrooms are also plentiful on the many floors, so I never waited terribly long. read more

Since moving here, I have had the opportunity to catch 2 shows at the Capitol Theater. Saw the Lion King and Wicked. Both were phenomenal. The theater is beautiful and intimate. For a smaller stage, it is truly amazing what they do. Once inside, you could believe that you are in New York in terms of the quality of the performances, staging, costumes, I did note a recent reviewer noticed the lack of air conditioning. We noticed this as we walked toward the lobby area but our seats were pretty cool during the show. I am omitting 1 star due to the lack of restrooms. The line is always out of control...so much so, that my friend and I darted across to Olive Garden at intermission. Sorry OG but a gals gotta do what a gal has to do. And the Capitol is old so it is what it is. I love that this historical landmark is available to quench our broadway thirst! read more

It's hard to give an honest review about a theater. The majority of the experience you have in a theater is based on the movie or play you see while you're there. I will do my best to keep it honest. The building itself is reminiscent of a simpler time with a classy modern style. The theater seating is wonderful in the sense that no matter where you're sitting, you will have a good view of the stage. However, it's extremely tight. I'm a bit overweight (not unhealthily so) so trying to force myself into those tight seats was quite uncomfortable both physically and psychologically. The staff was mostly kind when we picked up our tickets and made our way up the stairs to our balcony. However, when we were taking pictures, one of the staff came up and yelled at us. I understand now that it's against the rules to take pictures of the set but it seems to me that no staff member of any company should ever yell at a consumer. There must have been a more professional way to handle that. read more

This theater is gorgeous! Beautiful interior and exterior! The outside has a shining bright Capitol Theater sign that's hard to miss. Once you walk in its super clean and night big area with theater in the back. The theater is where the beauty is really at though. The stage huge! With beautiful classic red currants and red seats and gold trim everywhere. We go every year to see the Nutcracker and it's a good experience everytime we go. The show is always great, even though sometimes they change dances I don't always like them as much as the last year but that's a personal preference. Another thing is these tickets are very expensive. We usually pay anywhere from $80-$150 for a ticket. So this is not a cheap experience. The intermission snacks are great! They have chocolate cinnamon bears that I love and are so amazing there! read more
