The Captain Cook Athletic Club is located in the basement of this hotel which is located in Downtown Anchorage.

Anchorage, Alaska This workout facility is located at a hotel in downtown Anchorage. It's also open to non- hotel guests for a fee. There is a pool and a jacuzzi in addition they offer a few classes, these are set up co-ed but the actual workout areas that include weights and cardio machines are separated (not co-ed). It may be less crowded if you went at off hours however it's overall size is small and equipment selection is limited. There are some weights but very few options in comparison to the availability offered at other facilities. The pool option is nice because not all gyms offer a pool. There are multiple tvs in the workout area and headphones are supplied. This facility offers a more spa like setting with it's additional amenities just to reference a few they offer robes, sweat pants and a t-shirt to use, towels, toiletries, hair dryers, tea, coffee, water, massages, wifi and a lounge with a large flat screen tv. If your workout mainly includes swimming laps, or consists of basic cadio machines, or if you're interested in steam or dry sauna, tanning, or getting a massage followed by relaxing in a robe while sipping tea in the lounge while watching tv or reading the newspaper this club would offer you that experience. If you're just visiting for a few days you may find this gym acceptable but if you are looking for a larger selection of workout equipment and more classes or if you're a local seeking a larger gym with more activities this club may not be adequate enough to meet your needs. If you are seeking to lift some serious weights and get a full workout this gym most likely would not be the best fit for you (no pun intended) The club is clean with the exception of the wet sauna that has an unpleasant odor. Replacing all the tiles inside may eliminate the odor and in turn make the wet sauna more engaging. Overall the staff is friendly, professional, accommodating and they refer to you by name. I hope this review has been helpful.

    Adventure awaits!

The Captain Cook Athletic Club has become a mainstay of my morning routine. The club is separated into a men's and women's side, the exceptions being the pool and group exercise room. Everyone who works out here is friendly and it has a real community spirit. It's not trendy but has a classic elegance about it that I adore. The staff is friendly and constantly works to ensure a positive experience for members.

Great steam room, nice pool, not a lunk gym, but kind of treat for those staying in the hotel.

Other gyms for this cost or less have saunas, tanning, pools, yoga studios, classes, etc. Not here. The two newest staff members are very unpleasant with one of the girls going as far as chasing you down anytime shes away from the desk when you scan in and practically accusing you of not being a member. On top of that the same girl has a habit of putting things away before anyone is finished, I've seen her do this to the point someone will eventually yell at her. Any time you step away to grab water, go to the bathroom, or even just walk around in between sets she immediately cleans up after you even if it's obvious you're not done. She also seems to think everyone should workout in 100% silence so if the weights ever make any noise or if someone makes even a quiet grunt she'll tell the manager who then calls you to say there's been noise complaints about you (which is funny because whenever I've gone there's either people that are much louder or there's not a single person in the building so I'd love to know where the complaints are from). It's really not worth the price.

For many years we had been loyal Alaska Club members but their are so EXPENSIVE! We're seniors so we checked out the Senior Center. While the Senior Center gym is pretty nice their hours of operation are very limited. So, we thought we'd give the YMCA a shot and we're so glad we did. It cost less than $65/month for unlimited access. We could pay one month at a time bring our grandchildren. They are open from early in the morning to pretty late at night. They always have at least 2 lanes open for lap swimming and their treadmills are solid, industrial models with cable TV screens. They provide 2 clean towels and a large locker with a lock for free and you can also reserve a small locker (you provide your own lock) if you want to leave you exercise shoes or toiletry. It is so unfortunate that we lived in Anchorage for many years and never considered using their facilities. Oh yeah, they are just about to open a brand new addition that sounds like it will be first class. Hint - their app really isn't worth using as they haven't figured out or assigned someone to really make it work or keep it updated.

