On two completely different incidents Carl and Son was sent out by a home warranty company to repair issues at my daughter and son in laws new home that were not disclosed by the former owner or found by the home inspector that they hired before close on the property. On both occasions Carl and Son got the work done promptly and correctly. The two gentlemen who did the work were professional and courteous. The first incident was a natural gas leak that had to be handled as an emergency. The home warranty company first dispatched a different plumbing service from Chicago. I could write volumes on this initial plumbers incompetence however I will get to the point. When the first plumber left Nipsco still detected a severe natural gas leak. This leak point was clearly marked before this plumber started. I refused to have this same service back and it took a lot of arguing and a threat of law suite but finally the home warranty company agreed to dispatch a different plumber. This was Carl and Son and the experience was like night and day. This leak was repaired and after the entire system was pressure tested another valve showed slight leakage. This was also repaired. Nipsco commented the repair was excellent and was able to immediately turn the gas back on. I would recommend Carl and Son to anybody in the "Region". People tend to dwell on the negatives but rarely take the time to pass along the positives. Carl and Son did the job correctly on both jobs. I would hire them again in a second. I wouldn't call them to tighten up a zip tie let alone install a water heater. I had to redo all of the pex piping work, ( my utility closet looked like a Windows 95 screensaver) anchors holding the exhaust pipes to the ceiling all fell out within the first week, no new gas line was installed, but I was charged for it and a hole was drilled through a wire directly above a light switch and they called out an electrician and charged me for it instead of asking if I had the tools and knowledge to fix it. the title of professional is given out too loosely these days read more

This is NOT a company you want to use!! Charged $500 for a hot water heater install sub contracted by Menards. They dented the tank and cover on the new HWH and charged $300 extra to move items that never needed to move. They left a mess and we are not sure what was taken besides copper tubing that they cut out a replaced with a hose. They unplugged the sump pump and left it unplugged in a different place. They also helped themselves to a Rubbermaid riser while they were not being watched. The BBB will be notified as well along with Menards. Terrible excuse for a professional business. read more

Left my house with my tools that I had to ask them to return.Asked for an itemized bill on the work they did, never received it. I trusted them because I had used them in the past. They apparently didnt have a utility pump at all...so they just left our old, leaking water heater in the basement. No clean up, nothing. Water everywhere. Just called with an emergency basement flooding. We have no heat, no hot water, and our main water line has to be shut off. I called them because our home warranty ordered it. The guy on the phone was EXTREMELY rude and short with me and refused to take the job because he had "commercial basements that were flooded and he JUST got done with a job" I explained we have NO heat, NO water and CHILDREN in the home and he wanted nothing to do with us. American Home Shield sent the contractor to handle my issue and it was the worst experience ever. I have a property in Indiana and Carl and Son were sent to handle the issue. While on the phone explaining the issue Carl had already had a solution without visiting the home, Carl said it was a root issue and I had to pay out of pocket $250.00 for the rodding job. Two days later the same issues persisted, the sewer backed up in the basement, he sent two guys out and the two guys set up and went to sit in the van. I had called the city out to check the sewer prior to them arriving again, the city told me that I had PVC pipes so roots were unlikely and Carl was ripping me off. So they wanted to be present when they came back. Long story short Carl did not rod the on the first visit, because after only 10 feet of rodding the problem was solved with the presence of the city sanitation workers overseeing the job. However, Carl insisted that he rodded 100 feet and the area is only 73 feet to rod out. If your home warranty company tries to send this company out request another contractor ASAP! read more

I would give no stars if yelp allowed it. My warranty company works with this company. Before anything, I was called by a man who wanted clarification on the problem, which makes perfect sense, only it was 8:30 pm (this was not an emergency situation). He was slurring his words to the point I wondered if he had been drinking. Fast forward to the next day at 9pm when I receive another phone call from the same man asking the same questions in the same slurred speech. I reiterate everything from the night before. He then proceeds to have me basically perform what should have been his service call. I ran around my house, testing this and testing that, relaying the results to him over the phone. By the time everything was done, it was around 10:15pm. He then decides to tell me that nothing that needs to be done is covered under my warranty, but if I don't get him in trouble and tell the warranty company, for $500 he can come out and do what I need to have done (which from any other plumber costs around $250-$300). I also need to have something else done, it can wait for awhile, but it will need to be done soon. He can come out and do it, but will run me around $1000. I can't tell the warranty company though, because it will get him in trouble. He's shady and there's something not right about this company at all. I never even gave them a chance to come to my home after just talking on the phone with him. Steer clear. read more

