In my 80th year, after discovering flat caps, and what in the midst of what must be a late-life…read morecrisis - I'm in love with the Village Hat Shop - there, I said it! On the positive side: Inventory - This neighborhood shop carries a huge inventory with a wide variety of brands, styles and price points. Prices - From what I can tell, each brand and style may offer a variety of price points and the shop does sometimes offer discounts and specials. Availability - The shop offers convenient and customer friendly hours, check web site for the details. Staff - In my experience the staff has invariably been welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable. When I recently mentioned that a flat cap I'd purchased there seemed a little snug, they insisted on enlarging it a half-size at no charge, and the result was perfect. Location - It is absolutely perfect for me to have what I've heard is the country's best hat store only 15 minutes from home. I often arrive with questions only and they are always welcoming and helpful. Negatives The traffic is awful because of construction work going on along 4th Avenue. Parking anywhere nearby on the street is nearly impossible, but there is a small lot at the rear of the building in the alley between 4th and 5th, and Robinson and University that I've never seen more than half-filled and is free for customers.

Rating: Less Than 1 Star…read more I found a hat priced at $209 that had a visible hole in the outer brim. When I pointed it out to the sales associate, she told me that was "how the hat is made." I asked whether there were any other holes like it on the hat, and she acknowledged there were not. Because the item was a final sale, I asked whether they would consider a discount due to the defect. The assistant manager declined. I then asked to speak with the store manager and was told the manager was not there. When I asked who could make that decision, the assistant manager said she would need to contact the executive manager but did not offer to do so until I specifically asked her to make the call. Instead, she took the hat from me and said she would return it to the vendor. I explained that I wanted to buy the hat and was simply requesting a reasonable discount because it had a visible defect. At that point, she said, "It can't hurt to ask the manager," took my phone number, and said someone would get back to me. I'm waiting to see whether management follows up and will update this review accordingly.

The staff made sure to let us know they were there if we had any questions. Why my husband was looking over the hats I checked out what the store carried. They had a lot of Padres sports wear but also carried shoes. I looked at the little Vans for toddlers, very cute. They also carried different styles of Uggs wear. The store is very clean and organized. The staff was friendly and helpful not only to us but the other customers that walked in after us. My husband made his purchase, 3 hats. He was pleased with the purchase and found them to be a fair price. It was quite a ways to visit this location. But they have other stores and one of them being in Escondido, which is closer to were we live.

Sure, you can pick up an SD hat from Amazon that will arrive overnight and you'll match every other person at the ballpark, or you can come to Cali Wear and get a hat that is so unique and hard to find that you'll have every Joe in your row asking you, "where did you get that hat?" I know, because it's happened. Sure, they do have other teams but they're mostly supporting SD with hats basically overflowing the glass cases. Don't be basic, shop here for something a bit different and uniquely SD.

Some folks can't step out without their LV bags. Others, Jordan's or Air Max's, and that's all…read morebreezy. When it comes to threads though, there are only few places that keep me eager and wanting for more, and one of those places is Human Catalyst. The Digs: Tucked in between a brewery and coffee shop in the ever-changing Downtown Chula Vista is where you can find Russell Takashima's humble store front. What I love about this spot is that his storefront keeps it clean and simple, allowing his products to be the main focal point once you step inside. The musical slaps welcome you in and invite you to browse around, eventually leading into genuine conversation and networking with other folks that happen to just stop by. The Product: The message behind the thread harps on the hustle that happens from 5-2-9: the dreams and goals that go beyond our own human restraints (my interpretation, of course). Russ truly catalyzed simple, yet effectively designed streetwear that gets straight to the punch. From hip hop to cars and culture, each piece of clothing invites folks from all ages and walks of life to trade stories at his table. The Why of It All: Community - plain and simple. This unsuspecting joint does so much more than just dish out merch. Russ opens his door and welcomes conversations with EVERYONE. He also invests in others with his time and talents to give back ten-fold to different community events and so much more. So the next time you find yourself strolling through 3rd Ave. and you see Human Catalyst, take some time to check out their website (because COVID :( ) and learn more about the brand. Whether you're browsing around or you're looking to add on to your already extensive collection (and yes, about 2/3 of my closet is pure HC wear), I guarantee you'll gain so much more than just a fresh look.
