The city may not be defined by Captain Tony's but st minimum this is where all makers of the future of Key West would meet for a beer to discuss their plans. No trip to the island is complete with a stop in this king of dive bars. Tony is able to keep his beer prices low but lightning the entire facility with only a single tea light candle. Several of those beers are on tap. They also have bottles and cans, but what they don't have is any BS. If you are looking for a comfortable spot to grab a pint and run the billiards table with the boys then this is your spot. If the table isn't as sticky as the floor then it ain't Tony's and it's that type of laid back vibe that makes this place great. Day or night a beer at Tony's is always right. read more

We stopped here for a quick drink as it was recommended to us by a family member. We are not Buffett fans but when in rome... While we were here during the day, I bet this place is fun after 5p or so. There was a guitarist playing acoustic and the interior was dark, dingy and divey - my 3 fav D words to describe a bar! I tried their signature drink the Pirates Punch and if you like sweet drinks, this is for you!! As can also get their cup but can have it filled with Beer instead of their sig drink. Worst service ever! Only 1 bartender that was also the bar back. Waited 20 mins at the bar, never got to order a drink. Left.

Love this bar. It's a lot of fun. The music was great and our friends all had a great time. The only thing that was frustrating is that the first bartender I ordered a round from let me use Apple Pay. The second bartender lied and said they have no way of accepting it. Come here for the history and stay for the Amber ale. The bar was once called Sloppy Joe's, but when the rent went up by a dollar, Sloppy Joe's moved across the street, or so the story goes. The Amber ale is reason enough to make this a destination and the service is head and shoulders above what we encountered across the street. Comments that the place is dirty, gross etc., miss the whole point of what this place is about. You will see all kinds of folks filtering through from college kids , wealthy looking couples to ghost tours and local Conchs! This place is old and all about the details . They say it's the oldest building in Key West. Don't miss the Hanging Tree inside the bar . Don't miss the headstone of Reba Sawyer that rests below the hanging tree or Elvira's headstone that's located in the pool room . Before you get too buzzed take a moment to glance at the newspaper articles about Captain Tony that hang in the pool room. Captain Tony's life is legendary ! Notice the barstools that famous people have sat on that hang from the ceiling . Let it soak in that Jimmy Buffet got his start playing in Captain Tony's. Then later listen to Buffet's "Last Mango in Paris" as he sings about Captain T in the first line! Don't forget to step outside the building and notice the large Jewfish that Captain Tony caught and had preserved. It is said that if you throw a quarter into the mouth of the fish, good luck will follow you until you leave the island. It only took me two tries to get it in! If you like the history of the Keys, , this place is a must. Lots of dollar bills hang around bar. But besides that it is dark and dirty. Bathrooms were pretty gross. . Bar very sticky and hardly a crowd anytime we went in. The captain tony punch gives a souvenir glass (plastic) but was hard to swallow. Tasted a little like cleaner rather than a tropical fruity punch. They have bands. read more

This is a must stop if you're in key west for your first time. It has a lot of history with plenty of ghost story's and there is a real skeleton manning the bar 24-7-365. Can you say hole in the wall? Great, then you just described Captain Tony's Saloon in Key West, Florida. But don't let that stop you from coming in if/when you visit. Captain Tony's has a chill vibe with plenty of eclectic style that fits perfectly with the Key West scene. Take it from me who's been here about four times (not sure I got all my check-ins) in the last four years. Two Key West trips and the place hasn't changed. That's totally okay because if it did then you'd miss out on the dollar bills and bras hanging from the ceiling, the signs and news articles along the walls that talk of Captain Tony himself, and the low lighting throughout the inside that fits the place (though probably is needed with just how grungy things are). But again, the grunginess works. And hey, you might just notice some stuff you didn't realize the first time you were there. The pool tables are front (well, side) and center, but you might miss the other little gaming area complete with a foosball table and a skeeball game. If you're lucky, the nicely-sized window will be open right by the pool tables to take a gander out on the street. Why would you want to look, you ask? Well, people will do their best to throw a quarter, backwards, into the statued fish that hangs above the entrance to CTS. It apparently once brought a free pint to those that complete this feat, but alas, no longer. Speaking of pints, Tony has his own amber ale (and souvenir cup) that'll barely run you up the price of one craft beer. It's nothing necessarily special and is a pretty basic, sorta malty, brew, but cool nonetheless. What's also cool (or not so cool) is just how much history is found in these walls. Truman Capote was here? Nice. That's pretty interesting, but I say it's not the coolest because you might be in the middle of a game of billiards when in marches a tour group that'll annoyingly stand around to look at one of these aforementioned historic items. Do yourself a favor and don't be in that tour group. Just come by on your own time and check the place out. Overall, Captain Tony's (or the original Sloppy Joe's as per their sign) is a great place to check out and return to, maybe even as a starting point for each night you're in Key West (like us). It's got just about everything you'd want from a dive bar with a few extra pieces rolled in. So if you find yourself in the Southernmost Key, give it a chance. Some holes-in-walls are definitely worth a visit (or several). read more

Very cool history in this bar. Was the original sloppy Joe's and used to be the Key West city morgue. Good live music playing bartender was interesting to talk to and definitely knew the history of the place. Located off of Duvall Street so kind of off the beaten path very cool place to go into and have a drink. read more

We pop in every visit to Bone Island(Key West) Wife gets the pirate punch and I do Captain Tony's amber beer. Souvenir cups for both that are fun to drink water in after your trip home. Very dark inside. Lots of interesting pics of Capt Tony and Jimmy Buffet on the walls. Tree in the bar runs out thru the roof. Usually has live music, on our visit there was a woman guitarist with a great little bit raspy voice, she was very good. Dollar bills and bras tacked to the rafters and ceilings. From my inspection, a lot of well endowed women left their bras there. Yahoo! Gift shop for t's and other apparel near the door. We visited this place on a haunted walking tour. I'm not sure it's haunted, but they do enough to trick you into thinking it is. There's a gravestone in the floor in one room, an actual human skeleton behind the bar, and a former hanging tree in the center of the main room. It's a dive bar. And as such, certain levels of gurv are expected. Nice bartenders. Great merchandise area. Bathrooms are tiny, narrow, and crowded. It's fun to sit and people watch. The musician was a treat, especially when he played Gordon Lightfoot's The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald and all the mid-westerners around the bar let out a mighty roar. read more

Yes it's usually crowded, yes it's dark, yes there's a tree growing inside the bar, yes it can be loud, and yea it used to be the city morgue, but it is a must when you visit key west. So much history in this one small bar. The service has always been top notch and the people watching is great. A good mix of locals and tourists. Ok while in Key West and heading back to the ship we passed this place. We were drawn in by the musician playing his guitar and singing up a storm as they say. Loved it so much we even took a seat at the bar. My husband's stool was painted with Clint Eastwood's name don't know if he came here or if it was just wishful thinking. Anyway about this establishment it was home to the first Sloppy Joe's where we just came from. So this place you can imagine is pretty old and it has seen it all. Hanging from every square inch is dollar Bill's stapled on tight. As well as a collection of ladies bras in all colors shapes and sizes. Many of them autographed I assume from the previous owner before leaving it here at Captain Tony's. Great stop for a drink and some music. read more

I hate to give this review but I have to. I have been coming to Capt. Tony's for several years. For the last 5 years the bartenders have been absolute jerks. They are lazy, rude and arrogant.
