Came here for some seafood while visiting Richmond. The restaurant is located in a strip mall with plenty of parking. Due to COVID, the place had tables and chairs for inside dining, but they were stacked to the side and they only offered pickup orders. We ordered the fish and shrimp platter, which came with fries or coleslaw. We got the fries. We were a few minutes short of the lunch special, where you could get the the same thing, for 3 dollars cheaper (we paid 9 and some change), but with smaller portions. The kitchen is located near the front register and you can watch while your food is being prepared. The menu is, of course, heavy with seafood options in addition to steamed crabs and crabmeat for sale. The fish was thin and fried perfect and crispy. The shrimp as well. Fries were golden and good as well. All in all, a good place to grab a quick bite of seafood when in the area. read more

Came here right after the airport wanting some seafood. Saw it was highly recommended. First time I was lead wrong. I ordered the steamed shrimp medium spicy the shrimp was barely seasoned seems like they just tossed some seasoning on it and it wasn't marinated. The shrimp wasn't even deveined. We also got the fish sandwich it was pretty much two slices of fish tossed between slices of white bread. The fish had bone in it which is odd for a fish sandwich they are usually deboned. read more

Just finishing take out dinner. I got the beef bulging I with side of white rice and Cole slaw. The beef is sweet and delicious. I am not a expect on Korean-food. But I'm happy with the beef. If you blink, you may miss SiStar Seafood which is tucked away in the shopping center next to a Puritan Cleaner. The small restaurant primarily does takeout but has a small seating area if you want to dine in which we did. Overall, the seafood tasted fresh and was cooked well. They cook everything to order which is a huge plus so you are able to adjust the seasoning to your preference. I like minimal seasoning on my seafood so I told them to keep the seasoning on the lighter side. The fried oysters were so plump and juicy with the Panko breading being very light and crispy. Delicious! Their blue crabs were fresh and the meat was nice and sweet. Their shrimp were also very fresh and decently sized. We also tried some of their non-seafood items which I thought were decent. Their bulgogi, though not the best I've had, would satisfy a craving. I usually like my meat to be more charred and crispy whereas theirs has more of a steamed/wet texture. Their french fries were just frozen crinkle fries which was a bit disappointing. I sampled one on the way home, turned around and went right back. Less than 5 minute. Owner wanted to explain oysters to me and refund policy. The worst part of my experience at SiStar is having the food sit in the back, forcing me to smell it the whole car ride back home. I ordered 6 Pieces of Korean Fried Chicken, with the Seafood Platter. (Oysters, Scallops, Shrimp) It tasted just as amazing as it smelled. The Korean Fried chicken was glazed beautifully, and was very sweet and savory. It had an amazing crust, and the 6 pieces was well priced. The Seafood Platter was all done Tempura style, breaded and fried. Each piece was so juicy, especially the scallops. Got the seafood platter and the food was great. Although the fries seemed like frozen ones, they fried it really well. Their sauce is a bit sweet for me, but I'm sure many might like it and it comes on the sauce so it doesn't touch the platter. I would have given them 5 stars but took one out because their fish has bones, so watch out when you eat the fish. I was in Richmond for only the weekend and simply had to have as much Soul Food and Seafood as possible. I live in Arizona! Of course I Yelp'd every single place I decided to try. I typed in "Steamed Shrimp" and Sistar Seafood was the first to pop up near me. I search through the first 4 or 5 reviews and saw "Mel C.'s" review and picture of the side of shrimp. Holy Crap! They looked delicious. Her pic and review sealed the deal for me. Hey Mel C girl :) I had intentions on ordering a half pound of steamed spicy shrimp and a half dozen of male crabs. When I arrived Saturday evening the line was slightly out of the door, but it went quick! Both the female and male crabs were reasonable priced, so were the shrimp. I got to the front of the line and ordered a half pound of shrimp and a half dozen pound of male crabs with heavy seasoning. She said they were out, that was disappointing. I'm not a huge fan of female crabs but I NEEDED some crabs so I went on and ordered a half dozen. In total I spent about $20 bucks. Not bad at all! While waiting someone came to pick up a bushel of crabs. They looked delicious. I was happy. Then another woman came to return 2 dozen crabs. She was pretty upset. She said they were too mushy, hardly any meat, watery and didn't have flavor. Then I got disappointed again. The minute I got home to dive into my crabs, I noticed how small and lightweight they were. I broke one leg off - no meat, a second leg off - no. I picked up a different crab and broke one leg off - no meat, a second