Cool throwback sports gear store. I think they mainly do custom orders for team uniforms and other gear as my son's travel ball program uses them. But the boys behind the counter are always down for some story telling and they have a lot of brands with regard to baseball/softball gear. read more

In today's big's box business where Capitalism has dead-ended to one or two huge impersonal options, it's so nice to know Berry's is still helping athletes. My first spikes (red leather converse - flew like Rickey Henderson at La Mesa Pony) were bought here. Now, a rare springboard diver emblem for my son's letterman's jacket was ordered. These guys been around since 1952 and it's starting to look like the people working there were the original employees. This could be a good thing or a bad thing. But for now, it's leaning towards bad. Took my son's letterman jacket in to get some stuff added and surprise him before the school year was up. Called and they said they had to order some patches and it would be 2 weeks. No problem. I go in, pay for the stuff Feb 10th ($140 for 3 patches, seems "fair"). Well I call 3 weeks later asking about the patches. They said "let me take your name down and I'll call you back" Call again next week (week 4) and again "you ordered what? Let me get your name and number and I'll have Bob (or whatever his name was) call you back. Call again next week (week 5, we are now in mid March) and again, same crap "what's your name? We will call you back" So I call back again and finally get a hold of "Bob". Well apparently he says "someone" (Berry's) dropped the ball and the patches were never ordered! So now he's gonna order them and it should be 2 weeks. No apology, no offer for a discount, nothing. So again, call back the end of that week to make sure it's been ordered. And they said they will call me back and give me an update. Never got a call back. So I decided to cancel the order and go somewhere else. I call them, they said they can't find when the patches were ordered (1st or 2nd time) but I tell them to cancel the order and I want a refund. They say "okay." And it will be 3-4 days for the refund to hit my bank...... 2 weeks later, still no refund BUT I found another shop in Chula Vista AND I already got my letterman jacket back with new patches for $80, just in time for spring. I think Berry's thinks they can live over their previous performance and that people will still keep coming to them and put up with this horrible customer service. I love to support small/family business but if I'm not treated right, I'll take my money somewhere else. I have 3 more kids about to enter High School and Berry's is one place I'll never shop at when it comes to letterman jackets (which they buy for $150 and sell for $450 BUT the shop in CV sells for $350, same quality) read more

Prices are on the higher side but it's well worth it because the service is A1 every time. Came in for some team baseball uniforms my son is going to play for in a larger tournament. Everyone was super friendly and patient with us as we had to try on a few tops to see which fit best as my son is in between sizes. Fast turnaround time with the unis and excellent quality. The people who work here are so friendly and I had not really known that we could have ordered our letterman jacket from them or I would have. I love supporting mom n pop businesses. We found out about this spot when we had to get the patches put on and the ALMA'S ALTERNATIONS person put them on perfectly. She wasn't there when I dropped it off, but the sales associate took all the info and it was done in less than 48 hours. The store called me twice to let me know it was ready to pick up and it was so perfect. This store has a ton of uniforms and athletic supplies and Padres gear. They are open on the weekends. I would not trust any regular alterations place to handle a letterman jacket. They really know the correct placement and spacing. Smaller patches were $9 and later ones, like the name on the back is $12. They have sample jackets at the store so you can check out the styles. They also have different patches to add on. Parking is on the front & you need to make a quick right when you get to the front or else you have to do a double U-turn. Do not park in back. read more

I wish there was another sporting good store around that carried quality stuff like they do. They seem to carry what we need. It's hard to get anything high-end from Dick's or big five. But the service at Berry's is very hit or miss. My high school daughter does not even like to go there by herself. She says they are just mean and rude. I have seen them be that way several times as well. There's one guy in there that's super cool to work with. Very very helpful. But their patience is extremely low, and they have a screwed up no return policy. My wife took my daughter in there to get some things, and she was blown away at how rude the people working that day were. The lady that probably owns the store is probably the worst. And then the guy that hangs out with her. Just miserable people, with very low end Customer Service. I'm actually very surprised by the number of five star reviews on here. They have managed to stay in business when the big boxes are taking over. I support mom and pop shops as much as possible. Kudos to them for staying in business and being able to provide us with high-end sporting-goods equipment. But please hire some people that are familiar with high-end customer service. Over the years of my kids playing sports this has been the worst customer service I ever encountered. This last incident was them putting my daughters letterman's jacket on the rack for display for their benefit. It has been ready for quite some time and actually my daughters classmate saw it on display for everybody to touch and put their germs which is very disturbing post pandemic. The way you handled the situation you can keep your dry cleaning and put it you know where but that just admits your guilt. read more

This sporting good store sells all the latest athletic apparel and equipment for most junior and high schools throughout San Diego County. The store reminds me of Goetz in Redwood City, CA, where they do the same duty for the Peninsula. Just like Goetz, this store has a well-informed staff and is also family-owned. But unlike Goetz, Berry's is much more organized, ample and carry more items for all wannabe jocks like myself at my age. But then, I came during the summer when most kids are on break from school; where the store is less chaotic and unruly. During the school year, the athletic store will be eventfully occupied for all devoted athletic kids whose ambition is to be a future star player. The store also sells apparels from the San Diego Padres and NFL's San Diego Chargers. What I also like is the large selection of those new goalie-style catchers' mask. These are the same exact catcher's mask worn by some major-leaguers including my new "man-crush"-Buster Posey of the San Francisco Giants. I didn't buy anything from my visit. But I love to browse through sporting good stores, which reminds me of my athletic days in high-school. read more

