When we moved to Oregon I knew the area was famous for their coffee and finding this gem while we were out running errands is proof of how epic the coffee game is in the Portland area! They are coffee roasters so everything you can get at the little walk-up coffee window is brewed from their own roasts, and OMG SO GOOD! I refilled my "white girl energy" with a pumpkin spice latte that was rich and creamy and had actual pumpkin flavor on top of their smooth coffee. My partner got a mocha and absolutely loved it! We were both so impressed by our first sips that we asked about the bags of whole bean coffee they sell and the woman behind the counter came out to talk to us about each of the roasts and even gave us free tastings of the ones they had brewed. I'm not a coffee expert at all, but I do know when black coffee tastes good enough on its own that I'm not reaching for cream and sugar like I usually am. We grabbed a bag of Peru San Ignacio and Papua New Guinea, and I'm so excited to brew it at home and I will DEFINITELY be back on our next trip into the city for errands. They're a family run business and they've been here for 10 years so I know we'll be able to frequent them for years to come and I hope you do too! read more

The walk up coffee window at Thornton Family Coffee Roasters is fast and friendly. The team at the counter works so efficiently to get your drink out within a couple of minutes. I was hesitant to look for this place since it seemed to be on the side of an industrial building but it was so easy to find! Look out for their branded vans and their signs on Millikan Way. Nice place with a walk up window where you can order your coffee. I was staying at the Hilton right around the corner and I looked up the best coffee on Yelp and it was right down the road. This place is a hidden gem (and integral to the coffee history of Portland!). We ordered a black pour over and chatted with the guy running shop (Mousse). Thank you Mousse for welcoming us to Portland/Beaverton! We learned that the owner of Thornton's has been in the coffee business for over 40 years. We also learned that the Thornton's have a familial line of Q Graders! It's crazy to think of the start-to-end process in making my cup of coffee. Imagine: Thornton's global network with farmers, transporting single origin beans while maintaining bean integrity, then roasting the beans in-house, and finally creating a brew that passes the trained taste buds of a Q grader. I recommend buying a bag of beans since they roast frequently. The bag I bought was roasted 2 days ago! Since coming to Portland, I haven't found a bag with a roast date of less than a week (also I could be looking in the wrong places... til now). The sheer variety of beans is also insane! And to ALSO be single origin?! The coffee here is more than a drink... It's a culture, it's a standard, it's a philosophy of how coffee should be enjoyed and why coffee quality should continue evolving. I will be making the 20 minute drive every few weeks to restock on coffee beans. Do yourself a favor and savor the taste of their finest cup of brew. read more

I had no idea this place was here until my workmates suggested we walk over here after lunching at the BG food carts. It's kinda tucked away in a hidden corner near The Round. I'm so glad we did! I had an Americano that was fantastic! I was hoping to fine a great coffee shop in Beaverton for times when I don't want to trek downtown for a good coffee and now I've found it. They definitely deserve five stars. And they also sell plenty of varieties of beans which my workmates highly favored. Prior to my baby, I would drink coffee more for the sweet taste rather than trying to be awake and fully functioning for work. It would actually just put me to sleep, iced or hot. I went to the walk up, and told them I wanted a coffee that was sweet. She proceeded to ask me if there's anything I add, I said creamer. She told me I would like a thick coffee and recommended Columbia Los Rosas. It was delicious. The service was great. The girl was knowledgeable and very pleasant. Definitely coming back. The coffee was superb! It was nice to encounter a shop that allows for a 16 ounce triple shot. I expect to pay for an extra shot, but when a shop outright says "we only do 2 or 4, it's ridiculous. We ducked in here for a mocha to find a small person at the window helping her barista mom out on a Sunday morning. Too cute. She's an expert punch card stamper. This truly is a family operation. We ordered two medium half sweet mochas. They were 12 ounce with 2 shots for $4.75. They tasted good. It is a little expensive for 12 oz but it is nice to support a local business. Things to know: 1 It's tricky to get into their parking lot. If you come north on Hall from Canyon you turn into the pool/spa place's parking lot. The coffee window is on the right and has some designated spots. 2) We saw a few scones and croissants but it is clear they are about the beans not about food. We got breakfast burritos at Mexicali Express instead. 3) Check their hours before you go. They are not Starbucks. 4) Get a punch card. 5) There is an umbrella but no table or seating. What a wonderful place. Walk-up service area, great selection of coffees, nice selection of brews at a reasonable price. Stopped in the other day to buy four bags of coffee for a canoe trip I was prepping for. The young lady that helped me out (see photo below) was exceptionally friendly and did a great job helping me to select varieties that would be a good fit for our paddlers. Then she custom-ground them for my french press. Because of the large size of my order she was kind enough to comp me with a free beverage - I tried a glass of the cold brew which was truly wonderful. See the prices for prepared drinks in the photo below. I had to check out the roasting area and they were working away (see photo below). The coffee bags are labeled with the roast date so you know exactly how fresh they are. Worth a stop! read more

Obviously a walk up window isn't my choice year round in Portland, but they are fast and delicious. Their brands are delicious with many different brew methods as long as you have it ground to the right setting. Their cold brew is the best I've had in the area, so they'll be a go to in spring and summer. read more

In a coffee market over saturated with sub par coffee and service, Thornton Family Coffee Roasters has arrived on the scene to serve up fantastic coffee to the greater Portland area. The shop is owned by family who has been in the coffee business for decades and they care deeply about their product. It is obvious from just a couple of conversation with them that coffee is their passion. Which is exciting because I consider myself a coffee snob!! Pros - Fresh roasted coffee - Friendly and knowledgeable staff - Great location (right in the heart of Beaverton) - Great values- It's really neat how they are trying to break down the walls between barista, roaster, and customer. They also care about where their coffee comes from and their relationship with growers. Cons - Parking- had to drive by the first couple times to figure it out. The street in front of the location is okay to park on. Also there is overflow parking lot on Hall Rd side but some spots are reserved for other businesses. - No seating/ Walk up only for now- the business is focused on commercial roasting and does not have seating available right now. One of the owners told me they desire to find a work around to get seating without have to renovate more of their roasting area. read more

This is the cutest little hidden coffee shop. One of my friends showed me this place a few years ago and I make it a point to point it out to others if they are looking for a cute new coffee place to check out :) The staff is always so nice and easygoing.
