This is my favorite restaurant in the whole world. If i had to recommend a restaurant that truly had it all, It would be this Captains Cove. From the impeccable menu to the kind and welcoming staff, it is just a gem in the city of Cancun; I say hidden, because when you see it along the busy streets of downtown Cancun, you wouldn't guess that in back of the restaurant is an entire open patio with a view of the pretty lagoon! Every night at around 7pm you can watch the sun set directly over the water while being seated directly above the water on their wooden deck. It's such an intimate and wonderful place and being there with someone you love makes it feel even more special. We were staying at the Royal Sands and this is one of the restaurants that were included. It was off property and a free shuttle took us there. It didnt have Ac so we sat outside and there was a lovely breeze. We found plenty of good things to eat. We were a group of 5 ... we got all courses and shared. But by the time our entree got there we were pretty full. I dont know if they have dessert but we were too full. The complementary bread was very good. Loved setting outside!!! Perfect place for sunset though it was too cloud that night. People were throwing food in the water ... i assumed feeding the fish. Nope they have 2 huge ... gaters or crocs. I really enjoyed watching them. We were told the shuttle came every hour ... nope every 2 hours and we just missed it. So we had to take a taxi. It was 20 dollars plus tip... didnt love taking a taxi at night in mexico. read more

Fantastic view and people! We found out that this is part of our all inclusive from our hotel and we immediately booked it through Open Table. We visited twice and I do recommend going before sunset. The place have outdoor and indoor seating. The place was so nice and cozy. The staff were attentive and easy to approach. Menu was pretty good they have it all explained even without picture. To be honest just the appetizer alone filled us up already. The food was really good! You have to pay extra for some of the menu and specials they have. I recommend clam chowder for the soup, and for appetizer the ribs, coconut shrimp was really good. Overall experience was really good! read more

Our dinner was fantastic!!!! Where can I start? ... first of all, Jesus our waiter was very amicable and attentive to our needs and wants. We where seated promptly. We didn't like the table where we originally assigned to and surprisedly there wasn't any fuzz in changing our table. Our waiter greeted us right away and let us know the carpaccio was one house fav. We took both fish and beef just to compare difference. The carpaccio's had the tastiest juiciest taste yummy!!! We order the fish carpaccio witch to our surprises it wasn't fishy and the beef carpaccio was fresh (bright red) perfect cut. As for the main course we had tomahawk, Sur n Turf, and skirt steak. The steak was delicious!! Thought Tomahawk was a bit expensive for the amount of actual meat. Yet, we understand sometimes it part of having the delicious bone a lot of fatty will be there. Regardless of that the meat was so soft it melted in ur mouth like butter. Will definitely go again. The service was quite fast considering so many families where present. Cancun has some great seafood restaurants THIS ISN'T ONE OF THEM! We went to Captains Cove 3 years ago and had a great experience, so it was easy to decide to try it again while we were in Cancun in mid September. This visit started off well enough. It was very noticeable that there were many waiters standing around talking even though the restaurant was pretty busy. I asked our waiter about the Catch of the Day" and I was told there wasn't one. Wait, this is a seafood restaurant in a very busy part of Cancun, catch of the day is on the menu- but there isn't one? We tried the raw oysters- they were literally the size of a quarter and had zero taste. I ordered a white fish - listed as mildly spicy on the menu, I asked our waiter if it was really mild and he affirmed that it was "very mild" spice. When the fish arrived it was much too spicy to eat, and I have a high tolerance for spice. I told our waiter about the spice level and he didn't seem to care that my dish was not eatable. No offer to fix it, or refund us. The other 3 in our party had what could only be likened to TV dinner seafood. In spite of the many waiters, service was very slow and it was difficult to get anyone's attention. Likely the very worst seafood restaurant ever. read more

I came here with a friend directly from the airport after traveling in Cuba. We were completely exhausted and was just looking for food to eat. This place showed up on our feed, so we decided to give it a try. We both ordered fettuccine pasta (I got the shrimp and my friend got the chicken). Both had plenty of food on it, but the sauce was a little bland for my personal liking. I added a bit more salt and pepper to my pasta, which was enough to make the meal satisfying for me. The best part about our experience was the ambiance! This place was overlooking the ocean. It was so tranquil and just beautiful. I could only imagine how gorgeous it would be to dine here during the sunset. Also, their complimentary bread is FIRE! It is so delicious, I could've easily filled up on that. read more

