This is the closest franchise to downtown and is smaller in size than most (and busy!). Staff was friendly and the equipment was clean. They are open good hours so you can get your workout in! Wish they had more TVs set to sports channels. All the TVs by the treadmills are on news channels and CNBC. Will be back when traveling in this area. read more

I don't usually write reviews, but when I do, it is warranted. I wrote a review last week to bring attention to the deteriorating facilities. Management did respond with a generic message asking ME to contact the corporate office with my concerns. I did, NO RESPONSE. It gets worse. I show up at the gym today only to find that the hours have been reduced, again! Perhaps you should also reduce what you charge me for my membership. These are not the terms that I signed up for. Bait and switch. WAKE UP PLANET FITNESS!!! A gym that opens at 7 am is way too late, many people work out early in the morning. This place is a joke. I've been a member for years but the conditions and changes have me rethinking my membership. I do not recommend becoming a member here. read more

Overall, I would say this is a solid location. It's well maintained, always clean and lots of machines. The only real downside is that it can get really crowded but I can't really fault them for that, they're in the center of Midtown so what can you do? They could really use more free weights though, it feels like there's very few to go around even when it's slow. I would recommend this location but you should definitely avoid peak hours unless you just want to jump on a treadmill or something, they get packed around 4 - 6PM. read more

Haven't been to the gym since the pandemic started because it's a pandemic. Saw that they started charging me again once I was out commercial fishing. Came back to cancel the membership in person as I was told I had to do by the person I signed up with. They would only refund 3 months though I haven't used the service since March....and they stopped payment then started charging again. The worst part is everyone was rude and combative to me about my desire for a refund except for the lady who said "I'm at the bottom of the chain". The day supervisor was rude the manager was very short and rude and her assistant manager was also abrasive, they also tried to triple team me when I said I thought it wasn't fair that they charge me for a service I didn't use during a pandemic..... can't imagine running a Bussiness like this- this was all over $60. I literally told the manager that I didn't care that much about the money just though that it was unjust! She tried to tell me that we weren't still in a pandemic lol. The gym is fine.. but the upkeep during the winter months, outside the door and the sidewalks, at the Penland Pk location is hazardous and a joke.!!! I fell twice on their sidewalks this winter. Both times the attendance behind the counter acted clueless. This last time, I asked if they were going to attend to the icerink outside the door and she started to blame it on the owner of the building. I asked her if PF normally keeps there own icemelt/ sand and she said yes but they were out!!! BOOM there is your law suit baby!!. I asked if they had a shovel or ice breaker, the attendant said no... WTH planet fitness???. I decided to try this location to get a workout in earlier today. This location isn't exactly the best in terms of the surrounding area and the traffic situation. The gym is located in one of the busiest and most dangerous intersections of town on New Seward and Benson. Accessibility is easy from either road but getting out is the harder part especially when traffic lines build up on Benson making it harder to get a lane going eastbound and only being able to get the turning lane to New Seward. The other exit on New Seward is just as bad since it's next to the traffic light and waiting can take a few minutes with all the cars turning in from Benson or cars traveling at more than 50MPH on New Seward. The gym itself is a lot smaller than what I have seen at the Dimond location. All of the conditioning equipment, cross-training machines, treadmills, and stationary bikes are closely grouped together with the limited space they have. The locker room is also smaller and laid out in rows like the Northway Mall location. The gym was crowded today, but finding an open exercise machine was not an issue except that everyone is gathered close in proximity when exercising. When I say close, I mean that the treadmills are literally placed next to each other, that if someone next to you is profusely sweating, their sweat might get on you while running. (Personal space is everything no matter where you are.) The manager at the front desk was friendly and professional since he had to take a few minutes to add my North Carolina membership to the Anchorage database. I was looking to replace the gym bag I had that was worn and had a few holes in it. I found a great deal on a gym bag with the Planet Fitness logo for only $10.00 at the front counter. Aside from memberships, they also have a variety of items like headphones, locks for locker use, Muscle Milk drinks, t-shirts, hats, and accessories for charging your iPod for the car or on your laptop. Overall, the workout was just fine despite the crowded atmosphere and the close placement of all the machines. I think I will stick to the Dimond location for the comfort and convenience. read more

