If I could put half a star I would. The food is ok, the Staff are not knowledgeable and have given false information. My son ordered a kids fish and chips and wanted an extra piece of fish. We were argued with and told that he couldn't get one. Then a Manager came by and said no problem. The meals are very small and very expensive. Horrible experiences at this place!! Been waiting for over an hour for a BLT. Comes out untoasted. I ordered cheese on it and bacon well done. Got neither!! I ordered a patty melt a few weeks ago and it came out with a tiny bit of onion barely any cheese and included lettuce and tomatoes!! Since when does a patty melt come with that?? Why all the bad reviews? We had a good dinner here with friendly service and decent prices. The hamburgers we tried were very good. I tried the regular burger and my wife had the black and blue burger. Both were perfectly cooked, not overdone at all, and tasty. All the servers were very nice. We had very little wait time for food or drinks. No complaints at all . The atmosphere is kind of bland. Both inside and out have kind of a marina, lakeside, boating kind of theme, but you really could almost drive right by and not even notice the place. But hey, if you're driving around Grindstone City it's not like you have many options, and where else can you catch your own fish on the lake and have 'em cooked up immediately in a restaurant? Give it a try... if for no other reason because you're right the road from the best ice cream ever at Grindstone General Store. read more

So we had lunch here on a Saturday afternoon just before Labor Day. Surprisingly there weren't a ton of people but overall we had a good experience. The service was good, but nothing stellar. For the small number of people in the restaurant it took quite a while for the chef to prepare our meals. My wife had the fish and chips and was very happy with it. I had the Waldorf chicken sandwich which was incredibly delicious and somewhat creative. The pizza looked yummy, but we didn't try any this visit. Prices were fair and the beer selection was pretty impressive. Overall, I'd definitely go back again especially since there really aren't a whole lot of choices in the area. I don't think if drive in haut to eat here, but it's well worth a visit if you're already in the area. read more

This twice that we have been here and they are out of some food. We went last year 2018 a week after Labor Day. No French fries, no bread, steak, plus a few other things. Should have left but gave them benefit of the doubt. Another left their cocktails and walked out. This year we stopped in on Sunday May 26 2018. We went with friends and again the same scenario no food. Ordered a dinner and got a sandwich and was told it was the dinner I ordered. Won't go bk and neither will our friends. It's a shame as there aren't many restaurants in the area and they could have been crowded every day of the week. Your loss! read more

