Came here after church one Sunday afternoon. We opt to sit outside as it was nice day. Patio seating could use renovation and furniture is chipping away. The food came out promptly, I ordered the salmon. I wasn't a huge fan- not sure if it was a bit more fishy than I'm use to or maybe too much sazón seasoning... however the red beans were decent. Dechele was our server--at least that's the name she gave us. She was a young woman with long dark hair. When taking our order, she said that the main entrée came with any sides. Based on that, I ordered the bistec with tostones. Later, I saw a $6 upcharge for the tostones on the bill--something she never mentioned. I also asked for a cup of water, and she asked, "Bottled or tap?" I said "tap," and still ended up being charged $2 for it. In the middle of dinner, she came by and casually asked, "Do you want an avocado?" We said yes, assuming it was complimentary or included. But when the bill arrived, there was an additional $6 charge for the avocado. When I questioned it, she shrugged and said, "You should know everything is extra." To make things worse, while we were eating, a woman walked in and asked for the manager--she was there to deliver a violation warning letter. That alone was a huge red flag. If we had seen or heard that at the beginning, we definitely would not have stayed to eat. Honestly, based on our experience, I believe the positive reviews are fake. Carbón & Leña is a great find in Hyattsville. My friend and I love Dominican cuisine and this hit the spot. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but the o side is nice. It is tiny though, with just a few tables and some counter seating. By 1:00 pm on a Saturday, it was full. Service is friendly. I got the stewed chicken platter with rice and beans and a side of tostones. My friend got the stewed ribs with rice and beans and a side of platanos amarillos. We shared the pastelitos de queso and I ordered jugo de maracuyá. We loved everything and had leftovers. The chicken was delicious but the ribs are the way to go. They were so tender and flavorful. Tostones and pastelitos were perfect. And I always love rice and beans. I'd return here anytime and highly recommend checking it out. read more

This spot is truly a hidden gem and I love exploring these types of places. I drive up and down route one and never noticed it. Then again, it's quite easy to miss if you're not looking. It's directly across from Shagga (an Ethiopian restaurant). If you're driving on route one towards the DC direction, it comes up on your left! They've been open about 7 months now and the folks here are very friendly and easy to talk to. I came here yesterday with a fellow foodie Yelper and we both enjoyed our meals and our experience. I like that the portions are generous - I had leftovers for lunch today. I never had Dominican food before but I love it. It's very similar to food I grew up on back home in Guyana. The flavor is very authentic. Like seriously, is there someone's grandma cooking this food?! It has a nice, cozy ambience. Not a place to come with a group of 20! There is a small parking lot adjacent to the restaurant so you don't have to worry about parking. They offer local sodas as well as coke products. I tried the merengue and enjoyed it. Reminded me of a Jamaican kola champagne. They have some beers as well. We ordered the chicken empanadas and they were delicious. For my meal, I got the pollo guisado with rice and sweet plantains. As the review, I happen to see this place across from Shagga and decided to try it. It was a pleasant surprise. I tried the readymade pork stew with white rice, green salad, and a side of tostones. While waiting for the tostones, I decided to try a beef empanada. Mmm, mmm!! Great flavor and still crunchy even after been under the heat lamp for an unknown amount of time. Back to my main course. The pork was very tender and very flavorful (although a tiny bit salty for my taste). The rice was perfect, not hard and not mushy like it sometimes is at Chipotle. The tostones were fried to perfection. Only thing missing was the mayo-ketchup. :( In summary, it is worth the try. I gave it 4 stars just because it was a little expensive compared to other similar restaurants. read more

I was pulling into the parking lot of another restaurant when I looked across the street and noticed this restaurant, a new addition to the community. Looking over at my daughter I asked if we should try it and with Glee she said yes. When we walked in we were greeted with smiling faces and happy staff explaining all the dishes that were available. My daughter ordered the Chibon and rice and I ordered the rice and beans with chicken. The dish size was more than enough and out weighed the cost greatly. The food was fresh and hot and the option of fresh natural juice made the meal even better. After putting down fork after fork down my daughter looked at me stuffed and asked for to go boxes . The only good thing about this place is the friendliness of the workers. Misnomer, carbon y lena means charcoal and the wood used to give flavor to food being cooked outdoors. None of their dishes are prepared this way. Expensive and presented with two sides in the menu. In reality the main dish is served with only one side, counting arroz cooked with beans, or stamed carrots and other vegetable, as TWO SIDES. This was explained at the time of paying the bill, since one of the comensals had steamed vegetables and french fries (charge $3,00 for fries) No water can be had. They informed us that the only water available would be the plastic bottles at extra cost. They would not serve tap water. Food mediocre. There are many other restaurants in the area with excellent food and at reasonable prices. read more

I am giving Zero stars. Should have known it was no good when barely anyone was there. My husband and bonus daughter are Dominicans and wanted some of the food that I don't make from home like modongo. Ordered off of menu- got bill and was overcharged for several items. Kids meal posted as 5 in menu- got bill charged 10. Fried chicken is supposed to be 12.50- got bill charged 15. Modongo was a vegetable stew more like soup with more veggies and a few pieces of goat meat- 15 bucks. Rip off. When approached they acted like they didn't understand English. Said my son who is 4 looked big so they didn't think the kids meal would be enough so they charged ten and didn't even ask my husband or myself whether it was okay. The bill was 96 dollars. They won't get another dollar from us. A total disappointment and me being an African American.can make better Dominican food. Terrible establishment and they lost what would have been loyal customers. Crooks! Do not support this business! There were also several open items on the receipt that did not match the menu.
