Visited for the first time today, and learned that they're recently under new ownership. Enjoyed a nice chat with the owner, Paul, and his family. They kindly offered samples of their new menu items: pulled pork, corned beef, chili, and pastrami. Seems like they're expanding from a typical chicken spot to include homemade barbecue and NYC deli classics. Ended up enjoying the pastrami and rye with coleslaw and a side of chili. All well-seasoned, with the pastrami as a standout. Recommend it for homesick New Yorkers craving a taste of Katz's. We'll definitely return next time we're in New Canaan. read more

Great food and really nice people! We enjoy the chicken wraps for lunch - warm pieces of bite sized, seasoned chicken in a generous wrap. Many hot foods to choose from too such as mac & cheese, amazing chili, brisket, pulled pork, rice & beans, fried chicken, etc. I've always had a positive experience here and I feel that the owner takes great pride in the quality of his food. If I could, I would give the restaurant 4 1/2 stars, because so much was good about their basic menu. For the service, and vibe, it was an average New York deli. But the one thing I would really press on is one of two things, their coleslaw, and their fried chicken. Both of these are served in abundance, lasting for multiple days at a fraction of their normal price, overall an incredible deal with perfect crispy chicken. Went in for breakfast this morning. Learned that the new owners took over in October, so be sure to not look at the old reviews. Got samples of the BBQ and Pastrami. Both were fantastic. We live in North Carolina and know good BBQ and this was right up there! Bacon, egg and cheese on a hard roll was a great breakfast with tons of melted cheese. While staying with a friend in New Canaan, a large group of us ordered dinner from New Canaan Chicken. This turned out to be convenient in terms of proximity and how quickly dinner was available (because fried chicken takes a little longer). It did take them about 10 minutes longer for our dinner to be ready than they said on the phone, though we did order a lot of fried chicken, and we ordered it just before closing... be aware, they do close relatively early. The chicken turned out to be a good deal in terms of quantity for price. Interestingly, one of the drumsticks still had feathers on near the joint. That didn't bother me, because I grew up next to my grandmother's farm, and occasionally she'd miss a feather or two when dressing the bird. You have to wonder if this was actually an issue with whoever supplied this place with the chicken. Overall, the fried chicken was quite crisp, with a distinct spiciness to it (but not overly spicy), but at the same time, the chicken was perhaps cooked slightly too long, because the meat on the breasts and thighs was a bit dry. Of the sides, my favorite was the cole slaw, well prepared and just right in creaminess. The mac and cheese, for me, was nondescript. The cucumber salad was not exactly what I expected. Normally when I think of a cucumber salad, I think of cucumbers, maybe some onions and dill, in a sour cream sauce. This was chopped pieces of cucumber and tomato in a vinegar and oil dressing. It was not bad, just not what I expected. But for all these comments, New Canaan Chicken still stands out as a place I'd order from again because (a) it's not a chain, (b) it's not pizza (which everything else in the area seemed to be), and (c) it's still decent food prepared quickly at a reasonable price. read more

Stumbled upon this hidden gem today for lunch. 1st time here. The Cheesesteak caught my eye so I gave it a try. It was delicious and a good portion size, no skimping on the meat! I watched the guy preparing it and was impressed with how he did it. Took his time and carefully added spices and cheese. As simple as it sounds it was overall one of the best around. Couldn't leave without trying the chicken, especially as it's in the name. Extremely satisfied with the chicken too. Ordered a Thigh, you get a choice if you want the special seasoning (yes I recommend it!) frankly it's very hard to find a great place for fried chicken, I believe I found it here! As always with take out food best to eat it right after it is prepared. Definitely coming back soon! read more

New Canaan Chicken is the premiere chicken joint of south west Connecticut. It has a diverse menu of options, some chicken related, others not. I have sampled a good number of their offerings and none did disappoint. They offer good portions at a reasonable price, especially in a high cost of operation area like New Canaan. I imagine the only way to reasonably reduce the prices would be to lower the proprietor's taxes. All in all, I recommend it. read more

Chicken chunks felt like there was filler or something in them and the cones weren't as crispy as I'd like. Ordered a chicken cutlet wrap and while the wrap, dressing, lettuce and tomato were delicious...the cardboard-like chicken cutlet (ie flat and hard) had undoubtedly been cooked and sitting on a shelf for a long time. It was hard and chewy, and for the first time in my life I didn't finish a sandwich it was so bad. Perhaps it was a one-time occurrence, but I doubt it since the shelves inside the glass case were stacked with pre-cooked chicken cutlets and other chicken items that were on the menu. I live local so will give them another shot, but...if you go and see the similar stack o' chicken cutlets you might think twice about ordering that item. read more

