I am still in awe, my skin looks so good. I could never tell you everything she did, or used, but it was great; heated towels, mist, suction, mask, lotions, and her hands and fingertips. Zero star rating should be given based on the service offered by Sara the hairstylist. She left my hair with the appearance of patchy brown and white spots that are not blended at all. First I asked for balayage. She spent 10 minutes putting in about 15 foils and then let sit under a lamp for 18 minutes and washed it out. The result was chunks of separated color very different from my roots or blended color. There is the presence of harsh lines reflecting clearly wrong technique. I have seen students in early training perform much higher quality work and customer service. When I stated that I was going to an interview and I could not leave with the hair the way it was, Sara said she was the best balayage person and knows what balayage is and that I had no idea what good hair looks like. Shocked I asked how my hair was different from balayage or highlights. She became defensive and said I don't know what I am talking about. Despite being offended I asked if she would be able to correct it. She said she had another client. So I stayed and waited if someone else could fix my hair. Sara actually had no further clients for the evening despite what she told me. I was very offended and felt disrespected from the whole process. Background: my prior balayage sessions were never ever done with foils, never was I put under a lamp, and never done in large chunks of hair. Regular balayage is a work of art and is not rushed. Went to Capristo for the first time yesterday and had a very positive experience. I've been looking for a new gal or guy to cut and color my hair ever since I broke up with my previous hair cutter and colorer. Actually, I didn't officially break up, I just ditched her. Callus, you say? Perhaps, but I don't always know what to do in this instance. Things go well for awhile, and then you get to a point where you feel the lovely person cutting your hair just isn't bringing it, isn't always doing exactly what you want, maybe even makes mistakes. When that happens to me I'll speak up and give it another try, but one bad haircut can make me a little nuts, and I start looking around. Perhaps you think me disloyal, but it's my hair, and I am not without a certain amount of vanity. Plus, this whole cut and color thing is costing a small fortune, so I feel justified in taking my biz elsewhere. I called up and asked for Sara, as someone else had posted a positive review about her. Good choice. Sara is competent, skilled and talented. She's also a very good listener. I told her my tale of woe and she came up with some suggestions and solutions that really worked. She's also got some crazy cool techniques with the scissors, and I left with exactly the head of hair that I had envisioned as perfection in my imagination. Why not then 5 stars, you ask? I'll revisit this review in the next 6 months and may up it to 5 stars, but time will tell. Hopefully the wonderfulness will continue and this will turn into a long term relationship. Yes, I'm high maintenance when it comes to my hair, thanks for noticing. Overall, I also like the salon itself. The women at the desk were helpful and friendly, although very busy and multi tasking, plus dealing with a computer that was going all wonky. I was offered coffee and water more than once. The coffee is good. This is a busy salon, and they seemed to be holding it together with some grace. If you park on the street you'll have to feed the meter after 2 hours, which Sara kindly did for me, as I had foil sticking up all over my head at the time. I've been seeing Rose for years. I have long hair that's on the thick and coarse side with just enough wave to be frizzy. I straighten and curl it at home and need a cut that will accommodate both. She makes it happen every time. The first time I saw her, she took my long, unruly mane and tamed it. At my last visit, she corrected an unwise decision with another stylist (a friend I was trying to support). When I let my grey grow in, she blended old color with new growth so I wouldn't have a line. Before she fixed it, I thought it looked ombré but I was *wrong.* So much better after she blended it with some highlights. Rose also created a spectacular updo for a big night that had people talking for days (in a good way)! If you're in need of waxing services you should ask for Lydia :) I had a manicure done here once as well while waiting for my highlights to dry and they did a good job. It's a bit more on the expensive side than some of the other places nearby but it's convenient multitasking. All in all the atmosphere of the place is really great. On Wednesdays they offer their customers free martinis which is an added bonus. Parking is great because the salon has spots reserved right in front of their building so don't pay for parking in the garage that's near it. read more

I should probably write two reviews because I absolutely love Shelly, but Roman has now jacked up my 'do twice. I won't be going back to see him again. I have been a client of Shelly's for at least 4 years and have gone to Dan Cercone's barber shop up until November 2011 because I was going from a tight cut to a razored out shag and thought that using a salon would be my best option. Using Roman was last minute and boy did I get the last minute treatment, twice. He has successfully screwed up my hair two times with a photo sample to follow of what I want on both trips. Ok, so I really wanted to like this place. There was great parking outside and the guy on the phone was SUPER nice to me. That's about as far as it goes though. As soon as I mentioned that I use natural products on my hair, you could tell the person cutting my hair was annoyed with me. My assumption was that it was because I