I wouldn't recommend them if you have curly or wavy hair, in my experience they are not skilled in that area. The quality of color and highlights depends on the stylist you have, but I think that is the same for any salon and not specific to them. I came here at the beginning of February to finally cut off all my split ends. I live in the same building that Tula is located in, so I walked past it every day and finally decided to give it a try! It was very easy to set up an appointment online, since someone would email you back fairly quickly with possible times for you to pick from. I got paired with Melissa, who was amazing! For $65, you get your hair washed and conditioned with natural and organic Aveda products, and receive a stellar cut. Melissa even styled/blew my hair out afterwards. Sometimes with haircuts, they look good only the first week or so and then once your hair grows out, the style doesn't look as great, but even after almost a month, my hair looks fantastic and feels so healthy. I appreciated the excellent customer service and friendliness of the staff--and also the complimentary and relaxing mint tea! So last night I have the pleasure of getting some pampering done by Laura at Tula. It was my first time at the salon and she made it a fabulous experience! When your first walk in their quaint salon in Squirrel Hill, you feel relaxed as it's casual, clean and not too uptight like some city salons. Their vintage decor gave it an interesting appeal and they even support local artists on the walls. Which is all my speed, for sure. I decided to try the brow/lash tint, yet I was a bit nervous about it. Laura was professional, confident and talked me thru the process. I didn't want my brows to be too bold and she tinted them the perfect amount. I literally cannot stop looking at them, if you're on the fence.. Just do it! It will give you an extra boost of confidence in your look. The lash tint makes me use less mascara or none at all, I say that's a win! I rounded out the evening with a haircut. During the hair wash I even got a wonderful scalp massage during the process. I was just looking for a trim and some long layers as I'm growing my hair out for my wedding. After drive past Tula so many times, I finally went there for the first time couple days ago to get my hair colored and cut. I'm really impressed with the result. Please check the pricing carefully. Even though I have short hair they offer no discounts. I only had color applied to my roots and had a few highlights painted in. With cut, my bill was $215. Before tip. Surely this was wrong considering how little product was used and how little time I took. Nope. I contacted the manager. She was polite, but pricing is pricing, bottom line. Also, I brought in pictures showing a french bob, but when finished I looked more like middle age mom. Very poofy. I was able to work with the cut today and restyle it better, but for that price, I want to vomit. It's a shame, because with shorter hair I need to get in more frequently. The gf and I came here to get a hair cut and she also had her hair colored - we both loved this place. The inside looked very urban outfitters which was cool. The styling products, shampoos, and color dyes were all natural and organic. It felt nice to not have chemicals running all over the scalp and the gf liked not having to inhale all the harsh smells that come with getting your hair colored. The gf had Steph do her cut and color. She did a really great job - really listened to everything she had to say and was sure not to cut off more than she asked for. I had Becky and she also did a really great job for my hair. I didn't give much direction and my hair turned out great. I really wanted to love this place. REALLY BAD. I love the interior and whole layout of the salon, but not my experience with hair color or my eyebrows. My stylist was sweet though I did notice she was attempting to match color to the faded color in my hair that had grown out. I was trying to explain what color I wanted and the faded color was not what I was asking for. I wanted more red and I got brown. I think she was looking for me to say a key word like violet (which was more appropriate for the color I actually wanted, which I figured out after the fact), but I felt like as a professional that maybe she could have given me better options to go off of. When I got my eyebrows done, a little piece of my eyebrow was missing at the end and the nice lady who was doing my eyebrows said it was only the difference of one hair missing, which can happen but it looked like a chunk was missing from my left one. This was my first time trying a salon in Pittsburgh as I had moved from somewhere else and had a wonderful stylist back home. I absolutely loved this place. First off - really great, bright, creative reclaimed/vintage decor, which I know doesn't really say anything about the services, but I just don't like going to salons that are all black and sleek and shiny. I like going to salons that are quirky or look like how I might decorate my apartment. The gal who cut my hair - Lena, I believe - was a delight. She really took time cutting my bangs, which I appreciate because I've had experiences where a stylist will cut them too short too quickly and I end up looking like Small Wonder for two weeks. 