Love the goat cheese salad! Hate the fact they change the prices as they please. Also, loud and obnoxious bass boosted music (so loud the tables were shaking) coming from the back room that made me feel like I was in a fraternity basement, not a nice expensive restaurant. Prices are absurd for how small the portions are. Ordered the goat cheese salad (priced $15 on the menu) with grilled chicken on top (chicken not priced on menu). Received the bill, my extremely small appetizer sized salad with half a piece of grilled chicken came out to $28!!!!! I had the same exact salad to go a week before and it was only $19. When asked why the price difference, the manager did not have an answer and gave us $7 cash back? Honestly the weirdest and poorest overall dining experience I've ever had. Came her for an early dinner and had an ok meal. The waitress was very friendly. I had ordered a steak and it was very undercooked. I asked for Med Rare but it was very rare. Be aware going when the sun it setting the sun was glaring into the Restaurant and it was blinding. They need better way to block the sun. It was also very loud. The been around forever Captain's Inn in Forked River, NJ has all the comfort of a decade old pair of Levi's and that is certainly welcome after enduring the current crop of professionally curated (eg boring) establishments that seem to have been designed by the least interesting man in the world. If I never see another supersized lighting filament through clear glass, I'll die a happy man. Sit down and enjoy a basket of supermarket bread sticks and oyster crackers still wrapped in cellophane. I shouldn't like it but I do. Then follow that up with a fantastic cup of she crab soup while the muffled sounds of bar band Allman Brothers wafts in from their palm-strewn Tiki Bar across the street... more points for atmosphere. Finally, enjoy some stuffed salmon with crab and shrimp that was fantastic. The only downer was the layout of this obviously added onto structure. Just getting to the restroom which was 15 feet from our table, required a half-marathon around pianos and oddly placed tables. I suspect that's what institutional character is all about. Enjoyed a nice lunch here. Bartender was friendly & the menu has a lot of interesting choices. Interior-wise - spacious & the woodwork in the bar is very old & historic. Complimentary basket of breadsticks & crackers with homemade cheese-butter spread was served - tasty! We shared a coconut shrimp app - shrimp were excellent & large! For lunch my husband enjoyed the turkey club & I had the fried clam dinner. Clams were good although I prefer clams that are thicker & not on the thin side which is how these were served. I had salmon with chili sauce, beautiful vegetables, and a baked potato. My husband had the tuna platter which he raved about and it was very plentiful. Our friends each ordered a different entree and everyone was very happy with their choices. Our waitress Faith was so friendly and made our afternoon so enjoyable. You can't go wrong with this restaurant, the food was great, the service was excellent, and the ambiance was so comfortable. All of this and the bill did not break the bank. We just had our daughters wedding at the Captains Inn. The place was great, the food was great and the staff went above and beyond to make it great. My daughters words were I wouldn't have changed a thing and the staff made me feel so special on her day. Leading the staff was Debbie who was very hands on, she directed the service in their tent located accrross street from restaurant, she also supplied my daughter with a bottle of champaign to go and a gift card to return in future for a dinner on her and her husband!!!! we also had rehearsal dinner the night before at the Captains in and Debbie ran the rehearsal so we would know what to do. Classic shore dining at Captains inn. Two of the three beers our table were served were flat but the waitress corrected it. I don't eat much seafood, so I had the chicken francese , which was ok. Others had prime rib and seafood, and I think the prime rib was the stand out meal at the table! Next time that's what I'm going for. Came here for my mom's birthday dinner. First time here. They have been here a few times. It is a nice place it does fill up quick for dinner. The decor was a nautical theme very down the shore feel and vibe. The start u off with Comp bread which is very crispy and warm. Also they give u a delicious cheese spread for the bread and crackers. Nice touch. Big menu all looked delicious. We started off with clams and chili seared tuna. chilli seared tuna with salad-was one of the best things I ate there. Nice and light tuna seared perfect served with a creamy wasabi sauce which was a great compliment to the tuna. Also the salad that came with it was also great. Sesame orange vinegarette was tasty. Clams- not much of a clam eater rack of lamb- nicely cooked a little more well then I liked but delicious Veal osobucco over risotto- second favorite dish I tasted. Veal was tender and risotto was delicious more on the thicker side I like it that way Prime rib- thick cut lot of meat tender and tasty Fried seafood platter-alot of fried food would be a better appetizer for the table. So let me tell you about my experience today September 24,2023. My community celebrated its anniversary with 400 people. We did a breakfast buffet which was suggested by Debbie. Not only was our trays of food delivered hot and fresh, it was so plentiful. We had not one complaint. Keri the young lady who was assisted by two gentlemen that delivered our food was just to drop it off but instead stayed to make sure we had everything we needed as well as professionally setting it up for us which she didn't need to do. I cannot recommend captains inn enough. This is the second time we used them and they pride themselves on what they do. Thank you so much and we look forward to using them again. read more

We got here around 1245pm & it's now almost 2 and didn't get any food. Ended up having to take it to go in order to get my son for school Inside is a standard shore boat theme. Servers were very nice and apologetic stating there was a large party in the back and sorry it was taken so long. Also I had the honey fried chicken. It was listen under sandwiches and it wasn't a sandwich at all. It was two small pieces of chicken Over all experience wasn't good at all. Cassidy our server was very pleasant and took care of all our needs. Our party of 4 ordered 3 crab over pasta dinners and 1 prime rib. The portions were huge, tasty and the crab was sweet and tender. The prime rib was cooked to perfection, medium rare and seasoned perfectly. We sat in the rear dining area which was quiet and easy to have a conversation. The sea decor is what we expected, not overdone and nice background music. We all had deserts that were also very good, fresh and tasty. We will go back. Been going here for years, inside and Tiki bar and always have great seafood and drinks. This past weekend we decided to go for lunch and drinks and went with the fried chicken and it was AWESOME! Honey dipped chix, honey dipped corn muffin was the best one I ever had plus some cranberry sauce! Great choice~! This is the kind of place you might want to visit after Labor Day as it is always crowded in the summer. Four of us had dinner outdoors right on the Forked River in late September. The view from our table was fabulous overlooking the homes on the other side of the river and boats going and coming from Barnegat Bay. We were sitting on the outdoor deck and they have a different menu (sandwiches and bar food) than the regular restaurant. We were able to order the "specials" from the regular restaurant, which we did. I ordered the stuffed shrimp. It was filled with crabmeat served with a baked potato and broccoli. The shrimp were huge and delicious, as were the veggies. You can't beat this place for the view and the food was damn good too. read more

As always while many restaurants come and go, the Captain ploughs on. We visited this evening without reservations. As we parked, we saw a full lot. A sure sigh of good things to come. We were warmly greeted and seated in a quiet corner in the bar area. The main dining room was full. Lily our server showed up quickly and after a pleasant greeting took our drink order and left us with the menu and wine list. We tried the PEI mussels as an appetizer. Honestly I could have used them as my entree. The large serving was prepared as expected My date and I shared. Lily paced the serving of our entrees. My date had the seafood combo which she barely put a dent in. The seafood was very fresh and more than ample in size. I had the filet mignon and shrimp combo. Off the hook delicious. The meat portion was liberal and done just as requested. Likewise the shrimps were large and very fresh. I had a baked potato as a side- not impressive. Overall the Captain continues to deliver good quality food in a comfortable environment. The place could use some upgrades but I would rather continue to enjoy the constantly good food. The menu has been simplified and changes weekly. Prices have definitely gone up and portion sizes have leveled off. We will be back for our quarterly visit and are glad to recommend this gem. read more