wasn't going to buy any of their products. Like... I've already beat cancer once. Sorry I'm not going to put a bunch of unnecessary & cancer causing chemicals in my hair so I can go through that again just so they can make money. The haircut was $51. They didn't wash my hair and the haircut took about 15 minutes. I have long, very thick hair and my cuts usually take almost an hour. I tipped the stylist $10 because that's just what you do, so all in all (plus parking & the atm fee) I spent $65.50 on a 15 minute haircut in which I was made to feel questioned for my lifestyle choices. I was pretty ticked when I left, but figured they were maybe having a bad day and I'd give them a shot again next time. Then, I went to go hang out with my best friend immediately after. She commented, "You got your haircut!," so my immediate reaction was happiness-- yayy, it's cute and someone noticed! But THEN she was like "where did you go...?" with a grimace on her face. She immediately took me to the mirror in the bathroom and showed me that my brand new, 30 minute old haircut was CROOKED. The left side was at least a quarter of an inch shorter than the right side. I would go get it fixed, but I'd be afraid they'd charge me another $50 to fix their mistake. So I did NOT get a good impression from this place and will not be going back. read more

A friend and I bought the Living Social deal for a Shellac Manicure and regular pedicure. We were able to get appointments close together which was a bonus. When I arrived I don't feel I was greeted in a professional or friendly manner although they didn't have a problem with me eating a quick sushi lunch in the waiting area. I was taken back to soak for my pedicure which was completely lackluster. The nail tech knew I was a LS deal and I feel treated me as a lesser client. Wouldn't you want to give better service and try to win a client for a return visit? I left with the same calluses on my feet as I came in with. The polish application was good though. The shellac manicure was awful. The application was lumpy, I had a roll on my free edge and she didn't cure my nails long enough. A shellac mani is supposed to last 2 weeks, I was in on Wednesday and by Saturday 2 edges had peeled off. After 6 days I had lost 2 more nails. I called to see if I could get a refund or a redo. Of course the holidays were in full swing and they didn't have any appointments. I tried calling again a couple days later and was put on hold to speak with the same person as before and was never gotten back with. I ended up going to another salon getting my pedicure redone, soaking the shellac off and getting that redone as well. I did not save any money since I had to pay for the services the second time, but the new salon has my business hands down. My manisure lasted 15 days, longer if my nails hadn't grown out! I called for a brow wax and they managed to fit me in an hour before they closed, this was my first time visiting this salon. Showed up (on time) I waited a while until someone finally greeted me. I was notified that the woman with whom I had an appointment with (Shelley) wasn't going to be able to do my wax and Rose took her place. Rose was sweet and overall, everything turned out alright. I did notice quite a few things she forgot. She didn't clean off the wax left on my face or brush away the tweezed hair. Didn't apply any soothing lotion nor did she bother to use the magnifying light in the room! The bed was dirty too. Gross. She was clearly in a hurry. I don't anticipate going back there. I'm used to the amazing service I've always received from Above & Beyond Salon in Wexford. Until then, i'll continue searching for a comparable alternative here. read more

Just moved to the 'Burgh and was in search of a place to get waxed. (Italian-American...summer...get the picture?). While at MCN Salon (see my review, it's great!) I asked the stylists where to go. Nicolette said Capristo, and literally 4 other girls chimed in with "YES! See Shelly!" Darn straight: Go to Capristo, go to Shelly! Shelly is the most efficient and speedy waxist I have EVER been to. And she's not missing stuff--she got after leg hairs and armpit hairs with tweezers. Really great job. She's a talker, which I enjoyed, as she's quite funny and kept a rolling convo going on (eases the awkwardness of being next to naked in those stupid paper panties). Was generally quite satisfied with the experience and will certainly go back. I only gave 4 stars for 2 reasons: some of my hair has gotten quite fine from the years of waxing (not a myth! this can happen!) and ended up actually just breaking off not getting removed at the follicle. Thus the post-wax smoothness did not last as long as I would have liked. Secondly, it was pricier than I expected: $115 for lower legs, armpits and bikini. There are no discounts or package prices. Also, beware that you can't put a tip on your credit card, so come with cash! read more

I recently went to Capristo for a gel manicure and regular pedicure. I enjoy going to this salon, mostly because I can walk, but also because it feels luxurious and relaxing. I have had a massage here in the past, and also manicures and pedicures. The waiting area is roomy, and there are plenty of fun products to check out while you wait. The staff is friendly, and they do their best to accomodate your schedule. Julie did my gel manicure and pedicure on my most recent visit, and she was fantastic. She was really lovely to talk to, and helped me to match colors and pick something that would look nice with my skin tone. I have never experienced someone so attentive in this way. Why yes, I would love a color that compliments my skin tone! I ended up choosing a great OPI gel color, something to do with herring... They also had the matching OPI regular polish for my toes. When you go to pick out a color, they have matching sets for your to choose from, which takes away a lot of wasted time trying to match colors. The pedicure chairs at Capristo are lovely and very cushion-y! It lasted for about 45 minutes, and included a nice long soak, as well as a lengthy scrub and massage. Perfectly relaxing! Julie did a great job on my nails as well, and the OPI gel lasted at least two weeks. The prices are expensive. You won't leave there for less than $100 (with tip), but for a luxurious treat, Capristo is a good choice. read more