We walked in to captain Morgan's for a late night beer, from the moment we walked in the door every person in the bar stopped what they were doing to size us up. It was not a very welcoming experience. The bar tenders seemed uninterested in serving us and spent most the time socializing with the locals rather than doing their jobs. I have been coming to this restaurant for approximately 8 years. Each year and with each turn of management, which also seems to happen yearly, the restaurant gets worse and worse. Unfortunately it is literally one of the only restaurants in the area. After going last year I absolutely refused to go back. However someone said management changed yet again and it was a hundred times better than it was before. Hesitantly I returned only to be massively disappointed again. We came in for lunch on a Tuesday, there were literally four other people in the restaurant and two were only drinking at the bar. We waited over 40 minutes for our food. I was just about to walk out and go home and eat instead when the food finally came out. the burger I got I could tell the patty was frozen and was not fresh meat. The sweet potato fries were the softest things I ever seen and were completely drenched and oil, and speaking of oil you cannot breathe in this restaurant because the stench of deep fry is completely overpowering. The food was awful, once again the service was awful, and the wait time is beyond ridiculous.  They were out of french fries. I have never ever been at a restaurant that has been out of fries. I would have complained but the waiter did not speak any English so at that point it wasn't even worth it. I paid the bill and left. Where is the management at this restaurant? I wouldn't even give this place a 1 star review honestly. I ordered a chicken sandwich and my chicken was completely undercooked. I've come here a couple different times this summer and had terrible service, and you can hear the kitchen staff and their profound language if your sitting in the dining area. The first time coming here I had to figure out a new order because it seemed they were out of everything! 3 out of 4 items on the kids menu were out of stock which made it very difficult as well. These bad reviews on here might have just been bad experiences, because I had the best experience here. I arrived late at night while on a bicycle tour and eventually camped not too far from here. I woke up the next morning with a half built restroom not open near me, then a man on a golf cart with a "fish still" logo on it came by. We got to do a little small talk when I asked if I could use a shower. Attached to Captain Morgan's were some cabins so I asked if I would be able to use the shower. If it were not for Danny Cook at Captain Morgan's I would have had to search for a restroom and a shower. So I figured since the man was nice enough to let me use his shower I would try the restaurant out. I went in right as they opened and their food was phenomenal! Accompanied by their drink called the "Black Beard" (rum and root beer), you really cannot go wrong with any of the fish, sandwiches or burgers at this place and the service was awesome. Then ordered the nachos...server came back to let me know they were out of nacho chips. Ok, changed to a salad. Then my friend wanted to play the 3 digit...sorry, we are out of slips. This is my first review of anything on Yelp. I actually downloaded the application just so I could write this one. My sister and I accompanied our 84 year old Dad to Port Austin. Our trip was just for one night so we came knowing we would eat dinner out. We chose this restaurant because of their proximity and varied menu. My sister and I are vegetarian and our Dad isn't. We called to place a carry out order of pot roast dinner, small cheese pizza and a Traverse City Cherry salad. We were told they were out of cherries but offered fresh blueberries and out of pizza. Then the person who answered the phone told me to hold while she checked on pizza. She came back and said they could do pizza but they were really busy and it would be 40 minutes. No problem! We took the dogs to the lake and returned to get our meal an hour later. I entered the restaurant and there were hardly any people in it. I guess their dinner rush is from 4-5 (I called at 4:20). I told the bartender I was picking up my carry out and she went back into the kitchen. After a few minutes she said to me they had a communication problem and the pizza wasn't made. She offered me a discount and another wait of 25 minutes. I told her I would just get the other part of the meal. I was upset because now I wasn't going to have anything to eat while I sat with my family at the campground. I paid her, she gave me a 10% discount. I waited some more, got tired of waiting and went to sit in the car with my Dad...and wait. A very nice young man came out and hand delivered the food. I drove back to the campground and handed my sister her salad and my Dad his pot roast dinner. No salad dressing, utensils, salt or pepper and butter for the mashed potatoes were in the bag. I drove back to the restaurant to get those items and asked for the manager. The woman who I paid ( behind the bar) was the manager. I told her that this was the worst experience I've had with a restaurant and I've managed restaurants before(and waited tables). She was pleasant and asked what she could do for me...I responded, "Competence". While my sister and Dad enjoyed their food, reporting it was really good. I ate my Dad's side dish of coleslaw (it was good) and this mornings leftover donut for "dinner". So if you have over an hour to wait for an incomplete order and don't mind driving back and forth to the restaurant to get items, like salad dressing for the Traverse City "blueberry" salad, silverware and salt/pepper, then you will really like this establishment! We have gone here for years.. But not very happy with this current staff. The service was awful. We met Friends there for dinner and asked for a table for 7, You would have thought I asked for a table for 20. We said we didn't mind waiting and played a few games of pool. When they said a table was ready they put at 2 tables next to each other. We asked if we could push them together and they said no. There was a table for 8 that needed cleaning but they didn't want to sit us there. So we sat down and then after a few minutes pushed the tables together. The hostess walked up, stops at the end of our table, and rolls her eyes at us. All we wanted was to have a dinner with friends with all the kids together. We had to get our own menus, they were out of mac n cheese, hot dogs, walleye and chocolate milk, on a Friday night!! We had to ask for bread, that came with our meal, multiple times.... It was like the entire wait staff was set against us because we moved a couple tables around...it took us 2.5 hours to eat our meal, And we left as soon as we were finished eating. Very disappointing. Very annoying meal with our kids who loved the place in the past. We are up here a lot, and we wont be back. Also the waitresses were wearing borderline offensive Tshirts... Used to be a decent place to eat. We made the MISTAKE of trying it again. Ordered a 8 oz burger medium asking the waitress if it will be pink. She said yes. The burger was no where near 8 oz. and cooked way beyond and about inedible. Also ordered onion rings which were way over cooked. Food is awesome, loved the pizza. They have a shore lunch option that takes the work out of cooking totally. You bring in your catch from either your boat or one of the many charter boats and I think for $6 or $7 they cook it to order with sides. New owner just remodeled the cabins from 1960's to very modern rustic. Great hidden place in the thumb!!! Denny is the new owners name and he also does charters. read more