Omg this location is horrible. I live on the east side but work at the key bank building so this would have been a convenient location for me to go to after work. But after my first time here last week, I'll probably just drive back to the east side planet fitness. For starters, this gym is so small. If you're claustrophobic I definitely wouldn't suggest this location. All the machines are jam packed next to one another. It's like you ain't got any breathing space. They don't have enough machines either and it's not organized very well. The massage chairs are located at a very odd location too. Right by the front door! How are people supposed to relax? I definitely recommend the planet fitness on the east side over this location. You'll feel much more comfortable there! read more

WARNING: RANT TO FOLLOW! . Do not read if you don't want to hear angry vitriolic ranting! Any company that allows you to UPGRADE or sign up online, that doesn't allow you to stop your membership or downgrade online OR over the phone, is a shiesty, shady, piece of crap. I have been pretty financially compromised while having and then thankfully recovering from cancer. I sat down today to try to trim even further from my monthly bills in order to be able to hopefully turn things around financially for my family now that I am WELL. Thank GOD I am well. So, after already having stopped my internet at home and cable for the Hubbs since he isn't here right now, I just stopped my 9 dollar a month Netflix and was attempting to stop Planet Fitness. Although you can do any other business online with them, trying to downgrade or discontinue service they intentionally make very difficult. I explained on the phone that my life was very hectic right now and I didn't want to waste gas money either going to the post office to send a certified letter, or coming down in person to cancel when I knew perfectly well it could be done on the phone. The customer service people just kept stating the policy, and also told me "my doctors could write letters and then my husband or somebody could bring those down and they could "pause" my account." Yeah, because a sick or recovering person has loads of time and patience while sometimes having to call in favors to even have groceries or get to the doctor, to go through a multi-step arduous process to delay an effing gym membership. It's pedantic and frustrating and asseneine and there are hundreds of online reviews saying it. Well, I know it ain't much, but even though I would have come back when I could afford it again, this years-long member will NEVER be back. I am hating on this business SO HARD right now. PS. They will answer this and say "We have in person AND remote options to cancel." Yeah,write and send a (Preferably certified) letter via snail mail, or come in in person. BOTH of these methods are meant to beleaguer rather than expedite this process. So, sick? Too bust with kids? Moved far away? Any other reasons making it difficult for you to come down? Hope you have a stamp and an envelope and time to write a letter (Because so many of us do that these days). Dont EMAIL us, OR call us, because that would be too convenient for you. We REALLY want to make this difficult so you wont be able to find the time and maybe we can squeeze a few more months of billing out of you when you already arent using our services. If we make it difficult, we have shown a certain percentage of you will forget and we can get more of your money for free. I have asked FIVE different customer service reps for a good reason for this policy and all of them give me the robotic response that it is "The policy." I'm like, I KNOW WHAT THE POLICY IS, YOU ROBOT. I asked for a REASON. They don't give me one because the reason is "I work for a shady, greedy company who realized this was a way to get more money from busy or sick people. NEVER sign up for this gym!!! Read the reviews. And this applies at other locations, as well. PS, I went in and cancelled on a freezing cold day, spending gas money I didn't have and polluting the environment for no good reason. I ALSO wrote them a letter and delivered it at the same time. Interesting that the reviews are more than a year old. Anyway, before Planet Fitness moved to their new location on Northern Lights, I had written a review regarding a guy who hangs out at the gym every day for hours. Not working, not working out, just hanging, watching people. He first was hanging out at the front counter at the entrance to the women's locker room where women had to walk right by him, (which gave me the creeps). After my post, he moved to the other side of the counter so someone would have to walk past him to get to the tanning booths and sit next to him in the massage chairs. Now at the new location, the same guy is still hanging out just watching people. When I mentioned that this made me uncomfortable and that I was considering stopping my membership, nothing was done to remove this guy. I gave it a few months hoping things would change, but then yesterday when I pulled up to go work out, there he was, at the table right as you enter, so I didn't even go in. I've heard from other people that this guy has been kicked out of other gyms for just hanging around. I PAY for my membership and to work out in a place I can feel comfortable and this is not it! I will not be going to this location again (and their other locations are inconvenient). read more