She did my hair for my wedding day, and I am not joking when I say I got more compliments on my hair than my dress. She did all of my bridesmaids hair and my mom's hair. The 5 girls had completely different hair requests, from a fabulously big, side pony with lots of cascading curls, to a sleek chignon. They all looked fantastic and their hair really suited their personalities. My mom was my favorite of the day, she looked GORGEOUS. I can't thank Anita enough for that. She's been my hairstylist for almost 5 years now, we've done everything from long red hair, to short blonde pixie cut, Ombre, you name it, we've done it all and I've loved every style I've gotten from her. Usually Lydia does my eyebrows well I go in for an appointment I had scheduled and Lydia wasn't there due to food poisoning which is totally fine I just wish somebody would've called and let me know that she wasn't gonna be there literally me and two other ladies were waiting for her and the staff had no idea she wasn't in that day they were literally searching for her calling her and found out she was home sick with food poisoning so they had another girl do my eyebrows which she totally didn't know what she was doing! My eyebrow where a mess! Dana was my hair stylist for awhile, but now she's gone and I was wondering where she went. I have straight hair and she was always great at giving it a more layered look. She always knew what to do and I received complimets after getting a cut. I liked her approach to styling my hair. She had a wonderful personality too and a great sense of humor. This place is AWFUL. I mean, so so bad. This is the 2nd time I went. The first time was awful too, but I figured I'd try again with another nail tech. Never again. FIrst of all, the nail tech did not introduce herself, shake my hand or do anything of the sort when she came to get me from the lobby. She rushed me into picking colors for my nails and toes. Water temp on the chair got too cold too fast. Pedicure overall looks pretty good though. The manicure is what gets me. I told her I have really oily nails so the gel polish always looks like it's grown out unless you pay special attention to putting the base coat on. She did very happily do that. However, they still look grown out - as if I'd had my nails done four days ago, not 40 minutes ago. They're also lumpy and uneven because she told me the color I picked peels from the tips so she had to put extra on... what!? There was a chunk of dry polish on one nail I asked her to smooth and she simply sanded it with a nail file, and didn't use acetone or anything to remove the polish and repaint. so basically it looks like it chipped. My mind is blown. At checkout, the girl was so frazzled that she repeatedly asked me "who helped you today?" "what do you need?" she seemed so bothered to have to get my coat when she insisted i give it to her when i got there. she seemed bothered to leave a tip at the desk for my tech. at one point i think she rolled her eyes at me. she was clearly stressed, so i urged her to help other clients first, but that didn't improve her attitude with helping me. the entire time, all the employees are there buzzing around, looking like they're stirring up drama, and not paying any attention to the clients. not to mention they all look so trashy / yinzer. at one point my tech was whispering with another stylist while doing my toes and at another point she was asking the other nail tech to send her pics from the night prior. so unprofessional. I have one Living Social coupon left for this place ($30 for gel mani and pedi seemed like a great deal so i bought 3) but now that I've had two bad nail jobs from two different girls, I'll be asking for a refund on my 3rd coupon. read more

Kim is the best! I continued my quest for a hair stylist and ended up here after yelp reviews and recommendations from friends. I started with a simple blow out and consultation regarding the hot mess which was my hair courtesy of Stonewater Salon. She gave the best shampoo massage I have had and blew out my curly hair perfectly in no time [took 2 hours with the color consultation]. Plus my hair had body and wasn't too flat at the end. My blow out only set me back $30 as well - awesome! I made an appt for a relaxer the following month. Her recommendation was for the keratin treatment instead of a relaxer to prevent further damage than what was caused by the previous color job. It only took her 2 hours and 15 min to do the ENTIRE process and it was beautiful. I can still walk out on a rainy day without any frizz or change in my styling over one month later and I cannot believe it. My blow drying time has been cut in half and this is from a skeptic. It did cost much more than the relaxer price I was expecting, but I will probably only need to do it every 4 months or so. The next month, I scheduled for a cut to get my layers redefined. Again, Kim was quick and efficient. I told her I wanted to keep my length and she respected this and somehow cut my layers to make my hair appear even longer! This time my appt was only a little over an hour since my blow drying time was much faster. Since she did so well, I decided not to wait another whole month for her to fix my color. She had earned her stripes though and I finally felt safe going under the chemical processing with Kim at the helm the following week. I am proud to say I no longer have