Took a jacket there on January for only embroidery and now we're on March 25 and still has no call. First time I called on February 18 they said jacket is there when I went to pick it up they embroidered the name wrong although it was written right on the paper. And they removed one of the patches and got disappeared. They said that it will get fixed. I went again after 3 weeks and they brought the jacket with no name and the patch still missing. One of the owners promised that he will fix it and will give me a call on Monday and that Monday never came back. Very disappointed with their service. read more

There aren't a whole lot of places that I could find to order custom letterman jackets from. During my research on Yelp, I found Berry's and decided to pay them a visit. My husband and I wanted to surprise our freshman with her very own letterman jacket for Christmas this year. Ordering the jacket and picking up the final product took a little over a month, and I'm glad I went there early enough to get the jacket in time for Christmas. I didn't have the letter or any of the patches at the time I placed the order but Berry's was very accommodating. I was able to bring everything after the jacket arrived in the store and their seamstress sewed everything on and had it ready the same day. I just wanted to thank everyone that I interacted with for being very friendly and helpful. Thank you to Jim, John and Matt! First we went to a bigger well known sports supply, which they were rude and not helpful at all.big mistake on our part.. As far as i can remember, this has been the place to get your gear for baseball in the southbay. Forget the Sports Authority or Big 5, the people there are not knowledgeable on the gear they sell. Berry's has a good reputation for ordering gear. I needed some pants with maroon pen stripes. I ordered them on a Monday, they got there on Wednesday. They fixed my glove, taped my fungo bat, answered a million questions from me over the years on their product line. So if you're a coach and need some gear for your team, this has always been a good place to go. They have better selection than Charlie Rose (in my opinion), and the staff is very helpful when you have questions. read more

Came in to buy my son a new baseball bat... everyone that works here is extremely friendly and very attentive. They answered as many questions that we needed and we never felt rushed. They even let our son take the bat outside to swing it a couple times and get a feel for the weight. Came to this store in May on recommendation from someone I know. We were looking for a high school letterman jacket. We spent over an hour in the store with a helpful employee, trying on sizes and looking at styles and color combinations. My daughter has a long torso, so we opted for a Large jacket with 2 inches added to the length. She had her letters and patches. Were told it would take 4-6 weeks. Finally time to pick it up. She's very excited and we take it home. She tries it on some more and discover That it is a XLarge jacket. It was much bigger across chest and looked really baggy. (Should have looked in the store, but didn't think there was a need to) We take it back and speak to an older gentleman this time. I explain that they made the jacket in the wrong size. Without a problem and any questions, they take the jacket back and will send it back to be re-made. Another 4 week wait. Time to pick it up again. First thing we check is the size. We also compare it to the old one, that they still had in the store, so we can see that it is more narrow across the chest. My daughter realizes that this one does not have the media pocket sewed in to the lining like the first one had. We question it, and the lady that works with the jackets said that their seamstress might be able to use the pocket from the first jacket lining and put it into the second jacket. We leave it once more in the store. This was on a Friday. The following Monday, we get a call for it to be ready once more. This time it's PERFECT. Their seamstress did a fabulous job putting in the pocket. We give the store 3 stars because the quality of the jacket is great and they never once gave us hard time about correcting their mistakes. Just wish it was correct the first time. read more

I have spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars at this place rather than going to a big box store. Generally they're not the cheapest, but I would rather give my money to A small business than a big chain. But don't buy here anything here if you want to return it. I bought a $50 pair of baseball pants that didn't fit my son (I had them for 48 hrs) I simply wanted to return them and they won't give you your money back, they only give you a store credit. Answer: Take him to Berry's. Hubby had been dropping hints about Berry's for six months, so we finally made it down to Lemon Grove on his birthday. Thinking there was no way that he could spend more money on his baseball? Think again ... Berry's has everything and then some. We walked out of there with around $300 worth of equipment with the help of friendly and knowledgeable sales staff. You know how sometimes these places are staffed with pissy old men that hate what they do? Berry's is totally not like that ... they love what they do and their enthusiasm is infectious. We were there at least an hour and they were patient, conversational, and sincere. Very refreshing to meet this sweet group of people. I ordered my Sons letterman jacket and I was very dissatisfied.... I had to take it somewhere else to correct the stitching. When I ordered it I felt rushed and I wasn't given a chance to discuss logos.. I don't know why I didn't leave. I guess I was being trustful they knew what the school logo was,since they said they had done many jackets for our school. Horrible experience!!! My husband wanted a jacket for his birthday December 6. We ordered a jacket and was originally told early January for pick-up. They requested we pay the funds up front due to a special order. We waited and waited finally in March they jacket came in and it was not what we ordered. They weakly apologized for the error. The owner ordered the correct jacket. Almost 4-months to get a jacket and when we picked the jacket up only so sorry. We were not offered anything since they already had gotten their money back in December. The jacket was NOT cheap. My husband kept saying it was not a BIG deal. Well it was a BIG deal to me due the poor customer service and lack of communication. We will not be shopping their in the future. I went into Berry's athletic supply yesterday and I got very bad/ racist vibes. There were 4 ppl in the store 2 ppl behind the counter, 1 helping customers, and one lady in the back stitching a shirt or pants. The whole time my boyfriend and I were looking around we could feel all 8 eyes on you. The guy kinda was following us around to see if we were going to steal something. We like to look around at every section and it made us feel very uncomfortable so we kinda rushed out. The guy asked us like 4 times if we were ready to pay and we were only there maybe less than 20 min. I got so uncomfortable that I almost asked if they get a lot of thieves on the daily because that is what it looked like. My experience was a 3/10 I would probably never go back. read more
