Their records are labeled and organized to give you new ideas - the Caribbean section, for example, is stocked with Haitian Kompa, Jamaican Mento, and Trinidadian Calypso, genres you maybe didn't consider upon arrival but now feel necessary to browse. You can search by labels, artists, and decades, or, you can simply flip through their New Arrivals section which is updated daily. If you are feeling spontaneous, just look at their "To File" sections with albums yet to be organized. The best part is when you finish browsing for rarities you can enjoy finding popular favorites - sometimes you just want that album everybody has and you just love to sing along. Decent, low-key used record store just off Manhattan Ave in Greenpoint. Daily "hot picks" are sorted in bins as you enter the store. Records are mostly very used, which is reflected in their mostly low prices. Have found several gems here though. Not the most organized record store so plan to go on the hunt. Also I wish they had more than one listening station. You're out of luck when the store gets even a little busy. read more

Very hit and miss. One day I came away with a good collection of jazz LPs, some very collectible for not more than $30 apiece, and others less rare but still hard to find for $10 to $15. And the woman working the counter was cool. If you buy over $100 on first trip, you get a coupon for $10 off your next visit. Stopped by while doing a Brooklyn record shop tour with family friends. We stumbled upon it by accident but it was absolutely a great find. The staff was super friendly, down to earth, helpful (and offered us some freebie pins, pens, etc). The store may be small, but it has everything. The prices were really great, too, especially if you are used to New Jersey's Urban Outfitters as your main source of record shopping. If you want to hunt around and not be limited to current pop artists at 60 dollars a record, make sure to stop by. read more

At this record store run by the Captured Tracks label, it's fitting that their stock is full with artists on their label. If you're a fan of any of those artists, you're in luck. New records released by Captured Tracks as well as more well-known "indie basics" such as Grimes and Bon Iver can be found here going for ~$2-4 less than Amazon or other local record stores. The staff seemed great and were very helpful. In addition, Captured Tracks seems like a great spot to hit up for cassettes. I was able to find a Perfect Pussy tape (released by Captured Tracks), which worked as a great present. While their used selection didn't seem particularly memorable beyond your average used rock, the new vinyl and cassettes are definitely worth making a trip for. read more

This place has become one of my favorites. They it may be a bit difficult to find since they're in a residential area and in a basement. There are signs by the main street (Manhattan Ave) pointing to them. Where do I begin? They have tons of records all neatly organized. Lots and lots of dollar records, new records, used records and 45's. Great prices too, and to top it off, most of them are in good condition. The staff is friendly too, and I never have a problem with the music been played too loud which can sometimes get on my nerves. The only complaint is that every time I go in here, my wallet gets a bit lighter when I leave. :) read more

After this afternoon I'm officially adding the Captured Tracks shop to my Greenpoint record shopping circuit. There's not the space for the volume of inventory available at Rough Trade or Academy, but the selection is much more curated and the staff are always as amiable as you'd hope. As other reviewers have noted, this is the best (and probably least expensive) location in town to pick up anything released on the Captured Tracks or Sacred Bones labels. The selection from other labels is excellent, as well, and frequently priced lower than at Academy or Rough Trade. What impressed me most today was the selection of vinyl the shop had for sale. I'm a sucker for the sales bin; I can't help but browse, and I usually can't help but be disappointed and reminded that this shit is on sale for a reason. Not the case at CT... plenty of new and desirable titles that were simply overstocked or maybe overpriced to begin with. Boom. A no-bullshit sales bin gets the fifth star every time. read more

In terms of unique gems alone and rare reissues, look no further! I walked in and was greeted immediately by a friendly shopkeeper who was insightful and open to conversation on any item I had a question about. The owner was also there and was equally friendly. He was happy to help me navigate the reissues and was quick with some suggestions. I found some incredible 7" albums and CT re-issues. Make it a point to stop by!! read more

i brought them over 100 jazz lps and they offered me $80 or $100 trade. i took the trade and came home and found out all the records were crap, i threw away two of them. I would say this was the worst experience ever. read more

A decent shop with a solid and eclectic selection. Stating that a shop is "hit or miss" is a bit redundant. Any one who collects knows most record shops are hit and miss. This is a great spot to dig into the crates and build up your collection with some gems you may have missed. They have a decent rotating selection , usually fairly priced. Not to mention the captured tracks label (including great acts such as mac demarco, wild nothing, thieves like us and home shake) is pretty dope and they sell there own records here at super reasonable cost. Their shipping takes slightly less times now, SOMETIMES. Still a two week wait on average to get an order, why? Their packaging has gotten much better lately (from horrible to semi-decent) so I will bump up their rating. Still a long way to go. Five star band roster, though. read more

Look around, find it! The location is VERY HIDDEN! I was standing in front of it not realizing it was down the steps in front of me with their Architectural Firm-looking signage. No matter; THIS IS A GREAT RECORD SHOP!!! No joke; well chosen and curated shop with tons of new stuff. I left with a stack of albums yesterday and it didn't kill me financially either. The new stuff is priced fine, but much of the used stuff is priced well within the range where you can go ahead and get them as opposed to doing triage before checking out. Once I hit the right day and left with a stack of obscure metal, most of which was $4 and in nice shape. Yesterday I got a bit of everything (A family band from Algeria, an '80s band I'd never heard of, some deep funk, and a new release from a cool label) and all the used stuff was 4 or under. Hit up the listening station and go big! Captured Tracks is a great way to spend an afternoon off. read more

Very pleasantly surprised by this store -- thought they would just be pushing their own label's product or have trouble getting collections in, neither is the case. Original '60s and '70s titles are abundantly stocked and priced to move. One point of differentiation is that they carry tons of solid original pressing '90s indie staples in the Sonic Youth/Pavement/Superchunk vein, if that's your thing. Captured Tracks is everything a record store should be. Great selection of new & used vinyl, quality tunes playing on the store turntable, cool and helpful staff, fair prices (especially on the used stuff), the stock is remarkably well organized and easy to navigate... oh, and it's spacious. 20 people could be browsing in there and it wouldn't feel claustrophobic. In a neighborhood that already has an embarrassingly large amount of great record stores, Captured Tracks can hang with the best of 'em. Go here and buy stuff. read more

probably the best curated selection in any of the brooklyn shops i been through. spot's in the basement, so it's a little in the tuck but it's nice and cool down there during the summer heat. pulled anything from library jawns to japanese bgm and cantopop records out of this spot. always in great condition and always priced to move, these cats get it. top 5. read more

Let me say up front that I want to love this shop, as it's in my neighborhood, right around the corner, so both convenient and they routinely get a decent selection coming through. Two problems: (1) a lot of the albums that are marked up are not in the greatest condition. Essentially they're charging NM prices for VG or worse records. And (2) the buyers at this store can be incredibly cheap. I've sold albums here exactly three times, roughly about 50 LPs each time. The first time the buyer gave me $91; the second time $65; the last time $14. This was over the course of two years and the best were not sold up front. The most egregious example was very recently, where I returned two days after selling that last stack (for $14) and saw one of my Grateful Dead LPs selling for $15. Of course you'll say: 'You should've taken these elsewhere,' and that's true; I could and should have. But when you carry these things around by foot, as most NYers don't have a car, the last thing you want to do is leave with them. The buyers know that, or at least this last one I dealt with did, and took advantage of it. Sure, it's common practice in record shops, with their buyers, but this was the worst example I've ever seen. Personally I'll never go back, which is a shame, as I've bought and sold hundreds of dollars worth of records here; but that was the last straw. read more