Terrible, I was here on business and I needed a place to get my exercise in because the hotel gym was not a gym. I called them and asked what a out of state daily 24 hour pass would be. The manager of the facility said 10 dollars as long as you have your ID to show out of state. I showed up at the gym, the manager left for the night and came in with 10 dollars. They said that it was 20 and have never heard of 10. I turned around and walked right out. Note: when I walked in. The energy in that gym was terrible. I would not recommend going to this gym. There is a gym approx 2 miles away that is much better (Alaska Fitness). I went in and told them about my situation and they were displeased with the customer service to the point where they just gave me a free time pass. I was a member at PF for two years, and I am sorry that I ever spent that much money there. When I work out, I wear something to catch sweat and keep my hair out of my eyes, like most normal people do. Apparently, my bandanna was unacceptable. They had a sign out, briefly, at one time that said something about no bandannas and skullcaps, but it disappeared. When I returned to Alaska from working out of country, I signed back up at PF. No sign in sight. Countless were the times that I checked in, wearing a bandanna, with not one person or sign noting that it was forbidden. I'm talking eye-contact here. Hey, here's my little keychain card, hey, pasty white girl wearing a bandanna, hey, you totally didn't check to see if I'm packing heat! Well, one day, while I was working out, an employee came up to me, interrupting my routine. "Sorry! You can't wear a bandanna at Planet Fitness!" Usually, I am meek and passive and nice, but I was so pissed off that she had the nerve to approach me while on a machine, so I snapped, "Why?" "Oh, tee hee, well, Planet Fitness was started on the East Coast, where there are lots of gangs and stuff!" "This wasn't a problem before." "Yeah, um, well, it's not allowed, sorry! You can like, get a sweatband instead." (What an idiot. She didn't even know that the Bloods AND the Crips are both West Coast gangs.) I was so stunned, I just got up and left. I immediately went home, and e-mailed a (very restrained) letter to the manager, and got a mumbly, nervous voicemail in response. I returned the next day to cancel my membership. I was really appalled by this. If that isn't a discriminatory practice, I don't know what is. Gangs? Seriously? That's right; I totally forgot that there is a wicked Bloods and Crips gangwar going on in midtown Anchorage, Alaska. (On a side-note, if they're so worried about gangs, why'd they open a PF near Mountain View, huh? Totally joking..!) It seems like a very selective practice that is thinly veiled as a PF-wide rule to try to discourage non-white ethnicites from patronizing the gym. It just is so mind-boggling stupid, every person I told the story too could not believe that the gym would forbid such an innocent piece of fabric. As one of them said, "PF is giving power to the SYMBOL it represents! Also, it's stupid." And, after going to a REAL gym, I have learned so much that PF lacked --- a good free weight section, classes, a variety of machines, spacious areas to do mat exercises, friendly staff, and.. get this: Most gyms don't offer free bagels and pizzas, wholly counterproductive to the entire reason why someone would want to be working out in the first place! If you want a cheap place to run on a treadmill for 20 minutes, and feel good about yourself for that, then PF is for you. But honestly, the money that you spend on the membership and the gas to drive there would be better spent on just buying yourself a treadmill to take home. And I'm pretty sure while in the comfort of your own home, you won't get harassed for wearing a $*@&$* bandanna. read more

Was a member over a year ago and moved away. They wouldn't let me out of my contract even thought I was moving in an area where the nearest PF is 200 miles away. So I had to pay an early term. Stupid. Well I am back visiting and a friend has a membership so we went. Well wow how things have changed still a judgement zone. There are many treadmills not working like 6 are you for real! Most equipment is not being maintained or cleaned. They leave cleaning up to you the user why do people pay for a membership. This is crazy! I am happy my new gym in the lower 48 is way better and has working equipment. They had a downed bike they fixed it in 3 days they are amazing. read more

This morning while working out, I had the opportunity to see one of the trainers, Thomas, working with an older couple. You could tell they weren't very experienced yet Thomas was patient and engaging. I had ear phones in and couldn't hear what he was saying, but the looks on their faces told the story. This is a nice little gym, great midtown location, easy to get in and out of, friendly staff and always very clean! The gym is on the smaller side it does not have a ton of equipment or free weights however, it has several pieces of cardio equipment and enough to get by on a simple routine. read more