We started with calamari which were pretty standard, mussels were amazing and shrimp cocktail which was also good. We finished with the coffee flambé where German put on a fire show. My daughter also loved the crocodile Pedro who hung out right off the doc where we were sitting. This was part of our AI package at our resort but felt far superior to All-Inclusive resort food. Food was good, but there seems to be a bit of "hey this is a fancy, difficult restaurant to get into, but sure we'll take you right away if you don't have a reservation. Oh, and what hotel are you staying at?" I have eaten here twice on different years and I would again. The service is excellent, the seafood is fresh, and the other dishes are solid. However my son and I split the Seafood Surprise, and while we enjoyed nearly every bite, the real surprise was when the check came. Everyone else's dishes were in the $12-15 range. Our special?? $72!! Come on, where did you fly this stuff in from Canada?! The ocean is 10 feet away! It felt like a rip off - and while I take blame for not asking how much the special was, it feels like a reach to charge that amount of money for a meal made for two. The food is good and you can't beat the view! Definitely worth checking out if you're in the area. We came here last week and overall it was a good meal. The Caesar salad was perfect and I enjoyed the coconut shrimp as my entree. For appetizers, we got the calamari and shrimp and pork dumplings. We made reservations didn't need them the place was empty. We wanted a nice relaxing sit down dinner. Instead we were distracted by screaming kids a few tables down from us and the next door restaurant was so loud and distracting. We had a hard time concentrating and having a conversation. The next door restaurant doesn't have a wall but a curtain so you can hear everything and they use speakers and a microphone so you hear the loud music and the dj as if you were there also people kept coming in and out. For the amount of money you pay for dinner we were disappointed. We wanted a quiet intimate dinner instead left with a headache. Not sure if it is loud every day or we came at the wrong time. The security at Captain's Cove DID NOT let us on the shuttle back to Royal Islander because the security said we did not eat there. We had to walk back to the Royal Islander with one of our guests' who had back surgery 6 weeks ago. We were so upset and the management of the ROYAL SANDS said that there was not any room on the shuttle except people who were on the shuttle said there was. Pancho (the crocodile) is obviously a highlight of the evening, but the service and personalization of the experience are what makes it memorable. And pray that no one orders the 30 minute birthday mariachi band while you're there (why someone would subject a loved one to 30 min of this is beyond me, yet I witnessed it). Maybe I'm being too harsh, but it was like the outback steakhouse of seafood. Everything on the menu was stuffed with something else. A veritable seafood turducken if you will. Been here multiple times and its a sure hit or miss. The last two have been pretty decent. Located on the south part of the Cancun strip facing the lagoon, La cueva as they call it, has been a staple for years. They also acquired the restaurant next door and now its even bigger. The food is not bad at all, its just missing that umphhh or wow factor. Ordered the risotto and it was bland no salt or any other flavor besides the cheese. Also ordered the shrimp trio and even when the shrimps are "UGE" aka Huge only the coconut flavored one was actually great. Over all it was just the same food dressed differently. My favorite meal during my stay in Cancun! I came here for dinner during the sunset. It's a perfect romantic setting. Also was hoping we'd see a crocodile, but no luck :( I got the grouper fillet with the chili sauce and mashed potatoes. My bf got the surf and turf. We also got the coconut shrimp. A simple beer and sangria for drinks. Grouper fillet was superb and so flavorful. I recommend sautéed. It was not rubbery as that is what I usually fear with getting a fish plate. The mashed potatoes and veggies paired well. Surf and Turf was also delicious. Steak was tender and not too chewy but lacked some flavors. The lobster on the other hand was amazing. Coconut shrimp was a bit of a let down, but I think my palette just doesn't enjoy this combo of sweet and savory. Overall, I would recommend this place. Definitely a great date night location and experience of fine dining. Expect to pay big bucks! read more