leg off - no meat. So I knew what that meant. I continued diving into the crabs, nothing changed, no meat. I ate 3, it wasn't worth it to me to finish picking the other 3 so I tossed them. The shrimp was ok, but didn't look like Mel C's lol I'm giving this place stars because I really do believe I may have caught them on an "off" night, not to mention they were closing within the next 45 minutes. Whoa this got such high marks I guess I set my expectation high. We ordered the Korean wings half the whole wing at a dollar a pop. No way! Hardly any sauce or seasoning in the wing. Tasted hard and old. As did the fish we ordered. Like they half cooked it and let it sit around in grease and when someone orders they finish frying. Tasteless and way too oily. They only thing decent was the shrimp. I wouldn't go back. Thankful I had country donuts around the corner to cleanse my palet. read more

Korean BBQ as good as it gets Behind the IHOP, there's a little shop called SiStar Seafood. While fresh fish is on display, the star is the Korean BBQ. Between the kalbi and the bulgogi, I chose the bulgogi ($10). My mistake was leaving the container on the drive home. The smell of bbq filled the car. I came home to tender, marinated beef paired with crunchy kimchi as good as they make it in LA and Seoul and big enough for two. Korean bbq and kimchi are both acquired tastes. Not a bad place to get a quick bite. I wouldn't recommend eating in since the place is a little small. There's about 5-8 tables. Most people order to go. My family and I chose this spot because it was down the street from our Air BnB and it had pretty good reviews. We had the seafood salad (which they made fresh), the seafood platter with hush puppies and coleslaw, and the Bulgogi plate with rice and kimchi. We also ordered some shrimp fried rice to go. The seafood salad was so fresh and went perfect with the deep fried seafood. It had the perfect amount of mayo and tasted really good with the slight sweetness and crunch from the apples and celery. The seafood platter was also pretty good. The fried scallops were the best IMO. My mom and sister enjoyed the fried oyster also. The fish and shrimp were average. The coleslaw was a good refresher from all the fried food. The hushpuppies were a little over done as it was hard to bite into. The bulgogi plate was average. Nothing special to say about the bulgogi. The kimchi could have been crunchier and the flavor was pretty mild. The shrimp fried rice had a lot of flavor and there was the portions were pretty good. I was tired of all the airport hotel food and usual chain...this Korean place was just right answer. I showed up just minutes before closing, the owner was already taking a part stove for deep cleaning (great sign that they care cleanness of kitchen). He and his wife didn't show any reluctance, instead with full of smile took my order, reassembled stove, and start cooking. And keep in mind bugogi could be messy. That was simply a nice gesture and shows their good personality which reflected on quality of food. Food: great, awesome, home style Korean. Great portion and well marinated with right fresh ingredient. This place also sells fish, great price and looked fresh (wish my hotel room had kitchen.) There are several table and chairs to dine in. Get the Bulgogi half the YELP review states, their lunch combos are very tasty said several of the YELP reviews and of course I get neither one of them. I needed a quick meal before my flight and this place was within a mile and had high remarks. The place is tucked right behind IHOP and if you blink you might just miss it! The place is mainly a take out place but there are several tables for dining in. In addition to their lunch combos which include shrimp fried rice, katsu, seafood platters, etc they also carry fresh shrimp, clams, oysters, and crab if in season. I got the shrimp platter which came with two sides, I chose rice and Kimchi. The food is made to order which I really appreciated and had to wait about 5 minutes before my food was ready. My meal costs $7.99 which was very reasonable considering it came with 12 sticks of shrimp. As you can see from the pictures, these are minced shrimp kabobs and not your typical fried shrimp. The lady behind the register was really nice and recommended dishes/sides if you didn't know what to get. I saw two more guys in the back who did all the cooking and prepping of the fresh seafood. Unfortunately, I was in a rush and didn't get a chance to eat it until about 30 minutes later. The shrimp was good, but not great. It was cooked well and not dried out as I thought it would be. The kimchi kinda soaked my fried shrimp so it made it a little soggy. I am sure my shrimp platter would have tasted a lot better if I ate it almost immediately. I would be really hard pressed to call this a Korean place, because aside from the Korean owners, there were only five dishes under the "Korean Food" category. And of the five dishes, only bulgogi was truly Korean (I didn't see the kalbi on the menu mentioned in other Yelp reviews), since katsu and teriyaki are really more Japanese (and teriyaki perhaps arguably