TL;DR: This dealership's garage botched a (poor quality) motor install that they did under warranty. It basically cost me over $3000 a year later. They then tried to make me feel guilty about not bringing it to them when I had issues. The first image is from the garage that I had fix this dealership's issues. The second image is from the initial motor swap that was performed at Car Culture. The whole process of purchasing a used vehicle from Car Culture/Dominic was relatively quick and easy. After driving the vehicle for a week or so the low oil notification came on. I topped it off and it came on maybe a week or so later. The vehicle was using over a quart and a half in less than 1000 miles. This dealership is almost a four hour round trip for me so the back and forth was a hassle. The garage initially tried to gaslight me into thinking that this oil consumption was acceptable for a Subaru. They finally decided to replace the motor under their 3 month/3000 mile warranty and told me that the warranty would restart at that date for the motor replacement. This initial motor issue also wrecked the catalytic converter and O2 sensor, which I would have to replace later on my own dime when the motor was replaced again... Less than a year later the vehicle started overheating. Knowing that I was past the dealership warranty, I took it to a local Subaru garage that I've used for years and that I trust. I accepted the fact that I bought this vehicle used and it was no longer covered by the dealership. The garage informed me that I had a leaking head gasket. They also stated that the motor looked like it had much higher mileage on it than the vehicle had. This was before I told them the motor had been replaced recently. After a few days I called for an update. They informed me that the motor was generally in poor shape. It more than likely had this head gasket leak for a long time before symptoms showed, and it had a lot of wear on it. On top of that, the install was completely botched. Bolts were reinstalled in the wrong places (and therefore stripped) or just completely missing altogether. It was at this point that I decided to contact the dealership and inform them of this issue. They basically implied that if I would have brought it to them for the overheating issue, they would have possibly made it right. I almost felt like I was being made to feel guilty, like it was my fault that I would have to pay to have another motor installed. I had several issues with this: - They weren't going to cover any overheating issues. I was explicitly told that the replacement motor would only be covered for 3 month/3000 miles from the time of the swap. Why on earth would I make a four hour round trip when I originally told that any issues would not be covered at this point? Not to mention I would have to make this trip in an overheating vehicle or pay to have it towed. - The fact that the motor that was swapped in was of poor quality was a red flag. I was told that this was a quality replacement motor sourced from a reliable supplier. They made a point to tell me that they spent more on their motor than my garage spent on the one they used. I trust the Subaru garage that myself and my friends have been using for years. My garage noticed the poor quality of the motor before I had even informed them that it had been replaced. They physically showed me many things on the motor that pointed to the motor being a high mileage, low quality unit. - The biggest issue is the botched motor install. Why would I even want Car Culture to attempt to remedy this? Could I trust them to admit that the first install was screwed up or would they just bandaid everything together and send me on my way? Bottom line, I regret doing business with Car Culture and I advise against it. read more
