I am a guy who is very into the portland coffee scene and I have been to just about every local coffee shop you could think of. I stumbled across caravan earlier this year around September of 2015, and have been obsessed ever since. Caravan has become my number one favorite roaster I have ever had. I would rank them higher than coava, stumptown, water ave, etc. any day. The quality of their coffee is incredible. They have a great selection between light and dark roasts and some of the most incredible cups of coffee I have ever had has been from the caravan tasting room. I am a huge cold brew enthusiast and their Peru cold brew on nitro is my all time favorite. I would recommend for a pour over either the Peru Feminino, the Sumatra, or the Guatemalan roast. You really can't go wrong with what you order. Finally, the customer service here is really something else. Me and my buddy's always come here every Friday and have got to know the staff pretty well. They offer a free tasting session every Friday at 9:30am and me and my friends have been a few times. It was a great experience and we got to talk to the owner about caravan and how it all started after the tasting. This company is deeply integrated with their community and care a ton about their customer relationships and it really shows. I have recommended this place to countless people, and will continue to recommend them to anyone who is trying to find a great cup of coffee. If you are debating making the trip from pdx to Newberg to try them out definitely do it, they're worth the drive. read more

The most elegant coffee experience ever! Used to the big chains? You have to try this. It is a full fledged roastery. The very knowledgeable barista gave us samples of cold brew while she patiently prepared out "pour over" - a more time consuming and delicate brew method. They have a lovely patio and free Wi-Fi. The owner chatted with us awhile. A very friendly place. And they take Apple Pay, love that as a cyclist I don't have to bring extra stuff - a wallet. read more

It has been a year since I have worked at Caravan so I figured I could review it now! Please take it all with a grain of salt though. For one, I absolutely loved working here. The people at Caravan are so kind and genuine. They treat their employees well and their customers too. You won't find a better quality cup of coffee from Newberg to Salem. Pour overs and espresso options are both available. Just ask the tasting room host what they recommend and you will be happy. My favorites are the Brazil and Guatemala, but every now and then there is a really fun Ethiopian option that tastes so different! The tasting room is state of the art and has the best equipment available. Every shot is dialed in by expert baristas. Everything is intentionally done here. Come in on Friday mornings at 9:30 for free coffee tastings with the roaster Paul. Not a lot of room to sit inside during the winter, but the patio in the summer is great with a nitro cold brew. Caravan is a hidden gem in Newberg since it is off the main roadway. But once you go once I promise you will be back. read more

My go-to roaster. I am a coffee afficionaado and am very particular. I am a fan of their blends and some of their single source beans (although my favorite single source has not been available for some time, but that's a supply issue). Buy a bag at the store and get a free pour-over to try one of the other varietals. I drop in at least twice a month. read more

I'm enjoying my first sips of Caravan's Peru Femenino organic coffee. I used my french press - as suggested. Three things drew my attention and support to this company: the simply amazing smell of their fresh roasted coffee beans, the fact that my coffee was roasted two days ago, and their monthly membership. At 40.00 per month plus around 8.00 shipping it's quite a bit of an expected cost for 4 12oz bags of coffee. That being said the smell of their fresh roasted coffee was addicting. For someone who wants to get in the good graces of a coffee lover the membership would make an excellent gift. read more

Are you kidding! Who does that?! I pull into the parking lot at the buzzer. Employees are leaving the store but Kat says, "Are you here to pick up?" "No," I said, sadly, "I was hoping to buy some coffee." Kat put her gear down, unlocked the door and let me in. (I mean, really? WHO does that?!) Thankfully, for both of us, I knew exactly what I wanted; my Caravan favorite 'Black Thunder' (okay - and a Saharan Silk, right?). Not that it would have mattered whether they had either on the shelf. I've tried Caravan's Standard Roasts and specialty coffees. I have not been disappointed in any of the coffees I've purchased. If they had been out, I would have just grabbed the closest bags and honored Kats time & commitment to customer service. I would have liked to have paused for a pour over - but Kat was SO kind and the abnormal winter weather SO sunny and beautiful! Thanks Kat! Thanks Caravan! (Okay - that's the people and my experience today, but I haven't told you anything about the coffee!) Black Thunder is dark, bold and rich. It has a rich caramel flavor and deep-bodied presence, but with dark undertones of a mystery waiting to happen - you know the kind; where the music starts to build and you know SOMETHING is gonna happen? Except in this case, the climax isn't a gruesome and gory end to your taste buds. No bitter "HA-WANG" or the heebee-geebee shutters. It's a dark rich and mysterious brew one should get to know slowly! Also, for whatever reason, it grinds nicely and brews exceptionally well in my Gaggia Classic espresso machine. I can't say that for every brand "X" surprise bag I've brewed. Weird, huh? Saharan Silk also grinds and brews equally as well. Open the bag and breathe deeply; it's like rolling over in silk sheets, slapping the b'jesus out of your alarm and sleeping in on a Saturday - that good! It's been awhile since I've had it, but I remember feeling like Marco Polo on top of the world. I'm gonna have to get back to you later on the exotic flavor. ...or better yet, catch Kat before she closes (5pm!) and let her introduce you with a delightful pour over! Friday mornings at 9:30 this fine bean importer and processor opens its doors to the public for a tasting of the latest and greatest beans to grace the establishment. Some Fridays you will invited to the mini-barista bar cafe at the rear of the warehouse where they do all their R&D of preperation menthods, and do professional barrista training. Caravan is the first place in the greater Portland area that we have found that has truely small plot, artisan level, farmer grown beans from all over the world, the best of the best. We have subscribed to their custom coffee service that delivers fresh roasted beans from some of the most exotic growers...Sorry to say it, but Caravan has turned me from just an enthusiat to a coffee snob. At the tastings, I have learned how to make a test-cup in exactly the same manner that the professionals in the field..how to evaluate the aroma and flavors..to sense the berry or nutty or earthy components...Wow, I never would have predicted that my 'nose' would ever be able to sense and enjoy so much about the range of character from the simple coffee bean. The folks are friendly, and eager to help you enjoy the coffee experience to the fullest. Please note, Caraven is not 'coffee shop'...you can't just drop in and order a latte or espresso when you please..You CAN drop in anytime during business hours to buy beans, but to learn more and excite your nose and pallete, DO consider a Friday moring drive to Caravan...if you do it once, you may well be adjusting your calander to allow you the opportunity again soon...I sure have, in spite of the 45 minute drive, I make this at a once a month necesity. Recent beans have been from Ethopia, and the highest regions of Columbia, all small plot, small yeild, artisan grower beans, incredible stuff!!....If you understand the new TV show, Dangerous Grounds, you will fit RIGHT in at Caravan... Went to Caravan due to the recommendation of a person I trust. I was not disappointed. Had literally the best shot of espresso I have ever had in my entire life. Took the tour and our guide, Marcus, was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The production of their roasted coffee was highly organized and it was evident with each person I met how much care goes into every bag of coffee they produce.
