Vesta and the staff at Willis saved our annual shrimp creole dinner for 40 people. We travel to Emerald Isle every year. My aunt is usually Top Chef for our big mid-week shrimp creole meal. She was unable to join this year, so my cousin and I volunteered to sub in. We were feeling very proud of ourselves. We delegated pre-chopping the vegetables, peeled all the tomatoes, and had all of our spices ready to go. When it was time to start cooking, we realized... NO SHRIMP! We'd forgotten to run out for shrimp. I made a mad drive to Willis about 15min before closing. When I ordered 14lb of peeled and deveined shrimp, they were incredibly kind and found it exactly! They really enjoyed the adventure and story of the whole day. What can we say about the only 7th generation fishing family on Emerald Isle, who not only operate Willis Seafood Market, but also catch the fish they sell. We stopped in on Sunday and have been back everyday now for a week. From the freshly made crab cakes, to the sweetness of the shrimp caught overnight offshore in the local coastal waters, you simply can't beat the taste of their product. Now, for the business element you can't replicate, the friendly family service by family members Beverly and Steve. Satisfaction is their only concern. Probably why so many people on island shop at Willis Seafood. Everything we've eaten this week has been exceptional. Don't be mislead by another business using a similar name. Willis Seafood in Salter Pass should be your first and only stop for fresh, locally caught seafood. Oh, try one of Beverly's homemade Key Lime Pies. I've eaten key lime pie up and down the Carolina coastline and as far south as Key West. This is by far the best tasting key lime pie to have ever passed across my tastebuds. The cocktail sauce and horseradish are exceptional and make it a point to try their famous tartar sauce and cole slaw. Oh boy! They have it all!!! Stop in and meet Steve or Beverly. We've been coming to Emerald Isle for more than a decade and we ALWAYS come here to buy the seafood ingredients the designated day that my husband and I are cooking. The place is bright and clean. The fish is super high quality and always fresh. Ask for the daily catch when you come here. We have gotten fresh same day caught trigger fish and grouper and made fish tacos. These fish are fleshy and mild. They stand up to the test of the beach house grill. The market also sells a variety of other items like key lime pies, cocktail sauces and lemons and limes to go with your dinner prep. This is a great place! The fish here is fresh and delicious. Can't tell you how many times my boyfriend said he wasn't a fan of a type of fish, only to be blown away by the taste of it after getting it fresh from this market, with a modest preparation. Snapper and swordfish are new favorites. Grill, salt, old bay, not much to it! As always you can't go wrong with Mahi Mahi or Grouper, oh and scallops! The clams are alive and will move if you touch them. Make sure to get the crab cakes. Best I've had outside of a trip to DC - tons of crab in there and only $10. Our absolute favorite place for fresh seafood on the Crystal Coast. We've tried others, and they will do in a pinch, but Willis is the absolute best. This past weekend we went to find a good fish for dinner, and my super-precocious almost 4 year old announced that he wanted Swordfish. They didn't have any. 5 minutes later, the owner is telling us that they're on the phone making sure they will have swordfish for my little guy the next day. It was amazing to head home Wednesday night and cook fish that we knew had been caught Monday. So of COURSE we had to go back for it. And it was fantastic. The shrimp was fresh and sweet (we usually get the large for our low country boil). We sampled their premade crabcakes (pricy but saves you a LOT of work picking through for shells when you make your own) and key lime pie. Both were delicious. Oh, and the slaw was good, too. The staff is kind and fun and experts on local NC seafood. You could not ask for more. read more

Decent fish market with several locations on the island. Today's selection of while fish was lacking; only three varieties, but there were plenty of filets available. While I'm at the beach, I'd much prefer to buy a whole fish and have it cleaned up so that I can see the how fresh the fish looked rather than rely entirely on smell. However, there were a lot of options for the filets, and there are a lot of fish the are too big to see without carving them up, so I'd recommend you ask questions to determine freshness. Good selection of shrimp, picked and live crab, shucked oysters, etc.. Prices are higher than comparable markets in Swansboro, Cedar Point and Moorehead City, but when you factor in gas and time, it's probably break-even. I recommend you stop there but consider venturing further if you don't find what you need or are suspect of the freshness. read more

