This was our first time eating at Hooks Bar & Grill. It was in walking distance to our Motel which made dinner very easy. We ordered the crab cake sliders , the lobster roll , and the shrimp cocktail . I also got a Heineken 0.0. Overall the meal was really good. We loved the bar atmosphere and being able to watch baseball while we ate. I enjoyed that there were also arcade games and things to do. My only reason for giving it 4 stars and not 5 was because of the lobster roll. The lobster meat itself was a little tough and the roll was a little soggy and not toasted up like we hoped for. But it was still okay. The sliders were delicious! And the shrimp were also pretty tasty. Service was phenomenal and we were seated right away. I am incredibly disappointed with the way my family was treated tonight. Before we were even allowed into the restaurant, the security guard stopped us and claimed that both of my aunts were drunk. He refused to let them in and spoke to them in an extremely rude and unprofessional manner. To make matters even worse, the security guard called my family "assholes." I have never witnessed such disrespect from someone. His behavior was completely unacceptable and unnecessary. Thankfully, the restaurant staff recognized how inappropriate the situation was and apologized to our family on his behalf, which we appreciated. We were also assured the security guard was did not work for this restaurant, rather he is a part of another company. However, the damage had already been done. Throughout our entire meal, multiple staff members continued looking over at our table, making us feel incredibly uncomfortable and unwelcome. Instead of enjoying our dinner, we felt like we were being watched the entire time. No customer should be treated this way. We came expecting a nice family dinner and instead left feeling embarrassed, disrespected, and uncomfortable. While I appreciate the apology from the restaurant, it doesn't excuse the behavior of the security guard or the overall experience. Management needs to seriously address how guests are treated because no one deserves to be spoken to or judged that way. I also want to note that our waiter was awesome and accommodating as well. Beware, don't come here if you're from out of state! Their printed book of ID examples didn't PERFECTLY match the color of our REAL Ohio IDs, so we couldn't be served alcohol. You're better off leaving because the lady will get snotty with you for being asking further questions about it. Left because of how we were treated, not because we couldn't be served. Edit: in response to the business owner, the reasoning she gave us was the color of the ID. If it were because of the DOB and she had expressed that, we would've gone to the car for our passports. The owners response to a previous review did not accurately depict the situation as DOB was never expressed as an issue when reviewing an out of state ID. The server told us the ID did not match the color of their likely dated book of state IDs. The whole second form of ID thing is also bs, most people don't regularly carry a social, passport, or birth cirtificate when going out for a drink...He's lying to save face. The place was adorable. Bright, sunny, clean. I loved all of the games, especially the table games. The waitress was very sweet. The food was amazing and delicious however I have a few comments which is why I did not give it 5 stars. We were a table of 4. We ordered 2 soups and one order of wings, then 4 meals. All of our meals were served and we asked where our soups and apps were and she said: "Oh, I'm going to bring that out right now". We were quite upset and mentioned it but she didn't seem to do anything about it. My meal - which was the most expensive - the Lobster Roll was not only a tiny portion with a small amount of fries but it was completely cold! Everything else was piping hot. I did dump the lobster into my soup and enjoyed it thoroughly. The clam strip platter was very good! Very good food for a bar. I went a few times during our stay, and enjoyed the live music one night. The service was usually very slow, but still friendly and knowledgeable. We love Hooks and being an Ortley Beach full timer walking distance makes it even better. We never had anything that was not good and the people there are great too ! I will say we feel bad that the "old Hooks" will be gone soon....I hope they keep the ship bar and the wood flooring for the new place. read more

Hooks was great! It's a dive bar and restaurant with some charm. They call it coastal casual :) They have pool tables and other games as well as outdoor seating. We came here one evening around 6 for dinner. They were semi busy but not overly so. There was a sign at the front saying to seat yourself. About 10-15 mins later someone actually came to see if we had been helped yet, we hadn't been. She got us waters and a beer for my bf and took our orders. My water was really gross and tasted much different than my bfs. About 20 mins after our order was placed she came by and said, 'I just checked and your order will be right out!' and walked away quickly so I couldn't even get a new water. Another 15 mins went by and she walked past just giving a thumbs up and walked away quickly. At this point we were very hungry, had been waiting in the restaurant for about an hour and still had no food. We asked to cancel the order, pay for the beer, and leave. The server gave us such an attitude saying, 'Well didn't anyone tell you food is a 45 min wait?' Wait time was a little long but only because there was only one waitress working (she did a great job!). My friend got the fish and chips and she told me the batter was mushy and not fried thoroughly and that the fish could use some more seasoning as it was quite bland. We've been here twice once for brunch and once for dinner. We really enjoyed brunch and would definitely return for that, but were unimpressed with dinner. The shrimp tacos only had two tiny shrimps on each tacos - very skimpy and disappointing. Food was typical bar food if that's what you're looking for, nothing special. Service was slow. We had a larger group but everyone had finished eating before the last two people in our group were served their dinner. Great little hole in the wall type spot right off the boardwalk in Seaside. The drinks are cheap and they have a lot of cool games to play. Pop a shot, skeeball, ping pong, beer pong, pool, air hockey, foosball, buck hunter and life size pac-man. It's a darker spot, you don't even realize you're at the beach but it's definitely a cool place to stop in for an hour or two to have some drinks and play some games! read more
