I went in on Friday afternoon with empty cooler. I ordered quite a bit of seafood to take home to family and friends in MD and PA. I told them I would be back a little after 9:00 on Sat. morning. I arrived a little after 9:30. My cooler was packed with the slotted seafood in ice. A young man carried it out to my car for me. It is the only place we buy our seafood when we visit Emerald Isle. This year we decided to pretty much skip the restaurants and cook fresh seafood from Captain Willis'. Over the course of the week we had 9lbs of steamed shrimp, grouper, red snapper, flounder, jumbo lump crab meat, and scallops. Just four of us at the cottage. Also two key lime pies. On the way out of town we picked up plenty of grouper, jumbo lump crab, scallops and another key lime pie. I think we'll skip the restaurants again next year, and just go to Captain Wills' read more

Amazing food! I just ordered peel and eat shrimp with old bay. Amazing! Service was very nice and very helpful, especially if you are not experienced in eating seafood. Thought I'd follow up with my results: Returned to Cap'n Willis the next morning with crabs on hand. Explained politely my dissatisfaction with my purchase and requested a refund. I was referred to the "owner" who was an elderly woman. Again described my dissatisfaction, adding that I grew up on the "shore" - my experience with crabs/crabbing was deep. Crabs that smell of ammonia are "old" crabs- dead prior to cooking. Her response was, "they were all alive when you left!" SORRY...my receipt clearly stated that they were purchased already steamed!! Her back up response- "well, the crabs where you are from are different than these". OH, REALLY?? You have advertised blue crabs. A blue crab is a blue crab all up and down the east coast as far as I know! Over her shoulder, a woman stood shaking her head. Who later was very apologetic for the entire debacle (thank you!). She even inquired about the clams - (which tasted of diesel fuel). I suspect she knew sub standard items were being sold. Anyway...I invited the owner to eat one of the crabs right then and there and if she would, I would gladly apologize and leave. OF COURSE she declined! All I wanted was my $$ back!! I felt badly as the elderly woman had no idea how to reverse a charge on her machine. We agreed upon a cash refund- her math was $10 low...I had to explain the calculations to her. In conclusion- LOVE Emerald Isle and plan to return, but I'll find a better seafood monger. Any suggestions? read more

This is one of the best places to get seafood in and around Emerald Isle. They have an unprecedented selection of fresh seafood, from Shrimp to Red Snapper, and Scallops to Tuna. Sure, the prices are high on some things, but for Shrimp, it's pretty competitive and the quality is superior to the rest. My family and I have been buying captain willis seafood since they opened on Emerald Isle a long time ago. When I was in this week they told me everything was local except the salmon. This is the best seafood on the island. What you cook from here is better than almost anything fried you will get in local restaurants. A typical trip here includes shrimp, scallops, homemade cold slaw and the KEY LIME PIE! Get the key lime pie! I grabbed one once while entertaining a lot of guests and they are the best I have ever had! Captain Willis is pricey, but you get what you pay for. read more

I asked them if the salmon was descaled, and they said yes; it was not descaled and that meant we couldn't eat the skin. It messed up the dish served at a family dinner, but I chuck it up to a mishap. I decided to give them a second chance years later-- I asked them twice to double-check that the salmon was descaled and they assured me twice it was. I get home and have to spend 2 hours almost-cutting myself descaling ten pounds of raw fish, and declogging the sink. read more

We've been here for fish on 3 different occasions this week. The staff are friendly and helpful. There was a particularly strong fish smell on our most recent trip there which was odd because it wasn't so strong on the previous 2 visits. The prices were identical to Willis's down the road though the selection wasn't quite as good here. Got steamed shrimp, slaw and key lime pie for a family dinner. The shrimp were cooked just right, excellent. Bought a bottle of fancy cocktail sauce by the register, it was excellent, spicier than typical of the shelf cocktail sauce, but not overly hot. The slaw was fresh but a bit too sweet for my taste, still very good. The key lime was excellent. One star off for not providing any free cocktail or tartar sauce with 3lbs of steamed shrimp and charging $16 per key lime pie. Note: It's early in the season, so the shrimp were a bit small for 'large'. read more

Love love love this place. Just finished the tuna I brought home -- and two days after purchase it still tastes like it swam to my plate. It's always spotlessly clean with no fish smell and no evidence of masking odor. They seem to also carry a good assortment of spices and sauces -- but I subscribe to the Jamie Oliver school of "less is more". (Near where they make that Salsa) I've been to Pike Place Seafood Market in Seattle (Where they throw them fishes all about, Idiots) .
