Owhere do I start..... First visit, I was in the mood for some seafood and this place sounded great. I arrived and two persons were at the front door pretending to be hostesses... No greetings and a look in their face like what do we do now. One proceeded me to a table with no verbiage or a welcome face r that matter. Looked like they were trying to pull off a Five Star and was modern looking throughout including the dinner wear, which was great.... I asked about the oyster's Rockefeller and was told by the waitress they were well received so I proceeded to order Oyster Rockefeller, crab legs and she crab soup just to round things out. The oysters were nothing more than a ball of cheese, way too much cheese, never even tasted a hint of oyster. stay away The crab legs were decent, one pound consisted of three clusters of decent size. The she crab soup was tasteless and I would go as far to say almost tasted like cardboard. I had asked the waitress to bring me a Togo container when I ordered but it was so bad I tasted it twice and let the bowl sit. The waitress didn't inquire about the meal in any sense of the word, so all in all a two star experience. Owner must be using it for a tax write off....sad actually because better management could really turn the place around.....and Mechanicsville could use a good seafood restaurant!! Soooo, I'm not hooked on Hook. First the food: Granted, I'm not a seafood lover, but the couple times I've been here, my "landlubbing" meals haven't been great. I'm sure the seafood/fish is good, my hubby liked his imperial crab salmon! I ordered the Hooked burger, and I subbed the pepper jack cheese for American. The presentation was nice, but the burger was bland and lacked seasoning. Montreal steak seasoning on this burger would have done wonders! Or some Worcestershire sauce or steak sauce... the chef needs to up his "turf" game! The lettuce was wilted, as was my spirit. The fries were ok, a tad a salt please, and I'm not trying to be "salty"! The atmosphere: beautiful blues and turquoises surrounded us and the ocean decor was lovely! We loved our cozy booth and the subtle music added a nice touch! Outside in the warmer weather, the music and outdoor seating is inviting! The service: Robin was spectacular! Efficient, friendly, and accommodating. She welcomed us with a warm smile and gave us the happy hour specials! Applause!! The prices: For what you get, in today's market the prices were reasonable. A unexpected knockout of a seafood spot in Mechanicsville! My husband and I are partial to the Riptide Tower, so much so we recently had one each. Wine selection is good, and drinks are on the sweet side (as would be expected for the area), but the bartenders will just to your preferences. Either way, don't come for the cocktails. Come for the half-shell oysters and what might be the best cold-water lobster tail in all of Richmond. Don't miss their side of mac and cheese either. The Hooked Seafood & Raw Bar never disappoints as this is a favorite of ours. For starters we enjoyed a delicious Caesar salad served in a Parmesan nest. Our entree was served hot consisting of halibut over fresh succotash. We will definitely have this again. The service was excellent as our waiter was very friendly and attentive checking on us frequently, replenishing beverages and offering beautiful desserts. The Family chose Hooked for our Mother's Day Lunch. The food was very good. The crab dip was great. We had a large group, everyone found something they liked. Not everyone wanted seafood. Robin was our server. She did a fantastic job. Kept our drinks filled, and all of the food came out at same time. I love that there is plenty of room between the tables. I want to preface this review by saying I do not eat seafood. As a grown adult, I am aware that turf choices are limited in seafood restaurants. My husband, however, is often craving his favorite clam strips. Having ridden by this place many times now and seeing the parking lot consistently packed, we decided to give it a whirl for a late lunch. Upon entry, we liked the light and airy feel, there are no wood-paneled walls draped with fish-nets, no funky odors. It took a few minutes to be greeted, but once we were, all went smoothly as far as service goes. Food- because it was lunch, I ordered a burger for myself, which was described as having pepper jack cheese on it, served with fries. My husband ordered clam strips and calamari. My "Hooked Burger" had to have been the least tasteful burger I've had in a long time. If that was really pepper jack on there, pepper was lost and jack left town. Zero flavor. The beef had no seasoning at all. I firmly believe that ALL food offerings at a specialty restaurant should be crafted with equal intentions. If your goal is to "craft delicious dishes", put the effort into everything. The fries were super great the first few I had, but then several were still cool on the inside. So yea. My husband's calamari, served over a sweet chili sauce, he described as "weird" and " makes no sense ". Thankfully he felt the clam strips were "on point". Again, service and ambiance were great. We overhead another patron raving about her food. Great. Don't come at me with the "don't go to a seafood restaurant if you don't eat seafood" comments. I just mainly wanted to write this review because not everyone CAN eat seafood, those of us who cannot are deserving of good food when we accompany someone who can and does eat seafood. read more