When she returned she found the man drinking out of her water bottle that she had forgotten on the front counter? Planet Fitness is a no-frills place to do your workout. The basic membership price is right: $15 or less per month. If you're self-motivated and go at your own pace, this is the gym for you. It doesn't have towel service, classes, or a pool like Alaska Club. It also doesn't have the steep monthly price or the sign-up sheets for cardio equipment. As a former AK Club member, it was frustrating to go after work or at lunch and find EVERY cardio machine being used for the next 20+ minutes. It's got normal folk as clientele. There are no kids, there are no weightheads (as at World Gym), and there are no people walking around checking out fellow worker-outers. People come, exercise, and go home. It's not a hang out but it's definately not un-friendly, either. The staff are helpful and cheerful and not in the robotic "have a great workout" kind of way. Tootsie Rolls = plus. It is the average gym for sure. What I like is that they are cheap, have the basic of what you need to workout (plenty of cardio for sure) and they know my name and number when I walk in and check me in before I get to the counter. Also plenty of TVs (though some cardio equipment ear phone jack doesn't work) and free pizza and bagels the beginning of the month (counter intuitive I know). Friendly staff and clean environment. What I dislike is the lunk alarm and the "no judgement zone" quote. I understand their philosophy but not being able to do Olympic weight training or any abnormal exercises gets you criticized and I feel that is a form of judgment as well. Their is not a lot of free weights and space to do weight training because it is predominantly cardio machines. All in all i still get a good sweat on there. read more

At Planet Fitness you get exactly what you pay for (plus a little more!) You won't find any trainers walking around here, or staff that is too eager to help you with anything. You also won't find a sauna, steam room or pool. But what you will find is a cheap, clean and often uncrowded gym with plenty of cardio machines and weights. As long as you avoid going Mon-Thurs right after 5pm, you never have to wait for any equipment. The "Black Card" Membership requires a 12 month commitment, but is a low $20 a month and also has the benefit of free tanning AND unlimited free visitors. If you don't want to sign a contract you pay a higher start up fee, but a lower monthly cost and you don't get the tanning and visitor benefits. read more

Good cardio machines, pretty clean, but waaaaay too crowded if you want to lift weight. Mainly the problem is that they have 6 spots to lift weights, in a huge building, so there are usually about 20 people waiting to get into the spots. I've gone there, and done a 30 minute workout waiting for a spot to open, and then just given up and left numerous times. They have a huge unused circuit/"gym class" area, and a too-large abs area. If you just want to run the machines are good enough to make it worthwhile, and they have a lot of them, so it's never a problem to get one. If you wan to lift weights the limited amount of weights, and lack of freeweights to bench, squat, or deadlift make this place a dud. Even if you go at 8:30-9:30 PM it's difficult to get into one of the few spots to lift weights. read more

I have been a member of this location for almost a year, i have moved from Anchorage now and i thought maybe i should do a little review of this place. In my one year i had a really nice time there, everything was always clean and machines were almost always working well. Its Planet Fitness so its not the best place for people who want to professionally build muscles but for an everyday workout its a really good place with a very low monthly fee. The best thing about his location though was its employees, they were always smiling and they always did their best to make you feel welcomed. read more

Granted PF is cheap but they can be a hassle to deal with as someone talking about the bandana mentioned above. Their quality of management really varies between the three centers in Anchorage. The Benson center is poorly managed by some woman who thinks she is a dictator. It is a gym... not the Pentagon. It is too bad as the other centers are pretty decent. INCONSISTENT BILLING PRACTICES FOR PEOPLE TRAVELING. Similar to another post, I was staying at the Embassy Suite's next door. I came in on a Sunday and asked about a weekly pass. I was told it would cost $10/per 24 hour period. The price seemed reasonable enough so I went back the following morning, paid my $10 and worked out. I continued this cycle, utilizing the gym 2x every 24 hour period. I did this 3 times for a total of six days. Finally on my last 2 days in town, I went in for another $10, 24 hour pass and was told by their Weekend-Lead that the price was now $20? I told him what I had been paying for the previous passes and he said that the other employees that had helped me were incorrect. It's a nice gym, well kept, and the folks that helped me were easy to work with, especially the overnight guy, but when their advertised price for a monthly membership is $10, what sense does it make to pay double that for a 24 hour period? Not to mention the fact that I had already paid a completely different price for the prior days? What they charge for their facility is their business, I have no issues with that. What I take issue with is the practice of having different prices depending on who is working. read more

