I stopped by Caribbean Bakery & Mini Mart for dinner and went straight for their oxtail with rice & peas and veggies. The plate was huge, and you could smell the seasoning before it even hit the table. The oxtail was flavorful, tender, and coated in a rich sauce that really pulled the dish together. The rice was fluffy, the peas earthy, and everything had that authentic homemade Caribbean taste. If I had one wish, it would be for the oxtail pieces to be a little meatier -- because the flavor had me wanting more. Portion-wise though, they don't skimp, and everything tasted fresh. Service was straightforward, the spot has that local charm, and it's definitely worth checking out if you're craving real Caribbean flavor in the area. One day my coworker had a craving for Caribbean food and me, being a lover of some good jerk chicken and oxtail went with him to this location. Not being that familiar with Stamford I would have probably not found it on my own, but since he had been there before he knew right where to go. The parking at the end of the street - atrocity. We parked down the street. The storefront is very unassuming but when you walk in the smell of the food is warm and inviting. The two ladies working there were super friendly and there was a line of 3 people ahead of us, and within minutes a longer line behind us. I knew this place had to be good. And in the store they had ting (a grapefruit drink I love) that I haven't seen in other Caribbean stores. They have a limited amount of grocery and baked bread. I opted for the jerk chicken with Mac and cheese and a side of white rice. The amount of food in a small plate was plentiful. I couldn't wait to dig in! The jerk chicken was good, hint of sweetness but missing the hint of spice. The Mac and cheese was so delectable. I wish I had ordered more. The white rice was awesome. It was so much food I ate it for lunch and dinner. The prices are very reasonable for the amount of food you get. I will absolutely be back as I want to try their oxtail! read more

The location of this place is a bit weird and sketch. It's on a dead end with many people just hanging out on the streets in front of the stores around this place. The inside of this place is small, has groceries, and about 4 tables . I went during a lunch rush and there was a line that moved pretty fast. It was loud inside, but the place was calm, I ate in peace. I tried the oxtail and jerk chicken- both were delicious - though I didn't enjoy the slight sweetness of the dishes. I would def go back again but never alone and only during the day. I was catcalled, asked for money, and was stopped multiple times during my one visit. This is an unassuming place off the beaten path in Stamford. This area seems like a little bit of a seedier part of town, since there are a few buildings that have barred windows and a security fence. The food here is definitely worth walking over to this side of the town. Food comes out at 12:00pm on the dot. There's the usuals, curries, jerk chicken and patties and then there's the specials. They're different everyday, so there's definitely the variety here if you are looking for it. $8 for a small order or $10 for a large order for the usuals. If you're really hungry, the small will fill you up, so I wouldn't recommend ordering a large unless you want enough leftovers for dinner. read more

A true gem that's stashed in a little nook right near downtown Stamford. My father used to bring home beef patties and coco bread from this same place years ago, along with Jamaican hard dough bread and the occasional Ackee and Saltfish breakfast platter. Fast forward many years, and many pounds gained later, my girlfriend and I were both fiending Jerk Chicken when I immediately remembered this place! We strolled in around 11ish on a Saturday morning and were lucky enough to find Jerk Chicken and Jerk Pork available despite it still being breakfast hours. I ordered a mixed platter of Jerk chicken and pork, while my girlfriend went for straight Jerk chicken. We both ordered it over rice and beans and a hefty dose of Jerk sauce... We were not disappointed! To start, the Jerk sauce is perfect. Not overly spicy, and bursting with flavor, this sauce is the stuff we craved! It definitely helped that the pork and chicken itself were both very tender and juicy; the rice and beans serving as the perfect balance to the heat and flavor. I also ordered a beef patty with coco bread as a side dish; biting into it made me reminisce on devouring these wonderful pockets of deliciousness years ago. We were both left very full and very happy... Mission accomplished! P.S. - I can't stress enough how much of a value this meal was also. Came here after researching yelp to see where I could satisfy my craving for oxtail w/ rice&peas. Now I'm kicking myself that I didn't find this place sooner! The oxtail is luscious, the rice&peas and cabbage are deliciously seasoned and made with care. The "small" is a generous portion, and the large could probably feed a hungry family of four. Their beef patties are also very good; the pastry is incredibly flaky and the filling is subtly spicy and warming to your insides. Very hearty fare. I was delirious with hunger when I picked up my order, so I didn't really peruse the rest of the store, but it is WILD to me that food this good comes out of a mini mart and that crowds aren't swarming the place. Every now and then I crave jerk chicken. Sometimes I luck out and island spice grill is by my office in the city, but it's once in a while I enjoy this carribean delicacy. I was craving it today and did some research. Found this place on Yelp and figured I'd give it a try. Unfortunately it was late in the afternoon. No oxtail :(. But I did get the jerk chicken, jerk pork, and jerk wings. All of them was flavorful and cooked really well. They seasoned the chicken and pork so good, it reminded me of my time spent in east Flatbush. It was not too spicy, not too salty, and not seasoned too much. Their sauce was delicious as well. My wife, who is thai, found it interesting. Told her give it a few more tries and she will like it. My only thing was that whoever served me, kept staring at me. Made me feel uncomfortable. As an ackee and salt fish fanatic (I make a mean version myself), I have to tip my hat to the kind folks that serve this dish up at this joint. Perfect balance of salted cod to ackee and just the right amount of heat and grease. Perfect way to start every weekend. I've literally parked outside and have waited for them to open. I'll be honest, I haven't tried too much else on their menu (patties are great and the jerk wings are okay but a bit too sweet for my palate), but the ackee and salt fish alone merits 5 stars.