Wonderful place to get mostly local, fresh seafood. It's not cheap...but you get what you pay for! We got a bunch of thick, fleshy, delicious looking grouper for about $20/lb. Some others got salmon, which I sure don't think were local, for about $14/lb. They also had swordfish (though was told that's rare), a couple others, tons of shrimp of varying sizes, and a frozen section. We also got some crab cakes out of the fridge which were...okay. Definitely nothing amazing, but still not bad by any means. The people are friendly and eager to recommend cooking styles, so ask away. read more

Another week of awesomely fresh seafood! They had fresh live soft shells (had those 2 nights) and they clean them after you pick out the ones you want. The jumbo shrimp were fresh and locally sourced. The grouper was super fresh, local and huge fillets! Also the tuna was also fresh, local and awesome ahi grade. I would have given this location 4 to 5 stars if they addressed the issue we had with our shrimp order. We ordered over $200.00 worth of seafood snow crab legs, jumbo shrimp and scallops. . We paid the $4 per lb to have them steam the crab legs and shrimp.The snow crab legs were amazing, they were a great size, fresh, juicy and just delicious. The scallops I prepared at the house and they were fresh as well. The shrimp, lawd someone help them! They were not edible, mushy and overcooked. We called them to inquire about returning them because they will not be consumed and the Manager refused to speak with me. She sent a response saying that she cooked them herself and they were not over cooked. Really lady! They were terrible! We took it as a loss and decided to leave a review because that was not great customer service. read more

We have been visiting Pine Knoll Shores for years and have not stopped by Willis Seafood Market. I wanted to make "True" fresh fish for dinner one night so I stopped in. The owners were friendly and had just filet a pan of flounder (literally the bowl of fins and bones were sitting on the back table I could see them) This was the BEST freshest fish my family has eaten n very long time. My husband and I stopped in to buy some fresh seafood to cook the same evening. We asked the fishman what he recommended. He asked how we planned on cooking it. Based upon that information, he gave us three recommendations. We ended up getting a huge piece of grouper to share. The fish was extremely fresh! Wade Willis Seafood Market is a really good place to get your fresh fish for tonight's diner. They also sell local shrimp, scallops, blue crabs, oysters. Many times they will have shelves of cooking ingredients like "Old Bay", Italian salad dressing, salt & pepper, bread crumbs, cocktail sauce or tarter sauce. I've been getting my sea food here for many years and it has always been fresh and delicious. Although I did have to take off a star because I was very disappointed with my last trip here... I LOVE the key lime pie! LOVE IT! That's why I was disappointed when I saw the $17 price tag. $17??? When I first discovered this Emerald Isle delicacy they charged no more than $8 for the pie.. the pies are delicious and I did end up forking over the $17... this time... hopefully they will lower the price, if not I'm gonna have to find a similar recipe. read more

First time in the Emerald Isle area and was really impressed with the quality of the seafood available. I ended up buying shrimp, snapper, scallops, crab cakes and swordfish. All locally sourced. We brought our cooler and they packed it with ice for transport back to Pa. Cooked the swordfish last night and it was the best swordfish steak that my husband and I have ever had, home or restaurants. It had the texture and flavor that shouted really really fresh not frozen. I checked out a couple other seafood markets, but came back to Willis. Yes you are going to pay a little more but it's certainly worth it for the quality. read more

We got 4 doz. "no.1 and 2" steamed crabs at Willis Seafood, and steamed spiced shrimp. Maybe their fresh fish is good, but the crabs were all small enough that they probably should have been thrown back. Coming from MD, where there is a minimum size for crabs to be harvested, these were a great disappointment. The shrimp was over cooked & was not spiced. Not worth the price! read more
