capt greg had great crabs now someone else is cooking crabs and running the operation. the crabs were horrible. I bought 2 dozen #1 males. They were full of water. When you pulled off a claw, water ran out of the shell. The meat was watery and terrible. Don't waste your money. Heads up, you are supposed to steam crabs not boil them in water.These people do not know how to cook crabs. read more

I have been a fan of Captain Greg's for quite some time. I have even referred quite a few people there over the years. They usually don't disappoint with the size of the crab, and the flavor of the crab used to be on point. They have been in Mechanicsville for years. The last couple of times I visited left me questioning my loyalty. I have been trying a couple of places in the area, and maybe I'm particular about crab and how it's prepared. When I buy anything, regardless of what it is, customer service can ruin the experience. I purchased crabs from here a couple of weeks ago and the lady at the register refused to put the crab seasoning on the crabs (I thought that was the idea). I hate a bland crab! I have tried Crab's, crab boils, sauteed crabs, steamed crabs etc... Yes size does matter, but not if they are bland. During the second visit, I was happy the owner was present ( he's nicer). He tried to accommodate me, however I requested female crabs (my preference) and when I arrived home I had male Crab's. Yes ! They were nice and meaty, but tasted like rubber. I was so disappointed, and upset, but at this point I was over it. It's a shame because I had been hankering some Crab's and 3 day's later, I still have the Crabs. I tried to doctor them up but, no bueno! I have purchased Crab's from places I didn't expect to like, and they were better than Captain Greg's! We bought a dozen yesterday because Captain Greg said they where so heavy he had to adjust cooking times. We started with eating the small ones first. It was absolutely pasty and mush. After trying a third one, it was obvious they all had been soooo over cooked. We would have happily taken them back but 18 minutes after our purchase they put up a note of Facebook saying they had sold out. What an awful experience. On Saturday June 11th, I ordered and purchased a dozen and a half number 1 male crabs, but what I received was something far less. Never mind that the crabs were dry, unseasoned, and mostly tasteless. (I suspect my order was not from a fresh catch). It was the misrepresentation by the saleswoman that galls me most. I guess I'll just chalk it up to $60 wasted. Oh well. Future buyers please beware and thoroughly inspect your purchase from this merchant before you leave the store. Beware! Just went to Capt. Greg's to buy 2 dozen LIVE crabs. We have purchased live crabs in the past with no problems. However, today the box of 2 dozen looked short by probably a half dozen, while trying to do a count, I found an obviously dead crab, out of the next 5 crabs checked, found 2 more DEAD CRABS. When notifying the clerk, she said they were just cold and always like that. I said when the mouth plates are hanging open, it's dead. She got the owner who came in with a couple of crabs in hand, legs hanging and mouth plates open. He tried to say they were just cold. I informed him that I grew up as a waterman and I know a dead crab (mouth plates open and legs drooping). I showed him the first dead one and he said, "yeah that one is dead, but the rest are just cold". Never offered an apology or showed any concern as we said no thanks to the sale and walked out. Everyone was very rude and could have cared less. Cooking dead shellfish is a very serious health issue, crabs begin decomposing almost immediately after death. Look it up! If this establishment will attempt to sell DEAD CRABS as Live, then it should make everyone wonder how many DEAD CRABS are being steamed and sold. read more

Captain Greg did it again. Originally from NC we find it hard to find barely decent blue crabs Captain Gregs so far has had the best blue crabs my family has had in forever. His blue crabs maintain a fresh seafood taste not watered down like most. His staff have been super friendly and very accommodating with us driving so far. Sent my husband to pick up a couple pounds of snow crab legs on 3/15. Was shocked at how HUGE they were, the claw was about 4" in diameter. They were $9.99 a pound but that's the same as Kroger & Martin's and their's didn't look nearly as good. It's a great idea to support a local business so I hope everyone will give this market their business. read more