Love the food, love the guys there and the atmosphere. Any of the wraps are fantastic, along with the cones or fries or literally anything else on the menu. Atmosphere is a relaxed and easy. Quick service and nice people. This is quite literally the same restaurant as Chicken Joe's, same guys working the grill and all, so any complaints regarding a change from Chicken Joes seem unfounded. 10/10 overall. Formerly Chicken Joe's. Not sure if it's new owners, or new "management". I liked chicken Joe's. This new place, not so much. It seems they are trying to get away with offering ghetto quality, but charging New Canaan prices. Not a great fit for the town off NC. Not that Chicken Joe's was way up there on the high end side to begin with, but this new place seems to have taken it a few steps lower. Cones - not crispy anymore. Mooosh! That only happens when you use low quality oil, or are too lazy/cheap to switch to new oil during the day. It's pretty hard to screw up cones, but they did. I will only get cones at Garden Catering for now on. F this place. Chicken nuggets - grissily, weird fatty chunks in them. I gave 1 and a half, out of 4, to the birds over on Starbucks patio. They might not have even liked them. Low quality chicken. Do they source these from the same place McDonald's gets their nuggets? Sauces - they will give you about an 1/8" worth at the bottom of the little cup. So little, it's actually pretty hilarious to think that someone feels that's enough. One of the cups was filled so low, that whatever was in there, stuck to the sides, and you could not even dip a nugget. When I told the owner/manager, or whoever the new guy is, that he should fire whoever fills them, his response was "well, that's the way we do them" Ha, well at least he admits to cutting corners, being cheap. If he's doing that with just the sauces, imagine what's going on with the rest of the food/quality. BTW, this is my third time here. Should have learned my lesson on round #2, but I just chalked it up to bad luck/bad day in the kitchen. Nope, confirmed that something has gone FUBAR. If you are used to Garden Catering quality, you will hate this place. If you like being served ghetto quality food at New Canaan prices, you will love it! I would go negative star on this abomination of an eatery if I could. This dung-hole is absolutely disgraceful. Not being from the area, I was excited to try a well regarding fried chicken restaurant nestled in the cradle of America's crustiest upper-crust. What a massive disappointment. First off - the food is crap. Plain and simple. I'm from the South, so maybe I hold a higher standard to a cuisine perfected in the gulf - but honestly - it's fried chicken. Chicken, flour, house spice, secret ingredient (cayenne usually? maple syrup perhaps?), egg, oil. Done. Hard to mess up. After dining with NCC, I'm pretty sure New Canaan's secret ingredient is a straight up cow-patty. That's poop for readers that aren't familiar with the term. Massive miss. Now that we've reviewed the food and filed it in the drawer labeled dog-food, let's talk about the employees, or as they like to refer themselves as, the manager/owner. This guy. I mean. What a tushy-hole. What I witnessed with by far the most opposite form of southern hospitality this side of 1964. The story goes as follows (abridged): I'm waiting to order a to-go order. A nice, young, good looking Asian man walks in to pick up an order. The 'manager?' initiates some confrontation. Explaining to the Asian man that he's 45 minutes late to pick up his order (which is still bagged as if propped for a lambasting the moment the orderer walks in to pick up). The customer explains that he specifically told the owner that he'd pick the food up at 6:45. Time of evening: 6:45, impeccable timing considering traffic in the area. The owner continues to argue minute details as to whether or not the customer put the order in correctly, exclaiming "Who did you talk to?" By which the customer says, "whoever answers the phone..." (1 employee in the establishment - owner/manager/tush-hole). The owner then unnecessarily tosses the bags against the wall and exclaims, "well your food is cold, now I have to make you new food." At this point the Asian male is perplexed. He explains, "I told you I'd be here at 6:45, why would you make the food early?" Here's the kicker. This tush-hole's chemically imbalanced brain finally came to a standard balance (what you and I would call "normal") and he clicked back to reality. The tush-hole says, "OH, I thought you were the UBER driver! I'm sorry sir! Your food will be right up." Asian male says, "why would you think I was the UBER driver?" To which TH explains, "well, you had your phone out, all the UBER drivers walk in with their phones out" WTF. 1. Are all Asian males to be considered UBER driviers? 2. Is this how you generically treat UBER driviers? 3. What purpose does it serve, as a business owner in the service industry, to be a major Richard? Do you think you're better than another working individual because you make mediocre chicken in an empty store? You disgraced my evening in New Canaan. I was told the town was different, not stuffy, not elitist. Want to know what saved the night (if you're still reading) - Joe's Pizza. That place kicks ass. Leave the chicken to the guys down south, and pick up a pie instead. read more