3.75 stars - I am very conflicted about my experiences at Tula. It is a friendly and clean salon. They're always busy when I'm there. I first visited on August 6th - I really needed a fresh haircut before I went on vacation. Tula was able to fit me in on the same day I contacted them! I was so excited thanks to the great reviews on Yelp - and the fact that Tula is about a 5 minute walk from my apartment & work. I was greeted upon arrival and sipped on a glass of infused water while I waited for my stylist. Lena was phenomenal! She really listened to me pour open my heart and soul about my hair and what kind of style I wanted from my visit. The cut was perfect - just what I wanted. No fuss, no muss, and $60. I was in and out very quickly, with an appointment scheduled for 3 weeks later about a color consultation. This was a hands-down IDEAL experience at Tula. I loved my cut and was so excited to continue working with them on my hair. The day of my consultation, I had to cancel my appointment via voicemail, but asked that they call me with availabilities to reschedule. And they never did. A few weeks later, my hair needed trimmed and I was (mentally) ready for my consultation. I scheduled my appointment for September 24th. First, I met with Lena to discuss dyeing my hair back to my natural hair color (a dark blonde/light brown that I've lightened over the years), but with golden undertones so it wouldn't look too ashy (bad hair color experience in college with this result). She also showed me color swatches of the dyes she was going to use. Lena set to mixing my color and then applied it to my head. After waiting the standard amount of time, my hair was washed, but more dye needed to be applied to the length of my hair, which added more time to my wait. Next, I was back in the styling chair for my trim and style. Now, I wear glasses and I'm pretty blind without them, so I had no idea what my hair color looked like during the style. Upon reveal, I was shocked to see how [dark brown] my hair was. It was definitely [not] what I was expecting or what I wanted. I paid my hefty bill (which was almost double what I was expecting to pay) and went home. Again, I was shocked about my bill and contacted the company about my receipt. The owner kindly responded to me with the individual prices of my hair coloring and my cut. Cut? Yes, I was charged for a cut ($60) when about half of an inch of hair was removed from my head. I understand that they are a business and everyone needs to be paid, etc. But when I asked for a partial refund for the cut, since I was told I was being given a trim, not a cut, I was denied because "We don't have a different price point for a 'trim' versus a major cut." I did not mention my dissatisfaction with my hair from the salon, just that I felt that a trim was not worth $60. I knew there was no arguing with them - it wasn't worth the time and they already had my money. It's better to just move on! I am not sure if I will return to Tula. It may take a while for the bad taste of this last experience to wash out of my mouth. About as long as it'll take for me to wait for their dye job to fade. read more

I have lived in Pittsburgh for about four months and have put off the daunting task of finding my "Pittsburgh Salon". To say I was nervous about looking is an understatement. I started my quest on Yelp and came across the reviews for Tula; I just have to say that they met and exceeded my expectations! I called and scheduled my appointment and they were able to fit me in the same afternoon! My hair was long, dead, and flat. Lena worked her magic on me and I have happy, healthy, hair again. I love Aveda salons. You walk in and it smells so heavenly. Plus, I like that they make efforts to be eco-friendly. They were understaffed when I went in, so I have to say the service was a bit lacking. The other lady waiting had tea offered to her before I got there, but no one offered me a drink. I was super thirsty so I ended up having to wait at the desk for a bit and ask if I could help myself to a glass of water. Then, as I got a glass from the drawer, this other stylist came and grabbed the cup from my hand. I thought she meant I wasn't allowed to help myself, but it turns out she was just trying to get me water from the back. It was just an awkward situation and I didn't like that the other lady was offered a drink and I wasn't. Also, my stylist had to stop in the middle of my cut to help a customer ring up a sale. I heard that day they had two people out though, so I'm sure it's not always like that. Lena was my stylist and I felt super comfortable with her. I like that we had some nice conversation and she really wanted to make sure that I liked the cut and listened to my concerns. She even invited me to her art party at the salon, which I think will be quite fun! (Even though I am only giving it 4 stars right now, I've already recommended Tula to a friend. I was in Pittsburgh last weekend for a wedding, and had the pleasure of having my hair primped by Laura! Since my hair does not hold curl well, I asked Laura to curl my hair tightly so it would stay curly enough for the 5 pm ceremony. Laura gave me a head full of beautiful curls, and pinned them to one side. Miraculously, my hair stayed curled until the end of the reception (midnight!) without needing any additional styling throughout the evening! After moving around from DC to NYC for a few years and many stylists of varying skill, by the time I got to Pittsburgh my hair was busted, way too blonde, and basically straw! Becky listened carefully to my vision and made it a reality. She was totally creative! She used a combo of low light foils to pull my root through, balayage highlights, and a toning mask because I was basically wanted the look of balayage on my natural hair, but I walked in with out of control platinum blonde. Many stylists would have claimed what I wanted was impossible, but she went for it! She was super nice and funny, to boot. Bonus, she didn't give my the stern talk many a blonderexic's have received at the hand of an Aveda stylist. No lectures about how badly my hair had been treated... just onwards and upwards! The salon has a great vibe and everyone was friendly and polite. There is easy street parking and I felt like the price was SO fair considering it was a total hair makeover. I was glad about that, because I knew I wanted to tip Becky as generously as I could afford because she turned my busted, brassy, and in some places WHITE blonde hair into a beautiful honey that looks natural.
