We had to visit the Bills Backers bar while in Key West! There wasn't much Bills about it on a regular summer day aside from a few things on the side of one of the walls. It's an outdoor bar. It is a dive bar, very relaxed. We paid $6.25 for a bottle of blue and a coke. I bet during football season it gets crazy!!! read more

Rude bartender. No atmosphere. With so many great bars in key west, definitely spend your money anywhere else! outdoor bartender came flying out into the parking lot before we even came in and accused us of coming in the wrong way and almost causing two accidents... she then disappeared for 10 minutes and came back out, refused to serve us and threw us out. There is no signage from the direction we came that says anything about a one way. never ever going back to that trash bar, the time we did spend there we were standing in a puddle of sewage being accused of things we never did.. the bartender was completely out of line!!! Awesome Keys dive bar. If you're into dive bars, put this one on your list. It's off the beaten path and inhabited by locals so you avoid all the cruise ship tourists and over-drunk 20-somethings over on Duval. If you're looking for a fancy martini or a take-home souvenir mug, this is not the place for you. They have an indoor bar with a pool table, an outdoor bar with corn-hole out back, as well as a package/drive-thru store. Parking is in an on-site lot as well as along nearby streets and usually isn't too bad. Prices are extremely reasonable especially considering you're in the Keys. Definitely worth checking out if you want to go where the locals go! read more

Found this place on our quest to go to places never before visited in this year's Key west trip. This was clearly a locals hangout and was fun. We struck up a conversation with another patron right away, always a good sign of a good bar, in my opinion. They had craft beers which made the husband happy and mixed drinks which made me happy. This is a great stop for just a drink. No menus, no fancy drinks, just a quiet place to grab something quick off of Duval. We did get the impression we were sitting in a local's seat by how uncomfortably close she got to me at the bar when there were plenty of other empty seats, and only 6 people total in the entire bar. So I'm giving this pace 4 stars based solely on it's dive bar status and the fact that it is nowhere near the craziness of Duval Street. It is way off the beaten path and seems to be a place where locals go. We ended up there late night while walking back to our hotel which was on the same street. The minute we walked in we were greeted by a regular who immediately moved down a chair so my wife and I could sit together up at the bar. We then struck up a conversation for a long while, he bought us a round and left. Meanwhile, there was a young lady at the bar with her dog sitting next to her in a bar stool who was nice and eventually a couple of the bartenders we recognized from a bar downtown wandered in. It's fairly big, it has a pool table and it's attached to a package liquor store. Great neighborhood bar and a great place to escape the hoards of twenty-something year old drunken bro's down on Duval. About the only downside for us is that they allow smoking, which I'm sure is a positive for a lot of people so I guess it's a wash. It wasn't bad when we were there though since the bar was fairly empty. The bottom line: If you're into neighborhood dive bars and want to escape the touristy madness this is a great place to come hide out. read more

I found Don's Place while researching for our trip to Key West. I needed a bar within a few blocks of our cottage and Don's fit the bill perfectly. On their website, Don's called themselves a favorite local dive. As I am the Dive Bar Aficionado, this remained to be seen. We directed our cab to take us straight from the airport to Don's to start our vacation properly. It could've gone horribly wrong and I would have been forced to find an alternative spot to begin and end our days. Thankfully for me, Don's was everything I hoped and more. Don's is definitely a dive and is filled with locals sharing their stories of the day over cheap as hell, cold ass beer and mixed drinks that'll grow hair on your chest. The bartender, Boomer, quickly became one of my favorite people on the island as he patiently answered every question I could throw his way and met my complaint of being hungry with a manila folder stuffed full of delivery options. We ended our day back at Don's, this time at the outdoor Tiki Bar. It was quiet enough for us to reflect on our evening but still lively enough to keep us entertained. On our way back to our room, we stopped in at the liquor store (yep, also part of the Don's megadive complex) to stock up on beer and hangover cures. There are countless options when it comes to bars in Key West. Don's Place is a slice of home and a welcome respite to the throngs of tourists on Duval. read more

A good dive bar in a city full of fake coconut and palm decor playing Jimmy Buffett music. Bartender only makes bloody Mary's until noon (hand made it takes a long time) and if you just guzzle them down he will shut you off on the bloodys as well. Honestly, I have to respect that. Dogs sit on laps, bartender has a mooching dog of his own behind the bar. Prices are probably the best on the island, the people are cool.