He essentially called me stupid for trying to cancel my membership via mail rather than coming in in person (I'm no longer in the state). He offered zero alternatives to remedy the current situation. Well, I like this place. So crowded once in a while but it's a part of it and it motivates you to keep moving. Machines and equipments are too many than space. PF is a basic no frills fitness club; you get what you pay for. The staff is friendly but most won't go out of their way to help you. It is extremely difficult to find parking at this location. Beware if you agree to auto deductible payments. When I terminated my membership they continued to deduct the monthly membership fee from my checking account. The manager was not very helpful. I had been a Planet Fitness customer for more than 3 years now ,all works good so far for me, staff,equipment and location.So I convinced my wife to leave her expensive Gym and try Planet Fitness.So in the middle of November , 3 days before my membership expires; I did renew my year membership paying the one time $199 fee and she started hers the same way of pay. Then a couple of weeks later we both received an offer to join for $99 a year . When my wife asked the manager on duty at Benson's about it she said they can not honor that offer because we already have paid! That email was sent to both of us , there is no rules or fine printing that said we can not use it. Planet Fitness if you are not going to honor an offer that you emailed why you have sent that ? We feel that this is a kick in the butt for a loyal customer and really make me think that this will be my last year with you and go somewhere else ! I feel so frustrated! read more

I contacted this location on August 8th asking to transfer my membership, as I had moved out of town. The person at the gym said I needed to come in to transfer locations. I repeated that I no longer live in Anchorage, and have no way of coming in to do this. She said she would have a manager call me the following Monday, and took my name and number. A month later, having never heard from anyone, I happened to be visiting family in Anchorage and took time out of my three day trip to go in and cancel my membership. I was told that since I officially signed up on October 10th last year, and it is not past October 10th, I would have to pay $60 to cancel my membership. I pointed out to the girl at the counter, Jade, that I have been charged 12 payments, the last of which was for services that I physically could not use, and said I did not want to continue paying for services that your gym was not letting me use. Jade told me there is no way to cancel a membership before the "official" date it started, regardless of the fact that the 12th month after I started my membership was this month. I would have to come in to the gym after October 10th to sign the cancellation paperwork. So I asked to go ahead and transfer my membership to the location closer to me, so that I could go to that gym after it had passed the year-mark. She told me that not only can she not do that in the store (after this is what I had originally been told needed to be done), even if I transfer my membership to another location, I would STILL need to come in to that location to cancel. Um, what? You're telling me that if I moved across the country and transfer my membership, I somehow need to make it back to my original gym to cancel a membership? Jade also informed me that if I wanted to transfer to another location, I had to do that online. Which means that the person I spoke to OVER A MONTH AGO lied to me, wasted $20 of my money, and wasted my time. Jade told me the only other option I had was sending a letter by certified mail after October 10th cancelling my membership. So at the very minimum, I have to wait for another billing cycle to go through and pay your business another $20 for literally NOTHING, AND I have to spend $10 sending a piece of paper saying exactly what I said today. I asked to speak with a manager, and was told there was not one there. I asked for Jade to call a manager and she said she would not. I then asked if I could leave a letter signed by me saying to cancel my membership on October 10th for the manager, and she told me she "can't just leave a piece of paper on the desk." I then asked if I could reduce the amount that I am being charged to $10/month since I am physically unable to use this gym, and Jade told me that if I change my membership fee, my year-long contract is re-started. So, I said to Jade, to get this straight, after your management refused to transfer my membership as I had originally requested, refused to contact me back about my request, has charged me for services that I can't use, my ONLY options are to either pay $60 today, OR to pay another monthly fee PLUS either drive back to Anchorage a month from now, or spend money sending a "certified letter" - your business is going to do NOTHING to correct the issue that YOU created? At this point, Jade told me to leave because she was tired of arguing with me. This has been a horrendous customer service experience to say the least, regardless of the waste of money. Your employees have lied to me and misinformed me, either refused to pass along the original request to management or management refused to contact me back, and further, they have been rude to me and wasted my time. I had NO issues while I was using this location, and was more than happy to transfer my membership to another location when I needed to move, but at this point, I would NEVER use your business, nor would I recommend it to anyone I know. read more