I was looking for a trainer that would actually listen to my requests and goals, as I have had some not great experiences in the past. I have been working with Jay three times a week. He has not missed a session (one of my issues from other gym/trainer experiences) and he always has an absolute winning, positive attitude. I came in about fifty pounds overweight and terribly out of shape. I am also not a gym person so this has been a big learning curve. Jay has always taken the time to respectfully and patiently answer my many questions. I am always impressed with his vast array of knowledge. And the staff midday, when I train, are just wonderful. Shout out to Sydney, Mia and Christian who are super friendly and helpful. They feel like my own cheerleading team! The gym is quite large and there are plenty of different machines to choose from. The members are all shapes and sizes and walks of life, and I don't ever feel shamed or excluded. I asked the front desk and was told they were closing things for reupholstering, and that someone would check on the timeline and give me a call. No one ever did. I followed up--no response. I left a voicemail to the general manager directly and never heard back. Then today there was water leaking from the ceiling in the pool room by the wall. I noticed when it dripped on me and saw there was already a big puddle on the floor. There were multiple holes/cracks in the ceiling and evident water damage. I told the front desk, one person followed me to have me point it out, then left. Forty-five minutes later nothing had been done no signs, bucket, cleanup, etc despite a bunch of extra staff around for a Nordic spa event. Staff were also talking about the steam room in the locker room being down but the one in the Nordic spa was working. It really feels like all the attention is on the new Nordic spa while the rest of the facility is suffering. Overall, just really poor communication and lack of upkeep.

I recently visited the new Nordic spa at the Alaska Club East. The pools and saunas themselves were…read moreclean and well maintained, and I'm glad Anchorage has another Nordic-style spa option. However, there were several aspects of the experience that made it fall short for me, especially considering the non-member price point. The biggest issue was the changing room setup. I did not realize the spa uses the regular gym locker room rather than having a separate spa-only locker and bathroom area. There was very little privacy for changing, which really took away from the relaxing spa atmosphere. I also had no idea guests are expected to bring their own lock for the lockers. The FAQ mentions bringing sandals, but I never saw anything mentioning needing a lock. At Alyeska Nordic Spa, lockers are already provided and ready to use, so I assumed this would be similar. I wanted to change in the shower or bathroom stalls for more privacy, but both were extremely small and narrow with nowhere to hang a bag or place belongings while changing. There really needs to be a more functional and private setup for the spa. I also think the spa would benefit from a private entrance for spa guests instead of entering through the gym itself, aside from existing gym members. It would immediately make the experience feel more elevated. There also should be a bathroom directly inside the spa area so guests don't have to return through the locker room/gym spaces during their visit. Atmosphere-wise, it feels much simpler than other Nordic spas. The wood fencing around the spa is a nice natural color but doesn't create the immersive feeling of being surrounded by nature as is what a Nordic spa is all about, like how Alyeska does. My other major issue is the pricing. At $95 for 90 minutes for non-members, it feels extremely overpriced for the overall experience offered. For comparison, Alyeska Nordic Spa is around $120 for a full-day luxury experience 10am-9pm with significantly more amenities, a much more seamless setup, and a far more immersive atmosphere. I understand this is a different type of facility, but the pricing should better reflect the size, amenities, and overall experience being provided. Personally I think a non member price of $55 would have been much more reasonable. Overall, it was clean and enjoyable in some ways, but it felt more like an enjoyable outdoor pool/hot tub experience. There are definitely improvements that could make the experience feel more polished, spa like, and more worth the current cost.

This place gets you in and out in well under an hour (hence the 45 in F45). 2) You don't need to worry about adding structure to your workouts. These guys take care of that. 3) There are several class options per day (around 5-6), leaving me with less of a reason to use lack of time as an excuse for not working out. 4) The work outs are full body. 5) The staff is awesome. They're basically your personal trainers and they provide great motivation during your workouts. 6) The prices are reasonable and they offer a few different plans. (Unlimited for a year, 8 classes/month, month to month). The only thing I don't like about F45 is your membership is only valid at the location where you purchase it. You're on a team of sorts and very quickly ind yourself cheering each other on. The trainers are very encouraging and make you feel really comfortable. It's not a huge gym but there's so much equipment and all the exercises are fitting for the space. You don't feel like you're on top of each other. All the exercises can be modified and the flow of the workout is so easy to follow. Aside from the music and the high energy, the trainers really know how to spool you up without it being annoying. It's a great time. As soon as I heal up I'm going back. I've got too many injuries to do it now, but literally the minute I'm cleared to do it again, I will.
