My friend who is a professional chef said I had to pick up fresh fish at Clyde Phillips Seafood. It is a no frills shop with the best fish I've ever tasted! The first Clyde Phillips Seafood store opened in the 1950's. This location opened in 1963 and is still a family run business. I bought fresh salmon and lump crab cakes. The salmon was cleaned, descaled and delicious. The crab cakes were excellent! I will definitely be back for more! read more

It's a great local seafood market that you must visit and try!! This is was our first time visiting this seafood market. I am very impressed with how fresh and with the variety of the seafood they have. The prices are reasonable and affordable for the quality. We love red snapper, clams, shrimp, and scallops. The staff is really friendly, honest and provides great service. I saw the staff tell another customer that the fish they chose had a squid inside and they would not give it to them because the fish will not taste good. - Scallops are fresh with huge flavor. - Clams are a good size and reasonable for the cost. - Shrimp is huge and so good. - Tuna is really fresh and inexpensive - There are a variety of sizes of Red Snapper for your to choice ** I highly recommend red snapper and shrimp if you have no idea what you want to get from here.** But if you are looking for something else you can ask the staff if they have what you need they will bring it out for you. Whoa Nelly!! Super fantastic, real deal seafood market. No frills, but polite staff that make sure you understand what your buying before you buy it. I was visiting friends in Emerald Isle and heading back home but wanted to grab some seafood for Home. My friend said they have the best seafood and she was right. I purchased fresh shrimp and crab meat along with some bottled hot sauce. I asked if they sell ice and he gave me a huge bucket full of ice for free. Small seafood market just south east of Swansboro on the causeway/bridge which leads to Cedar Point. The daily selection is written on a whiteboard outside the front door and when I went today it boasted that everything was caught in NC waters. I was pleased with the selection. They had five kinds of whole fish, plus shrimp, crab and shellfish. While we were getting our fish cleaned (2lb flounder and a 1.25lb sea bass), four other parties came in to shop, and that's the level of turnover you want to see to ensure fresh seafood. Prices were good, too. The two fish together came in at under $20, the bass being a couple dollars less than the flounder per pound. No charge for the cleaning. It's bare-bones inside. The fish are laid out on ice and you can pick them up and examine them to check the gills, eyes and firmnes. There are a few coolers with filets and shelled shellfish. There are four random chairs for you to plop down if there is a line or for when the fishmonger needs a rest, and a sink to clean the fish. The market backs up to the river and a dock attached to the market extends a 150 feet over the water. My only gripe is that when I asked what was caught today the answer was "It's all fresh", which wasn't an answer to what I asked. Had the same issue with Willis Seafood at Salter Path, except there answer was "we get it in daily". I want to know what was caught today, not if its fresh or if someone drove it there earlier today after thawing it out. I'm perfectly fine with an answer of "this was caught yesterday" or "this was frozen on the boat as the boats go out for over a week so freezing it ensures the best quality", I just don't want to hear a deceptive answer. I've been to four seafood markets in the area over the years, and Clyde Phillips is my favorite. Will be back later in the week for shrimp and probably a few whole snappers. read more

By far the best fish market in the area. It was just what we were looking for in a fish market. It's right on the water and has fresh fish brought in throughout the day. We went back every day during our wk vacation at Emerald Isle. It's worth the little bit of the drive off the island. The prices are better that some on the island and it's not that far of a drive. This is an AUTHETNTIC Seafood Market. No tile floors or fancy shelves. No spot lights to enhance appearances. Very basic when you first walk in, but the man that runs the show, is EXTREMELY knowledgable about everything they have. Quite a variety of fresh seafood. Have been there twice this year on 2 trips down from Ohio. They head the shrimp for yoiu in addition to fileting your purchase at no charge. The prices are excellent for anything from Scallops to Blue crab. You select everything you buy. Even Blue Crap. You select each one individually. The people really make the experience as well. They want to make sure everyone gets what they want and are more than happy to make sure you are happy when you leave. I will be visiting EVERY time I am back in the area. read more

I used to have a place down on the coast and Clyde's Phillips seafood was the only place I bought seafood from. The best I remember It was not a fancy place but it was always clean and had fresh seafood. I plan to call him the first of next week to check his prices on fish and shrimp. I plan to get 100 lb of fish and about 40 lb of shrimp ( If the price is right) to freeze for next winter. I always go there and get something... be it fresh shrimp, snapper, flounder, lump crab, scallops.... this past week, I called to see if they ever get fresh squid.... they said they do sometimes and to check the next morning after the boat is in... so I dropped by to get some other stuff but they were still sorting that morning's catch and Mr. Clyde said he's save some for me if there was any! So like he said do, I called back in about an hour... and score! I've never cleaned it myself, so he showed me what to do.... it was fun and interesting to do, and the freshness was evident in the flavor... fresh off the boat! Mr. Clyde has always answered my questions and helped me learn about new fish... since I'm not a big fish lover but working on that. Don't expect some fancy bells-and-whistles fish market... this is as bare bones and authentic as it gets... exactly what you want from a fishmonger!