the tiger stripe just natural highlights as I wanted from the beginning. However, I will still need to return as I wanted more of an ombre which I cannot appreciate right now as well as a more neutral brown than auburn. Price was a little steep for not being 100% satisfied but doable. Now I am super excited that I have found a hair stylist that can do it all - blow out, cut, color, and straightener!! I've been going to Capristo for awhile now, but recently changed stylists because my previous stylist left. I was given an appointment with Vanessa and am so, SO glad she cut my hair. She gave me an incredible cut that has made my thick, wavy hair effortlessly chic. (Emphasis on the effortless - seriously, I can shower, throw some light product in my hair, and viola, I'm ready to go). She took about 7-8 inches off and used 3 different scissors to give me an individualized cut that fit my face shape and hair texture. I'm really please with the cut she gave me and will definitely be going back to her! On another note - I've been going to Lydia to get my eyebrows waxed for years and she's the best in the city. I had a sudden plan coming up for the weekend, and I realized I needed a haircut. My favorite place is MCN salon, and they were completely filled that day. Having no other option, I called up capristo and they gave me an appointment. The lady who did my haircut, didn't seem to be interested in my opinion and giving me something nice which I desired. I asked her to trim my layers up well, and give some shorter layers in the front. I have very dense hair, it takes some time to get the layers all done. After she cut the hair, it seemed like there was more to be done, but her next client had already arrived. She hurriedly blow dried my hair. She said, I can go back and if I don't seem to like the layers, I can come back again within a week and she will do it again for me. I was travelling after that, for some weeks so obviously didn't get to go there again. So 1) No one has the time to go back and spend another hour getting your hair done over again 2) Everybody's hair is different, and some people's hair needs more time, so they should arrange the next client accordingly right? Instead of sending you away and asking you to come again. Plus it is pricey. ($55 for a hair cut I wasn't satisfied with). I moved to the Pittsburgh region to go to graduate school at Pitt. I was living in shadyside and looked online for a place that did balayage style highlights in the Pittsburgh region. There were a couple that came up but this one seemed to have really good reviews. I am a natural blonde ,but over the years my hair has become darker with age. I decided to try this salon because it was close within walking distance and in my budget (since I am in college). I by no means am cheap when it comes to my hair but I cannot afford to spend 200$ every 8 weeks. After taking the time to call and confirm their price quote of 65$, which is stated online, I scheduled an appointment. Upon arriving I checked in and waited for a girl named Amanda. After waiting 20 minutes I was finally greated by a friendly girl and we went to discuss what I wanted done with my hair. She recommended that I get some type of highlight and also a base lift to get my roots lighter. I was also planning on getting a haircut. I then asked if what she suggested was going to cost more. It then came out that her highlights were actually going to be 95$, 20$ for this base lift treatment plus the haircut of 51$ plus tip. If I wasn't getting the base lift my roots were going to be dark which was exactly what I was trying to avoid. The total would come to around 170$ before tip. She also informed me that she was one of the lowest in price in the salon. I was very appalled that I was quoted a price and that I was not honored that price upon arriving. A 50$ difference in price is a lot of money to me when I can only work part time. I ended up leaving as soon as she quoted me the correct price. I felt bad that I took up Amanda's time in her schedule since she wasn't going to be making any money , but I just could not afford to do that. They might do very good work on hair, I cannot speak on that front since I left ,but I have an issue with businesses falsely advertising prices. I wasted an hour of my day to not have anything done to my hair. Thankfully I asked before getting my hair done. Be warned that you should get a correct price quote before getting anything done to your hair here. Worst experience ever :( i did a hair cut and color in this salon i show her a picture of what i want and talk about the cost and every thing she told me it will cost 170 $ after we finish the hair color is soo baaaad its not even close to be acceptable she agree that i need to do it again and the same orange color tone still in my hair. after tow days working for acceptable result i was not happy for the result she said we can't do more coz it will damage my hair .. The other shock when i saw the bill they almost double the price when i ask why??!! She told me they charge me every time she try to reach the color and fade the orange tone .. I went back a couple months later for a follow-up trim with Kim. Overall, my hair turned out well like last time, but she was running behind again by 30 minutes with the last girl before she got to me. The shampoo girl sprayed water in my face multiple times, and overall the service was not as good as a couple of months beforehand. I've heard more consistency about MCN salon's services and it will be at least 10-15 bucks less than what I'm paying at Capristo without the attitude. Wow, just spoke to someone at Capristo who was very rude. I have an Amazon Local deal that was given to me as a gift and after talking to them on the phone I decided not to go there. I think they probably treat people with these kinds of deals as second class customers. read more
