A fellow volunteer at an event I was working on mentioned that her husband did estate planning and it might be worthwhile to check out even though I am in the east valley and the office was in Glendale. I can assure you it was such an easy and carefree experience that I cannot believe I was actually seeing a lawyer. I always pictured it being so complicated and expensive and having things said to me I wouldn't understand without use of a legal jargon dictionary. However, Heath sat down with me and discussed the different types of documents that were available and what they were used for as well as answered any questions I had in regard to them. He also asked questions about my affairs in order to create the documents needed. Ends up I just needed a simple estate planning package with a few different documents. I left that day giving Heath the information he needed to draft the documents. Since I didn't live nearby, he emailed me drafts of the documents when they were complete for me to review. I was able to ask any questions I had before hand and when I showed up to pick up the documents, all I had to do was sign and pay the small fee that was charged. It's just been really nice having a place that explains things in normal language instead of legal-eagle riddles. There are some DIY parts (mostly funding the trust), but they walk you through it. You just have to have the follow through. They also give you lifetime free updates and free yearly reviews. My aunt actually switched from her old attorney because he charged her for every tiny update--like, even small changes came with a new bill. With Family Tree, she can just call and get things adjusted. When my mom passed in 2024, their team helped me sort through everything that needed to move through her trust. We did have to pay for probate on one account, but that was on us--she never retitled it into the trust. If she had, probate wouldn't have been necessary at all. It was a good reminder that you can't just stick the estate planning folder they give you in a drawer and forget it exists. They also updated the trust for just my dads situation once it was all settled. The only cost was the probate, the help, the new trust for my dad, the advice etc was all part of the service they offer. More recently, my aunt had a messy inherited IRA issue that Wells Fargo completely botched. When she asked for senior management, the WF manager told her they dont monitor regulations for IRA accounts and that's what CPAs are for (which is really upsetting, I'm pretty sure if you manage it you should be responsible for knowing the rules...) It was an IRA that had been inherited twice, and Wells Fargo told her she didn't have to take distributions... which was very wrong and could've gotten her in trouble with her taxes. Jason stepped in, reviewed the account, checked the laws, and even pulled in their CPA to confirm everything. He got it sorted out quickly, and my aunt finally understood what was actually required. Overall, Jason and the staff have been helpful and patient. Having a team that actually supports you and explains things clearly makes a huge difference. I definitely recommend them.