Japanese-American). Most of the other menu items are seafood items that you would find at a seafood fast food joint. Nevertheless, the Korean lady working the register (and co-owner alongside the Korean male cook) was extremely friendly. She strongly suggested bulgogi with kimchi and rice as sides. She asked if I was Korean, but I said I was Taiwanese. I occasionally get asked, because even among Asians I guess I can be a bit ambiguous-looking, plus I've been told that my pronunciation of Korean words is fairly good (and I must have said "bulgogi" very accurately). =P Without a doubt, the food was very tasty. It took a while since they grilled the bulgogi to order, but it was very fresh as a result. The portion was also very generous, and I saw from other people's orders that this is true for fried seafood dishes as well. The restaurant itself is very simple, and although there are a few tables, I think the majority of customers get takeout. We had to return 3 dozens of steamed #2 blue crabs because they tasted old. Gotta understand that we don't play when it comes to eating our crabs. When we confronted her about the crabs, she admitted that they get them fresh, steam them, freeze them, thaw them and re-steam. Cooking crabs in this manner is unacceptable. I have had my eye on this mom and pop for quite some time anf finally decided to give it a try. I did not dine in, but ordered take-out. This establishment is a seafood market and restaurant that offers a variety. I ordered a small portion of seasoned shrimp and the shrimp fried rice. The service was friendly. As I turn to leave with my order, I requested a few packets of soy sauce for my rice and as the owner is handing me these packets of soy sauce, she says "try it with no soy sauce first". Oh boy! Was she right, the rice was delicioso! This was the best fried rice that i've had in Richmond. The shrimp on the side was okay, since the spices were overbearing and salty. In the past 3 years, I've gotten carryout from SiStar 6 times, most recently yesterday. I almost always get the fried scallops, and they were very good until yesterday. They seem to have changed their breading; the breading now has a curious (but still crunchy) knobby texture. And their frying oil was rancid. Unfortunately for me, my sides were also fried. French Fries: Crinkle cut; no doubt frozen. Onion Rings: Seem to be commercial frozen onion rings, also. I was belching rancid oil for several hours afterward. SiStar has one custom that I like, and have not seen elsewhere: The dinner-sizes clamshells, perhaps 8x8 inches, have an annoying trait of capturing moisture from the food, and make the food wilty. To alleviate this, SiStar tears a hole in each of the 4 corners of the lid. Looks odd, but lets the moisture vent. On the plus side, although the store may be slightly difficult to find, it has ample parking in a dedicated lot. The store is always clean. However, I did not like the breading. Very bland and left a lot to be desired. I tried adding salt, cocktail sauce & ketchup, but I just was not feeling them. Kind of disappointed because fried oysters are one of my favorites & I was having a serious craving for them. The first thing I always notice about a seafood store is the smell and simply put this store didn't have one! As I looked around I saw a spotless store! Behind the counter was a man with an apron on preparing fish. And a bubbly woman spoke from behind the counter. I immediately decided that she must have been the woman that answered the phone when I got lost trying to find the place. It's a very small store in the same shopping center as Kroger on Laburnum. It's right behind Puritan cleaners and hidden from the street view by IHOP. It's really not hard to find and I feel it's worth looking for. For around $10 I got half a pound of steamed spiced shrimp, 3 fried fish filets and a huge order of fries. The order was quick and within 5 minutes I had my hot food. There's a small seating area with about 6 or 7 small tables and a self serve seasonings area. The fresh seafood display was small and only had a few different types of fish but it was clean and well lit and for the size of the restaurant it was a respectable assortment. It's tucked behind the IHOP, across from a Jiffy Lube and a place selling hair. SiStar has a fried seafood menu with a small Asian menu. I had the Bulgogi with kimchi and rice and it was delicious. Husband and kiddos had fried shrimp with fries. The proprietor also brought out some tater tots and dumplings as an appetizer. The portion of shrimp was HUGE, both kids and the husband could have split it. It was also very very fresh. I couldn't eat all my Bulgogi and I hurt the proprietor's feelings, she was asking me if anything was wrong and chastising me. It was very funny, I had to reassure multiple times that it was delicious but I did not have a big appetite. This is not a fancy place, if you object to eating out of styrofoam with plastic utensils pick another place. I walked in confused with the fresh seafood provided along with Chinese and Korean dishes offered. Some dishes only available for lunch or dinner depending on what you ordered.