We tried to give this place another chance. I have been here many times. There have always been issues over the years. Now under new management, we decided to give it another chance. About a month ago, my fiancé and I went in for drinks. We waited 10 minutes to get our order taken at the bar. There were at least 8 waitresses, and less than a dozen people in the place. We finally got our beers and we're ready for another one and waited another 10 minutes to have a different bartender get us our drinks. When we decided to have beer 3, wait and wait, for a totally different bartender. Fast forward to today. 6 of us total, 2 kids. Ordered sodas and sandwiches, I also ordered some buffalo wings for an appetizer. After our order was taken, we waited 15 minutes for our drinks. One couple walked in, sat on the outside patio and after not getting waited on, left. Another local gal was coming in from the outside patio to get drinks from the bar for her table. After 40 minutes, we told our server to cancel our order if it hadn't been started. We hadn't gotten our appetizer yet either. She came back ten minutes later with half of our food. Ten minutes later for the rest of it. This place is just brutal. Food was average at best. If you have a ton of patience, and have 2 hours to kill for average food, knock yourself out. All around bad experience! We had a party of 8 for my daughters 17th birthday on a Wednesday night. Excuse #1 Our waitress let us know it was here first day there (not her fault no one trained her) so the more experienced waitress tried to help. Excuse #2 The water tastes like chlorine so we were told they just had their water purified. The waitress said we could "switch it out for something not on the gun" and then charged us for the four juices that were ordered. Fish dinner was greasy and cold. Macaroni and cheese was soupy. Excuse #3 oh somebody put too much milk in it today. One person in our party never got her food yet it was still on the bill. When the owner came over it was just more excuses. We were offered dessert that the waitress said she makes herself. Took a really long time for her to bring out these mini desserts served in shot glasses on large round plates drizzled with chocolate sauce. I ordered creme brûlée and it was frozen. Dessert was also brought out while our table was still full of dirty dishes and she forgot to bring spoons. The owner comped 3 dinners and the desserts. Definitely not enough for us to consider ever returning to this restaurant. read more

Been going there for years, thought we would try the new owners, NEVER AGAIN. Went on Friday for the fish, thought the owner was a charter captain, should know how to cook fish. The fish, if you could find it, was over battered and over cooked, it had a cracking sound when you TRIED to cut into it. My wife had the shrimp, they were over cooked, they were like a rubber ball and probably would bounce. The staff was terrible, and uninterested in serving their tables. The place recently changed hands but it's still great. Been going there for years. Went for dinner last night and had a really good perch sandwich. Good tartar sauce and fresh toppings. We also had a hangover burger - a great bar burger with a fried egg on top and great seasoned sweet potato fries. Yum! Good selection of cold beer. Chatting with the bartender and the manager was fun and we learned too late about their double shot Bloody Mary. Will have to make a follow up trip for that. The waiter was nice, but when asked, he told us the specials were 1/2 price appetizers. Nothing about the blackened mako with pineapple salsa or the stuffed pepper soup. Could've doubled our tab, but weren't told. A missed opportunity like that in a short season is a mistake if you're in food service. But, his loss I guess. Our experience was great.