The view is, of course, the prime reason for this locations success. Now the reason for the 3 stars. The food is completely average. We had the Cesar salad, which looked amazing. But, the recipe may not have been followed to the letter and in the end was way over dressed. We had the seafood soup, which was bland. The waiter brought us some habanero sauce that helped a lot. But that shouldn't have been needed in the first place We had the fresh grouper. We love grouper. But here the preparation was poorly executed. Asked for it broiled and it came out way over cooked. The vegetables were cooked in butter over done as well. Personally, a little olive oil and seasoning salt is my preference Come for the cocktails. Stay for the view. We liked homemade bread and captain's shrimp though, actually the bread was the best thing of the night. Service was pretty quick though and the staff was very kind. I will dream about going back to Captain's Cove and hope to get Pablo and Hector again as my servers. They are just wonderful and so gracious. The view and atmosphere is just relaxing and I love that pancho the croc kept swimming by and saying hello. Please don't throw any food over the rail as it is illegal to feed the crocs. I suspect he may have helped himself to the bird in my pics I took before dinner because I did see some feathers floating around upon leaving! We had the catch of the day snapper. I would recommend getting it blackened. Pablo also recommended the drink of the day which had some mezcal and carmalized pineapple. It was absolutely delicious. They brought a flakey cheese garlic bread to the table. It is romantic and you can certainly enjoy your dinner here. Make sure to get yourself some of the fire coffee too. You need to make a reservation if you're going that route otherwise it seemed it was open. We were seated on the outdoor patio and boy were we surprised to see there two crocodile buddies below us! Pancho & Willie! The Mac and cheese dish is a must. *Tip on the steak order up on how you usually get it cooked. My medium rare was basically rare. This place is cool! Our server Saul was great. I went with most of my family so it was a pretty big group. The restaurant looks really nice inside and we had the perfect view of the sun going down. The food was pretty good. I ordered the caprese chicken breast and I cleaned my plate. My wife got the Cobb salad and left nothing for me to taste (we always try everything we order). For dessert I ordered the chocolate cake and she ordered the brownie. Amazing! The presentation was beautiful too. After we ate my family walked around looking for the alligator that is said to hangout there but we didn't see it. They've seen it before but this was my first time in Cancun so I guess I'll have to come back and eat some more delicious food to hopefully see this famous alligator! read more

I have been coming to this restaurant for 20 years as a member of Royal Sands. This last visit was very disappointing. We went on lobster night which we always looked forward to. This night, not only did our meal take over an hour, it was over cooked, presented with under cooked veggies and was extremely overpriced. An 8 ounce lobster tail for $80!! I'm assuming that since Covid and also the fact that resorts send their 'all-inclusive' guests there, this restaurant has had to raise prices and the quality has declined. We never purchase the all inclusive option for the very reason that we want to enjoy fine dining without limits. This restaurant is now crossed off our list. Too bad.. read more

An affordable place to eat and drink for the whole family that's easy to access and order from, Captain's Cove is a tourist's dream. I was looking for a place to eat while I was enjoying my final night in Cancun as the rest of my party had already headed home for the week. So for my final night I came back to where it all began at Captain's Cove across the street from my hotel the Royal Caribbean in the main hotel zone. Why did I come back? The service and location were great the first time around and the food was really solid and affordable. The first time I came with a party of five and for dinner I decided to get the seafood risotto which was topped with shrimp, pieces of crab and scallops on a bed of risotto for good measure. The dish it tasted rich and flavorful. For the first time we also started with ceviche which was served with tortilla chips. The dish was okay but didn't quite satisfy our taste buds as it wasn't as sharable as we had hoped. Also to start our meal, we were served the complimentary bread topped with fine herbs, honey cheese butter and garlic. To drink I got the special sangria of the day and it was totally boozy, which was perfect for the start of my vacation! The real highlights of the first night were the desserts which we got the chocolate cake and the tiramisu. Both were moist and tasty and I wanted more! Since I loved the seaside atmosphere so much the first night while I was in Cancun, I decided to come back to Captains Cove on my own and with no reservation it was still super easy to get a table. The second time I came I went with the summer mojito which was much smaller this time around just three days later. (One of my dining mates got it the first time we came and it was huge, no so much this time around!) For a starter, this time I decided to try the clam chowder because I always compare and contrast the best chowders around the globe. I thought it tasted really solid filled with lots of shrimp which was an unexpected treat. It was served in a bread bowl which unfortunately was too stale to eat with the chowder, which made me really sad. (Because I love my carbs!) Then for dinner, I got the grouper stuffed with seafood covered in this orange gravy served with a bed of mashed potatoes and vegetables. Paired with the complimentary bread it was the perfect meal to cap off my vacation in Cancun. I'd totally come back to Captain's Cove for a meal, if I'm vacationing in this area of Cancun. It's the perfect place where if you're staying in a nearby hotel you can just bill it to your room. When I dined solo my meal came out to $35.95 US dollars for a cocktail, soup and main course and you can't get that kind of deal back home in the states. The food was served warm and tasted delicious and the service was very solid, as they spoke English and Spanish, with the ambiance of the dining room looking over the lagoon was a real nice treat. And sometimes you can see an alligator swimming in it which piqued everyone's interest, so you never know what you're gonna get when you dine at Captain's Cove! read more