I have been a homeowner for many years and carried a home warranty: Ive had some plumbers sent that have completely horrified me: One literally cut a frozen pipe from my sump so when ice and snow melted, the water was dumping back into foundation and seeping into my basement: had to pay out of pocket to have that "repair" fixed. Ive had Carl and Son come twice over the last 2 year to fix issues: they were proficient; capable and did quality work. The other day my battery back up sump did not come on during a power failure: I called my home warranty company and they first assigned the company that nearly flooded me but I requested an alternate and thank goodness, got Carl and Son again: Rather than just test the battery and move on, he opened and looked at battery which was failing; he was quick, professional, explained and showed me everything wrong, fixed my problem and returned my piece of mind. do not call Carl and Sons when you need a plumber. we called them out to fix a clogged bathtub. They quoted us a price of $300 after they investigated the problem. They went to work. About a half hour later when they were done they said it would cost $525. how did the price go up $225? They told us it would be $300. What a RIPOFF. save your money and call a different plumber. Terrible customer service. Was brought to this company from my home insurance do to a sump pump going out. Talked to the owner the night before who was slurring their speech and not making sense at times. I'm assuming they were drunk. Fast forward to the next day. He was supposed to have one of his plumbers come out at 8am. When the plumber arrived he called me and I had told him my wife called off work and would be there while he does the job. About 49 minutes goes by and I get a text from my wife saying she's been waiting with the door open, looking outside to check, and hasn't seen anyone come or go. I call the plumber and he strikes an attitude with me saying no one was at my house when he knocked so he left for another job, then hangs up the phone on me after I tried to explain to him someone was there the whole time and that he might have been taken to the wrong address. So I call the owner, whom once again sounds wasted. He says he doesn't know what happened, then abruptly says he has another call and will call me back. Never got a call back and now my wife lost out on a days pay for taking off to stay home for this issue. read more

I reached out to them after my insurance refer me to them, they came in right away no problem, took photos everything that was wrong with my water heater and they were going to send it my insurance. They told me they were not going to charge me and the communication was fine until almost a month later when they started ghosting me and so did my insurance. Call my insurance gave me the run around and call carl & son left them voicemails never got back to me, the last time I reach out to them the older guy answer me and told him who I was and was trying to see if he had heard from the insurance and then hung up on me that was Nov 10, 2019 8:22am next day got a call from my insurance telling me they are not going to cover the job. I was pretty upset because since insurance was not going to give them the job it make sense why carl & son been avoiding me, right? ( I was actually going to hired them for another but since I experienced this with them why bother since they were avoiding anyways). Fast forward to today Feb. 27th, 2020 at 7:32pm after almost 4 months since I last heard from them the older guy got the nerve to call me to charge me $100 for the visit he did back them when i was going thru this situation and when can he get the money....honestly that got me so mad but because i was trying to put my son to sleep i hold back and decided to be civil about it. But damn how dare you... and the nerve you got to call me back almost 4 months later when you told me you were not going to charge me when we spoke first visit, then avoided me since you did get them job thru the insurance (lost my business since I was trying to hired you for other stuff) and then out of nowhere call me trying to get money out of me after almost 4 months? Recently, I bought a house, but the plumbing was all out of whack. After a few calls and visits by plumbers, these guys seemed to know how best to fix all the problems (not taking anything away from the others). Also, the older guy made suggestions on alternative ways (yes, still legal and up to code, I was assured) to fix some problems for lesser cost. Basically small redesigns of specific problem sections that would be cheaper than fixing the original work. There were two guys that came, although I'm not sure if that's their norm or not. But it helped having two plumbers at the house together as a team during the estimating and work. They did great work and fast! I'd recommend them any day unless, of course, another plumber could do the work for a LOT cheaper. read more

550/hr shower valve install, I supplied the Materials, bought last night at Lowes, ( Delta shower/faucet set, remodel plate, tub drain trim piece and over flow cover plate). Paid 298 in total at Lowes. I'm a bit of a DIYer, and was unable to remove the Gerber cartridge, when replacing a valve handle to replace a leaky faucet. rather than cutting into the shower wall and creating a bigger project on my day off. I called Carl and Son, midweek appt. They showed promptly at 09:00, and we're done by 09:53. Less than 1 hr. No clean up, I was left getting all the dust and debris left in the shower and surrounding area. They opted not to install the overflow cover plate or the drain trim, grant it, anyone can chanel those out, because he said their boss didn't say anything about it but for 550.00, I was expecting a professional job to its completion. I will never recommend this company to anyone, and lesson learned I will always get estimates. Out of convenience and desperation it cost me. read more

Nipsco came out to turn on gas service to rental house. They found two gas leaks- one behind gas range, one at hot water heater. I was advised to call a licensed plumber to fix the leaks. (plumbers are the only people who are supposed to repair gas leaks). I called Carl and Sons. They charged $325 and were finished very quickly. I asked why they didn't check their work and was advised, "Ma'am, we're PLUMBERS! We know what we're doing". The next time I visited the house to show it to prospective renters the smell of gas was evident. I called Nipsco back and leaks were found at the same two places!! Carl and Sons were called, took their time arriving and this time at my request sprayed with gas leak detecting soap which they got all over the white wall, dripdown into a puddle. AVOID THESE PEOPLE and hire competent people. read more

We had great service today! They came out this morning and had to do hard work. They even had to break concrete and and cut out major pipe line. They were here for 4 hours and I have to tell you it was as if they were never here. They even cleaned up after them selves. Thank God for the guys.