Update- went back this week. What a difference a few plants would make! Service was great and there's plenty of it which is nice. Crab dip was really good, again. But fish tacos were blah- not blackened or grilled as ordered. Fried oysters were very good- fresh and crunchy, but truffle fries were boring. Drinks were good. Still needs a vibe, lighting has a lot of room for improvement. Add some side tables with lamps, turn the overhead lights down, add some sconces. For $500 you could do a lot! read more

She is a real pleasure & does an excellent job! There's literally something for every taste on the menu. This visit, I chose the seafood trio - 6 huge shrimp, 3 scallops, & a crab cake with a side. I The trio is available fried, broiled, or blackened, I chose fried. My boyfriend had the lump crab meat stuffed flounder, with broccoli as his side. Great service. Nice atmosphere. Food was meh. My husband and I both got the trio which is shrimp, scallops and a crab cake grilled. The seafood itself is well cooked and you can tell it's fresh. They go a little crazy with the pepper seasoning. I think they'd do better to leave it more simple -with just some butter and Lighter seasoning. They struggle with their crab cakes. Again, trying to go crazy with the seasoning so it tastes awful. I really wanted to love this place and I can tell a lot of folks DO as they were full with a waiting list. Overall, I couldn't get passed the way too heavy seasoning to fully enjoy it. If we had ordered our food blackened, that would've been okay but we didn't. Adding a ton of pepper and conflicting seasonings doesn't necessarily mean the food will be good. read more

Well, first off my wife does not eat seafood, but she knows I love it. Nice, clean place, chill atmosphere. Hostess was nice. Ordered appetizers for my meal, calamari and fried clam strips. My wife got the Hooked burger. When the food came out, I was confused like Scooby Doo on why the calamari had this "sauce" on it. This sauce is a huge mistake, it tastes like out of date duck sauce, the kind that you find in Chinese restaurants, but worse. No,no, no sauce on calamari guys...WTH. The fried clam strips were awesome, oh and I got a draft beer, frosty and tasty, wife's burger was super bland, no taste no seasoning, I know it's a seafood restaurant, but still cmon. First time visiting for a family birthday dinner and we were all impressed. Great portions that were affordable for seafood. We also had two children and with us and there was a kids menu that included burger, Mac & cheese, chicken tenders, etc served with fries. Staff was very friendly and restaurant was semi full for a Tuesday. Atmosphere was quiet with a mixture of tables and booths. They do have a happy hour until 6 pm each day. They serve complimentary rolls and butter prior to dinner. We had the 8 shrimp with Broccoli and shrimp were cooked perfectly and broccoli was delicious. Not rubbery or overcooked. First time! Love the design of the restaurant, very clean and crisp. We were seated right away and our server did a great job offering suggestions. I had the crabcake sandwich with a side of hush puppies. What I liked about the sandwich was the lemon aïoli that it was served with. It was so good. It had a creaminess and a zesty taste that made sandwich even more flavorful. They served the hush puppies with butter, which is always a plus for us. We also had calamari for an appetizer. It tasted fresh and the portion was very generous. Hubs had the baked stuffed flounder with fries. He described it as very flavorful with a hint of old bay. Went tonight for our first visit. We had the tuna appetizer which was delicious. The main courses were grilled salmon with crap sauce and stuffed flounder with the crab sauce. We devoured our food. The atmosphere doesn't give "seafood and raw bar" which might just be living near the ocean bias. I was really glad to have a seafood restaurant near us again. And I was Excited to try it today with my husband. First, I will say the wait staff was great. The food however (& maybe I'm lil prejudice because I grew up on the beach fishing and crabbing in MD) but the food was not worth the price. My husband said his fish and chips were okay. Mine was just bland and seemed not to have any taste (shrimp and scallops). The scallops were a bit rubbery tasting and I love scallops so it was disappointing. We will not be revisiting for some time (maybe it's the chef idk ‍) but I was really hopeful and looking forward to a good seafood meal but left sorely disappointed We paid over $75 when all was said and done (no alcohol only Pepsi & tea). Family dinner out night, was pleasantly surprised, locally owned by Giambancos family. Owner was on site to greet and talk I love that in a non chain establishment. The service was excellent Alex was our server ask for him. The seafood choices were varied and locally sourced where possible, preparation and presentation were excellent. The interior is bright and spacious. Between us we shared several of the appetizers and the mains we had were the grouper plate, oysters, blackened shrimp salad shrimp with chili sauce stuffed mushrooms All were excellent This is a great addition to the mechanicsville area dining choices and something we have been looking forward to.
